MVA Pfaffenau facts
n Constructed 2006-2008 by city of Vienna
n Operated by Fernwärme Wienn Capacity: 250,000 t of
household wastesn 410,000 MWh district heating
Result:thermal treatment of all household wastes in Vienna possible

Fernwärme Wien – excess Energydistrict cooling
District cooling – facts:
n Summertime: too much heating energy for warm water due to new waste incineration plant and biomass plant.
n Usage of district heating energy in absorption cooling devices
n Provision of district cooling for hospitals and office buildings.
n Effective usage of waste energy (during summer) and additional power –reduction for cooling.
n Award winning concept

Fernwärme Wien - district cooling
Why district cooling?n Need for cooling of
buildings will dramatically increase the next years.-> Energy usage and costs as well as CO2 Emissions for cooling will increase.
n District cooling provides a resource, energy and cost saving way to cope with that need.
n District cooling will also be viable during winter time (-> buildings with glass surface)
n District cooling has basically the same potential as district heating

Fernwärme Wien – district coolingAbsorption chillers
n Basic concept:- heat exchanger- heating energy vaporisesa coolant in separated circle is cooled due to enthalpy of evaporation- coolant is transported in tubing in the walls of the building->- therefore no need of compression with electrical power - sweating is basically the same concept
n Central chillier plant- Spittelau: middle of Vienna- supply of cooling energy by extra tubing for nearby buildings such as main hospital Vienna and offices.- most energy efficient way -> FWW focuses on that.
n Decentralized chillier plant- for e.g. large office complexes.- FWW provides heat energy- absorption chillers are located in the buildings.

Fernwärme Wien - free cooling: other cooling sources using chillier plants
Free cooling:
n river water cooling:using river water in winter for cooling a storagea concept for the usage of Danube water is present
n Geothermical cooling/heating:concept of using geothermic sources for district heating and cooling (with central chillier plants) located in east-Vienna

Fernwärme Wien - district cooling: Environmental issues
n District cooling needs far less energy than normal chillers
n This results in large reduction of CO2 Emissions
n The energy is already there – it just needs to be used
n Combining the need of total waste incineration with sensible energy usage is the best approach for the good of our future generations
