Our two past gourd festivals have been so much fun (and the next promises to be a lot more of the same), but I must admit what I enjoyed most last year was preparing a gourd for our WSGS competition. Planning what I wanted to do, picturing it in my mind, then putting paint to gourd, bringing my finished gourd to the festival and actually entering it in the competition, and then waiting anxiously for the results – what a challenging and worthwhile experience for me. Now you have that same opportunity because our current competition rules, divisions, and entry form have been posted on our web page.

With the approval of our WSGS board, we have done away with the rule that forced prior first place winners in the “Open Division” to enter the following year in the “Master Craftsman Division.” So if you have pre-viously won a blue ribbon at one of our festivals in say the Open “carved” category, you are still eligible to enter another piece of gourd art work in that same Open category this year. Those who won a blue ribbon in a Novice category, though, must move up to the Open cate-gory.

For you novices, there is one category for any decorative gourds crafted in a class, use of a tutorial, or design taken from a book or publication that uses another artist's design. If you are using your own design, there are the following categories: Carved, Chiseled, Gouged, Cut or Filigree; Woodburned; Inlayed, Beaded, Woven; Painted Only; Functional Gourd (masks, musical instruments, purses, hats, jewelry, bird houses, lamps, or any other usable item); and “Anything Goes.” Please remember that a novice is a true beginner, one who has limited experience in gourd craft-ing and other related arts and crafts (honor system).

In the Open Division, we again have a category for any decorative gourds crafted in a class, use of a tutorial, or design taken from a book or publi-cation that uses another artist's design. For those using your own gourd design, you can enter in one or more of the following categories: Carved, Chiseled, Gouged, Cut or Filigree; Woodburned; Inlayed or Beaded; Woven, Couched, or Coiled; Holiday Theme; Musical Instruments; Masks; Functional Gourd (masks, purses, hats, jewelry, bird houses, lamps, or any other usable item); Americana or Patriotic Theme or Scene; Pacific Northwest Design; and “Anything Goes.” We added two new Open Division categories: Floral Design; and Miniature (3” or less); and combined human figures, animal, or fantasy creatures as part of Sculptural. The Open Division is for those who do not consider themselves a beginner and is open to all ages and skill levels.

In the Master’s Craftsman Division (the advanced to professional gourd crafter whose work has been exhibited in galleries, previously won top awards in art/gourd competitions, or has reached the level of fine art/craft), there are three categories: Sculptural Gourds; Vases, Bowls or Contain-ers; and “Anything Goes.”

There’s also a category for Juniors (ages 12 or younger) and Teens (ages 13 to 17).

The fees are: Youth - $2 per entry

Early Entry Forms (Must be postmarked by Friday, June 29, 2012)

WSGS member in good standing - $5 per entry; non-member - $6 per entry.

Entries at the door July 12 and July 13

WSGS member in good standing - $7 per entry; non-member - $8 per entry.

Besides the bonus of being able to brag that your art was in a gourd competition, there are beautiful ribbons being awarded. Your name could be on one of them!

Every WSGS member is qualified for at least one competi-tion category so what’s stopping you from entering your gourd in our festival competition? Plus there’s no limit on the number of entries you can submit. No excuses – just get your gourd on!!!

One of the true complements is being asked to contribute to a collective work with other very talented artists. Those who jump at the chance to have their work on a traveling gourd have a confi-dence that is inspiring. It always amazes me what our membership does to a gourd and how they interpret the theme.

I kidded around that my panel was going to be canned salmon, mainly because I had no idea how I was going to use the mold pattern and the defects in my panel in a composition. The first basic sketch looked like freaky fish birds from an-other planet. As you can see, I finally worked it out. I studied coho salmon images on the Internet to learn about them then used tools like my printer pro-gram, outlining on paper then moving images around to try out compositions. Once I had the composition I liked, I printed the image on stick-n-burn so I could lightly burn the image on the gourd. Then next step was to protect the light or natural color of the gourd. I used wax and a special Razor Tip pen but liquid masking would work well if not better. The rest is adding detail with burning and color.

I hope the next time there is a call to contribute to a traveling gourd, you will jump at the chance. It is a wonderful way to help raise funds for our festival and have your work admired by all. To buy tickets for this gourd, contact any board member, give me a call or drop me an email!

Stacy Annon

If you would like the chance to win the current Traveling Gourd please contact any of the board members to buy tickets. Raffle tickets are a $1.00 each. The win-ner will be announced at the festival.

This years theme is Northwest Animals

Our featured Gourd Artist for this issue is Laura Fraser.

My first experience with gourds was way back in 2000 when Alana Riviera came to a woodcarving rondevue teaching a begin-ners class on gourds. I made a drinking vessel. Still have it today, but never really finished it for I haven't come across the right type of handle for it.

Never touched a gourd since, until about 4 years ago. I got involved in volunteering for a couple of different organizations at the same time which consumed most of my time.

Teaching woodcarving at several senior centers, kept me pretty busy. Finally reached the time, that it was time for me to do what I wanted to do. It all started, that the gourd class I wanted to go too, just happened to be the same day teaching woodcarving. I gave up teaching wood-carving to attend the gourd class in Marysville. Although I still keep up some of my woodcarving passion today. BUT NOW MY PASSION IS GOURDS!!!!!

Through my class in Marysville, I get very inspired to try to keep up with the exceptional talented gourd artists in that class. I believe my favorite part of gourding is actually coming up with some original designs and ideas to push the lim-its. I guess I'm always looking for that "WOW" factor. I get blown away by see-ing what my fellow gourd artist come up with. Thanks to my great teachers and fellow gourders, I cant ever, for see, me never gourding. I just love it!!!!!!!
