1. WELCOME LETTER FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Some compare the skyline of Warsaw to Manhattan, but luckily our skyscrapers are much smaller, which gives Warsaw a more human dimension.

In the 1930s the first tall building in Warsaw was constructed – The Pudential, 66 metres high with eighteen storeys, back then the second tallest skyscraper in Europe.

In 1955 the 237-metres tall (head included) Palace of Culture was completed, which until present day is the tallest building in town. Currently as many as 44 buildings taller than Prudential are there and several more are either built or designed.

But the action is on the ground floor. New places are opened every week – however, some of them don’t last long. Some become super trendy. Many are too trendy for me from day one.

Warsaw is an archipelago. Some places are more attractive than others. If you are here just for a day or two, please don’t miss the Warsaw Rising Musem, www.1944.pl. In two hours you will understand the tragic history of our town. You will know why the Old Town is not really old…

If you want peace and quiet, go for a walk in Łazienki Park (Royal Baths) or try the new boulevards at the Vistula River during the day. In the evening, particularly on weekends, several places like Nowy Świat, Plac Zbawiciela, Powiśle, are very lively. Young people work hard during the week and party hard at weekends.

On the following pages my colleagues and I recommend you some places which are interesting for people like us. Even your concierge may not know about some of them.

ACCESS TO SCREENINGS - PICK UP YOUR TICKETS

Your festival ID gives you access to the selected screenings; the festival ID is only valid with a free ticket, which should be picked up at the accreditation stand at KINOTEKA 10am - 6pm (10:00-18:00), but at least half an hour before the screening; tickets can be collected for the selected screenings on a given day and for the next day only. You can get all information about the festival at the info point at Kinoteka.

IF YOU ARE PRESENTING YOUR FILM DURING THE FESTIVAL, you are welcome to make an introduction and meet the audience for a Q&A after all the screenings of your film. We provide interpreters who speak English, French, and Russian. Please contact our Guest Service if you need assistance in any other language.

MEETING YOUR INTERPRETER

Please meet your interpreter at the hotel lobby 30 mins before the screening.

Please kindly reserve your time during the screening for an interview with the Festival TV.

Kindly note: Q&A sessions at the Shorts Competition are held in English ONLY.

PHOTO SESSION

We would like to invite you to our studio for a brief photo session; the studio is located at the KINOTEKA cinema, in the coffee bar to the left from the entrance and foyer of MULTIKINO cinema our photographers will be there for you everyday from 3 pm till 8 pm (15:00-20:00).

AIRPORT SHUTTLE

If you did not send us your travel details in advance, please go to our Guest Service Desk at the Marriott hotel and check shuttle availabilities for your flight. Please be at the airport at least one hour before departure (or earlier, in case of flights outside of Europe – pleases always check) and take into account that the hotel-airport transfer can take 45 min or more (during rush hour); you may check the flight status at www.lotnisko-chopina.pl.

This is a "must see" list for Warsaw. Starting with the city centre with the sky race for the tallest building to shadow the dominance of the communist heritage of the Palace of Culture and Science, through the Saxon Garden and the mostly viewed on TV news the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (most of foreign officials usually pay respects here) towards the heart of the Old City. One fourth of Warsaw ground is taken over by green places: parks, gardens, even forests on the outskirts. Join me for the relaxing stroll through those charming places. We'll start with the glimpse into the Royal Lazienki Garden with its unique mixture of original 18th century architecture and landscape, then we will move along the Warsaw escarpment and hopefully get to the top of the roof garden (the only one in this part of Europe) in the Warsaw University New Library building. JEWISH WARSAW - Sunday, October 12, at 11:00 AM

Every third person in Warsaw before the WW2 was Jewish. It was the second largest Jewish community in the world. Let's experience the bit of their history. Warsaw was home to Issaac Bashevis Singer (Noble-winning writer), Władysław Szpilman (whose story Polański screened in "The Pianist"). On our way we'll have a synagogue which used to be a stable, the theatre which currently stages plays in Yiddish, and we will try to find the remains of Warsaw ghetto which was razed to the ground after the Ghetto uprising.

WARSAW OF CONTRATS - Tuesday, October 13, 11:00 AM The 19th century buildings next to the Soviet modeled new districts of the city and the enclave of peace and quiet in the special estate of 100 -year -old villas designed for Warsaw Technical University professors are the highlights of our walk. Do you know that Warsaw has only one city centre street with its original architecture? Do you know that Konstytucji Square is one of the world's largest example of social realist planning? Can you imagine wooden houses estate in the very heart of Warsaw? This walk will take us a bit off the beaten route but at the same time might help you understand the complexity of the place more.

ROMANTIC WARSAW - Wednesday, October 14, 11:00 AM Do you know that the emblem of Warsaw is the mermaid who fell in love... - a bit like in Disney's movie ;-). This walk will give you a chance to listen to this one and many other romantic stories which tell the history of the city and its inhabitants: Fryderyk Chopin, Maria Curie-Skłodowska and others. I'll also show you the Warsaw University campus where you'll have a possibility to shake hands with one of the students. Finally I will show you one of the newest of the romantic places in Warsaw on the bank of the Vistula River that you'll for sure want to visit by night later on ... This is the walk for adults only ;-)

PHOENIX CITY - Thursday, October 15, 11:00 AM Come and listen to the story of the "phoenix city" which reconstruction was unprecedented act in itself and as such got acknowledged by listing in UNESCO Heritage List. Are you interested to know what Napoleon thought of the place? We'll walk the streets of the Old Town (Stare Miasto) and neighboring area (Krasiński Square) to find some of the answers to... universal secrets of human nature ;-)

PRAGA - Saturday, October 17, at 11:00 AM If you want to see a different face of Warsaw join our trip and explore Old Praga district. This part of a town survived war devastaion and now it's a fascinating place with artistic studios, galleries, clubs and pre-war architecture like Ortodox church and mikvah (Jewish ritual bath). During a trip you will find out about multicultural society which lived here before Second World War and why people were building shrines at the backyards of their houses.

TIME: time in Warsaw is GMT+2. We use 24 hours clock. 11 means 11am, 23 means 11pm, noon is 12:00, midnight is 0:00 (or sometimes, wrongly, 24:00), etc.

POLISH SIM-card: you can easily get one at one of numerous offices of four Polish mobile operators – Plus, Orange, T-Mobile, Play. Starter pack prices start from 9 PLN (approx. 2 EUR) including calls and internet data. The mobile operators shops in the area are listed below. Plus, Al. 6. POLISH LANGUAGE Polish is a difficult language – too difficult for the large majority of people living in this country, some Members of Parliament included. Normally the foreigners are not expected to speak it. Anyway, if you insist, be my guest:

Some Polish words are of Latin origin. Most are not. Many people in Warsaw speak at least basic English. Some speak Russian or German.

7. MONEY: CREDIT CARDS / ATMs (CASH DISPENSERS)

Most major credit cards are accepted at hotels, shops, restaurants, cafés, etc. There are ATMs / cash dispensers (in Polish BANKOMAT) on every prominent street in the centre.

MONEY EXCHANGE

Polish currency is zloty – code PLN. If you want to change money (cash), go to places marked KANTOR. The nearest one from your hotel is about a hundred metres away at 59 Aleje Jerozolimskie, 50 m East from the Marriott. Current exchange rates: http://www.nbp.pl/kursy/kursya.html

Exchange desks located at the airport, the railway station or at hotels usually have not so good exchange rates. Some exchange desks, like the ones at ul. Krucza 49, ul. Piękna 11, are open around the clock.

To exchange money in Poland you don’t have to show you passport or ID, like in some other countries.

The Polish National Bank exchange rates as of September 26, 2015; the exchange desks charge a bit more when selling, and they pay you a bit less when you want to sell.

8. PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The Warsaw public transport system is reliable, timetables included.

General information about public transport (in Polish, English, German, and Russian) in Warsaw: http://ztm.waw.pl/. You can download an app with public transport and schedule in English (Android, iOS) called JakDojade, you can plan your trip also on a website www.jakdojade.pl

You can buy tickets for public transport at metro stations, some bus and tram stops, some news-stands.

IMPORTANT: on entering a metro station, a bus or a tram please validate the ticket, putting it the magnetic stripe down into a validating machine;

Ticket prices: - a ticket valid for 20 minutes costs 3.40 PLN - a ticket valid for 75 minutes costs 4.40 PLN - a ticket valid for 24 hours costs 15 PLN - a weekend ticket valid from Friday 19:00 till Monday 8:00 costs 24 PLN.

Bicycles for rent Register at www.veturilo.waw.pl and use over 1000 bikes are ride for free up to 20 mins. One of bike stand you can find just next to the Marriott.

Metro There are two metro lines in Warsaw (the second one opened in 2015). All festival venues are walking distance from the metro station Centrum. It takes approximately 2 minutes to get to the next station by metro.

Trams Recommended in the centre at all times.

Buses On several streets they use special bus lanes, which means buses (and taxis) move faster than other vehicles during rush hour.

POPULAR POLISH DISHES

barszcz [bar-sh-ch] – beetroot soup, often with dumplings

bigos [BEE-gos] – cabbage stew, usually with small pieces of sausage meet, mushrooms, etc.

chłodnik [KHLOD-nick]– cold soup (in two versions: beetroot or cucumber), served during the summer;

chrzan [khshan] – horse radish

gołąbki [go-WOMB-kee]– cabbage leaves, stuffed with meat, rice, etc.

kapusta kiszona [ka-POO-stah kee-SHO-nah] – sauerkraut

kaszanka [kah-SHAN-kah] – black sausage; usually served fried;

kiełbasa [kehl-BA-sah] – sausage; they come in many sizes and colours, with and without garlic, some are hot or grilled;

kotlet schabowy [CAUGHT-let skha-BO-vi]– pork cutlet; short form is just “schabowy”;

ogórek kiszony [oh-GOO-reck kee-SHO-ni]– pickled cucumbers; the proper ones are sold from the barrels; home-made are the best; try Bazar Polna, ul. Polna 13, in the basement;

pierogi [phe-RO-ghi]– dumplings (stuffed with minced meat, cabbage, mushrooms, etc.)

placki ziemniaczane [PLAT-ski zyem-nya-TCHA-neh] – potato pancakes

smalec [SMAH-let’s]– pig or goose grease; the proper one should have cracklings;

śledź [sh’LEDH’] – (marinated) herring; śledź po japońsku is Japanese style herring with hard boiled egg, green peas and mayonnaise – anyone seen it in Japan?

żurek [ZHOO-reck]– sour soup (usually with hard-boiled egg and sausage).

LOTOS, ul. Belwederska 2, tel. 22 841 13 01 – the 1970s preserved in their original glory – the socialist Polish gastronomy as some of us remember it; the restaurant entrance is from ul. Belwederska, the bar entrance from ul. Chełmska;

POD SAMSONEM, ul. Freta 3/5 (2 mins walk north from the Barbican, Old Town), tel. 22 831 17 88 – open 10-23; Jewish and Polish food; one of my favourites; good value for money; unpretentious old school;

PRZYSMAK, ul. Lwowska 11 (in the yard, left); home cooking place, established in 1956; open only for lunch 12-17; menu only in Polish;

Take bus 175, which stops in front of the Marriott and go West

3 stops to: DOPPIO, ul. Gałczyńskiego 3, tel. 22 622 1330; open from 13:00; www.doppio-cuore.pl; informal and friendly Italian restaurant, hidden near Nowy Świat (Gałczyńskiego is parallel, from the side of even numbers of Nowy Świat – between Foksal and Ordynacka;

6 stops to: ANTRAKT CAFE, Plac Piłsudskiego 9 (Opera House building), tel. 22 827 64 11 – open noon till lateł stylish interior; place popular with actors, who play in the National Theatre (same building); try hot żubrówka with apple juice;

EATING AT NIGHT – after 11pm it can be a problem

Many shops with food and drink open 24/7. Also most kebab places are open till late. Gas stations sell very basic food & drinks around the clock.

SZPILKA CAFÉ BAR, Plac Trzech Krzyży 18, tel. 22 628 91 32 (don’t get confused – there is a bar named Szpulka next door), open almost around the clock; one time I discovered it’s closed, but it was six in the morning;

If you’re a VEGETARIAN (I’m not) you can try:

KROWARZYWA, ul. Marszałkowska 27/35 (accross the street from Luna Cinema), famous vegan burger joint, open 12-23;

VEGA, Al. Jana Pawła II 36C – open 12-20; vegetarian and vegan cuisine;

VEGABAR, ul. Oboźna 9 (near the Warsaw University) – open: Mon-Fri 10-20, Sat-Sun 12-20; vegetarian cuisine;

Vegetarian option of lunch menu is widely available at most restaurants.

...and now something completely unique BAR MLECZNY – Milk bar

Self-service restaurants, serving simple meals at very low prices. Typically Polish dishes like pierogi can be found there. The name (meaning “milk bar”) is misleading – in fact both parts of it are. Some dishes are based on milk, but that’s the only connection. No alcohol, no beer. BAMBINO, ul. Krucza 21 or PRASOWY, ul. Marszałkowska 10/16.

11. QUICK GUIDE TO POLISH DRINKING CULTURE

WÓDKA [VOOD-kah] – vodka

Poland is a vodka country. Here are some of the vodkas:

Dębowa – oak tree vodka;

dzięgielówka – angelica (herbal) vodka; rare & delicious!

fruit vodkas: Wiśniówka – cherry vodka; Żurawinówka – cranberry vodka Cytrynówka – lemon vodka, Jarzębiak – rowan-berry vodka; warning: don’t consume the rowan-berry fruit in any other form!

krupnik – honey vodka;

nalewka – tincture; a nice selection of tinctures can be found at Krakowski Kredens, level -1 of Złote Tarasy shopping centre;

orkisz – upscale pure vodka;

Soplica – available in several flavours; the quince (pigwa [PIG-vah]) flavour is my favourite;

spirytus rektyfikowany – 95% pure alcohol, the strongest commercially available alcohol on the planet; not served at gastronomic establishments; warning: never drink it straight!

śliwowica – plum vodka / slivovitz, can be very strong; the most famous one comes from Łącko [WON-tskoh], but it’s hard to get; warning: beginners definitely should NOT start with Passover Slivovitz (70% alcohol!);

winiak – well, it’s not a vodka, rather the missing link between vodka and cognac;

Wyborowa – the internationally best known Polish vodka; used to be white only, but now comes in several flavours;

Żołądkowa Gorzka – produced since 1950; has several flavours: mint, honey, bison grass, and czysta (pure) de luxe;

żubrówka – the world famous bison grass vodka; have it mixed with apple juice – the drink is named “szarlotka”[shar-LOT-kah], which also means apple pie, so make it clear you mean a drink when ordering;

... and a BEER country...

beer in Polish is PIWO [PEE-voh]

Polish people drink mostly the beers they know, coming from breweries situated in Poland like Lech, Tyskie, Żywiec, Warka, Królewskie to name a few. However, in the recent years many consumers became fed up with mass-produced beers. You can now buy a variety of Polish and international beers in various places. In the summer of 2013 a group of pubs created the Warsaw Beer Route (Warszawski Szlak Piwny), marking the new beginning of the beer culture:

Spiskowcy Rozkoszy, ul. Żurawia 47 (the name means “Conspirators of Pleasure”, which is a title of the Jan Svankmajer film)

Kufle i Kapsle, ul. Nowogrodzka 25

Czeska Baszta, Al. 3 Maja at the crossing with Solec – literally under the bridge; tram stop Most Poniatowskiego); large selection of Czech beers from the tap and in bottles, beer snacks; the place is hard to find, but worth an effort;

Cuda na kiju, ul. Nowy Świat 6/12 (corner of Al. Jerozolimskie) in the former building of the Central Committee of United Workers Party of Poland)

If you would like to try a large variety of beers, multitap Piw Paw, ul. Żurawia 32/34, can be a choice.

WINO [VEE-noh] means WINE in Polish

HARENDA, Krakowskie Przedmieście 4/6, www.harenda.pl – one of the oldest pubs in town, founded in... 1991; the address is quite misleading – find Bank Millenium at the address and go down ul. Oboźna to turn left after 50 m; blues sessions every Tuesday;

IRISH PUB, ul. Miodowa 3, tel. 22 826 25 33 – open 11am till late; live music every day;

MIĘDZY NAMI CAFE, ul. Bracka 20, tel. 22 828 54 17 – the name (meaning “among us”) says it all; popular hang out; decent food;

POLE MOKOTOWSKIE – it’s not a place, it’s a universe in its own right. The Field of Mokotów is a large park with several pubs – in alphabetic order: BOLEK, LOLEK, MERLIN, TOLA, ZIELONA GĘŚ (The Green Goose); take Metro to Pole Mokotowskie or a taxi – about 20 zlotys from the Marriott; open till late; food;

HANGOUT AREAS

Plac Zbawiciela (Zbawiciela Square) - one of the most vibrant spots on Warsaw’s map, full of youngsters; locals call it Hipster’s Square. Try CHARLOTTE and PLAN B (North-East side), Karma Cafe (South-West side) and the old school CORSO bar (North-West side), the only place I know where where you can smoke indoors!

Poznańska Street - 300m away from Marriott hotel you can find another buzzy spot at Warsaw hangout map. Recommended places: POLONEZ, BEIRUT Hummus & Drink Bar, KRAKEN Bar, TEL AVIV Café.

Powiśle area – especially surroundings of BUW (Warsaw University Library) with CZUŁY BARBARZYŃCA at ul. Dobra 31, SOLEC 44 (the name is also the address; upscale food, by the way), SAM restaurant at ul. Lipowa 7A, KAFKA Café at ul. Oboźna 3, and the one not-to-be-missed: PKP POWIŚLE at ul. Leona Kruczkowskiego 3B – former railway ticket counter trasformed int one of the most popular Warsaw’s hangouts.

Pawilony – if you want to mingle with locals there is a row of cosy bars located behind Nowy Świat street. Walk through the gateway of Nowy Świat 22.

13. COFFEE TIME

CAFÉ BLIKLE, ul. Nowy Świat 53 open 8 till late, since 1869; the most famous and oldest in town;

GREEN CAFFE NERO (previously Green Coffee), several locations in the centre: two at the railway station, one at Zlote Tarasy shopping centre, one at ul. Marszałkowska 84/92 (near Novotel Centrum), several others all open 7-23; a self-service coffee bar with sandwiches, muffins, etc.; good coffee;

And yes, we do have STARBUCKS.

KLUBOKAWIARNIE – half way between cafés and music clubs

Hangout Warsaw style. These are usually small cafés serving coffee & food during the day, which turn into alternative bars/clubs at night till early morning hours.

BAR STUDIO, The Palace of Culture;

CAFE KULTURALNA, The Palace of Culture, the hall of Dramatyczny Theatre; WFF Festival Club; popular hangout with live music;

REGENERACJA, ul. Puławska 61; popular hang out, often attended by film people;

WRZENIE ŚWIATA (Boiling World), ul. Gałczyńskiego 7; books by Polish and foreign reporters are available to buy or read while drinking your coffee.

SASKA KĘPA – southern Praga. Try out Francuska Street and numerous cafés out there and don’t miss Towarzyska Café at ul. Zwyciezców 39.
