Five Exchange Students Spend Time at CAK

This fall, five Guatemalan foreign exchange students, Raul, Jose, Rodrigo, Selena, and Cynthia, attended CAK High School. The students quickly became a part of the CAK family, attending sporting events, café p.m., and other activities. In the end, the students from Guatemala reminded CAK of what it means to be hospitable, to love (including holding those we love accountable for their actions), and what it means to be the body of Christ to the broken.

On the students’ last night in Knox-ville, the host families held a “Despedida” - a traditional Hispanic going away party. There was plenty of food, laughter, and even some salsa dancing. In the host families’ hospital-ity, the Guatemalans’ gratitude and joy, and the CAK students’ acceptance of those who are diff erent, Christ was truly present. Church happens when what were once reasons for distrust -- things like race, culture, and language -- become reasons for celebration. In the appreciation of the Guatemalans’ life among us, CAK participated in the radical hospitality of a Savior who came to bind up the broken hearted, set the captives free, and create a home for the foreigner.

In CAK’s pursuit of the Beloved

Community, it is my prayer that

those who are diff erent will always

be welcomed amongst our student

body. The students who spent the fall

Hoff man Leads CAK to State Title CAK's Varsity girls have been named Tennessee Class A-AA state soccer champions. Brittany Hoff man, who is committed to Samford University, scored both goals to lead CAK to a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame (Chattanooga) in the state fi nal. Hoff man's match-winning strike was a 40-yarder with less than two minutes remaining, which broke a 1-1 deadlock. She was named the tournament MVP.

Students Helping Kids in Haiti CAK students have really stepped up in response to the Haiti earthquake relief eff orts. The Elementary School is collecting supplies, while the Middle and High Schools are busy raising funds. All eff orts support an orphanage about 40 miles outside of Port Au Prince, Haiti. More details online at CAKwarriors.com.

Right: CAK Elementary students collect and sort supplies to send to the orphan-age in Haiti, with the help of One Vision International. The school’s eff orts were featured on WATE-6 News, and as a result, schools from Ohio and Virginia are sending supplies our way. In addition, CAK students have already collected over $7,000 after the earthquake (as of January 21) and hope to continue to raise funds for the children of Haiti.

Reception for Former Teacher,

Mrs. Rheba Akins

A reception will be held in the High School Commons on Saturday, February 20 for Mrs. Rheba Akins. Mrs. Akins taught 2nd grade at CAK for 26 years. She had to take a medical leave in the Fall of 2005 due to spasmotic dysphonia. After two years on disability and little success with treatment, Mrs. Akins decided that she could not return to the classroom.

We would like to honor Mrs. Akins and thank her for the years she committed to teaching the little ones she loved.

Drop by anytime on February 20 between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm to say hello. Mrs. Akins would love to see all her former students, parents, teachers, and colleagues.

If you would like to send a card or letter, please mail it to the attention of Jane

Williams, 600 Academy Way, Knoxville, TN 37923. You may also bring your card or letter when you come, or email [email protected].

The girls were regular season KISL league champions with a record of 16-0. They went on to win the KISL Tournament with an undefeated season, making that record 19-0! Two players, Kati e Storie and Lauren Petersen, were voted to the All-League Team. Ashleigh Marti n and Kaycee Heitzman were voted to the All-Tournament Team. Kati e Storie was also voted MVP.

“I would att ribute our success to the players’ hard work and commitment during the regular season and during the ‘off ’ season,” says Coach Storie. “I would like to thank the very supporti ve parents of the gold team! We could not have done this without them.”

Sharing Our School & Our God with Students from AbroadA Photo Collage with our New Friends!

If you are interested in being a host family next Fall, commit this to the Lord in prayer now. Hosting a Guatemalan teen in your home for two months will bring great joy and challenge to your life in every way. Above all else, the desire to host a student should be for the purpose of loving them in Jesus’ name and living the gospel before them daily. It requires a strong commitment on the part of the parents to be involved with the student and to pray for the student. For information, contact Susan Stanford at [email protected].

CAK “Runs” Straight to First Boys’ State Golf Championship From Knoxville News-Sentinel, 10-14-09

It wasn’t on the links that changed the course for Christian Academy of Knoxville’s season. It was on the track. After a sub-district tournament, boys’ golf coach Hank Fennell sat his players down and talked to them about not being focused. The punish-ment was running on the track, some got two miles, others four.

“That got the message across,” Fennell said. “We started to play the way we knew we could. Since then we had the best three weeks of practice.”

And it culminated at the Class A/AA tournament. The Warriors won the school’s fi rst boys’ state golf team championship by beating defending champion Christ Presbyterian Academy by 21 strokes at Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro. It was a little shaky on the front nine after CAK lost eight strokes from the 17-shot lead entering the second round. It all changed on the back nine.

“We had three or four doubles (bogeys) on the front side and got our bad holes out of the way and started making par and a few birdies,” said Fennell, the fourth-year coach who graduated from CAK in 2003.

CAK fi nished at 612 with CPA second at 633.

Fennell said the title was unexpected considering CAK fi nished second in the district tournament after a poor start and added it was fortunate to advance to the regional tournament. Kory Webb of CAK shot 3-over-par 75 Wednesday and the sophomore fi nished second at 2-over 146... CAK junior Lee Whitehead, who shot 78 to fi nish sixth at 150, said the team started to focus and work on the mental game after the run on the track...

CAK junior Anderson Payne (80) tied for 13th at 155. Adam

Cronan (89), a sophomore was at 172 and freshman Taylor Payne (78) fi nished at 173, to complete CAK’s scoring.

$20,000 -- Tuition Assistance• $15,000 -- Promethean Boards• $10,000 -- Capital Campaign•

Many thanks to the committee chair, David

Clothier, and the committee members and event volunteers who made the tournament possible. Thanks also to HT Hackney for their continued support as a presenting sponsor of the Warrior ShootOut.
