Water treatment for a dairy plant
Industry Beverage industry, Food industryApplication Boiler water, Ingredient water, Process water, Rinse waterCountry Norway
Description
A change in the water quality from the municipal drinking water made the water harder. Because of thechange in hardness, they needed to start to treat the inlet water to the dairy with a softening plant. Thetreated water is used for ingredient water for dairy production, as boiler water and for various cleaning(CIP) processes. It was a requirement from the customer that the water had a certain hardness. Therefore the soft wateris mixed in with a certain percent municipal drinking water to have some calcium and magnesium saltsin the water. The water is first filtered through two parallel, 50 µm backwash filters, then through aduty-standby softening unit and at the end, the water goes through UV disinfection units. The dairy produces heavy cream, milk, yoghurt, sour cream, juice and ice-tea.
