Water Security for All 2037

The ministry has developed the 2050 Strategy and update its national water resources plan till 2037 on the governorates level.

NWRP 2017-20374 Pillars

The Extreme Events(National Strategy)

1) Drought:• The main source of fresh water is the river Nile ( 95 % of our renewable water

resources comes from outside Egypt), the climate change would impact the amount of flow of the Nile.

• The Water is released from the High Aswan Dam ( Lake Nasser reservoir ) to fulfill the different uses ( Municipal , Industrial and Agricultural) according to the NWRP.

• Water Distribution Sector -MWRI in coordination with the other concerned stakeholders, is the responsible organ for managing and allocating the water resources, controlling the quantity of water using the different hydraulic structures ( barrages ) along the river and main canals

• Programs under NWRP: Desalination in coastal areas, Modern irrigation , Water reuse , water harvesting in areas other than Nile valley, Groundwater.

The Extreme Events cont.(National Strategy)

2) Flash Floods: • Since 2000, (i.e. in years 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2012 and 2015),

frequent, flash floods have been recorded due to climate change.• To confront and reduce their destructive effects, the government has developed

GUIDELINE for the management of crises and disasters ,likely to occur, as well as benefit the harvested water in irrigation.

• This guide helps to deal with the crisis of flash floods, outlines the institutional arrangements and procedures to be followed by all the concerned authorities during all stages (before - during - after the floods).

Measures

• Stage 1 - Before flash floods:1. Maintaining and preparing the monitoring stations2. Cleaning the pathways3. Flood notification and forecasting system4. Circulating warning information before the event by 3 days5. Preparing crisis demos ( equipment, mobilaztion plan, …etc )

Measures

• Stage 2 – during flash floods:1. Photographing and recording the phenomena 2. Raise the maximum degree of readiness 3. Population resettlements if needed4. Temporal protection for the affected areas5. Providing the required health care for the affected peoples6. Instant reporting to decision makers

Measures

• Stage 3 – after flash floods:1. Starting the reconstruction to maintain the affected areas2. Evaluating the performance of existing constructions and

starting new studies3. Network data collection and calibration4. Defining the positive impacts (water harvesting)
