Water Management6
Rise to water challengesWater is one of the greatest current and future global challenges
Weather patterns are changing. Extreme temperatures, heat waves and heavy precipitation events will become more frequent all over the world.
Cities are growing. Every second the urban population grows by 2 people. The amount of water caused by intense rainfall overwhelms the capacity of the drainage systems.
Damage by excess water or drought is a significant problem for municipalities, insurers, companies and residents. One of the main challenges is to protect people and cities against economic losses and devastating social and environmental impacts.
Thus, sustainable Water Management is needed to build resilience, together with the right policies, partners and tools. To rise to the global water challenges, our innovative and sustainable stone wool based water management products have been developed to shape a better world for today and tomorrow.

under any weather condition
■ buffer large volumes of water
■ retain rainfall runoff locally ■ contribute to groundwater
recharge
Water Management8
Applications ■ Sports pitches ■ Landscaping ■ Infrastructure
Soil structure must be functional and should preserve environmental quality. Water needs to be balanced during different weather conditions. Lapinus WM soil conditioner is a sand-coloured material based on natural stone. The product alters the physical structure of the soil to improve stability and the overall water balance.
Multiple functionality
High drain and buffer capacity Improve drainage and buffering of excess surface water with increased void spaces in the ground structure.
Improve water absorption and retentionImprove the wicking effect and water holding capacity by the action of capillarity force, especially during drier weather conditions.
Reinforce soil structureSupport the cohesion of the ground particles by providing a 3D network.
Durable Lasts for a lifetime because the material is inorganic. This makes the product resistant to all weather conditions.
Sustainable Made out of 100% natural stone which means the product is friendly to the natural environment and recyclable for other purposes.

Applications ■ Domestic housing ■ Sport and leisure ■ Infrastructure ■ Residential regions ■ Utility & public areas
The increasing levels of rainfall over short periods of time in urban regions will lead to more overflows in districts without sufficient buffering and infiltration facilities. Lapinus WM aquifer elements are highly porous. Because of a usable volume of 95% the elements are extremely suitable for buffering precipitation.
Support natural water balance
Dry feetThe drainage and buffer capacity ensure that the rainwater doesn’t remain on the streets.
Rain water as a resource Through infiltration the valuable rain water is returned to the environment.
Optimal use of the available space The material can bear weight allowing the space on top of the water management provision to be still available for various applications.
Low-maintenance There is no risk of contamination in the components because of the fine pore structure. The outer layer acts as a natural filter.
Easy to installThe adaptable material is flexible for adjustment during and after installation without compromising quality and performance.
Durable Lasts for a lifetime because the material is inorganic. This makes the product resistant to all weather conditions.
SustainableMade out of 100% natural stone which means the product is friendly to the natural environment and recyclable for other purposes.

MechanismsStone wool has an open space of 95% between the 3D fibre network. This allows for large quantities of water to be absorbed over a short period of time.
The stone wool system can be designed in such way that the volume is available again for the next rain shower within 24 hours. This can be done by infiltration, free outflow or a combination of the both.
The fine pores of the 3D network ensure that particles that are transported with the water are not able to enter the package. A carefully designed system therefore has a long service life with minimal maintenance.
The fibre cohesion gives the material a high load capacity. As a consequence constructions can be designed to suit several applications varying from gardens to road construction.

“TopGrow®-fields:Sportive,safeandaffordable!”
“Football players want to play on safe fields that are available throughout the whole season. Traditional natural grass pitches form the ideal sports surface, but the top layer is vulnerable to both dry and wet conditions. With the use of stone fibres, the stability of the top layer of a natural grass pitch can be improved significantly and there is a positive effect on the water balance. Stone wool is completely safe and maintenance of these fields is similar to that of ordinary pitches. Because natural grass pitches have a lifetime of thirty years, football remains affordable for everyone.”
Jochem Knol – Senior advisor/projectmanager, Sweco Nederland B.V.
InspirationInspiring examples to demonstrate how Lapinus WM products can be used in different solutions.
Lapinus WM products add value to sportspitches:
■ Safe & comfortable playing surface ■ Extended seasons ■ Green fields ■ Increased playing hours ■ Reduced maintenance costs
SportA high-quality pitch is the basis for every sport. Eachsport is unique. Not only in the way it is played, but alsoin the kind of surface it requires. Different materialscan be used to create a good sports pitch, resulting in acomfortable and safe place to play sport.

“Naturebasedsolutionforcircularwatermanagement.”
“The first results of project SmartRoof 2.0 in Amsterdam show temperature differences of 40 °C between a standard roof and a BlueGreen roof with the Permavoid® system and wicking Lapinus® cones. With BlueGreen solutions, paved surfaces such as rooftops and podium decks, are transformed in to growing green oasis, which cool the environment by means of reflecting sunlight and evaporating water. The synergy between the Permavoid® system and the Lapinus® cones allow plants to grow, fulfill their function; all without the use of pumps, hoses, valves or energy. The combination between our sustainable water management products and Lapinus has created the optimum nature based solution for circular water management.”
Rozanne van Vliet - Permavoid and SWDSystems
LandscapingThe population continues to grow and more and more communities are looking for outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and sustainable. A sustainable park in urban regions preserves natural resources and promotes quality of life for the people around it.

Water Management13
Disconnecting rainwaterIn urban areas water is often unable to infiltrate into the soil because of buildings and paved surfaces. As a result, runoff flows across rooftops, roadways, sidewalks and eventually reaches the sewage system. If the sewer does not have enough capacity, this results in flooding.
Lapinus WM products add value to rainfallrunoffprojects:
■ Reduced local flooding ■ Groundwater recharge and baseflow in
nearby streams ■ Reduced peak flows in sewer ■ Reduced operational costs

If no open water bodies are within reach and the groundwater table is not too high, rainfall infiltration can solve flooding problems. If it’s not possible to infiltrate water, the storage of rainwater and a delayed drainage to the sewer can often be a solution.
Water Management14
VentilationWhen designing a larger rainwater buffer system it’s important to consider the ventilation. During light rainfall the air can often escape through the inlet or the soil. However during heavy showers for which a buffer system is constructed, ventilation can be a restrictive element. For this reason, when designing an infiltration system using Lapinus WM elements, the water supply is placed at the bottom. The ventilation can be found in the top of the elements. This way the buffer always will be filled with water rapidly enough to prevent nuisance.
Entry speed Depending on the design.Infiltration Fully determined by the sub-surfaceFree outflow to e.g. sewer Depending on the design, in 24 hoursPermeability 200m/dayLoad capacity Can be designed to accommodate various traffic classesMaintenance Minimal
FiltrationThe fibre structure of the Lapinus WM elements is small enough to filter out fine silt particles. The advantage being that the use of geotextile is not needed and that the infiltration capacity is secured over a long period - even from the bottom. However it’s advisable to prevent an excessive amount of solid particles from entering the supply pipes with the rainwater. This is possible by using leaf/sand filters. Alternatively a filter drain can be used allowing all the rainwater to flow through exchangeable Lapinus WM elements. This way the clean water can freely flow into the package.

Lapinus WM products add value when installingswales:
■ Increase buffer capacity ■ Easier maintenance of vegetation ■ Usable green area for residents
SwaleLapinus® WM stone wool elements can contain up to 95% of water. By installing them under a swale, the buffer and infiltration capacity is improved considerably permitting the water to sink beneath ground level more quickly. The swale will also be less deep, making it much easier to maintain. The surface of the swale becomes a green area which in practice can be used by the residents.
Also already existing swales can be upgraded this way. In that case the bottom of the swale is slightly deepened to install the Lapinus® elements. The soil, potentially enriched with soil improver, will be poured back and sown.

BufferBy adding soil improver- optionally Lapinus WM Soil improver- to the soil cover on the elements, water will go through the bottom in the elements more quickly.
FiltrationNormally an overflow inlet will also be installed which will come into force as soon as the water exceeds a certain level. The overflow inlet is connected to the Lapinus elements through a filter drain. The filter also contains Lapinus WM elements and prevents blockage in unreachable areas. This way the functioning of the swale is guaranteed for a very long period.
DelayingandinfiltratingBy natural infiltration, the water will permeate from the elements through the soil beneath. The speed at which this occurs completely depends on the subsurface. The flow rate of the elements is at such a level that it’s not restrictive. If a discharge on the sewage system or open water sources is chosen, a specific design will be made that ensures the swale has reached a sufficient buffer capacity within 24 hours again.
