Emissions - Waste• Australia’s per capita emissions are the highest in the OECD

and among the highest in the world1

• Only last week, Australia was listed as the 7th biggest polluter on Earth in a study by the WWF2

• Emissions from landfill account for approximately 3% of Australia’s GHG emissions3

Site Specifics

• Of the estimated 2,707 reams generated per month, approximately 1,250 are recycled (46%)

• Best Practice = 98%

• The remaining 1,456 reams are either:– landfilled – disposed of in general waste; – not captured in recycling statistics (e.g. secure paper

not reported to Building management) and/or– Stored within the tenancy (e.g. filing/archiving)


Avoid, Reduce, Reuse

• Think before you print – move towards a paperless system

• Avoid disposable, single use items e.g. Coffee cups, disposable cutlery/plates

• Reuse drink bottles, turn scrap paper into notepads, etc.


Increase Recycling

• Engage, educate and motive

• Get competitive – start a recycling competition

• Get involved – take part in National Recycling week, Clean up Business Day, etc


Bin Systems?

– Play a key role in reducing consumption and increase paper recycling

– Recommended systems:• Single Bin System• Zero Bin System

What is the Single Bin System?

– One bin under each desk for “paper only” emptied daily by cleaners

– Support Bin Systems• Include bins in common areas, kitchens and print/mail

areas• General waste; co-mingled and paper/secure paper


What is the Zero Bin System

-No bins under desks

– Support Bin Systems• Include bins in common areas, kitchens and print/mail

areas• General waste; co-mingled and paper/secure paper


Case Study

• Offices with both general waste and paper recycling bins under desk achieved an average diversion rate of 63%

• Offices with the single bin system displayed the highest diversion rate of 73%, with 93% recovery of the major materials i.e. paper and cardboard


Benefits - Environmental

• Increase Primary Source segregation – by “getting it right the first time”

• Reduce plastic bin liners required for general waste bins

• Decrease contamination in the recycling stream

• Reduce waste going to landfill – reduced GHG – a greener environment

• Forces users to think about waste generation and in turn reduces overall waste generation


Benefits - Social

• Studies by the CSIRO1,Uni of QLD2 and UCLA3 have

shown that those who sit for long hours:– ‘People who regularly break up their sedentary time

with movement as small as taking one step had healthier waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and triglycerides”

• Landfill levy, Carbon Tax, etc. landfill will only increase in price

• Paper recycling is free, only pay for transport costs

• Under desk waste bins result in a decrease in recycling, an increase in landfill and an increase in leakage (recyclables disposed of into the general waste bin)
