A wide range of spatial data analysis required for the
water sector from basin scale to plot level can be
achieved using Geographical Information Systems. In
short, the application dimensions of Geo-Informatics
technologies in the water sector are immense.
In this background, the Geo-Informatics Society of Sri
Lanka together with Cap-Net Lanka (Capacity Building
Network for Integrated Water Resources Management)
has taken the initiative to organize the Seventh Water
Professionals’ Day Symposium on October 01, 2009.
University academics, professionals of several research
institutes and non-governmental organizations join
hands with the GISSL and Cap-Net Lanka to support
this activity. This symposium will enable researchers
and professionals in the water sector to have a fruitful
discussion on ongoing research and management
activities with respect to the water resources research of
the nation and to bring proposals on efficient and
sustainable utilization of water resources for continued
prosperity in the water sector. The papers presented will
be published in the Water Professionals’ Day
proceedings which will be released at the symposium.
Date: October 01, 2009 Venue: Professor R.R. Appaturai Auditorium of the
Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya.

The Water Professionals’ Day Symposium was
initiated on October 04, 2003 to promote water
resources research, facilitate dissemination of
research information and to encourage dialogue
among stakeholders in the water sector in Sri Lanka.
Subsequently, symposia for Water Professionals were
organized at Peradeniya every year on October 01. It
was evident that these symposia have been an
incentive to develop innovative and multidisciplinary
research in water resources and related sectors in
Sri Lanka. The fate of water resources in a changing
climate, managing sectoral demand for water,
sustenance of water quality, treatment and reuse of
waste water, health and sanitation issues related to
water resources utilization and management, water
rights & conflicts and policies & regulations related to
water have been the major themes focused on
research presentations and discussions in the past
Water Professionals’ Day events. Further, the need
for better techniques and management strategies for
our water resources have been highlighted throughout
the symposia. In the proceedings of the symposia, a
considerable collection of water resources related
literature has been compiled and published for the
benefit of a wider group of readers. The opportunities
provided at the symposium for budding water
professionals to meet the experts in the sector have
been highly appreciated by the students and young
professionals in this sector.
The Geo-Informatics too play a significant role in
water resources conservation and management. The
use of Geo-Informatics in the water sector has been
found in abundance. Dynamic spatial data required
for water resources planning and management are
provided from remote sensing sources. Location
information for hydraulic and other water
management structures can be conveniently collected
and updated using GPS.
Call for Papers

include an abstract of not more than 300 words,
introduction, methodology with materials used (if
relevant), findings, discussion, conclusions &
recommendations and references. Innovative styles of
writing are also welcome. If figures or graphs are
included, they should be clear and printed in black &
white and the number of figures/ graphs should not
exceed four. The total number of pages should not
