The recycled concrete market contin-ues to expand, as facilities are findingmore uses for the aggregate, providingan ideal solution for everything frompavement to landscaping. Rather than
trucking the usage material to locallandfills for disposal, concrete recyclingoffers an alternative that is not only en-vironmentally beneficial, but can alsodrive down the cost of constructionproducts. However, in order to derive allthe advantages possible with concreterecycling, each facility needs to have a
well run, efficient operation.A critical component to making con-
crete recycling operations both produc-tive and profitable is selecting and im-plementing the proper weighing equip-ment, particularly in a growing market. As the concrete recycling industry con-tinues to gain momentum, recyclersmust take proactive steps to ensure ac-curate billing and inventory data to re-main competitive. Whether the goal isto optimize profits, maximize productiv-ity or to streamline data management, implementing the ideal scale equip-ment is essential for improving billingaccuracy and the overall bottom line in
recycling applications.Weighing system components for
recycling applicationsTruck Scales: As one of the most versa-
tile weighing solutions for recycling appli-cations, truck scales lead the list. Sinceone of the most critical elements to main-taining an efficient recycling operation isaccurate inventory records, truck scalesplay an integral role in this process bycapturing initial weights as trucks enterand leave recycling facilities.

concrete deck-load celltechnology and a digitalweight indicator torecord, display and, attimes, communicatedata from scale transac-tions. The load cell con-verts force measure-ments into an electricalsignal read by a con-nected weight indicationsystem. The unique de-sign of some load cellsallow it to act like a can-tilever, suspended onone end and fixed on an-other, thereby eliminat-ing common errors asso-ciated with end loading, side loading, vibrationand torsion effects forenhanced accuracy andreliability.
For a basic in and outtruck scale system, adriver simply stops thevehicle on the scale so theincoming weight can becaptured, then exits thescale to be loaded or un-loaded and finally returnsto the scale to acquire anoutgoing weighment. Thesystem enables site man-agers to carefully monitorand document importantmaterial type, origin andweight data for incomingand outgoing loads. Withthese record keeping ca-pabilities, users can im-prove facility inventoryand billing accuracy.
For additional processefficiency and cost reduc-tion, operators can auto-mate material collectionand weighing by incorpo-rating an indicator into acontrol console adjacentto the scale platform. Inthis arrangement, a driversimply stops on the scaleand is prompted by theindicator to enter relevantdata for the transaction, such as truck number, load contents and compa-ny ID. The vehicle thenexits the scale to beloaded or unloaded. After-ward, the vehicle returnsto the scale so that anoutgoing weighment maybe acquired. The systemthen prints a ticket dis-playing the weight anddriver/truckload data, and all collected informa-tion is stored in the indi-cator’s memory or, insome cases, wirelesslytransmitted to the recy-cling center’s main com-puter database — a sig-nificant advantage in re-mote applications.
IndicatorsThe brains of any scale
system, today’s indicatorsare much more than a
simple display. Capable ofcollecting, displaying andtransferring complex data, indicators act as a centralhub for the weighing sys-tem. They enhance exist-ing inventory manage-ment systems or creatinga customized process forspecific data managementneeds. Now, not only areindicators designed toprovide fast, precise, re-peatable measurementsfor both static and in-mo-
tion weighing, but theyalso integrate with compa-ny equipment and sys-tems to improve accuracyand documentation.
Indicators enable recy-cling centers to choosefrom simplistic or full fea-tured options to meet ap-plication requirements. This allows companies touse only the performancecapabilities necessary to
Concrete recycling offers an alternative to landfills that is not only environmen-tally beneficial, but can also drive down the cost of construction products.

achieve the exact level of sophisticationrequired for their weighing and invento-ry management needs. Indicators aredesigned to adapt to new recyclingprocesses or meet more stringent re-quirements as the industry grows. Fur-ther, configurable to meet industry spe-cific standards and protocols, such asEthernet or Fieldbus, indicators providequick, seamless integration with exist-ing networking systems, enabling flexi-ble data transmissions.
For enhanced efficiency, Wi-Fi en-abled indicators provide remote opera-tion. They collect weight and diagnosticinformation and immediately communi-cate it to the facility’s computers. Indi-cators quickly input product identifica-tion information, allowing users to trackmaterials from the moment they enterthe facility. This enables real time sta-tus updates to ensure the most currentinventory data.
Additionally, for maximum trans-parency, recycling plants can link theindicator to the facility’s inventory sys-tem. This allows users to verify thatcurrent inventory levels can supporttheir customer’s order. Also, once theaggregate is loaded and weighed, thisamount can be subtracted from inven-tory immediately updating records inreal time. These advantages ensureconcrete recyclers not only remaincompliant with legal for trade require-ments, but also improve inventory
records — all by tracking aggregateproduction from start to finish.
The system in actionHighland Recycling: Highland Recy-
cling is a facility that collects waste ma-terial to processes it to sell the resultingrecycled materials. The dramatic in-crease in the demand for recycled ag-gregate presented an opportunity to as-sist this growing market. By offeringthis service, Highland provided costsavings and environmental benefits, avoiding landfills and reducing relianceon primary aggregates. Constructioncompanies in the area could save up to$30 per ton in disposal costs, as High-land Recycling’s $15 collection fee issignificantly lower than traditionalhaulage and landfill tax charges for ag-gregate disposal — which typicallyreach up to $45.
Highland understood that in order tokeep up with this demand, the entireoperation hinged on their ability tostreamline the collection process anddata management. The company need-ed to capture information on the weightof the waste aggregate, the specific ma-terials, customer information and theweight of the recycled material pro-duced. Maintaining accurate recordswas crucial to Highland, not only forcustomer satisfaction, but they also hadto provide accurate quarterly returns tothe Scottish Environmental ProtectionAgency (SEPA).
Highland turned to Avery Weigh-Tron-ix to design and install a truck scale sys-tem to weigh incoming and outgoing ma-terials and store information on the in-dicator. The system allowed them to notonly collect data but also to analyzeprocess efficiency. Highland Recyclingcan then print an invoice with the truckscale ticket and can store the informa-tion for accurate and efficient invoicingat the end of the month. The collectionand reporting of precise weight data en-abled the company to established suc-cessful and profitable aggregate recy-cling business in its own right.
Polk County Recycling CenterPolk County’s Recycling Center han-
dles roughly 3,500 to 4,000 tons ofoutgoing materials annually. Original-ly, the company was calculating theweight of loads based on averageweighments secured periodically froman off-site truck scale. This method ofcomputing weights was, at best, an un-reliable estimation. The companyneeded a more accurate and efficientway to track their materials.
To meet both these needs simultane-ously, Polk County implemented an Av-ery Weigh-Tronix truck scale and Model1310 unattended scale console. This of-fered a convenient solution that alloweddrivers to enter any and all necessaryweight and load information into theconsole from their vehicle with push-button ease. By enabling drivers to en-tering the information themselves, cap-turing weights was fast and simple, sav-ing time for both the recycling facilityand the operator.
The unattended console featured anindicator configured to meet industryspecific standards and protocols fordata storage and transmission. Polkwas able to collect information regard-ing the truck number, incoming andoutgoing materials, the customer andmore, enabling the facility to keep accu-rate and complete records, without theexcess labor expenses of an attendant.Plus, the indicator is able to store nu-merous transactions, so if they experi-ence computer or RF problems, the datais secure until the system is up andrunning again. Unless you like losingmoney, you need a belt
cleaner.Belt cleaners keep ma-
terial from building up onbelts which, if not done, will cause the belt totrack off center.
What happens then?Well, if the belts
tracks far enough offcenter, the rubber skirt-ing does not contain ma-
terial any longer androck, stone, dirt or otherdebris will fall off theconveyor and make itsway into the tail pulleys.
This causes:• Belts to track even
further off center, whichcan make the edge of thebelting rub on roller sup-ports or the frame of theconveyor;
• The belt to start wear-
ing the edge and will startto tear at the belt splice;
• A worn splice to makethe belt start to loosen andyour belt to become looseon one side. That willmake belt adjustment verydifficult. It also lessens thelife of your belt;
• Large rocks to get intothe tail pulley and puncha hole into the conveyoror in the belt splice; and
• Material to build uparound bearings, caus-ing failure.
In any of those exam-ples, time and moneyare lost. Along with allthose possibilities, if ma-terial builds on the sur-face of conveyor belting, the belt will track offcenter and start causingproblems as well.
So, with all these po-
tential issues, owningand maintaining a beltcleaner will save you timeand money.
Most belt cleaners aremade of rubber and pressagainst the belt as itpasses by, scraping ma-terial from the belt. Oth-ers are made of plastic oreven steel. Some have au-tomatic adjustment whileothers need some weeklymaintenance. This is eas-ily done.
Applications where ascraper cannot be usedare chevron belts or beltswith cleats. Because of theraised rubber on thesebelts, a scraper is not theaccessory of choice. Inthese cases, a brush typecleaner works best. By ad-justing the brushes sothat the bristles are justtouching the belt, this lit-erally sweeps material
from the belts. One note ofconcern with the brushesis that these do not workwell in wet sticky materi-als. Frequently, the bris-tles fill with material andplug up.
Recently, I saw an ad-vertisement for a self-powered brush cleaner. This brush cleaner waspowered by a 1 or 2horsepower motor whichturns the brush oppositethe direction of the con-veyor. This seems to methat less pressure wouldneed to be used whichwould extend the wearlife. Check it out here atwww.martin-eng.com
Take the time for a littlemaintenance and saveyourself some money.

Sunshine Recycling of Orangeburg, South Carolinadelivers a full spectrum of integrated metal, concreteand asphalt recovery and recycling services, bothonsite and mobile, all while maintaining the highestenvironmental standards.
Owned and managed since 1996 by the husbandand wife team of Joe and Lena Rich, SunshineRecycling strives to bring innovation to the recyclingindustry. In the process, they have become one of themost successful processing and recycling facilities inthe southeast. The Rich’s other divisions includeSunshine Aggregate, Sunshine Steel and SunshineAuto Salvage.
“I attribute Sunshine Recycling’s success to thededication of our staff,” Rich emphasizes. “We arecommitted to providing quality as a supplier to themills and customers we do business with.”
“When I started Sunshine, I went to the mills andhad them teach me what products they wanted, whatspecs they needed, and how they wanted it pack-aged,” he explains. “I then educated our staff as to
what the mills wanted to buy from us. This helpedcreate a great relationship with the mills, whichcontinues to this day.”
Rich continues, “In addition, we have a great rela-tionship with Terex, more specifically Dick Mizzell, southeast regional manager for Company Wrench, our Terex dealership. The commitment to service andexcellence that Company Wrench and Terex exempli-fy mirrors our own. These great companies treat usmore like a business partner than a customer. Ibelieve this has significantly contributed to our suc-cess.”
Sunshine’s site maintenance demolitionservices
Sunshine Recycling provides a complete range ofoff site demolition and dismantling services. Crewsrecently demolished an apartment complex near theirfacility. All the materials were recycled at the jobsite, including 31,000 metric tons of concrete.
There, they used a variety of equipment includingtheir 35 ton, Terex off road dump trucks and Terex
Fuchs MHL 360D, Terex Fuchs MHL 360D hybridand Terex Fuchs MLH 340D material handlers. Withan operating weight of up to 63,934-pounds, anengine power of 128 hp and a reach to stick tip of13.7 meters, the Terex MHL340 allows for efficientprocessing of scrap metal and construction anddemolition material.
According to Rich, a valuable feature of the 340D’shigh rise, hydraulic lift cab is that it allows theoperator a high vantage point with an excellent viewof the jaw crusher. “When an operator sees a jamabout to occur in the jaw, he can reach down with thegrapple and grab the piece out of the crusher beforethe jam occurs. He can then spin the piece with arotating grapple to a dimension that will go throughthe jaw without causing a jam. The operator can alsouse the grapple to grab a 6 to 7-foot metal pick; likea giant toothpick; and clear a possible jam before itoccurs. What is more important, neither of theseprocesses damage the concrete crusher nor requirethe machine to be stopped and restarted. That cantake 20 to 30 minutes.”
Another of Sunshine’s recent demolition projectswas at the Stone Forest Industries project inOrangeburg, South Carolina. That took place during2011and 2012. After the landmark saw mill wasdecommissioned, the owners sold component partsoff at auction. Following the auction, Sunshine wentin and completed the demolition of all the structuresat the 20 acre site.
Rich said, “We removed, processed and recycledmultiple structures made of block, wood and steel atthe site. In addition, about 80 percent of the site waspaved with 6-inches or more of concrete. We removedand recycled all of that, along with other concreteformations including a 25-foot x 25-foot x 10-footthick concrete slab that stood underneath a logcrane.” (This job can be viewed on YouTube atSunshine Recycling’s channel.)
Sunshine’s commitment to the environmentSunshine Recycling is located on a 50 acre site
paved with 8-inches of concrete that was crushed, processed and recycled at Sunshine using Terexequipment. Rich noted that the job was made mucheasier with the use of their Terex Fuchs MHL 360Dmaterial handler, the Terex Power Screen MetroTracand the Powerscreen® Chieftain 1400, which has arecycling capacity to process up to 220 tons per hour.

It has eleven oil-waterseparators onsite.
Sunshine’s processing centerWhen scrap metal arrives at the Sunshine
Recycling processing center, trucks are weighed on astate certified Toledo digital scale. Drivers thencontinue from station to station to unload their mate-rials. In most cases, an operator unloads the auto-mobiles, scrap material, industrial waste, etc. with aTerex Fuchs MHL 360D material handler. Then, theempty truck is weighed as it leaves and the customeris paid according to the American Metal Marketsmonthly report. Meanwhile the scrap material isprocessed, graded and prepared for shipping.
Sunshine Auto Salvage Approximately 30 acres of Sunshine’s facility is
home to their auto parts recycling business. “Our sitehas an import and a domestic division that containsapproximately 3600 cars. Both yards are “You PullIt,” explained Rich. “The customers enter the yard, they pick and pull the auto parts that they need, andthen they check out. It is cost effective for both thecustomer and our business.”
Sunshine’s non-ferrous drive through ware-house
Sunshine’s 15,000-square-foot non-ferrous materi-als, drive through warehouse, is the only one of itskind in South Carolina. The warehouse accommo-dates two lanes of traffic, relying upon six ThermanToledo digital platform scales to weigh the customer’svehicles.
“The customer drives into the warehouse, unloadstheir non-ferrous metals, which is weighed anddocumented, then the customer gets paid. The alu-minum, copper, brass, stainless steel and all otherprecious metals are processed, bailed and preparedfor shipment to consumers of non-ferrous products, all within the walls of the warehouse,” Rich said.

HUNTERTOWN, IN —Asphalt Drum Mixers,Inc., offers four models ofportable and stationaryrecycle systems to en-hance the cost efficiencyof asphalt plants. Recyclesystems allow plants touse milled material in hotmix asphalt (HMA). Sincerecycled asphalt pave-ment (RAP) is muchcheaper than virgin ag-gregate, the result is aless expensive finishedproduct that maintainsthe high quality of a purevirgin aggregate mix.
ADM’s recycle bins fea-ture a 15 ton capacityand are continuouslywelded at the seams. Thebins contain angle ironsand midsection stiffenersfor reinforcement, andtheir steeply sloped side-walls prevent materialfrom plugging or bridg-ing. A tapered dischargeopening leads to the di-rect drive belt feeder witha 5 hp motor, multi-plybelt, self-cleaning tailpulley and adjustableskirt boards.
To transfer RAP fromthe bin, the recycle sys-tem includes a heavyduty weigh conveyor thatfeatures a channel frameand wind shroud protec-tion for accurate weigh-ing. The conveyor is 2-feet wide and, dependingon the model, between 45and 65-feet long. It intro-duces RAP to the driedaggregate mix after theheating process. Basedon conditions and type ofplant, up to 50 percent ofthe HMA can contain re-cycled pavement.
Portable units featurea heavy duty I-beamframe on a goosenecktrailer with a fifth wheelkingpin hitch, singleaxle and air brakes. Thetrailer includes hingedsupport legs and a hy-draulically controlled in-cline conveyor.
An optional lumpbreaker is available forADM’s recycling systemsto break down largepieces of RAP into a use-able size. It features anadjustable steel breakerplate and replaceabletungsten tipped teeth, and is powered by a 30
hp, high efficiency motorwith an open mesh cov-ered V-belt drive. Singleand double deck scalp-ing screens are alsoavailable to ensure over-sized material does notenter the aggregate mix.Other options includeair cannons, grizzlies,
bin extensions, ad-justable legs with sandshoes and a skid withbolt-on support legs.
A family owned com-pany since 1974, As-phalt Drum Mixers, Inc.offers asphalt plants,auxiliary equipment,parts and service. For

Neponset, IL — A newpowered brush cleaner forconveyor belt applicationshas been introduced byMartin Engineering, a ro-tating design that removesmaterial accumulationand dust in difficult appli-cations. Well suited tobelts that use raised ele-ments (cleats, chevrons, ribs or lugs) to assist incarrying material, theMartin® Brush Cleaner isan economical solutionthat provides high per-formance, energy efficient
operation, even in condi-tions involving sticky ma-terials or stringy fibers, such as coal and biomass.
The economical230/460 volt, threephase electric motor pro-vides successful cleaningwith minimal power con-sumption. A 1 hp motorpowers the units for 18-42-inch belts, and a 2 hpmotor drives the cleanersfor 48-96-inch belts. Themotor can be operated ineither direction, and theunit can be installed on
the left or right side of thecleaner, depending on theplant's requirements.Constructed of durablesteel and stainless steelcomponents, the cost ef-fective belt cleaner deliv-ers a long service life, holding up even in theharshest operating envi-ronments. The innovativedesign allows easy instal-lation and maintenance.
Two bristle pattern op-tions are available to ac-commodate materialswith a range of moisture
contents. For both mod-els, standard polypropy-lene bristles offer an oper-ating temperature rangeof -20 to 180 degreesFarenheit, and optionalbristles are available forhigher temperatures.
The Martin SpiralBrush Belt Cleaner con-tains bristles that arewrapped in a spiral pat-tern, effectively cleaningdry materials that cancling and cause buildupon the shaft of conven-tional brush cleaners.
The standard .038-inchdiameter bristles are 4-inches long. Developedfor belts carrying dusty orcrumbled materials thatreadily release from bris-tles, the spiral design isalso available in low pro-file versions and widerconstructions for espe-cially challenging appli-cations.
For soft or moist mate-rials that tend to cling tobristles and brushshafts, the Martin StripBrush Belt Cleaner is a10-inch diameter unitthat employs a series ofbrush strips on shaft-mounted hubs. The stripdesign allows material tofall from the brush, where it can be collectedand returned to the ma-terial flow, rather thansettling into the bottomof the bristles. Bristlesare .040-inches in diam-eter and 3-inches long.
Martin Engineering'sConveyor Belt BrushCleaners are designed foruse in the secondarycleaning position, withrecommended placementat the point where thebelt leaves the dischargepulley. The cleaners mayalso be mounted furtheralong the conveyor's re-turn run, where they can
be supported by an idleror pulley. Installation of aprimary on the face of thedischarge pulley belowthe material stream is al-ways recommended.Product availability mayvary by region.
Founded in 1944, Mar-tin Engineering is theworld leader in makingbulk materials handlingcleaner, safer and moreproductive. KEWANEE, IL — BOMAG’s 79-inchrotor width asphalt recycler/soil stabi-lizers feature improvements to key drivetrain components. Both the MPH362-2and MPH364-2 are powered with a six
cylinder, 360 hp Cummins QSM11 wa-ter cooled diesel engine.
Other features include the use of adouble reduction planetary rear drivesystem, which is propelled by a pair of
axial piston, variable displacement mo-tors. The drive system on previous mod-els used a ring and pinion differentialassembly. The new hydrostatic systemdemands less horsepower than ring andpinion systems, which results in im-proved fuel economy. Additionally, over-all cost of ownership is reduced due tofewer wear parts to maintain and repair.Upgrades to control systems andchanges to electronics have also beenimplemented.
The MPH362-2 is a rear wheel drivemachine, while the MPH364-2 boastsfour wheel drive to enhance perform-ance on severe grades or in difficulttraction conditions. An Automatic Pow-
er Adjustment System (APA) automati-cally adjusts forward travel speeds tomatch the application and material be-ing processed.
Both models are available with one ofthree rotor configurations:
• An asphalt recycler rotor designedto cut, pulverize and mix old and deteri-orated asphalt pavement for reuse asroad base material. The pulverized ma-terial may be mixed with a bindingagent or additional granular materialfor improved road base performance.Maximum cutting depth is 12-inches;
• A soil stabilizer rotor designed to

plications that requireworking at greater
depths, a deep mix stabi-lizer is available with amaximum rotor cuttingdepth of 21-inches.
Each rotor — recyclingor stabilizing — is 79-inches wide and offers ro-tor speeds of 135 and 150revolutions per minute. The recycler rotor fea-tures 168 bullet shapedcutting teeth, while thestabilizer rotor offers 70paddle shaped teeth. Theteeth are strategically po-sitioned for uniform ma-terial pulverizing, sizingand mixing with mini-mum vibration and shockload to the rotor anddrive components. A sim-ple cutting tooth replace-ment process has an easytap in/tap out design.
A unique hydrostaticrelief system regulatesshock absorption andeliminates the need forshear pins and othertorque limiting devices inthe rotor drive. This sys-tem reduces the possibil-ity of damage to theequipment, minimizingdowntime.

For Bobby Gigliotti and his Pittsburgh Demolition,Inc. crew working at the McCandless Crossing retaildevelopment in McCandless, PA, the transformationof the former LaRoche College dormitory complex intothe site of a future CineMark 12 screen, all digitalTheater Complex and parking area, is just anotherday on the job. With the future development of thissuburban Pittsburgh, retail complex that will include53 residential units, several national chain retail andeating establishments, a Doodle Bugs! Children’sCenter, a Lowes and a 119 room Home2 Suites Hotelby Hilton, the 130 acre accumulative project isscheduled to be completed in four stages with theCineMark Theater planned for opening in late 2013.
“We are making good progress,” said Gigliotti, company vice president and project manager andexcavator operator, during a site visit in fall 2012. “Aswe take down the structures, we sort out the bricksand concrete and the steel. We recycle the scrap steeland it goes out via Jeffery S. Bronowicz trucking.
General C&D material goes to Ohio via Iron CityTrucking, and we crush the brick and concrete intoaggregate as site prep fill.”
As we arrived on site, the crew was lifting a skidsteer loader to the second floor level to make movingmaterial from within the building, easier. The remain-der of a two story dormitory unit and a side buildingwere in the final stages of being torn down, with athird building already demolished. Within a few days, the rest of the site would be razed and the backfillingcould begin.
According to Chuck DeNinno, president andfounder of Pittsburgh Demolition, Inc., the recyclableconcrete and brick material will be crushed with aKohlberg-Pioneer 2640 jaw crusher. “We like usingthe portable 2640 because it has plenty of power todo the job,” he said. “We have the ability to take longpieces of concrete and feed them into the jaw, and itjust keeps crushing without hesitation.”
DeNinno said that he has been in the C&D busi-ness for 27 years. “I was employed as a civil engineerby Allegheny County,” he told WHEN. “I had beenresponsible for letting contracts on C&D work and asI watched others and how they were progressing inthat industry, I saw the need for a company that usedmore modern technologies to do demolition moreefficiently. I knew I could do a better job. So in May1986, I started out doing demolition jobs with rentedequipment and have never looked back!”
“We work with union crews out of the local hallsand we have enough equipment that we can be work-ing three projects at the same time,” he said. “Sincewe first began we have done some major projects inthe Pittsburgh area including two power plants thatwe took down in 2009. We recently had three projectsgoing on, the McCandless Crossing project, one inBlairsville, PA and a third one in Upper St. Clair, theformer Consol Energy Headquarters Building, a fourstory office building, with each floor covering asmuch area as one and three quarters football fields. That building is down and we are currently crushingthere.”
Chuck recalled one of the most memorable andchallenging projects was the recent completion of aproject on Brunot Island, an island that is home to aReliant Energy electrical power plant. The island, located in the Ohio River, on the western side of
Pittsburgh, just west of the confluence of theAllegheny, Monongahela Rivers is only accessible viafootbridge and has no road access for car or trucktravel. Since all of the materials and equipment thatneeded to move to and from the island would need tobe transported by barge, the overall project wasdaunting.
“We were hired to take down five, 1.5 million gallonfuel storage tanks on Brunot Island,” he said. “Thetanks were no longer needed to store fuel for theexisting power plants, since they have been convert-ed to gas fired units. They wanted to remove thetanks to make room for more substation equipment
Pittsburgh 27
There isn't much left to take down. This razed building will eventually be replaced with a CineMark 12 Screen Movie Theater complex.

Pittsburgh from 22and for environmental reasons as well. We beganworking on that project in November 2011, and usinga CAT 340B Shear mounted on a CAT 345BL excava-tor, we were able to finish the job by February 2012.The mild winter last year was a big help, but the jobwent smoothly and we were finished very quickly.”
For more information on Pittsburgh Demolition,Inc., contact them at 412-828-7528 or 412-798-0717.
Bobby Gigliotti likes to use the grapple in a careful way, as he attempts to sort the debris as he removes it from thestructure.
When the CAT 345B L excavator isn't being used with agrapple attachment, it goes back to scooping up debris
with this new bucket.
The crew lifts a skid steer loader into place where it will be used to safely collect and remove material from inside thebuilding.
James Pounds works to temporarily remove the Grappleso that the excavator can be used for another operation.
Inside the larger of two buildings that are currently beingdemolished, we can see how the interior is being system-
atically removed and recycled by material type.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — The Hydraulic In-stitute (HI) has published ANSI/HI9.6.1-2012 Rotodynamic Pumps Guide-line for NPSH Margin. The new guide-line serves as a replacement for the1998 edition, which was later with-drawn completely in 2003.
This guideline covers rotodynamic, general purpose pumps with powerlevels as high as 5300 hp and impellertip speeds less than 130-feet-per-sec-ond and describes the benefits topump longevity of maintaining suit-able NPSH Margin. Pump users shouldbe aware that “the full publishedpump head will not be achieved whenthe NPSH Available equals the NPSH3of the pump. If the NPSH Availablematches the NPSH3, the first stagehead will be three percent less thanthe fully developed value. Today’shigher speed, higher energy densitypumps might not achieve acceptableservice life under suction conditionswithout an adequate NPSH Margin.
This document serves as a tutorial onthe subject of NPSH as well as providingguidance for determining NPSH Margin. The following considerations are dis-cussed relative to the sensitivity of apump to NPSH related problems:
• Impeller inlet tip speed; • Larger vs. smaller impeller eye di-
ameter;• Suction specific speed;
• Characteristics of the pumpage;• Operating range of the pump and
proximity to POR and AOR;• Materials of construction and cavi-
tation resistance;• Impeller vane overlap;• Pump size and relationship of size to
cavitation damage;• Duty cycle — time of operation un-
der cavitating condition; and• Reduction of NPSHA with timeThis excellent NPSH reference helps

PEORIA, IL — Caterpil-lar Inc. (NYSE: CAT) un-veiled the first model inits new line of hybrid ex-cavators, the Cat® 336EH, at its Mossville Indus-trial Design Center at aspecial trade press event,“The Next Generation isHere.” The new 336E Hwill be sold and servicedexclusively through theglobal Cat dealer networkfollowing the machine’sofficial launch at bauma2013 in Munich, Ger-many. The order boardfor the Cat 336E H opensin Feb. 2013, with factoryshipments beginning inMarch 2013.
The Cat 336E H usesa new hydraulic hybridtechnology developed byCaterpillar. “A hybrid isindependent of any par-ticular technology — itdoesn’t have to be elec-tric,” said Ken Gray, global product managerfor large hydraulic exca-vators for Caterpillar’sExcavation Division.“There are many waysto store and reuse ener-gy, including ourpatented hydraulic hy-brid system featured onthe Cat 336E H.”
“Caterpillar has devel-oped, built and testedelectric hybrid excava-tors, but until now wehad not found a hybridapproach that would ac-tually lower our cus-tomers’ owning and oper-ating costs,” Gray said.“Large excavators operatein high production appli-cations in which fuel is avery significant operatingcost for our customers. So, the 336E H, the hy-brid version of our work-horse 336E, is ideal forintroducing our new hy-draulic hybrid technolo-gy, with its more than300 filed patents.”
“We can’t wait to seethe reaction of our cus-tomers to the 336E H,”said Gray. “We’re confi-dent they will be delight-ed. No other commercial-ly available technology
has higher power densitythan hydraulics, andthat’s why we selected ahydraulic solution to helpour customers achievesubstantial fuel savings. The 336E H also meetsstringent Tier 4 Inter-im/Stage IIIB emissionstandards. It is extraordi-narily quiet, too. So it’s asocially responsible ma-chine for our customersto own, and they will sac-rifice nothing in terms ofperformance, power, force, speed or produc-tion. Once more, the own-ing and operating costsfor the 336E H are actu-ally lower than the stan-dard machine. That’s thevalue customers expectfrom Cat excavators.”
“The 336E H is a gamechanger — the most revo-lutionary excavator tocome to market indecades,” said GaryStampanato, vice presi-dent of Caterpillar’s Ex-cavation Division. “Cus-tomers aren’t going tochoose the 336E H sim-ply because it is sustain-able. They will select itbecause it actually lowerstheir owning and operat-ing costs, and maintainsthe performance of ourindustry leader, the336E. Caterpillar has themost productive and fuelefficient excavator prod-uct line in the industry, and our customers aresupported by the bestdealers in the world. The336E H extends our lead-ership, is the right thingto do for our customersand is a sign of greatthings to come.”
Technology“Caterpillar’s corporate
technology strategy cen-ters on research and de-velopment in advancingtechnology to meet cus-tomers’ needs today, which is what the 336E Hdoes,” said Tana Utley,Caterpillar’s chief tech-nology officer and vicepresident of the ProductDevelopment and GlobalTechnology Division.
“We’re also continuouslyworking on innovationsthat we anticipate willmeet their future needs. That’s why we’re continu-ing our research and de-velopment in electric hy-brid technology too, which actually began ourhybrid development pathseveral years ago.”
“Caterpillar has an ex-traordinary team of peo-ple working on hybridtechnology solutions forthe next generation of Cathydraulic excavators,”added Gray. “They arefrom every corner of theworld, are among the verybest and brightest minds, and they are listeningvery closely to our cus-tomers. It’s exciting forme to see their enthusi-asm for this project andthe quality product theyhave developed in the336E H, and we’re justgetting started.”
“I am absolutely confi-dent our engineers willcontinue to discover anddevelop the best hybridapproaches for Caterpil-lar’s extensive line ofequipment and applica-tions, whether that’ssome form of hydraulic orelectric hybrid system orsomething as of yet un-known,” Utley added. “AtCaterpillar, we don’t sim-ply engage in creatingnew technologies like thehydraulic hybrid systemjust for technology’s sake,or simply to prove that wecan. Our technologystrategy’s focus never los-es sight of what our re-search and developmentefforts can mean to ourcustomers’ success todayand in the future.”
Since the introductionof the 300 Series in 1994,the family of excavatorshas become the industrystandard in a large vari-ety of general, quarry andheavy construction appli-cations. Caterpillar intro-duced the standard 336Ein 2010 as a direct re-placement for the 336D.The 336E was introducedprimarily to meet Tier 4Interim/Stage IIIB emis-sions standards, and likeany new Cat machine, the 336E includes severalenhancements over itspredecessor, includingmore horsepower withgreater fuel efficiency, more lift capability, high-er digging force and auto-matic aftertreatment re-generation.
The 336E H has all ofthe same powerful advan-tages of the 336E withthe biggest difference be-tween the two models be-ing even greater fuel effi-ciency. To achieve addedfuel savings, the design ofthe 336E H uses threebuilding block technolo-gies that:
1. Conserve fuel withengine power manage-ment via the Cat Elec-tronic Standardized Pro-grammable (ESP) pump,which smoothly transi-tions between the hy-draulic hybrid powersources, engine and ac-cumulator;
2. Optimize perform-ance using restrictionmanagement via thepatented Cat AdaptiveControl System (ACS)valve, which intelligentlymanages restrictions andflows to seamlessly con-trol machine motion withno loss of power, and toensure operators experi-ence no difference in con-trol, hydraulic power orlift capability; and
3. Reuse energy viathe hydraulic hybridswing system, whichcaptures the excavator’supper structure swingbrake energy in accu-mulators, and then re-leases the energy duringswing acceleration.
Fuel savingsThe 336E H delivers in-
dustry leading productiv-ity with up to 50 percentgreater fuel efficiency, which is measured intons per liter, over the336D. Customers can ex-pect the 336E H to useup to 25 percent less fuelcompared to a standard336E, and up to 33 per-cent less fuel than the330/336D. All three ofthe technology buildingblocks, Conserve, Opti-mize and Reuse, are inte-grated together to maxi-mize fuel savings in a va-riety of applications. Evenin low intensity swing ap-plications, customers willstill experience signifi-cant fuel savings becauseof the Conserve and Opti-mize technologies. (Addi-tional factors, such asoperator skill and jobsiteconditions, also affectfuel savings.)
Return on hybridinvestment
Because the 336E Hburns less fuel and re-duces regulated engineemissions, owning and
operating costs will bedramatically lower com-pared to the standardmachine, and its carbonfootprint will be smaller,as well. Precisely whencustomers will recouptheir initial investment ina 336E H depends on fuelprices and their applica-tions. Assuming today’sfuel prices and a highproduction applicationfor a 336E H, Caterpillarestimates customers canrealistically expect to seea return on their invest-ment for the hybrid exca-vator model in as little asone year.
Durable and reliableCaterpillar designed the
336E H to deliver thesame durability and relia-bility customers expect ofall Cat machines, includ-ing large excavators likethe standard 336E. Thedesign of the 336E H usesCat hydraulic componentswith a long track record ofproven durability and reli-ability for maximum up-time and productivity. Also like a standard ma-chine, 336E H compo-nents can be replaced orrebuilt to maximize thehybrid’s service life.
ValidationCustomers have been
using field follow ma-chines, which are firstproduction machinesbuilt for customer accept-ance testing, to validatefuel burn, controllability, reliability and perform-ance of the 336E H. In aformal production studycompleted in August2012, results were im-pressive, includinggreater fuel efficiency andlower cab and spectatornoise levels than the336E and 336D. Addi-tionally, the ACS valve, which intelligently man-ages restrictions andflows to seamlessly con-trol machine motion, hasbeen in the field since2008 with superior per-formance and reliability. The ACS and hybrid sys-tem have also proven towork well together tomaximize performanceand controllability ofwork tools, includinghammers, shears andgrapples.
Product support anddealer readiness
Customer support forthe 336E H is providedexclusively by the on theground support of Cater-pillar’s worldwide dealer
network. For decades,Cat dealers have madesignificant and substan-tial investments in facili-ties, people and expertiseto support Cat excava-tors, including the new336E H. Cat dealersknow and understandhydraulics, and are pre-pared to consult withcustomers to help deter-mine which Cat excavatormodel, whether hybrid orstandard, is the bestmatch for a customer.Dealers are also equippedwith tools developed byCaterpillar that helpthem weigh factors intotheir recommendations, including a customer’sprojected equipment use, budget and anticipatedyears of ownership tohelp ensure the properdecision. The 336E H canalso be bundled with ex-tended warranties andservice contracts.
Caterpillar positionon technology
According to Utley, it isthe company’s vertical in-tegration and broad tech-nology portfolio, coupledwith its wide range of ap-plication experience thatenable Caterpillar to se-lect and develop the opti-mal technologies for eachCat machine and variedcustomer applications.“Our commitment is tomatch technologies tocustomer value,” shesaid. “That means Cater-pillar will include hybridelements in machineswhere it is evident thoseelements are the most ef-ficient and effectivemeans of improving valueto our customers, whichis definitely what we’vedone with the 336E H.”
“Hybrid technology is akey element of our cus-tomer focused technologyportfolio, and so are ournext generation power-trains, autonomy, alter-native fuels, and engineemissions and efficiency,”Utley added. “The newhydraulic hybrid technol-ogy Caterpillar developedfor the 336E H is an out-standing example of theresults we’re achievingfrom our technologystrategy. It provides acritical bridge as we con-tinue to research, developand build the technolo-gies of the future tech-nologies that will help en-sure our customers’ busi-ness success.”

New features includeimproved wire feed
speed control and animproved wire deliverysystem for feeding ac-
curacy and consistencyAPPLETON, WI — Miller
Electric Mfg. Co. has in-troduced the new Suit-Case X-TREME 12VSvoltage sensing wire feed-er; a feeder designedspecifically for welding inheavy duty field applica-tions such as construc-tion, structural steel erec-tion, heavy equipment re-pair and mobile fabrica-tion. The new SuitCase X-
TREME 12VS features anew drive motor assem-bly, motor control and in-tegrated tachometer thatprovides electronic wirefeed speed control and ac-curacy that rivals the per-formance of bench topstyle feeders found inshop environments. Anew wire delivery systemalso eases wire loadingand provides minimal re-sistance in feeding, help-ing to further ensure con-sistent performance inMIG and Flux cored weld-ing applications.
Comparable wire feed-
ers tend to fluctuate inperformance throughoutthe day: As ambient tem-peratures change, and asthe feeder gets hotter orcolder, wire feed speedcan vary from its originalsetting. These changes inspeed can lead to signifi-cant changes in deposi-tion rates when welding, especially with large di-ameter cored wires. Thenew drive motor assem-bly and integratedtachometer in the Suit-Case X-TREME 12VS en-sures the accuracy of thewire feed speed through-
out the day so that thefeeder performs to exactparameters, whetherwelding with small diam-eter solid wire (.023 -nch)or large diameter coredwires (5/64-inch).
The new wire deliverysystem makes it easier toload the 12-inch wirespools and reduces dragon the wire by eliminatingthe inlet guide and allow-ing the wire to roll overthe large radius of thedrive rolls. It also fea-tures a new visual scaleon the wire pressureknob that eliminates
guesswork and allowswelders to specificallydial in tension to settingsthey know provide thebest performance for thesize and type of wire theyare working with.
Additional new featuresinclude the redesignedplacement of the shield-ing gas inlet (for MIG anddual shielded Flux coredwelding applications) tobetter protect the fittingfrom damage, and a newwire speed dual schedulefeature that reduces wirefeed speed to 87.5 percentof standard speed for ap-
plications such as pipewelding that may requirethe welder to adjust wirefeed speed for changingjoint geometries or posi-tions without having tostop and change settings. This feature requires adual schedule gun orswitch (sold separately).
This new product re-tains features that havemade the SuitCase line ofwire feeders the standardfor outdoor/portable MIGand Flux cored weldingapplications, includingSunVision™ digital me-ters that display voltageand wire feed speed andcan be seen even in brightsunlight; an extremelyportable and reliablepolypropylene case withbuilt-in slide rails and theability to open the door tochange wire in the verticalposition; and potted andtrayed main printed cir-cuit boards to ensure reli-ability even in harsh out-door environments. Thenew SuitCase X-TREME12VS is compatible withCC or CV DC powersources or engine drivenwelder/generators. Formore information visitMillerWelds.com.
