Washington County Library System Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! What’s New @ Your Library The Washington County Library System strives to be a vital part of every community in our county, and while you see staff working hard in every branch every day, there are those behind the scenes that are working just as hard. The Library Board is comprised of six volunteer members from throughout the county, and one County Commissioner. They are library users, supporters, and advocates that truly are invested in creating a stronger community for all of us. They care about the library, and they care what you think. And, like Dr. Seuss said, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” Our Library Board devotes many hours each year to the Library System, and deserve a sincere nod of gratitude. Our libraries continue to improve in many ways and the Library Board would like to hear from YOU! Please feel free to contact them with your ideas. Washington County Library Board You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." Students throughout the United States are celebrating the 109th birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss by pledging to be lifelong readers. What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday than reading? On the evening of March 2nd (Dr. Seuss's birthday), parents and their children are participating in the annual Read Across America. Dr. Seuss, who’s real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, created children’s books that have been enduring favorites of generations of readers. Pick up one of your favorite Dr. Seuss books @ your Library and join in the fun! The Advanced Workstations in Education (AWE ) have arrived at the Washington County Library System! AWE Early Literacy Stations (ELS) are all-in-one digital learning centers loaded with activities for children ages 2-10. They are designed to optimize educational effectiveness while making learning exciting and fun. The Workstations offer children a safe, stand-alone computer, not connected to the Internet, which is age-appropriate, colorful, engaging and academically relevant for children. The ELS has a colorful keyboard, large touchscreen, headphones and tiny mouse for little hands to promote easy learning and discovery. Three Early Literacy Stations were purchased and rotate to different branches throughout the year. The Library System supports national and state educational standards, and the educational software on the ELS computers cover seven curricular areas: reading, math, science, social studies, writing, arts and music, and reference. The system is designed to attract and educate toddlers through early elementary school students with games and activities that teach children as they play and have fun. The Early Literacy Stations reflect the Washington County Library System’s ongoing commitment to provide a wide array of resources to promote reading and education, inspiring every child in the community to become a lifelong learner. This month, the Santa Clara Branch library welcomed back Carrie Vaughn to the sta. Carrie worked for Santa Clara in for a year and a half before resigning to take care of her family. She had to compete with 450 other applicants, but her experience and great customer service put at the top of the list.Carrie says“I’m excited to be back at the Santa Clara Branch. I was born and raised here in Utah, but have also lived on both coasts. I have two fantastic kids; I’ve a seven-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy. In my free time I love to read, sew, spend time outdoors, and spend lots of time with my family. I love the library and am very happy to have the opportunity to work here again.”Stop by the library to see a new familiar face, and say Hi!
