Mains and off-mains drainageThe majority of houses in the UK are linked to the publicsewerage system; you pull the plug, flush the toilet, paythe monthly bill and have little more to worry about. Thisis mains drainage.

In rural areas many homes and villages are self-contained,ie, the wastewater flows to a cesspool, septic tank ortreatment plant. This has no connection to the publicsewerage system and is known as off-mains.

If you’re off-mains what are your options? If you seek a solution to your off-mains wastewater disposal, one of the three following options will be required: Septic tank Package wastewater treatment plant Cesspool

Septic tankSolids and liquids separate in a septic tank with the liquidsreceiving minimum biological treatment. The liquid in thecentre of the tank is discharged via an outlet before passingthrough a soakaway system which must be installed to nationalstandards.

The solids that gather at the bottom of the tank must beemptied regularly to prevent overflow and potential soakawaydamage.

Package wastewater treatment plantSo-called because these products bring together all therequirements to treat wastewater to a high standard within asingle pre-fabricated system. Generally consisting of a two orthree chamber treatment process, effluent is treatedaerobically, ie, using oxygen, to such a standard that it isusually acceptable to discharge directly into watercourse.

Package treatment plants require an electrical connection andshould be emptied regularly dependent on usage and capacity.

CesspoolThis is a single watertight underground chamber which simplystores raw sewage for collection. Usually constructed in GRP,concrete or brick these can be very large and must be emptiedregularly to avoid overflowing.

Unless there is absolutely no other solution - where the groundconditions prevent the installation of a soakaway system orthere is no natural watercourse to discharge to for example -cesspools are not a favoured choice, either of the propertyowner or the environmental agencies.

Choosing the right sewagetreatment and disposal method foryour site is essential to ensurevalue for money, effective long-term performance, protection ofpublic health and the environment, and compliance with relevantlegislation*

Which one is for you?Now that you have identified the requirement for awastewater treatment system, how do you know which one iscorrect for your property?

As the final effluent will be discharged into the ground via asoakaway, raised mound, reed bed or watercourse, a fullassessment should be undertaken by a qualified engineer.

This will normally include geographic research in terms ofwater table height, a site visit and a percolation test.Combined, these factors will determine the type of systemthat best meets your criteria.

Contact local Building Control (BC) officeand environmental regulator for selectionof discharge type1

Public Sewerdischarge Soakaway discharge

6

Consent to dischargeWhere effluent will be discharged to a watercourse anddepending on the volume, consent must be granted by yourlocal environment agency before you begin your installation. Ifyou do not obtain such a “licence” you may be liable toprosecution.

Your agency will be happy to advise you on the level ofeffluent treatment required in the area and this informationwill help you determine which type of wastewater treatmentplant should be installed. You will then be required tocomplete and submit a Consent to Discharge application formincluding a fee to the appropriate agency.

Consent to discharge criteria is normally expressed inpermitted milligrams per litre for the following factors: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) Suspended Solids (SS) Ammonia (NH3)

Will you need planning permission? You should contact your local authority to determine whether ornot planning permission is required before you begin the project.

Quite often, in new build situations particularly, this approvalwill form part of the overall permission but be sure to have thisclarified in every case.

InstallationIt is recommended that wastewater treatment plants shouldn’tbe sited any nearer than 25m from an inhabitated buildingalthough some local authorities may allow installationconsiderably closer. For single house installations 15m isgenerally considered as a reasonable distance thoughagreement should always be sought from your local authoritybefore installation.

The plant should not be installed close to a driveway or road orindeed anywhere else where there is a risk of it beingsubjected to additional superimposed loadings.

Access should be maintained for the desludging tanker, thesecan normally achieve a reach of approximately 20m.

The installation must be carried out by suitably qualifiedpersonnel and special care is required when installing inadverse conditions such rocky substrata or where the watertable runs high, for example.

Any proposals for non-mainssewerage systems must takeaccount of the requirements ofBuilding Regulations and shouldbe discussed with the localplanning authority at an earlystage and well before anyplanning application is made*

Sewage treatment is an ongoingprocess and the micro-organismsmust stay healthy for the systemto work. You should desludge thesystem regularly to prevent thebuild up of sludge and solids sothat sewage flows freely throughthe unit*

Commissioning, maintenance andafter sales supportWe would always recommend that your wastewatertreatment plant is commissioned, ie, installation check andinitial activation, by a Balmoral approved engineer. We wouldalso recommend that you undertake an annual maintenanceprogramme to ensure your plant continues to operate at itsfull potential. We will be very happy to help you initiate this,if requested, when your plant is commissioned.

In any case, you should inspect your wastewater plantmonthly to ensure the effluent is flowing freely. Desludgingintervals are dependent upon the tank’s capacity andfurther information on this is provided in the product-specific sections.

Our after sales support team is always available either bycalling 01283 562382 or by sending an email [email protected]. We will be happy to answeryour questions if you don’t find the information you requireat the FAQ section of our website.

A septic tank is designed to provide what is known asprimary treatment to crude wastewater produced in anormal domestic environment. It retains solids andallows them to settle out, where they can be partiallybroken down by biological action so that only theremaining liquor is left to flow down the outlet drain. This liquor (normally called effluent) is thensufficiently treated to soak into the ground in anunderground soakaway system.

How does it work?Balmoral septic tanks are designed in accordance withBritish Standard Code of Practice BS6297 and arebased on a two chamber design (4 and 5) with a longflow path which ensures a high degree of settlement(6), thus providing a low level of suspended solidssuitable for discharge (7) into an undergroundsoakaway system.

Design features The tanks have a flat base for stability duringtransportation and storage prior to installation

The tanks have Ø50mm moulded-in lifting eyes foruse during handling and installation (To be usedonly when the tank is empty)

The inlet and outlet pipework is specially designedto disperse any noxious or inflammable gases intothe atmosphere through the drainage ventilation

The standard septic tank is designed to cater fordrain invert depths of 770mm. The neck can bereduced to suit shallower invert depth

The inlet pipe can be rotated by 180° to line upwith the drainage lines from almost any direction

The system of baffles ensure that no crude solidsescape into the outlet drain, avoiding prematureblocking of the soakaway system

A fully lockable pedestrian duty manhole cover issupplied as standard to comply with statutoryregulations

A safety grille can also be supplied as an optionalitem to fit across the access shaft as an additionalsafety feature

Balmoral septic tanks are tested and approved bythe British Board of Agrément (Cert. no. 94/3021)

Key benefits

Page 18: Water Waste Water Treatment
Page 19: Water Waste Water Treatment

The Balmoral CAP is a biological aeration typetreatment plant designed to produce a moderatequality of final effluent in addition to overcomingseveral of the common problems associated withsmall packaged domestic wastewater treatment units.

Common problems which can occur are: “Fixed film” types, which have a “media” matrix,

can suffer from media blockage because ofexcessive bacteria growth. Replacement/maintenance of the media material may berequired at regular intervals

Mechanical/electrical components within the tanksare difficult to maintain and can be a safety risk

The liquor is not spread evenly over the availablebacteria preventing an adequate oxygen supply

The Balmoral CAP overcomes these problemsbecause: There is no “fixed” media within the CAP to

become blocked - it operates on the “activatedsludge” principal whereby the bacteria floats insuspension in the reactor vessel and forms an“active soup” of “mixed liquor”

All functions within the tank are operated by airpower generated by a small compressor contained inthe neck of the tank, allowing maintenance to becarried out safely and easily

The bacteria receives a high quality air supply andis completely mixed and aerated by the highvolume fine bubble diffuser

How does it work?Crude wastewater enters the main outer chamber (1)where the initial settlement takes place, with theheaviest solids sinking and the floating matter rising. The liquor from the main section is transferred to thecentral chamber (2) where it is continuously aeratedby the fine bubble diffuser (4) which encouragesbacteria to provide the second stage of treatment.

The mid section of this treated effluent is thenremoved from the chamber through a calming pipe (5)which allows a further brief settlement beforedischarge (6).

The air compressor (7) runs continuously. It iscontained within the neck of the tank and isaccessible for maintenance if required.

Easy access is available to both chambers fordesludging which is an annual operation.

Page 24: Water Waste Water Treatment
Page 25: Water Waste Water Treatment

An aerated biological system, the HydroClear benefitsfrom a moving bed biological reactor, or MBBR, at itscore. A new process in the package wastewater market,MBBR technology embraces the benefits of common fixedfilm media processes without suffering their commondownfalls.

Overgrowth of bacteria leading to ‘channelling’ is an issuewith common process designs such as submerged aeratedfilters (SAF), rotating biological contactors (RBC) ortrickling filter (TF) designs.

How does it work? The Balmoral HydroClear system incorporates a full sizethree chamber design, ie, primary settlement, aerationchamber and final settlement.

Within the primary settlement chamber, large solids areremoved by settlement and flotation. An accumulationforms at the base of the tank and is removed annually orbiennially by desludging.

The clarified water then passes to the biological reactorwhere it is treated to remove the dissolved constituents.Mobile media elements support large bacterialpopulations within the reaction chamber while induced airpromotes complete mixing ensuring that full treatment isachieved.

Unlike conventional media beds, MBBR systems are selfcleaning and unable to become blocked throughchannelling. Media interactions produce a sloughing effectthat removes excess bacteria thus ensuring continuous re-growth, optimising overall reactor efficiency.

The treated effluent and sloughed off bacteria flows intothe final settlement chamber where any remaining smallsolids are removed prior to the clarified effluent beingdischarged from the plant.

Design features Class-leading performance The HydroClear produces an

astonishing market leading pollutant removal level of97%. Carrying full CE accreditation to BS EN12566-3,final values are achieved for BOD, SS and NH4-N of10:13:6mg/l respectively.

Lower operating costs With its unprecedented 24-month service period and enhanced capacities theHydroClear can dramatically reduce long term operatingcosts. This is achieved through the inherent reliabilityof the simple but effective design rather than usingcomplex systems that require frequent maintenanceand desludging to achieve optimum performance.

Easy installation Further benefits are realised from theoutset with optimised design characteristics meaningthe 6-pop model can be installed using a 2.5-tonnemini-digger rather than the 7 or 12-tonne machinesrequired for traditional plants. These design values arereflected across the entire HydroClear range resultingin simple, cost effective installation with minimaldamage to the surrounding area.

Power failure default Even if the power fails theHydroClear will continue performing as a septic tank toensure continued environmental protection.

Silence is golden High performance diaphragm blowersare used across the full range of HydroClears providingvirtually silent operation.

Odour minimisation Hermetically sealed and marketleading performance means the HydroClear effectivelycombats odour production.

6-50-pop options The HydroClear is available in 6, 12,30, 40 and 50-population models, in single or multitankdesigns, depending on size, offering a highly flexiblesolution to space-limited sites.

Desludging intervalsA number of products on the market state 12-monthdesludging intervals, similar to the HydroClear 6-pop.However, the primary settlement capacities of some of theseproducts could be smaller than the HC6 by as much as 66%.Unless accounted for by special process design this can resultin desludging being required three times more frequently thanthe HydroClear. Similar circumstances may also be found inranges above 6 pop.

Using the Balmoral sludge gauge, end-users can accuratelymeasure sludge build up. Where reduced loadings exist, theHydroClear can operate safely with longer desludging intervalsin comparison to similar sized products.

ServicingThe Balmoral HydroClear has been specifically designed tooperate round a 24-month service interval; one of the longestavailable in the market.

The simplicity of the system also gives the end-user an optionto service their plant using accredited engineers or perform aself service using Balmoral supplied kits. Either choice meanspaying less in service costs over the product’s lifetime.

Key benefits

Page 32: Water Waste Water Treatment
Page 33: Water Waste Water Treatment

The Balmoral Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) combinesthe efficiency of activated sludge aeration with batchtreatment to provide exceptional effluent quality evenunder extreme loadings.

In common with all Balmoral products, no compromiseis made with regard to quality or design and theadvanced technology and materials used in themanufacture of the SBR will ensure a lifetime ofreliable service with the very minimum of maintenance.

The Balmoral SBR has been designed and built byBalmoral Tanks in association with the University ofAbertay, Dundee, Waste Water Technology Centre, who acted as external consultants. The universitycarried out an in-depth test programme during whichthe SBR was tested and evaluated alongside a leadingcompetitors model.

The aim of the development programme was to designa unit which was not only very robust and reliable butwhich would provide outstanding effluent qualitywithout the need for expensive “add on” equipmentand would also overcome technical problems - (suchas peak surges through the bio-zone), which mostcurrent designs have failed to adequately address.

The final report from the WWTC confirms that theBalmoral SBR out-performs its rivals in almost everyrespect and that it has the capability to meet even themost onerous effluent requirement.

How does it work?Crude wastewater enters the Primary Settlement Tank(PST) (2) where gross solids settle out and thesupernatant liquor remaining near the surface can bedrawn off. Substantial “buffer” storage volume isprovided in the PST to cope with even the mostextreme peak flow loadings (3).

A set volume (or batch) of the liquor is transferred tothe Reactor Vessel (RV) by an “air-lift” pump (4)where it is mixed and aerated by a powerful airbubble diffuser (5) for a period of 4 hours. During thisaeration cycle efficient oxygen transfer cultures adense “soup” of bacteria (the active sludge) whichfeeds on the sewage liquor thereby removing most ofthe organic pollutants. After aeration, the bubblediffuser is switched off and there is a settling periodduring which the dense activated sludge sinks to thebottom of the RV leaving behind the clarifiedeffluent, (7) which is then discharged into the drainby a second “air-lift” pump (9).

All functions within the tanks are operated by airpower which is supplied by an electric air compressorand the system is controlled by an integratedprogrammable unit which monitors the process totake account of flow conditions.

Harvest around 50% of your water needsThe chart above shows the breakdown of water use in atypical household.

The Balmoral Home-Harvest and Garden-Harvest rainwatersystems make it easy for you to gather and reuse thisrainwater.

Save on your water costsBy recycling your rainwater, a Balmoral rainwater harvestingsystem can help save up to 50% of your metered water costs.Meters are provided free of charge from most watercompanies so the sooner you fit a Balmoral system the sooneryou start saving.

Balmoral rainwater harvesting systemsBalmoral rainwater harvesting systems reduce the demand formains water provision. Many springs and rivers are naturallyfed by groundwater and are important for wetlands and theirecosystems. More than 25% of groundwater sources are at riskbecause of abstraction pressures.

By gathering and recycling rainwater, Balmoral’s harvestingsystems reduce the volume of discharged rainwater andcontribute to reduced flood risks. The loading on combinedsewer overflows is also lowered resulting in improved riverwater quality.

Balmoral offers two kinds of rainwater harvesting tanks forhome and garden purposes:

Balmoral Home-Harvest Rainwater SystemTM - page 44Designed for easy installation and reliable operation, eachsystem provides the highest quality non-potable rainwater fortoilet flushing, washing machines, garden irrigation andvehicle washing purposes.

What size of tank do you need? The size of a rainwater holding tank must match the demandfor water with its availability as closely as possible. The tanksize chosen must be a balance between budget, storagecapacity and the need to enable an overflow at least twice ayear to flush out floating debris. The Environment Agencypublication ‘Harvesting rainwater for domestic uses: aninformation guide’ provides an authoritative and independentmeans of calculating the optimum size of tank for householdwater use and suggests that 5% of the annual rainwater supply,or of the annual rainwater demand, is used to determine theoptimum size of tank, using the lower figure of the two.

What is your annual rainwater supply?

Tank size (litres) = Catchment area m2 x Drainage coefficient x Filter efficiency x Annual rainfall mm x 5%

Example 130m2 x 0.8 x 0.9 x 1125mm x 5%

= 5,265 litres

Annual rainfallThis can vary dramatically over a relatively small area, so areading (in mm) within 10 miles of the property is preferable. The local Environment Agency or the Met Office can supplyrainfall data or you can use the regional guide figures we haveprovided in the table below. In the ‘annual rainwater supplyexample’ above we have used the average figure for the UK.

Region Average rainfall (mm)UK 1125S England 781N England 944Wales 1433Scotland 1520NI 1111EIRE E 875 (Source: Irish Met service)EIRE W 1125

5% is a constant percentage factor

Catchment areaIs the width and length of your roof in m2. Rememberyou do not have to collect water from the entire roof. This can help to reduce installation costs.

Drainage coefficientIt is difficult to collect every drop of rain that falls onyour roof. Light rainfall will only wet your roof and thenevaporate and heavy rainfall can overflow gutters. Adrainage coefficient is used to adjust the tank sizecalculation to allow for this.

Roof type Drainage coefficientPitched roof tiles 0.75-0.9Flat roof smooth tiles 0.5Flat roof with gravel layer 0.4

Filter efficiencyDuring initial rainfall some rainwater will skim over thefilter, clearing away any debris. During heavy flow somerainfall will also bypass the filter to overflow ensuringthat the filter is not overloaded. 90% of rainfall iscaught, therefore the Balmoral filter coefficient is 0.9.

Average usageOn average, each person in the UK usesaround 150 litres of water every day and45.8% of this total could be rainwater insteadof mains water.

What is your annual rainwater demand?

Tank size (litres) = Average usage x people in household x days/year x % harvestable x 5%

Example = 150 litres x 4 x 365 x 45.8% x 5%

= 5,015 litres

Page 43: Water Waste Water Treatment

41

Rainwater supply

What is the right tank for you?Balmoral produces four tanks for domestic use so all you needto do is select the tank that best suits your needs. To helpyou we have calculated the correct size of tank for you basedon your annual rainwater supply and your annual rainwaterdemand. Select the tank size from either table and if theyindicate different tank sizes then you should choose thesmaller of the two. These tables have been produced usingthe average annual rainfall for the region and assumes apitched roof with a conservative drainage coefficient of 0.8.If your roof area is beyond the capacity of our largest tank orif the number of people indicates a smaller tank than yourroof area will collect, then this is acceptable as it will meanthat the tank will overflow more often, flushing out anyfloating debris.

Tank size calculatorCalculate the size of tank required using the ‘Rainwatersupply’ and ‘Rainwater demand’ tables below then select thesmaller of the two tank sizes.

Domestic water storageTo reduce the risk of water contamination in domesticsituations, Balmoral water tanks must be installed inaccordance with UK water regulations with particularreference being paid to Water Regulations Advisory Scheme(WRAS) Water Regulations Guide.

For private water supplies, advice should be sought from therelevant authority on the correct type of installation shouldthe water supply be subject to local controls.

Installation of a Balmoral water storage tank for domesticpurposes must follow WRAS guidelines to reduce the risk ofwater contamination and provide a hygienic water supply. This may require additional fittings (see page 52) conformingto Schedule 2, section 7, paragraph 16 of the WRAS WaterRegulations Guide (previously referred to as Byelaw 30 andByelaw 60).

These additional fittings should only be fitted when tanks arefor indoor use. If in doubt, refer to WRAS Water RegulationsGuide or contact your local authority.

For private water supplies the user should obtain advice onthe correct type of installation from the relevant authority ifthe water supply is subject to local regulations or controls.

UK water regulationsWater regulations, “The Water Supply (Water Fittings)Regulations 1999” in England and Wales and “The WaterByelaws 2000, Scotland”, replaced the previous regional WaterByelaws which were seen to be outmoded, restrictive and outof step with the rest of the world in terms of watermanagement and health and safety.

Fundamentally, the Water Byelaws 2000, Scotland, mirror theregulations adopted for England and Wales as do those whichapply in Northern Ireland.

To assist in a greater understanding of the regulations, theWater Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) published its WaterRegulations Guide early in 2001.

Guidance summaryThe following guidance is a summary aimed at providing aninitial assessment of the contamination risk and the designmeasures required to remain regulation compliant.

At the outset the water suppliers’ consent must be obtainedbefore work starts on any proposed installation. Failure to doso could result in criminal prosecution.

The regulations classify water quality into five categories. They range from Fluid Category 1, classed as “wholesome”water (straight from the tap as supplied by the waterundertaker) to Fluid Category 5, fluid representing a serioushealth hazard (grey water recycling cisterns, abattoirsupplies, etc).

Under the old Byelaws classification, Fluid Category 1 wastermed “water for domestic purposes” or “potable water”.With five Fluid Categories the appropriate safeguards to beselected for a given application may seem a bit daunting, however the Information and Guidance Note document (IGNNo. 9-04-04) entitled “Cold Water Storage Cisterns – DesignRecommendations for Mains Supply Inlets” acts as a quickguide to simplify the choices.

Any cold water storage cistern or tank together with its fittingsrequires to be constructed of materials conforming to regulationrequirements. Balmoral tanks are compliant with the WRASRegulator’s Performance Specifications.

Certain basic design parameters are applicable:a The overflow pipe, inclusive of any insect screen, if fitted, shall be capable of draining the maximum inlet flow withoutcompromising the inlet air gap

b For cisterns of less than 1000 litres actual capacity theoverflow/warning pipe diameter shall not be less than 19mmand to ensure air gap compliance is recommended to be sizedat twice the diameter of the inlet pipe.

Cisterns greater than 1000 litres actual capacity require both anoverflow and a warning pipe/warning device. The minimumrecommended warning pipe diameter is 25mm with the overflowsized at twice that of the inlet diameter. (Or the equivalentdiameter sized at twice the summation of inlet pipe bore areasfor tanks with multiple inlets).

Most cisterns store wholesome water used in part, at least, fordomestic purposes irrespective of other downstream system uses.Given those circumstances the cistern must then comply withClause G16.13 of the Government Guidance as depicted in Figure 1.

Fluid Categories 1-4A simplified yet no less compliant approach to cistern designand application is to consider only the implications required tomeet either Fluid Category 4 or 5 requirements.

Any cistern encompassing cistern design features, advised inFigure 1, and incorporating a Type AF Air Gap on its inlet/s willencompass fully the backflow protection requirementsnecessary for Fluid Categories 1-4 with little or no penalty inlost storage capacity.

The general thinking behind this recommended approach isthat it’s better to be safe than sorry. It is considered there aregreater inherent risks associated with larger and morecomplex water supply systems when limited information maybe available.

This design approach, which covers approximately 90% of allcistern installations, provides for greater uniformity ofapplication throughout the water supply industry.

Figure 2 sets out the relative positions of a cistern’s inletdevice relative to its warning pipe, overflow and normal topwater level for a Type AF air gap requirement.

Figure 2

Figures 3-5 illustrate, for various cistern capacities, therecommended plumbing arrangements compliant with providing TypeAF Air Gap protection applicable for cisterns installed in domesticand commercial applications.

Figure 3: Cistern < 1000 litres

Figure 4: Cistern 1000-5000 litres

Figure 5: Cisterns > 5000 litres

Occasions can arise within commercial and industrial premises wherethe protection provided by a Type AF Air Gap is not adequate tocover the contamination risk of a Fluid Category 5 application. Inthese circumstances a higher degree of protection must be adopted.

Fluid Category 5The Regulations advise that a Type AB Air Gap must protectmains water supplies to any cistern installation providing storagefor applications defined as a Fluid Category 5.

For closed top cisterns, Type AB Air Gap protection is requiredincorporating the use of a Weir Spill Slot in the cistern sidewallto act as the emergency overflow. Figure 6 advises the basiccistern configuration to meet this requirement.

Figure 6: Similar to old Type A Air Gap

The specific design details of a Type AB Air Gap is identified inBSEN 13077: 2003 “Devices to prevent pollution by backflow ofpotable water – Air gap with non circular overflow (unrestricted)– Family A, type B”.

It is acceptable to have the slot opening screened provided thesize of the slot is increased in proportion to the obstructionimposed by the installation of the screening material.

SummaryMost cistern applications, whether domestic, commercial orindustrial, can be accommodated by the adoption of Type AF AirGap protection to the mains inlet supply.

Cistern applications, which in part at least require the storedwater to supply an industrial process, laboratory, etc, can beaccommodated by adopting Type AB Air Gap protection to themains inlet supply.

Additional information on determining the classification of afluid category is obtained from the WRAS IGN publicationnumber 9-04-04.
