1. Turn it off - 40 HP motor running 4 extra hours per day = $1,500/yr.

2. Tune it up - Reliable and calibrated measuring instruments to measure PSI, Flow, Level, etc.

3. Fix the leaks (Lost water = Lost energy)

4. Meet loads efficiently - Are you throttling pumps using a valve?

5. Question Assumptions -Just because you’ve “always done it that way”, doesn’t mean it’s the most efficient way

6. Do it Right the first time - Are you pumping water twice?

7. Make it a Habit – Sustaining change is challenging. Use SOPs and clear instructions to stay on track/avoid falling back to old ways

Seven (7) Quick Wins – Ways to talk to your team

32 I Water Supply Power Optimization - PNWSAWWA Conference May 2017

Page 33: Water Supply Power Optimization (Efficiency 101)

1. Have an energy policy and educate the entire team

2. Use storage effectively & use most efficient sources of supply

3. Eliminate the Five L’s (Looping, Leaping, Losing, Loading, Leaking.

4. Redesign pumps to match conditions, Use VFDs

5. Consistent operational procedures, optimized pressures

6. Perform routine maintenance on equipment

7. Use Data to Track performance

It’s Not One Thing, It’s Everything
