Water Networks Access Solutions IntroductionEN 124 Standard

The EN 124 standard

EJ are members of the EN124 review committee and by March 2017 when EN124:1994 becomes invalid, EJ products shall satisfy the harmonised standard hEN124: 2015 and be CE approved.

The FACTA specification is also available within the construction industry and outlined below are some of the key differences between EN124 and FACTA requirements.

Permanent Set reading - residual deflectionEN 124 requirementThe Permanent Set reading must be taken after applying 2/3 of the test load 5 times. The Permanent Set reading must be taken at the geometric centre of the cover (measured where the load is applied and the worst case scenario). Acceptable Permanent set for class C250 and above: (7.8 a&c) = 1/300*(600*1) = 2mm & (7.8b) =1/500*(600*1) = 1.2mm.

FACTA requirement The Permanent Set reading only recorded on removal of the 5th test load. The Permanent Set reading can be taken anywhere on the cover. Acceptable Permanent set for class C and above shall NOT exceed test opening multiplied by 0.8%.(600x600mm x 0.8% = 4.8mm)In conclusion the EN 124 Standard defines a significantly higher point load, as well as a lower limitation of the Permanent Set. The combined effect demands products which are more durable than FACTA requires and the units will withstand the test of time, whilst retaining the performance of any features such as: odour seals, locking systems, safety blocking mechanisms, surface flatness etc.

The following specifications insist on the use of the EN 124 Standard, and stipulate that EN 124 Standard is a minimum performance standard. Therefore only EN 124 complaint products should be used on these Networks / Assets.

Sewers for AdoptionD2.17 INSPECTION CHAMBER COVERS AND FRAMES1. Inspection chamber covers and frames shall comply with the relevant provisions of BS EN 124, BS 7903 and Highways Agency Guidance Document HA 104/09. They shall be of a non rocking design which does not rely on the use of cushion inserts.(i) BS EN 124 is a minimum performance standard only.

Sewers for Scotland4.2.33 MANHOLE COVERS FRAMES AND INSPECTION CHAMBERS1. Manhole covers and frames shall comply with the relevant provisions of BS “EN 124”, BS 7903 and the ‘Design Manual for Roads and Bridges: HA/104/09 Geotechnics and Drainage: (ii) BS EN 124 is a minimum performance Standard only.

Lift Assistance is provided by a corrosion-resistant stainless steel mechanical spring strut. The rugged design is clean and maintenance free. The strut takes up less space in the clear opening than traditional spring assist. It is fullyself-contained, which avoids high stress exposed coils.

Made without internal gases orseals, the struts have an effectiveoperating temperature rangeof -34°C to + 200°C. The durability has been tested at over 150,000 cycles.

Important In order to allow for an unobstructed clear opening the spring jack can be completely dismantled.

The MPIC® multi-tool pick bar design eliminates surface water inflow and provides a solid point of contact for most removal tools (hooks, pry bars,pick-axes, and lift assist mechanisms).

Benefit The EJ access cover solution eliminated the need for a large crane on site, which resolved logistical issues with the small access road.

Impact The installation of a safe and fully compliant product to the specification, which facilitates the day to day management of the asset offers the client reassurance that the highest standards are being met.

Solution Details Our design had to be modular to allow for transportation of the 4 meter x 4 meter fabricated steel cover and frame down a small access track and also be capable of supporting the CSO Screen on one side via Hanger Brackets which were specially designed to support this weight requirement. This involved a total of six site visits and sixteen design revisions.

The frame was delivered in modules to facilitate handling on site and once assembled larger panels were lifted into position. Where required, the larger access panels incorporated access points to equipment, these access points are correctly positioned and sized to permit the carrying out of operational tasks safely. To quote the Contractor installing the cover “we didn’t even have to adjust a bolt, as everything lined up exactly” which lead to an effective and efficient install. The unit was installed in 2013 and continues to perform to its specification.

Solution Details EJ worked closely with Scottish Water, URS and the appointed contractor to design a bespoke F900 access cover system to operate and maintain the pumping chamber. The previous Aluminium product had failed repeatedly and SW had to find a resolution in order to maintain a safe and functional environment.

Following acceptance of our bespoke design, EJ also provided on site installation assistance, three experienced Engineers attended site for two full days overseeing and assisting the assembly and installation. SW, as well as Aberdeen Harbour Board were and continue to be pleased with the solution and services to date.

By increasing the thickness of zinc coating through galvanisation, we can extend the service life of the unit. All fabricated steel access covers by EJ are galvanised after manufacture in accordance with BS ISO 1461. This standard for corrosion protection is sufficient in most environments.

However, for project sites with greater exposure to corrosion, EJ has also developed processes to effectively and sustainably increase rust prevention. By increasing the thickness of the zinc to 140 μm, the service life can be doubled.

Installation InstructionsFlush Fit - FF or Flush Shallow - FS covers and frames

1. Handle the product with slings. Check the load capacity of the slings according to the weight indicated on the product drawings.

2. Rebate: a) Prepare a rebate corresponding to the dimensions and material shown on the product drawings. Concrete 3000 psi (20 MPa) minimum and concrete block full solid 12MPa minimum b) Clean the rebate surfaces.

3. Installation, levelling and shuttering: a) Centre the product over the clear opening of the chamber. Refer to product drawings or if necessary temporarily open the hatch and then close it after centering. b) It is important that all anchor support points are utilised to secure the product. Anchor bolts should not be over tightened, as this can cause frame distortion/deformation. c) Create form work /shuttering if necessary. d) It is imperative that the covers are completely closed/secured while levelling the frame and during the rebate curing process.

4. Fixing: a) Prepare the concrete seal according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Concrete 3000 psi (20 MPa minimum) A quick-setting non shrinking mortar is recommended if normal curing time for standard mortar cannot be secured (minimum 7 days). b) Pack up the mortar under frame and along the formwork. The frame must be fully in contact with the fixing material to ensure a uniform distribution of the load and avoid distortions. c) Fill the rebate unless a layer of asphalt is specified, in which case a 20 mm depth must be left unfilled. d) Cover the filled rebate with wet canvas or tarpaulin to prevent excessive drying. Wait for complete curing of concrete.

5. Finishing a) Remove shuttering. b) Render the chamber wall with mortar if necessary. c) Open the cover and clean the entire product with water if necessary. d) Close the product.

The product is ready for use.

b) Place anchor bolts into each of the Ø22 mm holes in the frame. If the frame is in several pieces, each piece must be secured. It is important that all anchor support points are utilised to secure the product (especially on long units with multiple hinge locations) Anchor bolts should not be over tightened, as this can cause frame distortion/deformation

4. Fixing: a) If required, pack up the mortar under the frame. The frame must be fully in contact with the fixing material to ensure a uniform distribution of load and avoid distortion.

5. Finishing a) Clean the entire product with water if necessary. b) To ensure tightness, provide a seal between the frame and the chamber with a suitable sealant. c) Close the product.

The product is ready for use.
