Water

Water is a basic necessity of life, not only for people but for every type of plant and animal as well.

Water accounts for about 65% of our body weight.

If we lost as little as 12% of it, we would soon die.

IrrigationSince the dawn of time, human beings have harnessed water to improve their lives.

In some ways, the history of civilization is the story of how we have made water work for us in ever more ingenious ways.

As early as 5000 B.C., our predecessors used irrigation to increase crop production.

Flushing out clean water?Archaeologists have found water-flushed toilets dating back to 2750 B.C.

Sweden is rich in waterThere are almost 100 000 lakes in Sweden.

These lakes account for 9% of the total area of the country.

From there we can take our drinking water.

How much water do you need?Every day Swedes on average use 160 liters of water per person.

In many other places only 10 liters of water is used per person per day.

We found out that we could not get by with 10 liters

A toilet flushing is between 3-6 liters if you have a reasonably new toilet.

Old toilets can contain as much as 12 liters.

Only there the clean water is flushed away!

Water stressedMore than one in every six people in the world is water stressed, meaning that they do not have access to potable water.

Those that are water stressed make up 1.1 billion people in the world and are living in developing countries.

So how can we change people's attitude?Starting with the young ones, therefore we have put together some easy and clear experiments with water during our enrichment class.

Experiments for kids

1) Water and Oil

The experiment is done by pouring oil into water.

This experiment can be applied in real life in case of oil spills

2) Gravity Free Water

the experiment is done by putting a paper under a glass of water and putting it upside down

3) Leak-proof bag

Fill a sandwich bag with water and seal it tight. Then quickly stick sharp pencils through the bag and out the other side. The bag will not leak

Other ways...

Organise an afternoon with water as a theme in “Stockholm”

Research on plants that need little water or helps to retain water in soil

Come up with ideas on how we can make the IPC-back yard more green and maybe built up on recycled material(such as a playing house made out of pet bottles.)

Survey on trash around our lakes and waters

The survey have been designed and distributed by our student group in enrichment.

The material have not yet been analysed but will be so till we have our early enrichment assembly in May.

After that we are happy to share with you the result.
