WASTE MANAGEMENT - Youth For Seva,Hyderabad Ever given this a thought? HOW MUCH GARBAGE DOES YOUR HOUSE GENERATE? And more importantly, WHERE DOES IT GO? It is picked up in the push cart. Dumped at a common spot While waiting to be picked up by the lorry, the animals have a field day eating everything, including plastic. X-Ray showing plastics inside a Turtles body Dont we all wish this is not our contribution? The lorries pick up this waste But they dump it somewhere in the out skirts of the town. Most of what you see here will remain in the ground for the next 200 1000 years) Mountains of garbage !! Burnt routinely Sadly, the trees around too These toxic gases cause diseases like cancer, anaemia, birth defects and the like. The waste penetrates the earth and contaminates the ground water Save Planet Earth We are on the brink of disaster!!!! We are the largest threat to our environment. THE ARITHMETIC OF TRASHED WASTE 100 Homes per day 100 HOMES x 1 PLASTIC BAG = 100 PLASTIC BAGS 100 HOMES x about 80 gm of PAPER = 8KGS PAPER 100 HOMES x about 60 gm PLASTIC = 6 KGS PLASTIC 100 HOMES x 0.5 KG Vegetable waste etc. = 50 KGS WET WASTE THATS 700 PLASTIC BAGS, 56 KGS OF PAPER, 42 KGS OF PLASTIC and 350 KGS OF WET WASTE IN A WEEK!!!!!!!!! Lets not Transfer Waste, but Transform it. Setting fire to garbage dumps results in the emission of harmful gases which cause respiratory ailments and also results in Global warming. Delhi : Hottest Delhi in 50 years Orissa : Heat wave claimed 58 lives Jammu : Temp rose 3 degrees above normal Gaya : Temp rose 5 degrees above normal Nagpur : Temp 5 degrees above normal. Broke All time high record of Chandigarh : Recorded 42 degrees, 6 degrees above normal Hisar : Recorded 45 degrees, 5 degrees above normal Jaipur : Sizzling at 44 degrees, 6 degrees above normal Every cubic meter of garbage can foster about 7,50,000 flies and it becomes the breeding ground for disease bearing bacteria. Pests such as Mice, Rats, Cockroaches etc. dwell and thrive in heaps of garbage disposed irresponsibly. Rainwater running through the garbage dumps carry harmful chemicals and germs, contaminating soil and water sources. Cows die when they unsuspectingly eat polythene bags along with other food items. Careless dumping of polythene bags into the roadside drains choke the entire drainage system and results in flooding of streets and houses. Property value decreases if the area around shows evidence of poor waste management. COMPOSITION OF WASTE Most of this waste is recyclable! We can clean up our own mess. S egregate waste at source R ecycle your dry waste C ompost your wet waste Small things can make a big difference! Lets be the change we wish to see. Waste is right matter in the wrong place. The value of the dry waste is reduced if it is soiled. The value of biodegradable material is also reduced if mixed with dry waste. Reduce - It helps you differentiate between need and greed. Reuse - Before throwing away something, think about its Reuse Potential. Recycle Green Commandos Treasure from Trash Plant a Sapling; Make it a tree 1) All trash to be thrown into the dustbins only. 2) Effective usage of paper. a) Write on both sides of paper with minimal margin required. b) Use the scrap papers left in notebooks at the end of the year for rough work. c) Don't use paper to wipe your hands or faces. Carry a cloth towel. 3) Lights, fans and computers to be switched off while leaving the room. 4) Judicious use of water a) Don't keep the tap running while washing hands/ brushing teeth etc.. b) Don't use water to play. c) Use only required quantity for watering plants. 5) Plant saplings in the surroundings and take proper care and nurture them. Never pluck leaves, flowers while playing. 6) Treat animals with love and care for them. Never throw stones at stray dogs or pull their tails. 7) Avoid wastage of food. Take as much as you need and go for a second serving if needed, but do not let anything go waste. 8) Reuse items like Shoeboxes etc.. for educational projects. We can talk to teachers also to probably give more weightage to such projects. Reduce whenever possible, reuse as often as possible, recycle as much as possible. 9) Don't carry polythene covers with you to school or any other place. Use cloth bags/paper bags/jute bags instead to carry lunch boxes, exam writing pads. 10) Personal Hygiene a) Use a handkerchief while coughing/sneezing b) Wash you hands thoroughly before/after eating and after bathroom rituals.
