Because of the change in hardness, they needed to start to treat the inlet water to the dairy with a softening plant. The treated water is used for ingredient water for dairy production, as boiler water and for various cleaning (CIP) processes. It was a requirement from the customer that the water had a certain hardness. Therefore the soft water is mixed in with a certain percent municipal drinking water to have some calcium and magnesium salts in the water. The water is first filtered through two parallel, 50 µm backwash filters, then through a duty-standby softening unit and at the end, the water goes through UV disinfection units.
