WATCH ME WINS THE ROTHSCHILD
Alexander Tamagni-Bodmer and Regula Vannod=s Watch Me
(Fr) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) had the obvious form claims for
Sunday=s G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville and all went to script
for last year=s G1 Coronation S. winner as she outbattled Half
Light (Ire) (Shamardal) and Know It All (GB) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn})
for the win. Tracking Godolphin=s Summer Romance (Ire)
(Kingman {GB}) throughout the early stages, the 7-10 favourite
got the split on the rail to edge ahead approaching the 300-
metre marker and stayed on to score by 3/4 of a length from
Half Light, who denied Know It All for second by a short head.
AIt was not easy today and we=ve been lucky the gap opened
on the inside so we could save every inch of ground,@ a relieved
winning rider Pierre-Charles Boudot explained. AIf I=d had to
come around them, it might have been a very different outcome
as she was struggling bit at the end. Maybe she needs further
now.@
Watch Me came to the fore with success in the G3 Prix
Imprudence over seven furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte last April
and may have been unlucky when subsequently sixth in the G1
Poule d=Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp the following
month. Taken to the G1 Coronation S. in a daring move which
demonstrated the regard in which she was held by Francis-Henri
Graffard, she justified that bravery by upsetting Hermosa (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) in the Royal Ascot feature before earning a break.

GRASS IS GREENER AT KENTUCKY DOWNSBy Kelsey Riley
The most savvy European horse people have long had autumn
dates annually etched onto their calendars at courses like
Woodbine, Arlington, Keeneland and Belmont, where sizable
purses are up for the taking for those enterprising enough to
travel.
As the tempo begins to climb toward those fall features,
however, there is another American racecourse that has gotten
first run, and it is possible you have never even heard of it.
Beginning on Sept. 7 through Sept. 16, The Runhappy Meet at
Kentucky DownsBsituated 2 1/2 hours southwest of Lexington
on the Tennessee borderBwill stage its annual turf-only meet
over six days offering $10 million in purses on the grass with the
maximum payout available to Kentucky-breds.

Pierre-Charles Boudot celebrates after winning the Prix Rothschild
aboard Watch Me | Scoop Dyga
G1 Prix de Rothschild Cont. from p1
Back with a fourth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois over this
track and trip in August, the chestnut was trying 10 furlongs for
the first time when beaten just under a length in third in the
G1 Prix de l=Opera back at
ParisLongchamp on Arc day.
Finely-tuned for this with a win
in the course-and-distance
Listed Prix de la Calonne July 12,
she may have been fortunate
that the rail opened up when it
did as Summer Romance tired
quickly but there were no
excuses in behind and it would
be hard to argue that she was
not the best on the day.
AShe deserved this--it=s very
hard to win two of these but she
proved in the Opera in October
that she was not finished,@
Graffard commented. AShe stays
10 furlongs, which gives her more options and we=ll see how she
comes out of this. She can run in the Jacques le Marois, the [G1]
Jean Romanet or the Opera. Every time she has been beaten,
she has had a sound excuse and it=s a great credit to the team.@
Godolphin=s Lisa-Jane Graffard said of the up-and-coming
runner-up, who was stepping up off a win in the G3 Hamburger
Stutenmeile, AHalf Light produced another fantastic
performance and we are thrilled
with her. She never runs a bad
race and it was excellent work
by her trainer to bring her back
from Germany and get her fresh
and ready for this. We will see
how she comes out of today
before deciding where we go
from here, but everything she
has done so far has been
brilliant. She is by Shamardal
and from the family of Galileo
and Sea the Stars, so she has
really exciting breeding potential
for Godolphin.@

IT=S FRANKIE AGAIN AS MISS YODA STARS Capping a week to remember even by his exalted standards,
Frankie Dettori dropped in on Dusseldorf to whip up the crowd
as he steered the Westerberg colour-bearer Miss Yoda (Ger)
(Sea the Stars {Ire}) to glory in the G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana. On
the front from the outset and allowed her own terms, the June 5
Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial winner was only headed briefly in
early straight as Silence Please (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) loomed
but when shaken up forged a 3/4-of-a-length success from
Zamrud (Ger) (Samum {Ger}), who nosed out Virginia Joy (Ger)
(Soldier Hollow {GB}) for the runner=s-up spot.
AShe jumped good and I wanted to be in front--after that she
was flowing with a lovely action,@ commented Dettori who in
the last eight days had won on the household names Enable
(GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire})
and ridden a winner for The Queen on his home track at
Newmarket. AWhen I turned for home she was thinking of going
back to the stables, so she stopped a bit but I told her to
concentrate and away she went.@ Cont. p4

G1 Henkel Preis der Diana Cont.
Losing her unbeaten tag on her third and final juvenile start
when runner-up in the G3 Zetland S. over 10 furlongs at
Newmarket in October, Miss Yoda had returned to garner the
Oaks Trial despite not handling Lingfield=s undulations and all
Epsom aspirations were dashed there and then. Instead tried in
Royal Ascot=s G2 Ribblesdale S. June 16, she was sixth there and
was too keen when fourth in the 13-furlong G3 Bahrain Trophy
back at Newmarket July 9. Enjoying an easy lead despite not
always looking at home on this tight circuit, she was hanging left
and looking likely to be swamped as Silence Please launched her
challenge inside the final 300 metres. Quickly regaining
momentum, the 5-1 shot was soon re-asserting as that Irish
raider hung away her chance and it was another group 1 for her
powerful connections.
Pedigree Notes The dam Monami (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}), whose yearling colt
by Kingman (GB) was bought for 340,000gns by Baroda Stud at
the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, was the winner of the G2
Diana-Trial and the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin as well as
finishing third in the G1 Premio di Vittorio di Capua. She is kin to
the G1 Oaks d=Italia heroine Meridiana (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}),
whose four stakes performers are headed by Chamois (Smart
Strike) who was placed in the GII Dixie S. This is the family of the
smart group 3-winning stayer Moonshiner (Ger) (Adlerflug
{Ger}) and the G2 Diana-Trial winner Meergorl (Ger), also by
Adlerflug. Monami also has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old colt by
Amaron (GB) named Mahanadi {GB}) and a foal full-sister to
Miss Yoda to come.

CAIRN GORM TAKES THE CABOURG Unbeaten entering Sunday=s G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg, Cairn
Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) kept his tally secure with a
battling effort in the Deauville sunshine. Helped by the fact that
his compatriot and the 11-10 market-leader Mighty Gurkha (Ire)
(Sepoy {Aus}) was left at the start, the chestnut who was
carrying the Hunscote Stud colours tracked the pace and was
perfectly positioned before hitting the front passing the furlong
pole. Asserting from there under Tom Marquand, the 17-5
second favourite scored by a length from Jubilation (Ire)
(Acclamation {GB}), with a head back to Prince Lancelot (GB) (Sir
Prancealot {Ire}) in third.
AHe=s a very nice horse and the ground was quick enough for
him today, so he was a little bit hesitant early on,@ the winning
rider commented. AWhen he found his stride, he really went and
is still undefeated. Whether he=s good enough for a higher level
or not you=d only know when you tried.@
This was an inspired piece of placing by connections, with
Cairn Gorm having previous won on debut at Windsor June 22
and when under a subsequent penalty at Newbury July 8.
Trainer Mick Channon said, AWe thought he was a nice horse,
but he had to step up today and he has. He=s won a Group 3
going away, so we=ll have to think about taking him back here
for the [G1] Prix Morny later in the month.@
Pedigree Notes Cairn Gorm is out of In Your Time (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is
a three-parts sister to the G3 Musidora S. winner Time Away
(Ire) by Dalakhani=s sire Darshaan (GB). Her own descendants
are headed by the G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Cursory Glance
(Distorted Humor), while she is kin to the G1 Prix de Diane
runner-up Time Ahead (GB) (Spectrum {Ire}) and the listed-
placed Moment of Time (GB) (Rainbow Quest). She is in turn the
dam of the G2 Crystal Mile scorer Chief Ironside (GB) (Lawman
{Fr}). The third dam is the four-times Group 1-winning champion
Time Charter (Ire) (Saritamer) who was also responsible for the
G2 Jockey Club S.-winning pair Time Allowed (GB) (Sadler=s
Wells) and Zinaad (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). In Your Time=s

SANORA ON TOP AT DUSSELDORF Third behind the G1 Prix Rothschild runner-up Half Light (Ire)
(Shamardal) in the G3 Hamburger Stutenmeile last time July 12,
Sanora (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) gave further credence to that
form when winning Sunday=s G3 Fritz Henkel Stiftung-Rennen at

positive tactics and after shadowing the leader was sent to the
front passing two out en route to a half-length success from

The six-day Kentucky Downs meet in September
is worth $10-million | Coady
Kentucky Downs Cont. from p1
There are 16 stakes races slated, five of which are graded. The
richest opportunity is the $1-million GIII Calumet Farm Kentucky
Turf Cup going a mile and a half for 3-year-olds and
olderBLeopardstown=s G3 Kilternan S. run on the same day over
the same distance is worth approximately $112,000, and the
next day=s G2 Prix Foy has a purse of $146,000. The Runhappy
Meet at Kentucky Downs will host stakes over a mile and six
furlongs for 3-year-olds and older, the Listed Tourist Mile for
$750,000 and the GIII Runhappy Turf Sprint worth $700,000 and
part of the Breeders= Cup Challenge SeriesBthere are Group 1s
happening during the same week in Europe worth less money.
During a time of year in Europe where restricted 3-year-old
opportunities at the pattern level have largely disappeared,
Kentucky Downs has four stakes for that generation highlighted
by the Listed Gun Runner Dueling Grounds Derby and the Exacta
Systems Dueling Grounds Oaks over 2100 metres and worth
$750,000 and $500,000, respectively. There are four black-type
opportunities for 2-year-olds both colts and fillies over 6 1/2
furlongs and a mile with purses from $400,000 to $500,000,
while the eight Group 2 and 3 2-year-old races during the same
week in Britain, Ireland and France range from $80,000 to
$170,000. Even maiden races at the meet are worth $90,000
and allowance races up to $100,000. Purses of black-type races
at Kentucky Downs include a 40% to 50% contribution from the
Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund and those extra
funds are restricted to horses bred in the state. Therefore,
bringing a Kentucky-bred back to its home turf is the most
lucrative option.
Both the purses and the KTDF are fueled largely by Kentucky
Downs=s on-site casino, which features historical horse racing
games where players wager on real races that have already
been run but are randomly selected from a library and have had
the horses= names removed.
AOur purses are the largest daily purses in the world except for
Japan,@ said Ted Nicholson, Kentucky Downs=s senior vice
president and general manager. AThe purse structure is
generated primarily through historical horse racing, which has
become very popular in Kentucky. In a normal year we would
generate approximately $20 million in purse money that has to
be distributed. Last year our purse structure here was about
$11.5 million, and we had sent $5.2 million to Ellis Park. So
between the two meets last year we were close to $17 million
and we had projected to be just shy of $20 million for this year
before COVID kind of put the stop to everybody=s fun.@
Indeed, COVID-19 threw a bit of a wrench in the track=s
upward momentum with its casino closed for three months
between March and June, but that proved to be a minor blip on
the radar. Nicholson reported business to be strong since the
casino=s patrons were welcomed back on June 10.
The ever-shrinking world of bloodstock trade means that
Kentucky-breds are sprinkled across the globe, and Nicholson
explained why the Kentucky Downs meeting is a lucrative
opportunity for European horsemen to bring their Kentucky-
breds back to their place of birth.
AA small percentage of each wager on our gaming floor goes
toward the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund,@ he
said. Cont. p8
TDN EUROPE • PAGE 8 OF 16 • THETDN.COM MONDAY • 3 AUGUST 2020
Kentucky Downs has a >European style= course | Coady
Kentucky Downs Cont.
AUltimately, our purses are eye-opening because of the KTDF,@
he continued. AWe have a race on Sept. 10 called the Gun
Runner Dueling Grounds Derby and it=s for 3-year-olds going 1
5/16 miles [2100 metres] and the purse is $750,000. Half of
that, $375,000, is from the KTDF. So if you came here with a
[non Kentucky-bred] and won that race, you=re running for
$375,000. But if you=re a Kentucky-bred you=re running for
$750,000. So it=s dramatic. Most of the stakes are about a 50%
enhancement which comes from the KTDF. If you have a
Kentucky-bred and you=re not racing here, you need to scratch
your head a little bit.@
While coronavirus restrictions will make travel details from
Europe to Kentucky in 2020 a challenge, the meeting
traditionally holds a slot on the calendar where it could be used
as a prep some Woodbine=s high-profile turf cards or the
Breeders= Cup when travel does become commonplace again.
AThe way our meet is positioned seven weeks in front of the
Breeders= Cup does set us up pretty well to get horses here,
have them run for a sizeable purse and if they run well they=re
going to set themselves up well for a nice run in the Breeders=
Cup,@ Nicholson said.
And while the large prize pots are a nice perk for the humans,
the horses will enjoy a course something akin to what they have
at home. Kentucky Downs is not a traditional American oval, but
rather a wide, sweeping and undulating course.
AIn most spots the course is over 120-feet wide,@ Nicholson
said. AWhen you look at it from the announcer=s booth you can
see the course elevating up the backstretch and then as they go
around the far turn the course does dip down; it=s not dramatic
but it is noticeable. There is a little jog to the right as they=re
about to go into the far turn. It=s a very unique course. It=s 1
5/16 miles [2100 metres] around. Most of the races are one-
turn because we can run up a mile and 70 yards going one-turn.
When we do run longer races they=re typically a mile and a half
or 1 5/16 miles. The jockeys love the course. Our track
superintendent, Butch Lehr, is very well known in the United
States and for about 30 years was the track superintendent at
Churchill Downs. So he knows his way around a blade of grass.@
During a time when it is becoming increasingly necessary to
shop around for the best purses on offer, Kentucky Downs is a
bright beacon for trainers with Kentucky-breds in their yards.
Already a hidden gem among the American racetrack
community, it is not likely to fly under the radar on the global
stage much longer.

as lot 469, the chestnut is one of 541 colts and geldings in and
out of training set to go under the hammer from Aug. 24-26.
There are also 214 fillies in and out of training, as well as 19
broodmares set to sell in Newmarket. A winner of the G2
Gimcrack S. and the G2 Champagne S. as a juvenile, Threat is out
of a daughter of European highweight Shiva (Jpn) (Hector
Protector) and is from the same family as European champion
Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
Originating as a response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,
the sale is very similar in format to the Tattersalls July Sale, and
features full drafts from Ballydoyle Stables, Godolphin,
Juddmonte Farms, Rabbah Bloodstock, Shadwell Stud, The
Castlebridge Consignment and Jamie Railton among many
others.
Other lots of interest include recent listed winner Surf Dancer
(Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) (lot 706) from William Haggas=s
Somerville Lodge Stables and fellow listed scorer Fort Myers
(War Front) (lot 387), one of nine from Ballydoyle. Of
Juddmonte=s 24 homebreds, GSP Georgeville (GB) (Dawn
Approach {Ire}) (lot 436), and the unraced Sophistry (GB) (Make
Believe {GB}) (lot 445), a half-sister to G1 Criterium de Saint-
Cloud hero Epicuris (GB) (Rail Link {GB}) star. Cont. p9

The Castlebridge Consignment fields 79 lots, the largest

half-sister to the late MG1SW and Group 1 sire Society Rock (Ire)
(Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), will be offered by Castlebridge with her
Exceed And Excel (Aus) colt at foot and carrying to sire-on-the-

AThe COVID related circumstances surrounding the decision to
introduce a Tattersalls August Sale are well documented and we
have been hugely encouraged by both the quality and quantity
of entries,@ said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony.
AOriginally pencilled in for two days, we have extended the sale
to three days to accommodate the number of entries and the
catalogue has the strength and depth that will appeal to a wide
cross section of buyers, both domestic and further afield.
Despite the current challenges, our recent July Sale achieved a
phenomenal 96% clearance rate which demonstrates the
enduring appeal of sales of this nature at Tattersalls, and we
have already received extremely positive feedback from our
myriad of overseas markets."
ANTOINE BOZO PASSES AT 83
Antoine Bozo, who formerly managed Haras du Mezeray for
almost 30 years, passed away on Saturday night, his son Henri
announced via Twitter on Sunday morning. He was 83.
AOur dear father Antoine Bozo passed away last night,@
Henri Bozo tweeted on Sunday morning. AHe had a beautiful
life. He loved his family. He loved horses and horseracing and
made many friends during his beautiful career.@
Prior to working at Mezeray, Bozo was part of the team at
Haras du Bois Roussel for Count Gerald Moulins de Rochefort.
Eventually, Bozo moved again, this time to Haras de Mortree.
In 1975, at the behest of Paul de Moussac, Bozo began his stint
at Haras du Mezeray. During Bozo=s tenure at the Normandy
stud, 1987 G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe winner Trempolino
(Sharpen Up {GB}) was foaled. The future Mezeray sire was
followed by Subotica (Fr) (Pampabird {GB}), who landed the
1992 Arc. Other notable horses originating from Mezeray during
this time period were 1988 GI Arlington Million hero Mill Native
(Exclusive Native) and in the 2000's, sire and GI Breeders= Cup
Mile victor Artie Schiller (El Prado {Ire}).
Bozo is survived by his wife, Claire, and four childrenBHenri,
Ghislain, Pierre-Antoine, and Anne-France.
Charles-Henri de Moussac told Jour de Galop, AIt=s more than a
collaborator that we lose, it=s a friend, a family member.@

COX PAIR BOUND FOR MORNY
GSWs Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and Nando Parrado
(GB) (Kodiac {GB}), both trained by Clive Cox, will clash in the G1
Prix Morny at Deauville on Aug. 23, all being well. The former
won the G2 Richmond S. at the Qatar Goodwood Festival on July
30 and claims two wins from three starts, while the latter broke
his maiden at second asking in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot
back in June. Cox is relishing the match up between two group-
class colts.
AWe=re very pleased with the way he=s come out of the race
this week,@ Cox said of his Richmond S. winner. AThat was the
first step and he will have an entry in the Prix Morny--we very
much think that six furlongs will continue to be his trip. The G1
Middle Park S. at the end of the year is our plan at this stage and
we couldn=t be more pleased with what he=s done.@
A minor injury scuppered plans for Nando Parrado to step
forward in the G2 Prix Robert Papin, but the son of Kodiac is
now in fine fettle 21 days out from the Morny.
Added Cox of Nando Parrado, AHe worked yesterday and we
were very pleased that he=s come through that work really well.
I am very pleased that we=re talking about the race [the Prix
Morny] for two really high-class 2-year-olds--a Coventry winner
and a Richmond winner. At the moment they would both be
intended runners, we=ll just have to see how it pans out. It=s just
a huge thrill to be talking in the same breath about two horses
of that calibre.
ANando Parrado would definitely cope with more ease in the
ground, if that was the case, but we can=t really be sure at this
time of year. Supremacy will very much be in charge of his own
well being in the mean time, having only run last week, but first
impressions are very favourable.@
AI would say he [Nando Parrado] could have the potential to go
a little further. He=s given me that impression--he=s a very
strong, athletic colt. I think six furlongs is clearly agreeable after
winning the Coventry as he did, but I think he has the scope and
potential to go a little bit further as well.@
DUKE OF HAZZARD AIMED AT MAROIS MGSW Duke of Hazzard (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who G3
Bonhams Thoroughbred S. and G2 Celebration Mile S. at
Goodwood last August, will now be pointed at the G1 Prix
Jacques le Marois. Unplaced in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal
Ascot upon resuming on June 16, the 4-year-old improved to
third in the G2 Summer Mile S. there on July 11 and went one
better in the July 28 G2 Lennox S. last out for trainers Paul and
Oliver Cole.
AI think the plan will be to go for the Jacques le Marois in a
couple of weeks= time,@ said Oliver Cole. AWe didn=t feel he was
quite right at Royal Ascot, but he came forward for his next run
there and he ran an absolute belter in the Lennox. He is a good
horse and going back up to a mile will help him. Hopefully he
should be spot on for the Marois.@
APPRENTICE JOCKEY TESTS POSITIVE FOR
CORONAVIRUS IN UK An apprentice jockey in the UK has tested positive for the
coronavirus, the British Horseracing Authority confirmed on
Sunday. The rider in question has not participated in a race
several weeks, but did recently attend a race meeting. The
identity of the apprentice has not been released. British racing
was halted in March until June 1 due to the ongoing coronavirus
pandemic. Once racing started up again, all racing personnel
have been operating under strict government guidelines and
safety protocols to ensure that social distancing is followed and
the chance of catching the virus is reduced. No crowds have
been allowed to watch the races, with moderate amounts of
owners finally allowed back recently. Cont. p11

AHaving been notified that an apprentice jockey had tested
positive for coronavirus, the BHA has worked with the health
protection agency, PJA, the jockey and their yard to assist their
employer in following government guidance and managing the
jockey=s recent close contacts,@ said a BHA spokesman. AA
handful of people have been identified and asked to self-isolate
for 14 days as a result. Further tests taken by close contacts
have not returned any further positive results.
AThe jockey in question has not taken a ride for a few weeks,
though attended a recent race meeting as a member of stable
staff, prior to showing any symptoms and before their positive
test. It remains important that everyone involved in the sport
follows government and racing guidelines and protocols around
social distancing and environment hygiene at all times.@

O=Brien is looking for a timely confidence boost for the full-

rival Zawara (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) achieved when second on the
same day here, but that Aga Khan Dermot Weld-trained

improvement is expected. This also features another Ballydoyle

Rip Van Winkle | Windsor Park Stud
WINDSOR PARK MOURNSLOSS OF RIP VAN WINKLE
By Bren O'Brien
Windsor Park Stud owner Rodney Schick has described the loss
of leading stallion Rip Van Winkle (Ire) after a bout of acute
laminitis on the eve of the breeding season as a significant blow
to the Cambridge-based farm.
Rip Van Winkle's stud career had reached new heights in the
recently completed racing season, with his star son Te Akau
Shark (NZ) winning Group 1 races on both sides of the Tasman
and Jennifer Eccles (NZ) victorious in the G1 New Zealand Oaks.
He finished a career-best sixth in the Grosvenor Award for New
Zealand's Champion Sire, with 25 winners in an abridged season,
including three stakes winners, while he also had 18 winners in
Australia.
He also served five seasons at stud with Coolmore in Ireland
producing stakes winners in Great Britain, France, Ireland, Italy,
Spain, Germany, Turkey and India and has also had winners in
Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and 18 other countries.
But while momentum was very much behind him, he had been
struck down by laminitis in the past week and had to be
euthanised on Saturday.
"It's really, really sad. He was a such a terrific racehorse and
then to have a stellar year like last year, to have the Oaks winner
and the top-rated miler in Australia in Te Akau Shark, it was a
hard thing to happen," Schick told TDN AusNZ. "He had acute
laminitis. That came on very rapidly, within five days.
Unfortunately, he lost the battle."
Schick said the triple Group 1-winning son of Galileo (Ire) had
been a model of fitness up until the past week, and his sudden
decline had hit the staff at Windsor Park very hard.
"He's been very, very straightforward and it was a bit of a
shock really. I didn=t want to take him through any more pain.
He was a terrific horse and it was just one of those things," he
said. "He was a terrific character and a high-class racehorse and
it=s hard for everyone. The staff did a great job and it=s a big loss
for them."
It continues a difficult past 12 months for the New Zealand
breeding industry, with deaths of several prominent stallions,
including Cambridge Stud trio Roaring Lion (USA), Tavistock (NZ),
Burgundy (NZ) and Waikato Stud's Sacred Falls (NZ).
From Italian Yearling to Group 1 Glory Bred by Roberto Brogi, Rip Van Winkle was purchased for
€170,000 (AU$280,000) by agent John O'Byrne at the 2007
Italian Yearling Sale at Milan for Coolmore. He won his first two
starts as a 2-year-old for Aidan O'Brien, including the G3 Tyros S.
He would run fourth in both the G1 2000 Guineas and Epsom
Derby and then second in the G1 Coral-Eclipse before breaking
through for his first Group 1 win in the Sussex S. at Goodwood.
He then returned to win the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot
later in the year. Competing against the best horses in Europe
and Great Britain, he added a further Group 1 win in the
Juddmonte International as a 4-year-old, also running a place in
a trio of other Group 1 contests.
His arrival at Windsor Park Stud in 2011 was a huge coup for
the New Zealand industry, as well as the farm, who had enjoyed
considerable success with Volksraad (GB), who hailed from the
same family. His three winners in New Zealand from just eight
runners from his first crop included the stakes-winner Magic
Dancer (NZ), who won the G3 Phoenix Park Classic. His stallion
profile continued to build in his second season with runners,
thanks to G2 Eight Carat Classic winner Capella (NZ), while the
Bob Peters-owned First Impressions (NZ) became his first
Australian stakes winner in the G3 WA Oaks.
Winners and black-type successes continued to flow but his
first genuine star emerged when Te Akau Shark hit the track in
the spring of 2017.

Ablaze Wins Grand National Hurdle
Racing to Continue in Victoria for Now
Twelve months later, the Jamie Richards-trained gelding
stamped his class with a pair of Group wins by big margins in
New Zealand and headed to Australia last spring, running
second in the G1 Epsom H. and then third in the G1 Cox Plate.
His first Group 1 success came in the BCD Group Sprint at Te
Rapa in February and he followed that up by winning the G1
Chipping Norton S. at Randwick.
Two weeks later Rip Van Winkle had his second Group 1
winner when the talented filly Jennifer Eccles, trained by Shaune
Ritchie, won the G1 NZ Oaks, having been placed in the G1 New
Zealand 1000 Guineas in November.
Rip Stamps Them with Quality For Schick, the quality of his top progeny was a tribute to the
quality of stallion.
"To be able to leave high-class gallopers like Te Akau Shark,
he's a big loss to the New Zealand industry as well as for us. He
was the second-highest-rated son of Galileo behind Frankel,
which is quite a feat," he said. "He's got some very nice horses
about at the moment and we will see more horses come out in
the next season. We will continue to follow them with interest
but it=s always a hard thing when you lose a stallion of his
status."
Windsor Park is well-placed to weather the loss of Rip Van
Winkle, with six other stallions on its roster, Shamexpress (NZ),
Turn Me Loose (NZ), Vanbrugh, Rageese, Mongolian Khan and
Charm Spirit (Ire), who was recently crowned the top
second-season sire in New Zealand.
"It's never been an easy business, but you just have to pick
yourself up and get on with it. We=ve got some really nice young
stallions," Schick said. "Mongolian Khan was such a good
racehorse and we are looking forward to seeing his horses step
out as 3-year-olds. With the likes of Turn Me Loose, Rageese and
Vanbrugh to come through, we just have to look for the
positives and keep on going."

FIGHTING MAD CAPSANOTHER BIG WEEKEND
FOR BAFFERT
Lightly raced Fighting Mad (New Year=s Day) zipped away earlyand held sway late to take Sunday evening=s GI Clement L. HirschS. at Del Mar and stamp her ticket to the GI Breeders= CupDistaff. Looking to add to another productive weekend for Hallof Fame trainer Bob Baffert that included Saturday scores in theGI Whitney S. and Shared Belief S., the Gary and Mary Westhomebred was backed down to 9-5 favoritism from a 4-1morning line quote and wasted little time seizing command.Under a tight Abel Cedillo hold, the bay doled out splits of :23.15 and :46.55 before being asked to kick away from hercompetition heading for home. Defending champion Ollie=sCandy (Candy Ride {Arg}) and MGISW Ce Ce (Elusive Quality)were scrubbed on to try and reel in the leader approaching thestretch, but Fighting Mad began to open up at the head of thelane as Ce Ce was the first to capitulate. Ollie=s Candy kept ongamely to cut things close late, but Fighting Mad found the wirewith a half-length to spare. Ce Ce held on for a distant third, while the accomplished Hard Not to Love (Hard Spun) neverreached contention and brought up the rear. AI had the same instructions today that I had yesterday [forThousand Words {Pioneerof the Nile} in the Shared Belief]--gether out of there and see if you can get to the front,@ Cedillo said. AShe really broke sharply and wanted to go right away. I got herto relax some on the backside, then she went right on with it.She=s just an amazing filly.@ Cont. p3
FAVES FAIL TO SHOW ON SATURDAY, BUT
EXCUSES ABOUNDThe Week in Review, by T.D. Thornton
This past Saturday wasn=t a great day to be a favorite in an
open stakes race at the nation=s premier race meets. Chalk
horses went a collective one-for-seven at Saratoga and Del Mar,
and the list of excuses included stutter-step starts, bumps
leaving the gate, stretch-run roughhousing, getting disqualified,
and being dueled into defeat in internal pace battles.
Tight finishes in several stakes elevated the interest level,
although the results in general did not lend clarity to the
nationwide divisional races with the GI Kentucky Derby inside
the five-week mark and the Breeders= Cup Championships now
three months out.
At the Spa, faves went zero-for-five, with the GI Personal
Ensign S. setting the tone early in the day. Cont. p5

she ran an incredible race. She was trembling and sweating and I

Fighting Mad is the sixth Grade I winner out of a Forestry mare
among a group produced by a diverse list of sires (Rushing Fall
{More Than Ready}, Nyquist {Uncle Mo}, Turbulent Descent
{Congrats}, Instilled Regard {Arch} and Bobby=s Kitten {Kitten=s

(Atticus)--was acquired by the Wests= bloodstock advisor Ben
Glass for $67,000 at the 2014 Keeneland January sale in foal to
another former Baffert pupil in The Factor. She produced an
Australian-bred 2-year-old winner by Tapit and an American
Pharoah colt down under before returning to the states to be
bred to Union Rags for 2021.

scoring in a 1 3/8 miles turf stakes at Del Mar two summers ago,
ran the race of her life at age six while attending the pace over
nine furlongs on dirt. She got first run on a tiring speedster, then
braced for the onslaught of heavy favorite Midnight Bisou

inhale the determined bay, but Vexatious dug in for a spirited
fight, shifting outward and exchanging bumps in deep stretch
before prevailing by a neck and surviving a foul claim and
inquiry.

Tom=s d=Etat (#5) stumbles at the start of the Whitney. Winner
Improbable (#2), known for his own gate antics, breaks well.
Sarah Andrew
Week in Review cont.
The win was a first Grade I triumph for both Vexatious and
trainer Jack Sisterson, who also picked up his first career win at
Saratoga in the Personal Ensign. Vexatious earned an automatic
entry to the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff Nov. 7 at Keeneland, where
Sisterson is primarily based.
In the nine-furlong GI Whitney S., the 3-1 Improbable (City
Zip), who has a history of getting hot and bothered in the
starting gate, held up the start. The Bob Baffert trainee
eventually settled down, but the delay might have contributed
to the unraveling of even-money favorite Tom=s d=Etat (Smart
Strike), who missed the break and came out four lengths behind
the field. This altered the pace complexion of the Whitney,
leaving 29-1 long shot Mr. Buff (Friend or Foe) sailing solo on
the lead through soft splits with Improbable tracking in second
and Tom=s d=Etat relegated to the back of the pack.
Improbable, on his way to a 106 Beyer Speed Figure, swatted
away Mr. Buff at will on the far turn, opening up by two lengths
in the stretch under steady urging. By My Standards
(Goldencents) picked up the pieces in second. Tom=s d=Etat
checked in third, ending his four-race winning streak, but with
an asterisk attached because of his trip woes.
The 7-1 upset by Echo Town (Speightstown) in the
seven-furlong GI H. Allen Jerkens S. Presented by Runhappy
didn=t at all seem fluky despite another favorite--the 2-1 No
Parole (Violence)--faltering. The Jerkens was a deep 11-horse
affair, and Echo Town broke with alacrity and was initially within
three lengths of a hotly contested lead. But he settled nicely at
the tail of the main flight on the inside, then edged outward for
clear passage, commencing a rally a half-mile out that quickly
picked off most of the pack.Cont. p7

Thousand Words takes them all the way in the Shared Belief as
Honor A. P. (blaze) can only manage second. | Horsephotos
Week in Review cont.
The leaders lined up four across the track at the sixteenth
pole, but Echo Town=s widest bid included a deep-stretch
resurgence that none of his peers could match, and the Steve
Asmussen trainee ended up drilling a pretty good bunch of
3-year-old sprinters by 3 1/2 lengths.
Shifting, drifting, bumping, and grinding through the final
furlong of the GII Bowling Green S. at 11 furlongs on the turf
affected five of the six starters, and the stewards placed the
blame on Sadler=s Joy (Kitten=s Joy), who was DQ=d from his
neck win and placed fourth. New York-bred Cross Border
(English Channel) was elevated to victory after crossing the wire
second. The result could portend a nice August start at the Spa
for New York-breds, as fellow state-bred Tiz the Law
(Constitution) figures to start heavily favored in this Saturday=s
GI Runhappy Travers S.
In the nightcap, 4-1 Cariba (Cairo Prince), completed the
stakes blanking of Spa faves with a half-length tally in the Caress
S. over 5 1/2 furlongs on the lawn.
Meanwhile, on the Left CoastY Honor A. P. (Honor Code) looked flat and unmotivated when
checking in second at 1-5 odds in the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar.
But even before he encountered trip trouble on the track, the
pre-race vibe signaled that this could be a Atrap@ race for the top
West Coast candidate for the Kentucky Derby.
Honor A. P., who previously performed like a
more-distance-the-better type of 3-year-old, was cutting back
half a furlong to 1 1/16 miles from his GI Runhappy Santa Anita
Derby score on June 6, and the dynamics of the four-horse
Shared Belief meant that the ridgling would have be closer to
the pace than was ideal for his running style. It didn=t help that
Cezanne (Curlin) swerved directly into him at the gate break,
and jockey Mike Smith (as he often does aboard odds-on
favorites in route races) guided Honor A. P. to the back and
outside of trouble, even though this meant giving up three paths
of real estate into the clubhouse bend.
Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile), meanwhile, broke
fluidly and settled in at the fence to be the 9-1 pacemaker.
Entering the backstretch, Honor A. P. advanced under his own
power to shadow the speed a half-length back, but Cezanne
again became a pesky presence about a half mile out when he
pushed up from between rivals to claim second, causing Honor
A. P. to lose a position while edging outward again for another
three-deep journey through the far turn.
Cezanne narrowly led off the bend, but Thousand Words
punched back under urging at the rail while Honor A. P. couldn=t
gain any traction on the outside. Honor A. P. re-engaged late to
finish second, three-quarters of a length behind Thousand
Words. But his resurgence had more to do with Cezanne
backpedaling out of the picture than it did with Honor A. P.
finding that unmatchable late gear he displayed in his Santa
Anita Derby win.
In the aftermath of the Shared Belief, Thousand Words (104
Beyer) has regained some of his early-season luster after the
Bob Baffert trainee fell off the Derby radar for a stretch
between March and June. But Honor A. P. is likely to emerge as
the more dangerous threat heading to Louisville, because
trainer John Shirreffs didn=t have him fully cranked for his final
Derby prep, and nothing about his taxing trip worked in his
favor.
Later on the card, the 19-10 Collusion Illusion (Twirling Candy)
emerged as the lone unscathed favorite on Saturday=s slate of
national stakes, rallying from out of the clouds (or out of the Del
Mar fog, to be more precise) to nail a GI Bing Crosby S.
photo-finish win by a nose after patiently watching a six-way
scramble for the lead disintegrate. The Mark Glatt trainee was
the lone 3-year-old in the six-furlong field of nine. Cont. p8

Turfway Park Update During the same earnings conference call last Thursday in
which Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI) chief executive officer Bill
Carstanjen detailed long-term plans for the gaming
corporation=s desire to rid itself of Arlington International
Racecourse, Carstanjen also provided an update to the
redevelopment of Turfway Park and its Aextension@ betting
facility a dozen miles to the northeast in Newport, Kentucky,
that will be generating purse money for the track's Dec. 2-31
holiday meet.
AWe finished demolishing the existing grandstand at Turfway
Park in the second quarter, and the racetrack itself with a new
state-of-the-art artificial racing surface called Tapeta will be
completed by the end of August,@ Carstanjen said. ADuring the
second quarter, we completed the architectural design and site
development plans. We will begin construction of the new horse
racing machine (HRM) and grandstand facility as soon as we
obtain the required permits and complete the necessary site
improvements. The updated design reflects a floor plan of
approximately 155,000 square feet and includes a simulcast
facility, a racing grandstand and event space for groups and
banquets, racehorse owner and VIP player accommodations;
44,500 square feet of gaming floor that can accommodate up to
1,200 HRMs, and three food and beverage venues, including a
sports bar designed to accommodate sports wagering in the
event it is approved in Kentucky.
ABased on the finalization of the design for the facility, total
project capital for Turfway Park is projected to be approximately
$200 million, which includes the Turfway Park acquisition costs
and other previously approved capital. This capital investment
will be completed over the next 15 to 18 months. The increase
of approximately $45 million over previously provided estimates
is primarily driven by increased site work requirements and a
larger racing and gaming facility. Cont. p9

AWith respect to our Turfway Park extension in Newport,

improvements needed to the building. We anticipate that the
additional interior construction will be completed by the end of

TRAVERS LONGSHOT FIRST LINE WILL TRY
TO KEEP MOMENTUM GOING FOR NODA
by Bill Finley
On paper, First Line (First Samurai) would appear to be in over
his head in the GI Runhappy Travers S. But his young trainer
insists he "will outrun his odds" and sees the horse starting in
the GI Kentucky Derby. Orlando Noda is not lacking confidence.
It's not hard to understand why. Training for just 16 months,
Noda, 31, is in the midst of another strong Saratoga meet. With
just six horses under his care at the start of the meet last year,
he went three for nine. This year, with 18 horses, he is off to a
four-for-13 start. The latest win came Saturday with Mystery
Bank (The Big Mystery). Making his first start for Noda after
being trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., he won a maiden special
weight on the grass and paid $18.
"We are grateful everything is working out," Noda said. "We
won for owners who have never won before in Saratoga.
Everyone is thrilled that we are performing the way we are in
Saratoga against the elite."
Still training primarily claimers, Noda has long thought that
First Line could be his breakout horse. He was trained by Brad
Cox before he made his first career start and then privately
acquired by Noda, who gallops many of his own horses.
"When I got him I knew he could run," Noda said. "I'm not a
light rider and he was putting in some good works for me. He
was immature at the beginning but so game when he came to
track. He loves to train. I hyped up the horse even before he
started in his first race. I had big plans ever since I got him. I've
been telling people he's my Derby horse."
But First Line wasn't delivering. He was a distant fourth in his
debut in January at Aqueduct and was still winless in three starts
entering the Saratoga meet. Noda was able to find a
nine-furlong maiden race on July 29 for the gelding's next start
and the result was a narrow win by a neck, good for a 90 Beyer
Speed Figure.
"He just needed distance." Noda said. "That made all the
difference."
First Line will now be coming back in 10 days for the Travers
and stepping up from a maiden to a Grade I race where the
competition will include the leading 3 year-old in training, Tiz
the Law (Constitution). Noda said the first goal is to earn enough
points to get into the field for the Derby, but he's not ruling out
a victory. He's so confident in the horse that he said had the
maiden race not filled he still would have entered First Line in
the Travers.
"I'm entering to win." he said of the Travers. "He might
surprise some people."
That Noda even has a Travers horse this early in his career is
rather remarkable.
He came up under his father, trainer Jose Noda-Fernandez,
who raced in Florida and the Mid-Atlantic. His next stop was
Ocala, where he worked for several of the top farms there,
including Hartley/DeRenzo and Crupi's New Castle before
joining the Mark Casse team. At each stop along the way, Noda
tried to learn as much as he could.
"I learned that if you put a foundation into a horse before you
work on speed that makes a horse last longer," Noda said. "A lot
of sale babies get pressed too early in their careers before they
have really matured. Then they don't make it past their
3-year-old year. Over all, everyone has their own opinions on
how to train a horse. I think less is more as a baby."
Ready to go out on his own, he joined forces with his brother
Jonathan and formed Noda Brothers LLC. For much of 2019
Noda had no outside clients. It was just he and his brother.

Noda cont. He started his first horse in March of last year and after 11 losses won his first race last June. "You have to start as a claiming trainer to get the owners tonotice you and give you those pedigree horses that are boundfor stakes races," he said. During his brief career, Noda has won with 24 of his 126starters for a wining rate of 19%. He has had only one prior startin a graded race. It's not just First Line, Noda can be ambitious when spotting hishorses and isn't afraid to run them at class levels that may seemto be a stretch. "A lot of handicappers don't pick me to win because I amalways bumping up horses instead of dropping them," Nodasaid. "It is an easier game when you can claim for $32,000 anddrop them in for $25,000. Do that and you will win a highpercentage. As long as the horse is doing good I want to test thewaters going up in class." As often happens when a new trainer gets off to a fast start,Noda is getting a lot of inquiries from owners looking to give himhorses. He said he has been having problems finding help atSaratoga and can't take on any extra horses right now, butexpects to expand his stable once he returns to Belmont. By theend of the year he expects to have about 40 horses. If he can geta big performance out of First Line in either the Travers or theDerby, that number may rise. "This horse will fight to the end," Noda said. "We have to testthe waters. You never know."
RECENT PRIVATE BUY SOUTH BEND WORKS
TOWARDS TRAVERS
South Bend (Algorithms), a recent addition to the Bill Mott
barn, turned in his final breeze Sunday over Saratoga=sOklahoma Training Track as he eyes next Saturday=s GI Runhappy Travers S. The colt was acquired privately fromSagamore Farm and trainer Stanley Hough after finishing secondin the June 27 GIII Ohio Derby by a group that includes GaryBarber, Adam Wachtel, Peter Deutsch and Leonard Schleifer ofPantofel Stable. Working outside of recent GII Suburban S.romper Tacitus (Tapit), South Bend was credited with fivefurlongs in a best-of-11 1:00.70--Tacitus was clocked in 1:01.15(2/11). "He went well He went with Tacitus and they breezed nicelyand finished up together," said Mott. "He made up a length tothe finish. We had him go out a little stronger. He's a nice horseand pretty easy to train." Tacitus is being pointed to the GI Woodward S. Sept. 5.
UNIQUE BELLA BROTHER WINS SMARTLY
ON SAPPORO DEBUT
by Alan Carasso
Vanishing Point (Tapit), a full-brother to two-time Eclipse
Award and three-time Grade I winner Unique Bella, was very
green, but very good in his racecourse debut Sunday afternoon
at Sapporo Racecourse, leading every step of the way en route
to a seven-length tally.
The mount of perennial leading jockey Christophe Lemaire, the
son of GI Breeders= Cup Ladies= Distaff heroine Unrivaled Belle
(Unbridled=s Song) jumped alertly from the widest gate in the
field of seven and was switching back and forth across his leads
while establishing the front passing under the line for the first
time. Well rated on the lead, Vanishing Point was asked for a bit
of a sprint with a little more than a quarter mile to run, opened
a clear advantage while having a look around and once again
switching his leads multiple times and crossed the line a
convincing winner. The final time for the metric mile and a
quarter on firm turf was 2:02.4.
AHe is still a big baby,@ the winning jockey commented. AHe
didn=t stretch out much and his back end is still a bit weak, but
he has great potential. Around the turn he showed fantastic
speed. I think this was the perfect distance for him.@
Vanishing Point was bred by Mandy Pope=s Whisper Hill Farm
LLC, who acquired Unrivaled Belle for $3.8 million at the 2016
Keeneland November sale carrying a full-sister to Unique Bella.
The 3-year-old filly, named Unrivaled Princess, is unraced to
date. Through the Timber Town draft, Pope sold Vanishing Point
for $1.5 million to Hiroyasu Takeuchi, agent for new owner Yuji
Hasegawa, at last year=s Keeneland September Yearling sale.
Unrivaled Belle was barren to Tapit for 2019, but foaled a full-
sister to Unique Bella and Vanishing Point Mar. 19 and returned
to the Gainesway stallion this past breeding season. Cont. p11

2YO RACING STALEMATE IN MD ENDS The Maryland Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review
Committee has approved the Maryland Racing Commission=s
emergency regulation that will facilitate Lasix-free 2-year-old
races, it was announced Sunday evening. No races for juveniles
have been held in Maryland this year due to a stalemate
between the state=s racing factions over the use of the anti-
bleeder medication. It was announced on July 16 that The
Maryland Jockey Club, The Stronach Group and the Maryland
Thoroughbred Horsemen=s Association had reached an
agreement for a Lasix-free pilot program through 2023.
While no 2-year-old races are listed in the current Laurel Park
condition book, Maryland Jockey Club President Sal Sinatra said
there would be two extra races offered for Friday, Aug. 7: a
Lasix-free 2-year-old maiden special weight and Lasix-free 2-
year-old maiden special weight for fillies, both at five furlongs.
Relatedly, the MRC Equine Safety, Health and Welfare
Advisory Committee July 31 authorized a veterinary survey
study of all 2-year-olds that race in Maryland through Dec. 31 of
2020. The objective of the study is to track the incidence of
exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in 2-year-olds racing
without Lasix using video scopes.
The emergency regulation was approved for the standard six-
month period, from July 31, 2020 through Jan. 26, 2021.
THE NEXT GENERATION WITH SHAYNA
TILLER by Katie Ritz
The TDN has partnered with Amplify Horse Racing to present
AThe Next Generation,@ an ongoing video series featuring young
people who were not born into the Thoroughbred business, but
are now excelling within the industry.
Growing up next to Laurel Park, 24-year-old Shayna Tiller
always felt a strong attraction to horse racing. But it wasn=t until
she was in college that she decided to pursue a career in the
industry.
On a whim, she applied for an internship with the Saratoga
Special. After spending one summer at the Spa, she was hooked
for life. Over the past four years, Shayna has been on a
whirlwind tour of the industryB doing everything from foaling
out mares, chasing down a story on the Saratoga backstretch,
working as an exercise rider, and interning for Fasig-Tipton.
Last year, she graduated from the Irish National Stud course.
She now works as the Director of Sales for Mill Ridge Farm, and
also shares her passion for promoting the stories of the people
behind the sport through the >Riders Up= Podcast she created
with roommate Autry Graham.
KR: How did you get involved in horse racing?
ST: I=m originally from Laurel, Maryland and I grew up 10
minutes from the racetrack there. My mom and sister are
deathly allergic to horses, ironically, so no one in my family was
really into it. But my parents are from Bowie, Maryland and my
dad always liked to go to the track and he took me with him a
couple times. I did one Pony Pal ride there, and I was sold for
life.

The Next Generation cont.
So I rode horses growing up, and I did a school project in high
school on Lasix in horse racing and I interned with some of the
state vets there at Laurel and Pimlico. I learned all about it and
was kind of hooked from that point.
When I was in college at the University of Maryland, we had to
apply for a fake internship as part of the general education
requirements. I found an ad for the Saratoga Special, and just
decided to apply. So I shipped up to Saratoga, didn=t even know
what a blacktype race was, and I was interviewing Todd Pletcher
the next day.
They put us up in a barn apartment above the McMahon=s
Farm. Ann McMahon drives a car with a license plate that says
>Funny Cide One= on it. They raised Funny Cide and he was my
favorite horse growing up. So I thought, AWell, I want to come
back and learn more.@ So I spent my winters with them, and any
break I had from college, I was there.
I transferred my last year of college to a smaller agricultural
school in Pennsylvania to get more hands-on experience. I
galloped in the mornings and interned with the Thoroughbred
Idea Foundation when it was in its beginning stages. Then I was
with Fasig-Tipton for a while before going to Ireland for the Irish
National Stud Program last year.
So I guess as a new person in the industry who knew that I
knew nothing, I wanted to get a full perspective on the industry
and I was just eating it up. I think that=s what=s so cool, is that
people in this industry really allow you to do anything you=re
interested in.
KR: What was it that drew you to this industry?
ST: I think that it=s all rooted in a love for the horse. I went to
college to be a vet, but when I was going through it, I realized I
didn=t really want to do that. When you grow up as a little horse
girl you think you=re either going to be a barn manager or maybe
manage a tack shop or be a vet. So when I found horse racing, I
just saw that you can actually go and make a career for yourself
and work in a dynamic industry, and that=s what drew me in.
Being in Saratoga, it=s the most inspiring place you can be,
really. I was around the top horses in the country and the top
trainersB the people you see on TV. I wanted more and more of
it, and it snowballed from there.
KR: What is your favorite part about this business?
ST: I really love the sales. I think what=s so cool about them is
you sell horses at different stages of life and you=re trying to find
where they=re going to peak. It=s also a bit of a matchmaking
project with each horse, so it=s really neat seeing them grow,
especially the foals to yearlings and the yearlings to 2-year-olds.
You=re trying to find the perfect match of who=s going to
purchase them and then you get to see them go on and win
races and become big bad race horses that you=ve seen since
they were babies. There=s really nothing like it.
KR: Tell us about what you do now.
ST: I=m the Director of Sales at Mill Ridge Farm. Mill Ridge was
founded by Alice Chandler in 1962, which is really special for
me, being a woman in the industry as well. She was just
inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. So it=s kind of cool to be
a female working here and carry on her legacy.
In my position, I oversee all of the sales operations, so that
consists of recruiting, seeing the horses prep and placing them
in sales, and then working in marketing to make sure they reach
the right buyers and communicating with clients to help them
succeed. I get to do a lot of different things, which is what=s so
fun. No day is the same, and obviously going to the sales is a
whole other job when I do that.
Another fun thing I do with my roommate Autry Graham is we
started a podcast called Riders Up. We=re two young girls in
racing and we like to have conversations with different people
on the podcast and talk about their lives. It=s not your
stereotypical handicapping podcast. You don=t want our picks.
We tell the stories behind the business, and it=s really fun. You
can find us on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, and we have an
Instagram that we interact with a lot too.
KR: What are your career goals?
ST: I=ve always wanted to have my own consignment, so that=s
something that I=m getting a little taste of here at Mill Ridge. I=m
hoping in the next 10-plus years, I=ll be able to do that on my
own.
KR: If you could change one thing about this industry, what
would it be?
ST: I think if I could change one thing, it would be how we
interact with the public. I come from a family that knows
nothing about horse racing, so every time we have our newest
public scandal or whatever the situation may be, I hear it from
the public=s standpoint, rather than our standpoint as an
industry. I think it=s so important for us to educate the public
and tell them what=s really going on and be more transparent,
because the more transparent you are, the less you have to
lose.
I also think we need to work to appeal to the public. My
friends all used to go to the Preakness and they wouldn=t even
watch a horse race during the day, but they all got hooked on it
from there, and it made them want to go back for more. It was
more like a sporting event for them than a serious gambling
experience. So I think we need to improve our engagement with
the public.

KR: What was it like being a total newcomer in the sport?
ST: I was definitely very intimidated when I first started in
racing. It just seems completely isolated and you don=t really
know how you=re going to break that barrier. I got into it pretty
late. I was in college when I first started, and I was around
people who have grown up in it their whole lives and knew all
these things that I didn=t even know were possible.
I=ve found though, in racing, how much people do embrace
you once you actually get into it and show you want to learn. I
have had so many great people who have helped me along the
way. It=s kind of incredible. I don=t know why they=ve done so
much for me. So I think that was the initial struggle, but now I
just feel really lucky to be a part of it, and it=s amazing how
much people help you.

record a front-running victory over Sunday maiden winner
Gretzky the Great (Nyquist) July 12. Back on the Tapeta for this
first stakes go, the bay gelding broke a half-step slowly but
recovered quickly and strode out to the early lead. He set the
tempo through fractions of :22.32 and :44.40 before streaking
clear to an authoritative victory.
AHe broke a little bit slow--he was kind of nervous today. With
lots of wind, that probably affected him a little,@ said winning
jockey Luis Contreras. AIt was so windy today. But he just broke
a little bit slow and when I asked him, he just [responded] right

of bullet drills. With the pacesetters in the early strides, he was
outfooted and settled off the pace as Good With People set
fractions of :23.28 and :46.68. The pacesetter was still well in
front inside the final furlong, but Positivity unleashed a powerful
late rally to reel in the longtime leader and win going away. The
winner then survived a claim of foul for interference with
Touchdown Brown (Cairo Prince) at the start.
It was the second year in a row a Graduation claim of foul
went the way of winning trainer Luis Mendez, whose Big

Factor This scored his fourth-straight victory while defending
his title in this event Sunday afternoon. The $62,5000 claim in
2018 has been an ATM for his connections over the past couple
seasons, and appears in the best form of his career this term--he
ran away with the GIII Fair Grounds S. Feb. 15 at 8-1, then
doubled up in the GII Muniz Memorial Classic S. Mar. 21 at 9-1
while earning a 104 Beyer Speed Figure. The public finally wised
up for the GII Wise Dan S. at Churchill June 20, and he hung on
that day by a neck at even-money. Forced to concede the lead
early on from a high draw, Factor This shared pacesetting duties
down the backside before taking over nearing the third and final
turn. He was challenged in earnest by Ry=s the Guy (Distorted
Humor) heading home, but stiff-armed that foe and denied
Hierarchy=s late bid to keep the win streak intact.
AThere was obviously another horse up there on the pace,@
trainer Brad Cox noted. AThat=s a tough post (11) to win from,
the way they angle the gate at the quarter pole. He had to
overcome some things today; laid in the two path around both
turns. But overall, I was super pleased with the horse. He always
shows up. Very happy with Shaun [Bridgmohan] and the position
he put him in. We talked it over this morning how we thought
the race would come up. Shaun had a good feeling the horse
next to us on the lead would be right there, so he was prepared
for that. He did a good job evaluating that. He really gets the
most out of this horse.@ Click for the Equibase.com chart.

Moretti added his second career stakes victory while taking
the blinkers off for Sunday=s Birdstone S. at Saratoga. Settled in
a wide third as American Tattoo (Arg) (Not For Sale {Arg})
narrowly led Expert (Point Given) through the early going of this
marathon, Moretti was prompted by Javier Castellano exiting
the backstretch and broke into a clear advantage with Rocketry
locked on his outside shoulder. Head and head with that rival
into the stretch, the favorite dispensed of that rival before
holding off his oncoming stablemate You=re to Blame by 1 1/2
lengths at the wire. Rocketry was third.
AAt one point in the race, I thought I might have made a
mistake [removing blinkers] because he seemed like he was
almost a little too relaxed," said winning trainer Todd Pletcher.
"But I know in these kinds of races you can't have a horse that's
pulling too much. The main thing is I wanted him to settle into a
good rhythm and it seemed like he was doing that. He was
always responding well when Javier asked him to maintain his
position. He finished up well."
Moretti hit the board in all previous starts this term, including
an 8 1/2-furlong Oaklawn allowance win May 2 followed by a
front-running score in a soggy renewal of the Flat Out S. over 11

Simply Ravishing | Coglianese
Lady Lilly | Chelsea Durand
Simply Ravishing was the first of three winners for first-crop
sons of Uncle Mo Sunday afternoon, with the stallion=s Derby-
winning Nyquist represented by winners at Woodbine and
Saratoga. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored
by Fasig-Tipton. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $39,600.

6th-Saratoga, $72,000, Msw, 8-2, 2yo, f, 6f, 1:11.77, ft.
LADY LILLY (f, 2, Nyquist--Miss Inclined {MSP, $184,451}, by
Pulpit) raced out to take an early lead, showing the way through
initial splits of :22.48 and :45.82. In the clear turning for home,
the $280,000 KEESEP yearling appeared to be home free, but
despite getting leg-weary in the final sixteenth, the 9-5 choice
held on for a neck victory over the oncoming Mo Dean (Uncle
Mo). The winner=s freshman sire, Nyquist, was registering his
third winner, following Gretzky the Great=s maiden special
weight win minutes earlier at Woodbine. Miss Inclined, a half
sister to dual graded stakes winning Rush Bay (Cozzene),
produced a colt by Will Take Charge last season followed by a
Liam=s Map filly this term. Sales history: $280,000 Ylg '19

7th-Del Mar, $57,000, Msw, 8-2, 2yo, f, 5f, :59.98, ft.
ROLL UP MO MONEY (f, 2, Uncle Mo--Twixy Roll {MSW,
$277,172}, by Roll Hennessy Roll) came from off the pace to
graduate in her career unveiling at Del Mar Sunday. Overlooked
at 15-1, the Jeff Mullins trainee was hustled out from her wide
berth and settled in a stalking position as first Hi Con (Nyquist)
and then Bonus Fever (Runhappy) set early fractions of :22.48
and :46.83 while favorite Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro)
lingered near the back. At the throat latch of Bonus Fever
turning into the stretch, Roll Up Mo Money bounded clear
midstretch and had enough of a cushion to score by 1 1/4
lengths over the closing Moonlight d'Oro, who found her best
stride late. Twixy Roll produced a colt by American Pharoah last
term. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $33,000. Click for the

RAINING SUNSHINE (f, 2, First Dude--Due to Shine, by West
Acre), third on debut over this track and trip July 15, was the 6-5
favorite in this second try. Settled just off a three-way battle for
the lead through an opening quarter in :22.66, the filly ranged
up four wide turning for home and seized command at the top
of the stretch before storming clear to graduate by
5 3/4 lengths. Shang=s Sister (Paynter) was second. Click for the
Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.

PRINCESS GRACE (f, 3, Karakontie {Jpn}--Masquerade {MSP,
$233,873}, by Silent Name {Jpn}), tabbed a 5-1 shot in this
unveiling despite firing a half-mile bullet in :48 3/5 (1/4) over
the Fair Hill all-weather on July 27, jumped alertly as the gates
flew. Caught three off the fence just behind the leading pair
through an opening quarter of :23.28, the dark bay glided up to
take second through a half in :48.02. Still traveling with ominous
purpose, she surged to the head of affairs at the beginning of
the lane and kicked away to win for fun while not switching over
to her correct lead. The margin back to the 1-5 chalk Good On
Paper (War Front) was 5 1/2 lengths. Out of a MSP dam who
placed in two Fair Grounds stakes, Princess Grace is
Masquerade=s first foal. She has a yearling colt named Catnip
(Kitten=s Joy) and was covered by Frosted this spring.
Masquerade is a half-sister to GIII Turnback the Alarm H.
heroine Svea Dahl (Honor Grades) and SW Vuelo Colorido
(Meadow Flight). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $24,000. Click for

PALIO (c, 2, Twirling Candy--Cat's Garden, by Tale of the Cat), a
$60,000 KEESEP yearling, was sent off the crowd=s 4-5 favorite in
this unveiling. Hustled out of the gate, the dark bay pressed
Cyclo (Midshipman) through an opening quarter in :22.16. He
forged to the lead in upper stretch and bounded home a 2 1/4-
length winner. Cat=s Garden, a half-sister to Grade I winner
Forest Secrets (Forest Wildcat), produced a colt by Cairo Prince
in 2019. In foal to Mo Town, she sold for $16,000 at last year=s
Keeneland November sale and she produced a filly by that sire
this spring before being bred back to Bernardini. The winner=s
third dam is Rokeby Rose (Tom Rolfe), who produced champion
Silverbulletday (Silver Deputy). Click for the Equibase.com chart

RED PEPPER GRILL (f, 2, Munnings--Windhoek, by Mineshaft),
sent off the 6-5 choice off a bullet three-furlong work in :35 flat
July 23, shot to the front and raced through an opening quarter
in :23.17. Given her cue straightening for home, the Virginia
bred darted clear through the stretch and was 6 3/4-lengths
clear of Nicolar (Include) at the wire. Who Knows What
(Paynter) was third.
Windhoek is responsible for a yearling colt and weanling filly
by Distorted Humor. She was bred back to Audible. Sales history:

PAPPY BOYINGTON (c, 2, Grazen--Sky Marni, by Sky Mesa), a
full to Grazen Sky, SW & GSP, $463,852; and S Y Sky, GSW,
$709,540, stalked along the inside and rallied up the fence to
defeat Champagne Pegasus (Champ Pegasus) by 2 1/2 lengths.
The winner has full-sisters foaled in 2019 and 2020 and his dam
was bred, unsurprisingly, back to Grazen for 2021. Lifetime
Record: 1-1-0-0, $21,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart.

BELAFONTE (c, 2, Tonalist--Glenwood Pines, by Mizzen Mast),
dismissed as the longest shot on the board at 49-1, was away
awkwardly and trailed the field early. The bay colt gradually
improved his position down the backstretch and darted into
contention with a four-wide move turning for home. He forged
to the lead at midstretch and drew clear to win by 2 1/2 lengths.
Loumo (Uncle Mo) closed late for second. Belafonte RNA=d for
$24,000 as an OBSWIN yearling and sold for $20,000 as an
FTKOCT yearling.
