THE HEAD COACH: A new era o Washington ootball begins this all when thenewly-renovated Husky Stadium opens its doors on Aug. 31. The 93-year old legendhas undergone a thorough rebuild that will make it one o the grandest, most beauti-ul sports venues in the nation. With the new stadium come heightened interest andenergy around the Husky program as the Dawgs look to springboard into yet anotherera o on-eld successes. Poised to take them there is th-year head coach SteveSarkisian, who has assembled the pieces on oense and deense, in recruiting andnow in acilities and inrastructure to put the Huskies back on top. Since arriving atthe UW ater the 2008 season, Sarkisian has taken the Dawgs rom their lowest olows to three bowl games in his our seasons. Now his task is to continue that upwardmovement. In 2012, the Huskies posted a 7-6 overall record, going 5-4 in Pac-12 play, despite acing one o the nations most rigorous schedules, which included a seven-game stretch that included matchups with ve teams ranked in the top 11 in the APpoll. Washington posted a pair o memorable victories over top-10 oes, beating 8th-ranked Stanord, the eventual Pac-12 champs, 17-13, on a Thursday night in Seattle. In the eighth week o the season, the Dawgs handed seventh-ranked Oregon State itsrst loss o the season, 20-17, in another down-to-the-wire win. For the season, theHuskies made considerable strives on deense, cutting nearly 100 yards and more than11 points per game o o its per-game average rom the previous year. On oense, the UW had its ourth straight season with a 1,000-yard rusher as sophomore BishopSankey ran or 1,439 yards. The 2011 season, Sarkisians third as head coach, providedmore highlights or his up-and-coming program. The Husky oense posted one o itsmost prolic seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course o the season, the most

by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most inschool history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did theprevious year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yardsper game) and total oense (47 more yards per game), while the teams third-downpercentage improved vastly over the previous season, rom 32 to 46 percent. In 2010,Sarkisians second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step orward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and nished third in the Pac-10 Conerence with a 5-4record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one o the bowl seasons topgames, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskerswas the last o a series o exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included threeHusky wins decided on the very last play o the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plusanother in which the winning score came inside the nal minute (WSU). Sarkisian wasintroduced as the new head coach o the Washington ootball team on Dec. 8, 2008.From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didnt think it would take long to turn the

program around and get it back to the high level o success that UW ootball has en-joyed throughout its history. In his rst season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he wasright. Washington, which posted a winless season or the rst time in school historythe year beore Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvemento ve victories over the previous year. No BCS-conerence school in the nation couldboast such improvement in terms o wins in 2009. And, Sarkisians Husky squad pulledo that eat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the seasonbowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth o experience as a quarterbackscoach and oensive coordinator. His string o success is nearly unprecedented as, dur-ing his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one o thenations most consistent and dominant oenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as theTrojans assistant head coach and oensive coordinator. He had also previously servedas assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (2002-03) and as an oensive assistant (2001) at USC, or a total o seven seasons there. Dur-ing his seven seasons as a member o the Trojans sta, the team posted a combined74-15 record. As oensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside rom his variousroles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach or the OaklandRaiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Cali., in 2000, hisrst coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiateand pro levels. Ater his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was playedor the Saskatchewan Roughriders o the Canadian Football League or three seasons(1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing underlegendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-o-824 passes (66.6 percent)or 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing eciencyrating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation inpassing eciency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conerence champion

Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Oensive Playeo the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transerred

to BYU rom El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). Hewas a rst-team Junior College All-America selection as a sophomore and earned allconerence honors in 1993. He also played baseball at El Camino in 1993. He originallenrolled at USC as a baseball player, spending the all o 1992 on the Trojans rosterSarkisian was a standout ootball and baseball player at West Torrance (Cali.) HighHe earned his bachelors degree in sociology rom BYU in 1997 ater receiving his associates degree rom El Camino in 1994. Sarkisian was born March 8, 1974. He and hiswie, Stephanie, have two daughters, Ashley and Taylor, and a son, Brady.

COACHING STAFF: Washingtons assistant coaching sta welcomedjust two new members in 2013 as ormer graduate assistant JordanPaopao was elevated to tight ends coach and legendary Husky quarter-back Marques Tuiasosopo returned to Montlake to coach quarterbacks.Oensive coordinator Eric Kiesau also made a move, switching rom quar-terbacks to receivers coach (while maintaining his coordinating duties).Nearly all o the UWs nine ull-time assistant coaches have some sort otie to the Northwest and many played or then-Pac-10 ootball programs.

The oensive side o the ball is led by second-year assistant Kiesau, whocame to the UW rom Caliornia. A ormer QB at Portland State, Kiesauhad spent the previous decade at either Cal or Colorado. Idaho grad DanCozzetto is in his th season as the UWs run game coordinator and o-ensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also theWashington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW rom Arizona State.Paopao, who played at San Diego, had spent the previous two years asa GA at Washington, is the son o ormer BC Lions assistant coach TonyPaopao. Assistant head coach, running backs coach and special teamscoordinator Johnny Nansen is a th-year coach at the UW. He grew up inLong Beach, Cali., but played ootball at Washington State and spent theprevious ve years at Idaho beore moving over to the UW. The deensivesta saw no changes ater the 2012 season. Coordinator Justin Wilcox

grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent our years as a deensive back atOregon. He came to the UW rom Tennessee and, prior to that, coached atBoise State, among others. His ormer college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A our-year starter at Oregon and a nativeo Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL or seven years beoremoving on to coaching. Ater stints at Central Washington and Oregon,he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee beore coming to Seattle. The de-ensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a our-year letterman at OregonState. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six o the lastseven seasons. Deensive line coach and deensive run game coordinatorTosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at Calior-nia beore moving to the UW this in 2012. A ormer Cal deensive line-man, hed coached the line at his alma mater the last our years ater twoseasons as a GA. Washington has our new graduate assistants: ormerHusky wide receiver DAndre Goodwin, Kenyon Blue, Connor Knowles andDanny Razore.

VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies ull-time coach-ing sta includes just one UW graduate (Marques Tuiasosopo), nearly allo them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprisingnumber have actually played or their alma mater against the Dawgs. Headman Steve Sarkisians only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996came to the UW at Husky Stadium. Deensive coaches Justin Wilcox andPeter Sirmon both aced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregonrom 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies running backs coach and special teams coordinator, wason the opposite sideline or several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s

and new deensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a ew barnburnersvs. the UW or Oregon State rom 1997 to 2000. More recently, deensiveline coach Tosh Lupoi squared o with the Huskies during his time as ad-lineman at Caliornia at the start o the last decade. And while oensiveline coach Dan Cozzetto ever aced Washington during his career at Idaho,he grew up in the Evergreen State (Spokane), while tight ends coach JordanPaopao spent some o his childhood living in Vancouver, B.C., when his dadcoached with the BC Lions o the CFL. Finally, new oensive coordinatorEric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play hiscollege ootball just across the border at Portland State.

HUSKIES vs. ILLINI HISTORY: For a stretch o time rom 1950 through1972, Washington and Illinois aced one another on a semi-regular basissquaring o nine times, with all but one o those coming in the regulaseason. However, beore and ater those two years, they've not played oneanother, meaning its been 41 years since the last game. Washington holdsthe edge in the all-time series, with ve wins and our losses. In 1950, rsmeeting between the two, an unranked Illinois hosted a 10th-ranked andprevioulsy unbeaten (4-0) Husky team, upsetting the Dawgs in Champaign

20-13. The Huskies went on to nish 8-2 that season, the only other losscoming to Cal. The ollowing year, 8th-ranked Illinois visited Seattle and lewith another win, beating No. 20 UW, 27-20. The Illini made it three winsin a row with a convincing 48-14 victory in 1952 in Champaign. Washingtonnally got its rst win over Illinois in 1956, coach Darrell Royal's lone seasonat Washington, when the Huskies beat the Illini, 28-13, in Seattle. The seriespicked up back in 1961, a 20-7 UW win in Champaign. The ollowing yearThe Dawgs won their third in a row in the series, a 28-7 decision. Atethe 1963 season, the two teams met in the 1964 Rose Bowl. In that onea Dick Butkus-lead Illinois squad took a 3-0 lead into haltime and thenout-paced Junior Coey, Rick Redman, Bill Douglas, Charlie Browning andthe Huskies, 17-7. Illinois' Jim Grabowski rushed or 125 yards and wasnamed the game's MVP. The last two meetings between the two came

in the 1971 and 1972 seasons, both Husky wins behind the arm o SonnySixkiller. In '71, tthe Dawgs posted a 52-14 victory in Champaign and thenollowed that up with a 31-11 win the next season in Seattle.

WASHINGTON-ILLINOIS TIES: Its no shock that there are very ewconnections between the UW and Illinois coaching stas and playerosters. In act, there are no Huskies rom Illinois and no Illini players romWashington (or the Pacic Northwest, or that matter). None o the severaIllinois players rom Caliornia went to high school with any o the Huskiesrom there (its worth noting that the UWs Kevin Smith went to Centennial High School in Compton while Illinois Eric Finney attended anotheCentennial, in Riverside). On the coaching side, a ew members o the UWsta have worked at places where Illinois coaches have spent time, butnever together on the same sta.

HUSKIES vs. THE BIG TEN: Washington holds a 44-44-2 record alltime vs. Big Ten opponents, a record that includes an 0-2 mark againsPenn State (though the Nittany Lions were not members o the Big Tenat the time o their games against the UW) and 4-5-1 vs. Nebraska, alsoobviously not a Big Ten member at the time o any o those games. Washington has played all 12 Big Ten teams multiple times, but have acedan Big Ten opponent only once since 2003 (the UW played Indiana in 03and Ohio State in 07). The Huskies have played Big Ten teams seventimes in bowl games since 1990 (not counting Nebraska in the HolidayBowl last season): Iowa in the 1990 Rose Bowl, Michigan in the 1992and 1993 Rose Bowls, Iowa in the 1995 Sun Bowl, Michigan State in the1997 Aloha Bowl, Purdue in the 2001 Rose Bowl and Purdue in the 2002

Sun Bowl. The Huskies went 4-3 in those games. Heres the UWs all-timerecord vs. current Big Ten teams: 5-4 vs. Illinois, 1-2 vs. Indiana, 3-3 vsIowa, 5-7 vs. Michigan, 2-1 vs. Michigan State, 7-10 vs. Minnesota, 4-5-1vs. Nebraska, 3-0 vs. Northwestern, 3-8 vs. Ohio State, 0-2 vs. Penn State7-2-1 vs. Purdue, 4-0 vs. Wisconsin.

T E A M N O T E SDEFENSE ON THE RISE: Washington's deense made tremendousimprovements in 2012 as compared to the 2011 totals. The Huskies werebetter on deense across the board, but most notably improved against thepass, where they went rom the 116th (out o 120 teams) ranked unit in thenation to the 23rd . Here's a look at where the UW's per-game average andNCAA rank in all o the major team deense categories in 2011 and 2012:

    2011 Avg. (NCAA Rank) 2012 Avg. (NCAA Rank)Rushing Defense 168.69 (76th) 160.08 (61st)Passing Defense 284.62 (116th) 197.31 (23rd)Pass Eff. Defense 137.57 (87th) 115.39 (27th)Total Defense 453.31 (106th) 357.38 (31st)Scoring Defense 35.92 (108th) 24.15 (39th)

1,000-YARD STREAK: Husky sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey breachedthe 1,000-yard mark or the 2012 season in the win over Utah. He nishedthe season with 1,439 yards, third-most in UW history. Sankey was just the11th dierent player in UW history to rush or 1,000 yards and his seasonwas the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. In our years under headcoach Steve Sarkisian, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back each year.

Chris Polk reached the benchmark each o the last three seasons and Sankeytook over the streak in 2012.

DAWGS IN AN NFL STADIUM: Given that the UW played its entire 2012season at CenturyLink Field, home to the Seattle Seahawks, playing in anNFL stadium this weekend in Chicago wont be that novel. In act, the UWhas played in a number o current or ormer NFL stadiums over the years.O course, the Dawgs regularly play in the Los Angeles Coliseum, ormerhome to the Rams, Raiders and Chargers. The UW has also played in aew Holiday Bowl game in San Diegos proessional ballpark. Additionally,Washington has played in the Orange Bowl (Dolphins), Pitt Stadium(Steelers), Sun Devil Stadium (Cardinals) and Kezar Stadium (49ers). Itsworth noting that Husky Stadium was the Seahawks home eld in 2000and 2001 (as well as or three games in 1994).

THREE BOWLS IN FOUR YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: Byreaching a bowl game last year or the third season while just our yearsremoved rom a winless season, Washington pulled o a rare eat. TheHuskies were just the third team in the last 50 years o major college oot-ball to have gone rom winless to three bowl games within our seasons. The only other programs to accomplish that eat are Indiana (winless in1984; bowl games in 1986, 1987 and 1988) and Florida (winless in 1979;bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983). In 2011, the UW became oneo just eight teams ever to go to two bowls within three seasons ater ano-win season.

THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conerence added

Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which alongwith Caliornia is one o two schools who have been in the conerencesince its ounding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the otherthree Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanord and Calior-nia. Under current plans, each school will play all ve division rivals, plusour o six teams in the other division each season. The rst two seasons, the Huskies did not ace UCLA or Arizona State. This year, and 2014, theHuskies dont ace Utah or USC.
