GOODNews Story!Captain Matt Wood, USMCRM4L Representative, San Antonio, TX

Recently the Marine for Life Network and the San Antonio Marine for Life (M4L) Representative helped a retired Marine Colonel in landing a position with Booz

Allen as a Strategy Consultant in Texas.

Col Russ Mantzel retired in June 2018 and relocated to San Antonio, TX. Col Mantzel applied to numerous positions with various employers over several months, including Booz Allen, but had not made any headway.

The M4L Representative in San Antonio connected with Col Mantzel to discuss his career goals, develop a plan of action and coached him in how to best adopt appropriate business language and attitudes while still retaining the drive and cultural excellence that distinguishes Marines. The M4L Representative connected Col Mantzel with the Hill Country Metroplex Marines (a key networking entity in the San Antonio area), the USO Pathfinder Program, and various other network contacts for targeted organizations such as Booz Allen, Amazon, Caterpillar, Valero, and CACI.

After coaching and preparation by the M4L Representative, Col Mantzel interviewed with Booz Allen in July. Near the end of July, Booz Allen offered Col Mantzel a position as a Strategy Consultant for an Air Force project at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. This offer included his preferred location at a salary commensurate with his experience and ability. Col Mantzel was very satisfied and excited and started in August.

Col Mantzel is extremely pleased with the assistance he received from the M4L Network and the M4L Representative.

What can we learn from Col Mantzel:

1. Join the Marine for Life Network and connect with a local M4L Representative2. Visit your installation’s Transition Readiness office and talk to a Personal and Professional Development Advisor who can provide career counseling and a range of transition workshops

Still searching for more in-depth assistance with transition? Contact your installation’s Transition Readiness staff. Join the Marine for Life Network by completing the form. You can also follow the Marine for Life Network on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

Tips for Networking During the Holidays!

Networking during the holidays has the potential of paying big dividends. Why? Well if

you think about it, people are usually in a much better mood during the holiday season, and therefore may be open to more casual conversation than normal. In fact, the holiday season is full of social events, which can provide excellent opportunities for face-to-face networking. With that in mind, here are a few tips to consider, to help maximize your networking efforts while you’re out socializing during the holiday season:

Holiday GatheringsWhether you’re at on office holiday party, or a social event with friends and family, chances are there will be folks in attendance that you’ve never met before. Instead of solely socializing with your immediate circle of friends, consider taking advantage of the opportunity to introduce yourself to people you don’t know. After all, isn’t that what networking is all about – getting to know people you don’t. By doing so, you’re literally building your network, and that one new person you meet could possibly pay big dividends for you later on in the future!

Don’t just talk about yourself, get to know other peopleStrong networks are built on strong relationships. Be careful not to spend too much time talking just about yourself, what you do, what you want to do, etc. While you certainly should speak to your personal interests (so people can get to know you), you also want to ask open-ended questions that foster engaging conversation in which the other party can actively participate. Be flexible with your conversation and really pay attention to the other parties involved, this will help you to develop better relationships with the people within your network.

VolunteerAside from social gatherings, the holiday season is also full of volunteer opportunities. Organizations and various non-profits are always looking for people to lend a hand (i.e. Toys for Tots). You may even find volunteer opportunities at your local Marine Corps Installation. Regardless of where you volunteer your time, the opportunity to network will certainly always present itself. Think about it, by volunteering your time you’re destined to meet new people, thus growing your personal/professional network. Plus, if you’re volunteering, you’re probably doing something that has significance to you personally – meaning you’re likely to have something in common with the folks you meet (a great recipe for engaging conversation).

The United States Secret Service is a federal law

enforcement agency with headquarters in Washington, D.C., and more than 150 offices throughout the United States and abroad. Established in 1865 solely to suppress the counterfeiting of U.S. currency, today the Secret Service is mandated by Congress to carry out the integrated missions of protection and investigation.

The US Secret Service is a strong advocate for, and maintains a firm commitment to employing our U.S. veterans. These admired and respected men and women upload many of the same values that are a critical part of the Secret Service’s core values and overall culture.

There is a powerful reason why veterans are admired, respected and sought out to fill important roles in their communities. Aside from leadership skills, veterans possess valuable intangible traits such as loyalty, dependability, enthusiasm, initiative, integrity, and judgment. These are the exact characteristics the Secret Service looks for in a qualified candidate, and they remain dedicated to finding and hiring individuals that not only exhibit such traits, but consistently apply them in all that they do.

Veterans and eligible family members may be given preference during the hiring process when applying for U.S. Secret Service positions. For more information on the vast career opportunities within the Secret Service, you can visit www.secretservice.gov or contact Retired Marine and U.S. Secret Service Talent Acquisition Specialist, Elmer Pagaragan at 202-712-0642.

transitional housing for wounded veterans and their families.

Operation Homefront is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive — not simply struggle to get by — in the communities they have worked so hard to protect. For over fifteen years, Operation Homefront has provided programs that offer: RELIEF (through Critical Financial Assistance and transitional housing programs), RESILIENCY (through permanent housing and caregiver support services) and RECURRING FAMILY SUPPORT programs and services throughout the year that help military families overcome the short-term bumps in the road so they don’t become long-term chronic problems. Operation Homefront has consistently earned high ratings from leading charity rating services, including Charity Navigator, which gave OH 4 Stars for 11 consecutive years for superior service and accountability. At Operation Homefront, 92 percent of expenditures goes directly toward delivering programs and services to the military families who need it most.

Helping military families gain long-term stability is a specific concern of Operation Homefront.

Homes on the Homefront awards mortgage-free homes, impacting veteran families for

why we formed Hearts of Valor.

Operation Homefront supports every military family member. OH host a gala each year that recognizes extraordinary military kids and host multiple Homefront

Questions about college? Contact the experts:Ms. Deborah Marconda: [email protected] (Leadership Scholar Program Manager)Ms. Patricia A. Hackett: [email protected] (Education Services Manager)

The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, also known as the “Forever GI Bill,” was signed into law on August 17, 2017, and brings significant changes to Veterans’ education benefits over the next few years. Most enhance or expand education benefits for Veterans, service members, families and survivors.

These provisions go into effect immediately:

• The 15-year time limit for using Post-9/11 G.I. Bill benefits is eliminated for those Veterans who left active duty on or after January 1, 2013, as well as qualifying dependents

• Reservists who had eligibility under the Reserve Educational Assistance program (REAP) and who previously lost their eligibility under the program’s sunset provision will have their service credited toward the Post-9-11/G.I. Bill program

• Certain work-studies will be permanently authorized. Previously, these had to be re-authorized by Congress every few years

• The VetSuccess on Campus program will become available to students across the country• The VA will work to help Veterans more clearly identify schools that offer them priority enrollment

Changes coming:

• Changes to Licensing and Certification Charges• Changes to Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance• Changes to Transfer of Benefits (TEB)• Consolidation of Benefit Levels• Informing Schools about Beneficiary Entitlement

“Leadership, Achieving Life-Changing SUCCESS From Within”

SgtMaj McMichael delivers an outstanding

depiction of ten leadership principles he found valuable during his life before, during and after the Marine Corps. The ten principles he centers the book around are:

1. Walk the walk2. Practice dinner table values3. Impress yourself first4. Rely on intelligence over emotion5. Prepare so you can prosper6. Lead from the heart7. Rebuild what you tear down8. Give power to your people9. Expect excellence10.Foster functional leadership

His main message centers on always setting a

positive example. His example exemplifies bringing out the best in not only yourself, but bringing out the best in those around you. There is also a firm foundation in family values. He frequently refers to things he didn’t learn about leadership from his mother and sister, he learned in the Marine Corps.

My favorite excerpt comes from chapter 10, “We nickel-and-dime education. We are

spending billions of dollars on the latest technology for jets, tanks, guns, and weapons, but we aren’t educating the men and women who have to use that technology, fly those planes, maneuver those tanks, fire those guns, and use those weapons. Why bother spending the money on the world’s most sophisticated war-fighting equipment if we aren’t going to educate our people well enough to use it all.” I found this to be straight talk, and also believe it relates to educating and preparing Marines for their transition to being leaders after the Marine Corps.

Corps from 1999 to 2003. He was also the first Senior Non-Commissioned Officer for Allied Command
