“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,

This day shall gentle his condition:

And gentlemen in England now a-bed

Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,

And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks

That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.”

QUANTITY MATTERS

what can you do to make wastd better?IT’S NOT A GOOD PRACTICE TO START AN ARTICLE WITH A QUESTION, I KNOW. IT’S

MERELY A RETHORICAL TRICK TO ENTICE THE READER. A TRICK INDEED BASED UPON

THE FACT THAT WHEN YOU READ THE QUESTION IT HAPPENS YOU FEEL AS I’M ASKING

AT YOU, ONE BETWEEN A MILLION - I HOPE SO - TO GIVE ME THE RIGHT ANSWER.

YOU, AS A VERY SPECIFIC PERSON. I BLINDLY PICKED YOU UP AND, WITHOUT EVER

THE CHANCE TO MEET YOU, I CREATE A PERSONAL CONNECTION.

THIS IS THE WAY THE WHOLE WASTD PROJECTS ACTS. IT CREATES PERSONAL

CONNECTIONS WITH EVERY SINGLE USER. IT PICKS USERS UP TO MAKE THEM THE

CENTER OF A VERY PERSONAL CREATIVE WORLD. YOU ARE THE MAIN CHARACTER

ON THE STAGE.

YOU ARE THE ONE ABLE TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE, TO MAKE THE ACT UNIQUE AND

THE BEST EVER.

AND WHAT IF YOU ARE NO MORE THE ONE? NEVER MIND, SOMEONE ELSE WILL

CONTINUE FROM THE VERY POINT YOU LEFT, HE CONTINUES TO KEEP THE QUALITY

BAR AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE.

BUT, AS EVER A BUT IS PRESENT, THERE’S A LOOPHOLE IN THIS MECHANISM. WE

NEED TO BE A LOT, WE CONTINUOSLY NEED PEOPLE TO TAKE THE SHOW ON. WE

NEED PEOPLE TO MAKE IT LOUD AND TO PASS THE MESSAGE. WE NEED MORE, AND

MORE AND THEN MORE AGAIN.

WE NEED TO SPREAD THE WORD, TO LET ALL PEOPLE KNOW THERE’S A DIFFERENT

WORLD EXISTING. IF EVERYONE OF YOU LET TWO OTHER TO KNOW ABOUT WASTD

THEN OUR VOICES AND OUR LOUDNESS WILL BE THREE TIMES BIGGER.

THE MORE WE ARE THE BETTER THINGS WE CAN DO.

SHORT INTRODUCTION

My name is Lili Zoe, I was born in 1988 at Budapest, Hungary as a daughter of an artist father and a medical doctor mother. Now I am finishing my MA Photography degree at Moholy-Nagy

University of Art and Design, Budapest. Photography was love at the first sight for me when I was 15. I won a scholarship to Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan so I live in Milan now.

PHOTOGRAPHY AS A MISSION OR PASSION?

Both. My passion is to complete my mission, which is to save or create memorable feelings and moments through my models. I don’t want to make the world better with big words, I just want to give some feelings for the people. (anyway the word becomes better if people start to feel better)

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR SUBJECTS? Every time the subject of my photos are people who interest me, I am looking for their character and intimate world

then I try to visualize it. I want to get inside their own world with my camera.

WHAT ABOUT SCOPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY, COMMENTING, STORYTELLING OR MERE FINE ART?

Not easy to find the answer for this question. For me photography shows the photographer’s way of thinking of the subject and of the whole world. And the viewer of the

picture can keep on thinking and sooner or later the picture reaches the viewer emotionally as well. It is a wonderful line of thoughts, concept and emotions between the donor and the recipient. Like a novel, photography always tells something.

LIKE A NOVEL, PHOTOGRAPHY

ALWAYS TELLS

SOMETHING.

IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR WORK WITH 5 WORDS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

Intimacy, association, emotions, responsibility,… I am 22, I need more years and pictures to find out the fifth word.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE YOU DO IN YOUR WORK, IF THERE’S ANY?

I don’t have enough experience to know this yet, but I really want to know what it is.

WHAT ARE GOING TO BE YOUR NEXT PROJECTS?

I would like to prove myself in fashion photography, I’m really curious if I can do it in an intimate artistic way.

IF YOU HAVE TO SUGGEST A PHOTOGRAPHER YOU WANT TO BE INTERVIEWED, WHO WOULD BE AND WHY?

It would be Elinor Carucci, I love her works. Her private intimate photos give me a lot of inspiration.

INTIMACY, ASSOCIATION,

EMOTIONS, RESPONSIBILITY…

Hurricane Ivan: Ivan Manuppelli’s

pseudonym. He’s born in the

1985. He’s the founder and (not)

responsible editorial chief of “The

Artist” and “PUCK!”. These two

magazines are born respectively in

the 2001 an 2009 with the help of

Emanuele Fossati and Igor Mangano

(later replaced by Marco Faletti).

Many different illustrator related to

the Underground Comix movement

are published within the magazine:

Foolbert Sturgeon, Hunt Emerson,

Pat Moriarity, Bill Griffith, Gary Leib,

Jay Kinney, Mike Diana, Maurizio

Ercole, Maurizio Rosenzweig, Sergio

Ponchione, Max Capa, Roberto

Mangosi and also the renown italian

animator Osvaldo Cavandoli.

He created and published on those

magazines the autobiographic series

“Groove”, “The adventures of Stanley

the Jackal” and his most famous: the

devilish Puck the dwarf. The latter, on

due time, is going to be re-drawn by

more than 100 illustrator from all over

the world.

In 2007 he joined the Mammafotogramma

group to create an animated version of

one of his comic: Aztrokitifk & Mario.

Within the project he acted as

screenwriter, graphic designer and

director.Unfortunately the proje

ct was halted,

because of the high cost. Indeed the

entire group was heavily in debt. Anyhow

two episodes came to light: “Aztrokitifk

& Mario, worst than Houdini!” (co-

directed by Marco Falatti) and

“Aztrokitifk & Mario becoming criminals!”

(co-directed by Gianluca Lo Presti).

Both the episodes are freely viewable on

YouTube.

Meanwhile he was as illustrator and

cartoonist on the following publications:

Rolling Stone, XL by Repubblica, My Way

(a french fanzine), Maltese Narrazioni,

Sherwood Comix, Link, Liberazione,

Lamette, Collettivomensa.

In september 2009, as a protest

against the exclusion of PUCK! magazine

by the Lucca Comics Fair, the whole

magazine collective engaged an active

street performances at Lucca. As a

vendor was hired Silvano Falatti, he sold

copies of the magazine to the passers-

by while shouting antigovernment slogans.

This year, on the 21st of January, at

the Don Gallery in Milan, there was

a retrospective about the 10 years

of activity of the The Artist/PUCK!

collective. The PUCK! Show, this was

the title, was organised by the collective

members: Ivan Manuppelli, Emanuele

Fossati, Marco Falatti.

On the first night, Hunt Emerson, a

british cartoonist, and Franco Trincale,

a street storyteller, actively participated

the show.

Ivan is among the editors of the new

Frigidaire Magazine. Vincenzo Sparagna

is the Editorial Chief.

To be published on this magazine,

after having spent a year publishing

short stories, he created the “I Nuovi

Partigiani” (the new partisans). A totally

new story which addresses the (mis)

adventures of a ramshackle group of

85yo terrorists.

He collaborates with Maurizio Rosenzweig

on the comic Davide Golia by using the

pseudonym Muffa.

He plays bass guitar, harmonica, other

than writing the lyrics, for the Hamelin

(a rock’n roll psycho blues band). www.

A SHORT INTRODUCTION OF YOURSELF, FOR EXAMPLE WHY, WHEN OR HOW YOU STARTED BEING AN ILLUSTRATOR?

I started to imagine stories when I was a child. I used to create from scratch the most weird and dark characters, my brother helping me, and so I spent the most of my days day-dreaming. Things started to become much more serious when I decided to publish my own magazine, I was 15 yo: the Artist. It was a good way to avoid the boringness and to meet new people. In the first issue, completely cyclostyled, I published all stuff my friends gave me. The material was quite childish: doodles, gangster stories, how-to-roll-your-joint articles. Nowadays it is kind of funny to think about that period, nonetheless that magazine is a fundamental step

on my path and we, me and the magazine, got along for a very long time. It gave me the chance to grow up as an author, without having to cope with the hard truth a publisher press on you, the former probably it would be too early as an experience. The magazine on due time became much more solid and coherent, now it’s called PUCK!. On the magazine along the years a lot of authors were published, between the best of the breed imho. : Hunt Emerson, Osvaldo Cavandoli, Bill Wray, Sergio Ponchione, Maurizio Rosenzweig, Pat Moriarity, Frank Stack, Carlo Peroni, Bacilieri… other than great people as Franco Trincale, Adrian Bandirali, Filippo Auti, Gerry Bruno.

FROM WHAT ARE YOU INSPIRED?

From events around me. I try to catch the most of the information, I mix them in my mind and then I present them to you as a byproduct...

YOUR WORKS ARE THE RESULT OF A DEEP DOCUMENTATION PROCESS OR OF A CREATIVE IMPROVISATION?

I look ever at the same authors before to start drawing, as a ritual. It’s a personal way to gain self esteem: to check myself against the big authors from the past makes me feel better.Ganefs!, by Bill Elder, published on the first issue of MAD, is one of those I knew by hearth because of the many times I read it. Frame by frame. This is also true for the most part of the comics by Jack Davis, Bonvi, Magnus&Bunker and Robert Crumb. By these you can only

Page 22: wastd|Magazine n1

4342 wlMagazineMMM aMaMlMMMMw ggagMwwM gMMM gawwwwwwwMwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww aazaaaaaM nenzinniia naa iinnazazazazzza eazzzzzzzzzzzzzzazne wlMagazineMMM aMaMlMMMMw ggagMwwM gMMM gawwwwwwwMwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww aazaaaaaM nenzinniia naa iinnazazazazzza eazzzzzzzzzzzzzzazne

learn.I pretty sure my style is strongly influenced by these reading experiences. If you asked me to call some more specific references I would name: the kinky style of the Alan Ford’s beginning, the dark humour of Creepy and EC Comics, the cynical point of view of Bonvi (Cronache del Dopobomba).Sometimes instinct dominates. But it’s only appearance indeed nothing pops out by chance. I firmly believe that, also as an unconscious level, there’s ever the usage of some existing model.

COMIC IS MAINLY ENTERTAINMENT, DO YOU BELIEVE IT HAS DIFFERENT MEANINGS AND IT MUST BE CONSIDERED A WORK OF ART?

Have you ever had the chance to think all this is about a plan to rule the world? Think of it

as following: secret services hire the best cartoonist ever to draw sensible communications into their comics as subliminal messages. Those authors then have the power to overthrow governments, to get acquainted with femmes fatales, to destroy the Communist menace or on the contrary to let Communism rules the world. By the way, considering what the publishers are used to pay for the comics, that would be a great way to have a better wage.

ADMITTING THAT ONE EXISTS, WHAT’S THE MISTAKE YOU COMMIT MORE FREQUENTLY IN YOUR WORKS?

Missing the deadline. It’s a never ending f..ing domino effect: late drafts, then late definitives, then late because of the closed art shop, late lunch, late supper, hours late at the date where the girl while waiting

for me is punching a voodoo doll that is utterly similar to me. And, btw, late payments. ARE YOUR WORKS ADDRESSED TO A SPECIFIC TARGET?

Milla Jovovich. Every single ink drop is devoted to her.

COMICS ARE EVER CONCEIVED AROUND ONE OR MANY MAIN CHARACTERS. WITHIN YOUR WORKS DO THEY REPRESENT METAPHORS OF THE REALITY?

I love to think about my characters as poor people seeking a winning, but not probable, chance. I look at them as a defective piece of the Big System or, if you prefer, the leasts in the Social Hierarchy. They all are fighting for the their safety. The dwarf Puck, probably my most renown character, is fundamentally a dude that

Page 23: wastd|Magazine n1

lives by doing mischiefs, one of those you are willing to avoid in your everyday life because if he chose you then he’s going to be a pain in the ass. Jack, from the Groove series, is living on his girlfriends being perpetually without a job. Stanley the jackal is ever hungry. Aztrokitifk & Mario, the main characters of a series you can find on YouTube, are the emblem of the Great Depression: two fallen movie stars. Precary Man, an awkward superhero, the only one I’d ever drawn, is a ridiculous victim of the of insecurity among workers. They are all full of a primeval angriness, ever looking for

revenge, but nonetheless they cope with their desperation, being actually their natural habitat. They struggle to survive by conceiving clever strategies to pay the let or to be a hero, ever achieving the worst results possible. This is leitmotiv of my characters and of my comics.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR NEXT PROJECTS?

I’m working on a new satyrical series, to be published regularly on Frigidaire. The adventure of a leftish terroristic band composed by a group of 80yo guys, a mix

between the Brigate Rosse (red brigades) and the Armata Brancaleone (a Monicelli’s movie). The comic is called “the New Partisans” and tells about the doings of seven 85yo former IIWW partisans (one of them is actually dead) while they are trying to bring freedom to

Italy by ditching the existing politicians. A very important politician is killed in a any new episode, to meet the desires of the angriest readers, and there’s a redundant voiceover accompanying the scenes. It’s going to be funnyI’m working on a special PUCK! issue too. It’s an experiment, as Art

Spiegelman did and the Cadavere Squisito Surrealista did before. It’s a collective comic book, drawn by 101 international renown cartoonists. I care a lot about this project, given the widespread support in

unexpected places. But now everything is strictly top secret.

WHO IS THE NEXT ILLUSTRATOR THAT DESERVES TO BE INTERVIEWED AND WHY?

Elena Rapa, she is fabolous. Or Geremia Moscatelli, a.k.a. Welcome Suckers. Have you ever seen his punk music record covers? If he were alive I would suggest Filippo Auti (votafrankestein.blogspot.com), a street

artist. He was the highly unpredictable painter I ever known, nonetheless a great source of inspiration. He died poor, as in a Dickens’ story. But he was great, damn it! I’ve never seen someone able to twist and desecrate the society as he was able. His specialties were the collages and the open-air rallies in the artists’ borough of Brera. In those hallucinated speeches the whole society were dissected, piece by piece, and by using his twisted fantasy he was able to depict chilling scenarios: corpses fleeing from hospitals, crooks becoming saints and corrupt politicians. And, of course, the harsh and cruel street life.
