Support JAZZ -

the Music of Freedom!

And the melody still lingers on....Dear Members,

The Kimberly Thompson Group mesmerized audience members at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey on April 22, in the second of our Spring Concert Series. With Kimberly on drums, Mike Moreno on guitar and Taras Mateen on bass, it was one of the most electrically charged concerts CPFJ jazz fans have attended, and people are still raving about it. First up, providing a great start to the night and setting the tone for excellence were the talented members of the Central Dauphin High School Jazz Band under the direction of Matthew Cerresini. What an amazing and inspirational night! Many, many thanks to our volunteers at this event, and to the Shearer Family fund, R. Scott Shearer, for making our Spring Concert Series possible.

Welcome to our new CPFJ Board members! Tonya Mowery, Secretary, and Ben Goldsborough, Youth Committee Chair, were appointed by a unanimous vote at our April Board meeting, bringing fresh energy and talent to our organization!

Mark your calendars for the next concert! On May 20th, we feature the Warren Wolf Quartet at the Rose Lehrman Auditorium, Harrisburg Area Community College. Don’t miss it. Warren is a major voice in jazz, carrying on the traditions of master vibraphonists Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Hutcherson and Gary Burton. For those traveling from out of town, the Comfort Inn and the Staybridge Suites are offering special rates on May 20th. See the offer in this newsletter.

Sponsor and Corporate Members: If you cannot attend the Warren Wolf concert, PLEASE give your tickets to friends or family so we can keep our attendance up.

SPREAD THE WORD!! CPFJ’s Annual Youth Jazz Camp, under the direction of Dr. William Stowman, June 13-15 at Messiah College, has been generously underwritten by the Olewine Family Trust. Scholarship funding is provided by Penn National Insurance and The Hall Foundation for Harrisburg School District students who otherwise could not afford to attend the Camp. Cyrus Chestnut and Jonathan Ragonese, this year’s guest instructors will be working together with our regular instructors, Steve Meashey, Kirk Reese, and Jeff Stabley. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn improvisation and more!

JAZZFEST 2012, which we are co-producing this year with Millersville University’s Ware Center in Lancaster, will kick off on Friday evening, June 15th at the Marriott at Penn Square. Saturday, June 16th will feature a full day of workshops, jam sessions, and concerts at the Ware Center. Other events are planned for Sunday, June 17th as well. Read more in this newsletter.

Upcoming Jam Sessions: Our CPFJ co-sponsored jam sessions continue this year on The Patio at the Hilton Harrisburg on Thursday, May 24. Come and sit under the trees and stars, eat, drink, and support aspiring jazz musicians!

Members and Jazz fans, please, tell friends and family to join CPFJ and to attend concerts and jazz venues as often as possible.

Thanks to all of you who support CPFJ and the art of jazz!!

If you would like to contribute a review to Stuff We Like, please email a word file with the artist, CD, record company, and track listing, along with a review (250 words or less) to Paul Haidet at [email protected]. Put the phrase “stuff we like review” in the subject line of the email.

Bill CunliffeBlues and the Abstract Truth Take 2Resonance

LA-based pianist Bill Cunliffe is no slouch; he won the 1989 Theolonius Monk jazz piano award, and has worked with a host of artists, including Natalie Cole and the Clayton Brothers, among others. Still, though, one might think twice before trying to do a remake of the landmark 1961 Oliver Nelson album. After all, that band included Bill Evans, Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, and Roy Haynes, and introduced the world to standards such as “Stolen Moments” and “Yearnin” as well as charts that still sound fresh today. The personality and fame of the 1961 recording make for a daunting task in trying to create something that sounds new, but is also faithful to the original. Lucky for us that Cunliffe is up to the challenge. Sporting a band with the likes of Jeff Clayton on alto, Terrell Stafford on trumpet, and Andy Martin on trombone, as well as charts that actually add to the overall wonderfulness of the original, Cunliffe has scored a definite winner. He even threw in a pair of originals that are amazingly faithful to the spirit of Oliver Nelson. – PH

Tracks: Stolen Moments, Hoe Down, Cascades, Yearnin’, Butch and Butch, Teenie’s Blues, Port Authority, Mary Lou’s Blues.

We reserve the designation “core recording” for those masterpieces that, in our opinion, belong in the collections of all jazz lovers.

Core Recording:Freddie HubbardStraight LifeCTI 40th Anniversary Reissue

Freddie Hubbard was one of the most important trumpet voices in jazz. His recorded output spans the years 1960-2008, and includes such milestones as 1962’s “Hub Tones” and 1970’s “Red Clay”. Serious and heady stuff indeed. However, it is this 1971 recording that most critics point to as his best. Featuring just three extended improvisations (the track “Straight Life” clocks in at over 17 minutes), this album represents hard bop at its best. Hubbard is in excellent form, and the band includes no less than Joe Henderson on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, George Benson on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. You get the picture. The music skirts the balance between going out and maintaining form with an ease that is rarely heard. The tracks, particularly “Mr Clean,” have a serious groove, demonstrating that a marriage with other musical forms, such as soul, could work within the jazz idiom, and work spectacularly well. The 2011 reissue has that clean, Creed Taylor/Rudy van Gelder sound that made early 70s CTI records stand out. – PH

Artist SpotlightWarren Wolf

CPFJ’s guest artist this month is Warren Wolf, a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, MD who began playing at the age of three. He is now considered by jazz insiders as the next major voice on his chosen instrument – the vibraphone. Warren practiced mallet instruments (vibraphone/marimba), drums, and piano under the guidance of his father, Warren Wolf, Sr. His early experience spanned many genres of music – he studied classical music at Peabody Preparatory School, played ragtime piano and absorbed the music of jazz giants Bird, Miles,

Duke, Louie, Freddie, Clifford, Herbie, Oscar, and his biggest influence, vibraphonist Milt “Bags” Jackson. After graduating high school at the Baltimore School of the Arts in 1997, Warren headed north, enrolling in the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.

During his time at Berklee, Warren studied jazz vibraphonist Dave Samuels and became an active performer around the Boston area, gigging frequently on the vibes, drums and piano. After graduating in 2001, Warren became an active musician on the Boston scene and was hired as an instructor at Berklee. He moved back to Baltimore in 2005 to pursue his dream of becoming a full time performing musician. Warren has had great success, joining Rachael Price’s Group as her pianist, alto saxophonist Tia Fuller as her drummer, and is a member of the Donal Fox Group, Bobby Watson’s “Live and Learn” Sextet, Karriem Riggins “Virtuoso Experience”, and Christian McBride’s “Inside Straight” - with these groups Warren has traveled the world.

Warren’s first two CDs are on the Japanese M&I label - “Incredible Jazz Vibes” & “Black Wolf”. He was recently signed to Mack Avenue Records and released the eponymous debut CD “Warren Wolf” that features his mentor Christian McBride, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and pianist Peter Martin. We are very excited to present this rising jazz star to the audience in Central PA –come out and enjoy the Warren Wolf Quartet and the Mechanicsburg H. S. Jazz Ensemble in the beautiful Rose Lehrman Auditorium at Harrisburg Area Community College – it will be a night to remember!

What Postmodern Sounds LikeI am completely tired of jazz players getting pigeonholed by the pop or TV stars they play with. Branford Marsalis? Yeah, he’s Sting’s saxophone player. Kevin Eubanks? Isn’t he the guitar playing guy who led Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” Band? And then we come to Kimberly Thompson. We at The Vibe were equally guilty, billing her as “Beyonce’s drummer.” At the April concert on Sunday night, though, she proved herself to be anything but.

This band was so unique. I have been thinking about the concert for three straight days now, and still struggle to come up with the words to describe their overall sound. Let me start instead by deconstructing things and talking about each player individually.

Last summer, my family and I took a trip to a lovely little beach house on the Virginia coast. Things were wonderful, right up until the moment when the hurricane hit. The night before landfall, I stood on our deck at 3 am, mesmerized by the sound of the sea. It was inky black and I could not see anything, but I could hear what was going on. The ocean, so gentle a few days before, had changed. You could now hear the immense power contained in the waves. Every time I thought I had a handle on the rhythm, it shifted, leaving me feeling somewhat off balance. Last Sunday night, listening to Kimberly Thompson play, I could hear those waves again, in her immense store of power, creativity, ideas, and shifting rhythms.

If Kimberly provided a roiling foundation for the trio, Tarus Mateen was equally fascinating on bass. There was just as much energy in his lines, although his playing was deceptively light. I would compare him to Bill Evans’ great bassist Scott LaFaro in the early sixties, but, unlike LaFaro, he stayed down in the lower registers of the instrument. Deep low bass notes, coming out at breakneck speed, flitting and floating around the changes like a great big honkin’ 300-pound butterfly.

Then there’s Mike Moreno. Lots of reverb and echo on the guitar gave his sound the feel of wide open spaces; that kind of sound of the heartland that I often associate with Pat Metheny. His lines, though, were filled with space, bringing to mind 1980s-vintage John Abercrombie. The juxtaposition of space in Moreno’s lead with the sheer volume of notes in Mateen’s bass brought me back to the combination of Miles Davis’ trumpet and John Coltrane’s tenor in the late 50s.

So, what to make of this trio? Breathtakingly powerful drummer. Fascinatingly fast and light bassist. Spacious guitarist. Playing original tunes with titles like “Hollow Wind,” “Manhattan Tango,” and “Triple Ginger Snap,” they sounded thoroughly rooted in the present. However, they also played stuff from the history, including “Green Dolphin Street” and “Nardis,” giving those old standards a fresh new feel. This was definitely NOT the “modern” sound of bebop or hard bop. This was definitely NOT the “new thing” embodied in the free jazz movement. This was about as far as you could get from the neo classicists. No, this was something else, a new sound that married structure with freedom in an utterly unique way, leading me to conclude that jazz has finally entered the post-modern age of the 21st century.

I think I’ll have to check out a Beyonce concert sometime. She is, after all, Kimberly Thompson’s singer. -PAUL HAIDET
