Light fantastic

If you’ve ever felt that a room is boring, bland and lifeless, the chances are that it’s not your furnishings that are to blame, but your lighting. Poor lighting flattens and dulls, while clever lighting can give va va voom to the simplest of decorative schemes. Lighting isn’t just a practical thing, it’s psychological, too, reinforcing our sense of security, comforting us, and sending out signals of welcome, vitality and warmth. Because of this, it’s worth ensuring that any lighting scheme is truly flexible, adapting at the touch of a switch to your mood, the time of day, and the way in which you use each room.

If possible, you should design your lighting scheme at the earliest stages, when planning how you will use the room and where the furniture will be grouped. Once you have worked out how you will live in the space, you can ask yourself where you will want light,

how much you will require at what times, and what effects you wish to create. ‘When lighting any room it’s essential to design a scheme so that light comes from more than one source or direction,’ says Sally Storey, design director of John Cullen Lighting. ‘You can layer lighting effects in the same way that an interior designer layers fabrics and textiles.’

Professionals divide light into four main types: general light, which gives good overall lighting; task light, to brightly illuminate a specific area such as a worktop or reading corner; accent lighting, which highlights features such as pictures, shelving or architectural detailing; and atmosphere lighting, which sets the mood, from a dramatic mix of light and shade to mellow pools of light in different areas of the room. Most rooms require three or four of these types, provided by a combination of downlights or spotlights on

the ceiling, track lights, floor-level or wall-mounted uplighters, wall washers, floor or table lamps, and special shelf or display lighting.

Of course, we can’t all start from scratch when redesigning our lighting, so if you’re looking for a quick upgrade on a budget, you could just spend a few pounds replacing main light switches with dimmers, and plug in a selection of table or floor lamps at strategic points, enabling you to layer the lighting and emphasise special features.

With these fundamentals in mind, forward planning and creative thinking are the keys to designing a lighting scheme. Think of it as painting with light, creating washes and filling in with highlights and lowlights. Each room is your blank canvas, but with imagination and a little effort it can become a work of art.

Lighting can be used to emphasise good points or disguise problem areas, to highlight colour, texture and form, and to divide, unify or open up a space. In short, lighting can make or break a room, says Katherine Sorrell

LIGHTING ROOM BY ROOMLiving rooms Ideally, install a range of lighting options, from bright reading lights to softer lights for relaxing and entertaining. You could also highlight shelving, pictures or a coffee table.

Dining rooms A pendant hung over a dining table creates an intimate atmosphere. Fix wall lights at a lower level – more appropriate when sitting.

Kitchens Adjustable spotlights, on tracks or in the ceiling, are practical for general light, with lights mounted beneath wall cabinets to illuminate worksurfaces.

Bathrooms Combine crisp, bright lights, in the form of ceiling downlighters, for an energetic feeling, with softer lights, such as wall washers, for a relaxing bath.

Bedrooms Require subtle, flattering lighting, although a good light for mirrors is essential. For bedside reading, wall-mounted lights free up space on a bedside table.

Something to Smile AboutWe expect all celebrities to have a gleaming white dazzling Hollywood smile. The effect gives a younger and more attractive look and is the very least you expect from someone in the limelight, with the funds available to have the work done. But, thanks to the advancements in cosmetic dentistry, perfectly straight, brilliant white and pearly teeth are both available and affordable for ordinary people too.

Cosmetic dentistry is a popular that has taken hold here after initially being more prevalent in America. With a reputation for poor and unattractive teeth, the UK has been behind in the smile stakes for a long time, but now it seems to be catching up.

It’s amazing how much of an effect our teeth can have on our confidence, and it’s a sad fact that many of us shy away from the camera and try to conceal crooked, damaged or stained teeth when we laugh.

Over time our teeth naturally become more yellow, and damage from years of smoking and drinking coffee, tea and red wine, leaves the teeth looking far from gleaming. Indeed your teeth might even be very healthy but yellowing stops them from looking that way. With tooth decay, tartar build-up and fillings chief among the other culprits for

discolouration, an unattractive and ageing result is inevitable.

One of the most effective and affordable treatments to address this is teeth whitening.

Most dental practices offer two types of whitening, either laser or professional home kits. Both procedures require the use of a bleaching agent that is peroxide-based.

Carried out in the surgery, laser teeth whitening works with a light-activated bleaching gel. Taking between one and two hours, the treatment involves the mouth and gums being protected, while the agent is applied directly to the teeth. This results in immediate whitening up to ten shades lighter.

Pain and sensitivity are common side effects, but usually subside within 48 hours. Nasty burns to the lips, mouth and gums have been reported, but this is uncommon and only occurs when the areas have not been properly protected. That is why it is so important to always have the procedure conducted by a qualified practitioner.

For a tailored professional home whitening kit, your dentist will create a mould of your teeth, before making custom whitening trays for you to use at home with a whitening gel. Home kits contain a far less potent

level of peroxide and therefore irritation is unlikely but of course the results won’t be as dramatic either. The length of time that you need to use these for varies considerably depending upon the kit, so always follow your dentist’s advice.

Teeth whitening can last between a few months and three years. The costs vary greatly too, so it is vital that you receive a thorough consultation to establish your needs and expectations before going ahead.

Whitening won’t fix everything though and if your teeth need some extra attention, you may need dental crowns or veneers. Crowns protect damaged and cracked teeth by sitting over the tooth and covering the entire outer surface. Commonly known as caps, the crowns both improve the look of the teeth and preserve their functionality. Prices range from £300 to £1000 per crown.

Veneers are less invasive and are often a better cosmetic choice where the tooth is sound, since they can disguise all manner of problems. The wafer-thin laminates of tooth-coloured material are ‘cemented’ to the front surface of teeth to create perfect pearly whites. Expect to pay between £300 and £1500 per veneer.

Invest in your teeth and give yourself something to truly smile about.

When Cheryl Harris took over Top Turnout in April 2007 she had no idea that her “ideal hobby job” would grow and expand into the company it has become in only four years.

The company provides an Equestrian Laundry Service to horse and has seen a rapid expansion from its humble beginnings in a converted stable unit.

Cheryl has built up the business through hard work and attention to detail and is now proud to be able to move into bigger and better premises at Lady Heyes Craft Centre, from where she will be able to continue to provide horse rug laundry and repair services.

Top Turnout’s little silver van has become a familiar sight as it travels each day around the local roads, providing a FREE collection and delivery service.

All items are washed and re-proofed in modern computer controlled laundry machines using industry standard cleaning and proofing products following manufacturers’ recommendations and are air dried before being repaired, if necessary, to a very high standard using sophisticated modern sewing machines. Cheryl prides herself on her ability to rise to the challenge of repairing trashed and unsightly rugs and will always do her best to get valuable rugs back in action as soon as possible.

Horse rugs and riding equipment represent a huge financial outlay for horse owners and regular investment in maintenance and repair not only extends the life of the equipment but also helps to maintain standards of hygiene for horse and rider alike.

Keith Hughes started the Easy PC Store almost ten years ago after spotting a gap in the local market. He started out in a small shop/unit in Christie Street, but very quickly outgrew that as he was swamped with work and had to move to bigger premises in Moorfield Road. Its great location makes it so accessible, with parking right outside the shop and also great for disabled access.

The name sort of says it all really… Keith makes all things computer related really EASY for you. They sell a huge range of new and refurbished desktops and laptops, as well as a great range of accessories and computer peripherals. If you buy a PC or a laptop from a big national store for example, you buy a box that you take home, unpack and sit in front of it for several hours updating it and configuring the antivirus etc., With The Easy PC Store this is all done for you - so you can plug it in and use it straight away AND more than likely it will be cheaper too! There is no high pressure selling and Keith will always give an honest answer. For example, if a pc/laptop is not worth spending money on Keith will say so, even if you do not replace it with him. You’ll never feel you’ve been given misleading advice.

We have first-hand experience of this great service ourselves. We did a little bit of research as to the

spec of business PC we wanted – went to Keith with our requirements, he gave us a GREAT price (more than a hundred quid cheaper than any other quote we’d had!!) and the very next day our shiny new PC was hard at work in Local Mags HQ. We’ve also had a couple of laptops repaired (and one had been down a flight of stairs…). So don’t always head to the faceless big stores, it’s worth, as ever, keeping our Halton pounds local and try in The Easy PC Store first.

Most people are aware that he can fix pretty much everything for you, but did you know he also offers a full business/home networking service too! One particular service that can help you in times of crisis is data recovery – this means that if for example you spill something on your laptop (I have done this a couple of times…don’t ask) Keith can recover all the data on your machine for you. As well as desktop and laptop repairs, Keith can also fix games consoles too!

I asked Keith if he had any plans for the future, and he said ‘to keep our customers happy and continue to offer a friendly efficient and prompt service at the right price’ – I love that… what more could you ask for?

The Easy PC Store... the small store with the big reputation.

Easy as a PC...

A Break from the routine in Breckenridge

We’ve been going skiing for years, first as a couple and then as a family when our two sons arrived. France and Italy have been our usual destinations and, although we can hardly claim to have done every resort in Europe, we definitely felt it was time for a change. We looked at Canada, but at the times that we tend to go in midwinter it is absolutely freezing there; I like a bit of extreme skiing but that is more like an exercise in survival. Finally we hit upon Breckenridge.

Breckenridge is in Colorado in the USA. It is a very high resort at around 10,000 feet and the mountains around it rise to 15,000 feet, but it is also a long way south. This means that there is good snow from November through to April but the temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day. You can ski in a tee shirt with your jacket open and be comfortably warm. The skiing is fantastic too. There are 2,400 acres of skiable terrain and 155 trails; you could never really ski all of them in a fortnight. Over a third of the terrain is rated as expert but there really is something for everyone,

masses of intermediate runs and the easy kids’ runs are really well thought out; they run through forest trails and over bridges and turn a morning’s skiing into a mini adventure.

If you ARE feeling adventurous you should try out the Imperial Chairlift, the highest in North America at 13,000 feet, which gives you access to some truly hair raising trails. Breckenridge is incredibly well run; all the lifts and all the trails are open all of the time and the pristine snow is piste bashed to within an inch of its life. Perhaps the managers from some of the European destinations should go and see how they should really run a ski resort.

Breckenridge has a lot to offer when you’re not on the slopes too. The town was originally established during the gold rush but, unlike other such places, it did not become a ghost town when the gold ran out. The Victorian buildings in the old town have been perfectly maintained, giving it plenty of character without even a hint of Disneyland. There is no shortage of places to spend your money either,

with over 100 bars and restaurants and plenty of shops. The food is what you would expect in America: big portions, top quality ingredients and good value. There are some top hotels in Breckenridge (presumably with top prices to go with them) but most of the accommodation is in modern condominiums. We had a two bedroom one with a large, well-appointed living area, a kitchen and two ensuites. It was nice enough to live in full time, but the commute to work would be a pain.

If you get tired of the slopes for a day, hire a car and you can enjoy some spectacular scenery. Better still, the upmarket resorts of Vail and Aspen are less than an hour away. Aspen in particular is a real eye opener, a bit like Monte Carlo with snow. There is a real gold rush ghost town you can visit too and you can see some of the herds of buffalo that are beginning to repopulate the Rockies with plenty of support from the park rangers.

There are only two downsides to a skiing holiday in Breckenridge; one is the twelve hour flight with a 90 mile transfer at the American end, the other is the cost, particularly if you go at peak season. But if you can live with these two things then I strongly recommend it.

There’s nothing more satisfying than a nice pastry tart when the weather outside is frightful. This one, with smoked bacon and egg could even make a delicious alternative to a cooked breakfast.

True Winter Scents...There’s no escaping the fact that the winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden, sometimes even a bit gloomy. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But don’t forget that one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant, especially when I’m out in the garden. So at this time of year, think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now, often in pride of place. The Witch Hazels or Hamamelis are one of my favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual oriental-looking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery

flowers on bare branches they look stunning and provided they are kept adequately moist during drier weather they should thrive, especially if you have an acidic soil. If not, they also look good in large tubs such as half-barrels. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset – sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. For best results, ensure the roots are just moist at all times and position the shrub somewhere that you can see as well as smell it. Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy.Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another great shrub for winter. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow coloured multi-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s

quite slow growing and doesn’t need to have a huge amount of space allocated to it. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display. If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves which are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. Again, it can do well in a really large tub or half barrel – for this I would suggest a loam-based John Innes type compost mixed with about 30% loam-free multi-purpose compost to ensure that drainage remains good.

The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer flowering plant, but go for varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and the bright pink, trumpet-shaped flowers not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down.Mahonias with their holly-like leaves can be a trifle spiky but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eye-catching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for right through from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Their only downside is their leaves which can be a real hazard if the mahonia has been planted in the wrong place –

once it grows the stems protrude in to nearby paths, seating areas or thoroughfares.Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering honeysuckles. They are not as showy as their summer flowering relations, but definitely a plant I’d hate to be without. The bare stems are covered with small white-cream flowers which produce a tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. Unlike the summer flowering species those that have winter appeal are not climbers, but informal shrubs. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter flowering shrub that I’d recommend you try.

It’s something every petrol head dreams of: Trading up from nothing to a super car by buying and selling a few motors in their spare time.

But instead of dreaming, one day last year I decided it was time to start doing it. The plan was a simple one – reinvest the cash from each sale into the next vehicle until I bought a 911.

And to give people a reason to help, once the Porsche was finally purchased it would be sold and all the money handed to charity.

Now it’s worth declaring early that as well as writing for this esteemed publication, I run trade publication Car Dealer Magazine, so have a few contacts in the motor trade that others who’ve tried this before didn’t have.

That assistance helped find the first cars to kick my challenge off. Both donated by dealers, I was handed the keys to a VW Golf MkIII by Motorpoint and M25 Audi gave us an S-reg A3.

Sadly the A3 wasn’t in the best of health and we were forced to sell it on eBay for a little less than we’d originally planned. It was bought by two motor traders for £790. The Golf didn’t hang around either – selling to a local man for £250 on eBay.

The second step involved spending £985.25 (including tax) on an 02-reg Ford Fiesta. This one hung around a little longer than we’d hoped and we were forced to reduce the price from an ambitious £2,500. That got the buyers interested and it was sold to a little old lady for £2,150.

Then came our masterstroke – the one that everyone remembers

– the Hyundai i10 football car. Made by a renowned car artist to celebrate the car manufacturer’s support of the World Cup, the i10 had artificial grass covering every panel and plastic grass seats, not to mention a giant football and goal posts grafted on to the exterior.

After a whirl of publicity, which saw it feature in The Daily Telegraph, countless local newspapers, websites around the world and even on the BBC news, we put it up for sale on eBay. It clocked up nearly 100 ‘watchers’ and eventually sold for £5,005 to a Hyundai dealer who planned to use it for publicity.

Buoyed by our success we contacted another manufacturer and scored another cracking deal. This time it was three Mazda MX-5s, one of which had been reversed into a lamppost at quite some speed.

The cars had been sourced by TV’s Mr Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer for Mazda’s 20 years of the MX-5 celebrations. All original MK1s, the two ‘good’ cars of our trio both needed MOTs and some parts before they were ready to sell.

A mechanic mate – who’d prove pivotal in our attempts to reach our target – took up the challenge and soon had the two good cars roadworthy. We let him keep the broken one as payment and sold the other two for a £2,220 profit.

Next up was a Mercedes CLK, which was bought for £6,000. The 03-model was a lovely spec and drove beautifully, but after four weeks sitting on my drive, when I tried to start it again the hood failed.

A trip back to mechanic Matt proved more than fruitful – not only did he have it fixed in a week, he also sold it … to his receptionist’s mum! A further £2,250 profit was banked.

Citroen then stepped into the fray with a C4 Grand Picasso. The 58-plater was on their fleet and we snapped it up for just £8,110 (including tax). Unfortunately it proved a bit sticky and we couldn’t find a buyer no matter how hard we tried.

Eventually a dealer offered to take it off our hands for £8,000, but instead of handing over cash we could simply take part exes off his site for the same value.

Knowing cheaper cars were easier to sell we picked a Volvo 940, a Skoda Fabia and a Renault Scenic. Not our smartest move, as one dealer pointed out ‘we’d now swapped one headache for three.’ He was right. We shifted them within a month but for a paltry combined profit of just £775.

That left £900 in the dealer’s bank account which we spent on a gold Ford Ka, which was sold in a week for £1,700.

Finally we’d reached the magic £10,000 mark and had enough to buy an early 996-shape 911. Eventually the right one popped up on Auto Trader and after negotiations I bought R97 RRK for £9,900.

We now plan to get our new baby fettled by Porsche and polished up ready for sale – and then eventually, after 13 trades and 15 months, we can hand over a fat cheque to BEN, the automotive industry charity we’ve been working so hard for.
