sauce? Is it the aroma of pumpkin pie? Is it the

Thanksgiving began as a day of giving thanks for

the blessing of the harvest and it is celebrated the

fourth Thursday in November. In this edition of the

newsletter, you will find many portrayals of

Thanksgiving from our neighbors. Let’s take the

time to give thanks and be grateful to our God for

the many blessings that he gives us. Let us also be

reminded to show compassion and kindness to each

other. May we even go one step further – tell others

how much we love and appreciate them!

ACB Update

By Debbie Nicholson, Chairman WIA ACB

Committee.

There has been an increased interest in violations in

the community lately, so we are sharing the latest

on compliance.

The ACB does its best to stay on top of violations

whether we discover them ourselves or some

interested resident brings it to our attention, which

most of the time has already been

addressed. Letters have been sent to those

residents that fail to keep their yards mowed,

disabled cars parked in driveways, toys, or other

yard objects that are in street view, lake view or

course view. Letters have been sent to those that

need maintenance or structural repair of their

homes. Many of these same residents have

received more than one violation

letter. Because you do not see improvement or

activity to correct the matter does not mean it is

being ignored by the ACB.

There is another issue that has come to the

ACB attention which is exterior choice of paint

color on houses. The ACB is looking into possibly

offering a range of approved colors, but to some it

probably won’t go far enough in reigning in

personal choices. There is a fine line between what

one homeowner likes or dislikes vs another. Colors

that blend in with the natural surroundings is a

wide range from browns, greys, creams, greens,

reds, blues, pale yellows. Natural colors do not

conform to just browns or tans. Nature is vivid and

alive with color. But the ACB will look into

choices that should give everyone a wide range and

still be aesthetically pleasing.

We appreciate your interest in keeping Waterwood a

unique and inviting place to live. With that said, please

keep in mind everyone has their own tastes of color and

construction, individualism is what gives Waterwood its

own personal charm.

Ladies Golf News

By Sandy Singletary

The Waterwood Women’s Golf Association traveled to

Elkins Lake on October 26 to play an Interclub

match with Elkins and Panorama Village. We had a

wonderful day of golf and there was a Waterwood

golfer in each of the top 3 teams. Dixie Thornton was on

the first place team, Shirley Allen played on the

second place team and Sandy Singletary played on the

3rd place team. Elkins is always a great host and

we all had a great time.

On November 9, the Waterwood Women’s Golf

Association hosted our Interclub match at Raven Nest.

Eleven Waterwood ladies participated. The temperatures

were a bit chilly when we teed off, but by the

end of play, the sun was out and the temperatures were

perfect. Sandy Singletary and Pat Willborn were

on the first place team, Joyce Hubbard and Pam Combs

were on the second place team and Shirley Allen

was on the 3rd place team. Congratulations to all of our

winners.

Our lady golfers try to play nine holes every Thursday

morning when weather permits. If you play golf

please come out and enjoy the course with us. If you

would like to join us, or if you have questions call

Sandy Singletary at 936-891- 5071. We hope to see you

on the course!

VFD REBUILDING

By Bob Lane WIA VFD LIAISON

Personnel and equipment continue to improve for the

department. Applications for new members continue to

be submitted but of course more are needed. If you are

interested in helping out but not up to fighting fires you

can join as a REHAB member. Rehab provides support

for the fire fighters and the department. For example, at

a fire rehab members provide water and such for the fire

fighters, help with cooling fire fighters and help with

equipment. There is training required but not hard.

WIA has purchased $8,000 of new fire hose for the Fire

Department: 1500 ft of 2-1/2 inch hose and 800 ft of 1-

1/2 inch hose. Most of the old hose failed testing earlier

this year plus 1-1/2 inch hose thought to be good failed

at the Fall Festival. This hose failed under minimal

pressure as children were allowed to spray some water.

Good thing this did not occur at a fire. The new hose has

been delivered and is now on the fire truck.

WIA has made final appointments to the Waterwood

Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors. This is a

new group that provides oversight and support for the

WVFD and also serves as the interface between the

WVFD and the WIA Board of Directors. The appointed

members are: Roger Honea, Bob Lane, Joe Meyers,

Sandy Singletary, and Lynn Spencer.

More to come as rebuilding of our WVFD continues.

Waterwood Volunteer Fire

Department News

By Chief Corey Jackson, WFD Chief

Winter is upon us and we would like to remind everyone

to check their vents if they are going to use their

fireplace. Also as a reminder to keep dry leaves and

branches away from your home. Chief Corey Jackson

and Assistant Chief Sam Gordon would be more than

happy to come out and inspect and make sure there are

no fire hazards. If you have questions, feel free to email

us!

In October we had our First Annual Fall Festival which

was an amazing turn out! We raised 100.00 and it has

been added to our account for future purchases should

anything come up that we need. We received new fire

hose for the trucks and we are excited to get them put

on. We have had our first Training night with 980 North

Fire Department and had a great turn out! Remember

we are accepting applications. Come and join us and

serve your community! There is no greater reward. Stop

by the Fire Department or contact us and we will give

you one. We are looking for Fire Fighters and Rehab

Personnel. Also, Jr members are welcomed with a

parent's signature. You must be between the ages of 14

and 18.

In December we will be having an All You Can Eat

Pancake Breakfast with the firefighters and Santa will be

there. The breakfast is for everyone in Waterwood.

Children young and old come out and eat pancakes with

us! The breakfast will be on December 16th from 9am to

noon. It will be a 5.00 donation for all you can eat! We

will also have Photos with Santa. You can bring your

own camera or Captain Howze will be there once again

taking photos. We welcome everyone in the community.

It’s a great opportunity to meet your fire fighters, rehab

personnel, Chief Jackson, Assistant Chief Gordon and

Captain Howze.

We are currently doing a coat drive for adults and kids

who may need a coat. If you have gently used coats

please contact the Fire Department via email and we will

-Page 6

meet you up there to receive the coats. We are also

doing a Toy Drive for the kiddos in Waterwood and San

Jacinto County.

We ask that you keep in mind toys for all ages and for

both boys and girls. If you know anyone who would

benefit from A Secret Santa please let us know no later

than December 16th! We will be handing out toys at the

pancake breakfast. The toys left over will be donated to

San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office for their toy drive.

We look forward to serving the community and being

your Fire Department.

Hay Ride

By Melanie Cook

Once again, our annual Halloween hayride

sponsored by Palmer Real Estate was a huge

success! We had approximately 50 trick-or-treaters

and riders who were taken out in two hay wagons,

driven by Greg Cagle and Tim Yeager.

Thanks so much to the Charlton's who were hosting

a get together, but made sure our kids were taken

care of by having the hayride stop by their home.

Big shout out to the following who were ready to

hand out the goodies:

Anita Paul, Bonnie and Doug Triplett, Jeff Coker,

Raymond and Melinda Ramirez, Gene Weekley,

Cassie Schildknecht and Michael Lopez, Tom and

Maryann Readal, Tana and Robert Davis, Al and

Janas Goldsmith, Bruce Perea and Janice Messina,

and Bob and Karen Lane. Roger Honea and Wyatt

Cook for loaning us the trailers. County

Commissioner Mark Nettuno for loaning us the

hay.Wyatt Cook for getting the hay and Greg Cagle

for taking it back.

Thanks to all of you who made it happen and we

will see you again next year!

COCISD Bond Election

By Melanie Cook

After months of committee meetings, tours of the

facilities, town hall meetings, and lots of visiting in

our communities, the Coldspring-Oakhurst

Independent School District Bond has passed.

Thank you to all of you who not only took the time

to come to our town hall meeting last month, but

who took the time and effort to get out and vote.

Because of you and your support, our kids and

faculty of the COCISD will reap benefits of the

bond. Many benefits of the bond include classrooms

being added, safety issues will be addressed, much

needed repairs will be made to all facilities, Career

and Technology classes will be offered, along with

so much more. For more information about the

recently passed bond, see COCISD's web

page. Thanks again Waterwood for stepping up

when needed!

Christmas Decorating

We need all hands on deck for volunteers to help

make our community look festive for the holidays!

In the past, our maintenance contractors have put up

the large lighted trees along the parkway for us.

However, this year we are asking for volunteers to

come and help out. We will be meeting at the WIA

office on Saturday, November 25th at 9:00 am to put

up the trees and the Menorah and Nativity as well as

the wreaths on subdivision signs. If you are

available to help out, please come join us! We need

everyone’s help to make Waterwood glow!

And while we’re talking decorations, WIA is again

sponsoring the Christmas Home Decorating

Contest. There will be four categories for best

decorations: 1) Grand Prize, 2) Large dwelling

(2000+ sq. ft.), 3) Small dwelling (under 2000 sq.

ft.) and 4) Condo/apartment. So be sure to get in the

holiday spirit and get your home decorated. The

judging will take place on the night of December

16th, so make sure your lights are on then.
