Buick’s Smart Technology Can Lead to Better Drivers Kathryn Marinello has re- signed from GM’s Board of Direc- tors. Her retirement comes follow- ing Marinello’s appointment as president and chief executive officer of Hertz Global Holdings, effective Jan. 3, 2017. Marinello joined GM’s board in July 2009. “On behalf of the board and the entire GM family, I’d like to personally thank Kathy for her many contributions to our com- pany over the last seven years,” said GM CEO Mary Barra. “She brought us valuable in- sight and counsel in many areas, from automotive financing and IT to the voice of the customer. Kathy will definitely be missed, and we wish her all the best with her exciting new opportunity.” Marinello has served as senior advisor of Ares Management, a global asset manager, since re- joining that company in March 2014, said GM spokesman Dave Barnas. Before that, she served as chairman and chief executive officer of Stream Global Services, Inc., a global business process outsource service provider spe- cializing in customer relation- ship management. Marinello served as senior ad- visor and consultant at Provi- dence Equity Partners, a private equity firm, from June to August 2010. She served as chairman and chief executive officer of Ceridi- an Corporation, a human re- sources outsourcing company, from December 2007 to January 2010 and president and chief ex- ecutive officer from 2006 to 2007. Prior to joining Ceridian, Marinello spent 10 years at Gen- eral Electric Company, serving in a variety of senior roles, includ- ing president and chief executive officer of GM Fleet Services, a division of GE, from 2002 to 2006. Marinello Leaves GM Board, Named Hertz Global CEO The year was a busy one. In 2016, automobile products that had been talked about for years finally became a reality. GM’s Chevrolet Bolt EV, Fiat Chrysler’s hybrid minivan Pacifi- ca and Ford’s technology-loaded Escape made the headlines. Other major newsmakers were autonomous vehicles, the Volks- wagen diesel emission scandal and the Takata airbag debacle. Dan Nicholson, vice president of Global Propulsion Systems at General Motors, talked about the Chevy Bolt making it to market. “The Bolt is the first mass-pro- duced EV with the ability to trav- el distances so it eliminates the problem of driver range anxiety,” Nicholson said. And, Nicholson said, the Bolt hit the marketplace two years be- fore Tesla’s Model 3. That Califor- nia automaker began taking or- ders for the vehicle in April, de- spite the fact that it told poten- tial buyers the vehicle won’t be ready to be sold until late 2017 at the earliest. The Bolt was first unveiled as a concept car at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. GM began testing 50 Bolt prototypes at GM’s Milford Prov- ing Ground the following June. GM CEO Mary Barra an- nounced in January of 2016 at the Consumers Electronics Show (CES) that GM was putting the Bolt into production. “The message from consumers about the Bolt EV concept was clear and unequivocal: Build it,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America, at the Chicago Auto Show in March. GM delivered the first Bolts to customers on the West Coast just a couple of weeks ago, meaning the car went from concept to re- ality in less than two years. But GM wasn’t the only compa- ny making strides in green tech- nology in 2016. Fiat Chrysler in- troduced the world’s first hybrid minivan to the marketplace. The 2017 Hybrid Pacifica be- gan production at Windsor As- sembly in early December. The vehicle made its debut at the 2016 NAIAS. Patrick Keitz, product manager for the 2017 Pacifica, said the announcement was made in Detroit because that’s where the minivan was cre- ated. “What’s great about the Hybrid Pacifica is that we didn’t have to sacrifice interior space to make the vehicle possible,” Keitz said at the time of its introduction. “We put the batteries in the stow-and-go space below the seats so people don’t lose cargo space. Thus, the Pacifica still has best-in-class interior cargo space.” The pivotal technology behind the new Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is its innovative electrically vari- able transmission (EVT), Keitz said. Patented by Fiat Chrysler, the device features two elec- tric motors, which are both ca- pable of driving the vehicle’s wheels. Green innovations weren’t the only technologies reaching fruition in 2016. Alisa Priddle, editor of the De- troit bureau of Motor Trend maga- zine, said that 2016 was the year that driver assistance, some- times referred to as autonomous technology, became a reality. “This tech really took off in 2016,” Priddle said. “Companies Technology, Greening Grabbed the Headlines in 2016 Warren-based Lipari Foods, Inc. is investing $39.4 million to build a state-of-the-art 252,000- square-foot freezer, warehouse and truck terminal building in the city of Warren. The project will create at least 337 new jobs over three years, said Macomb County official Jack Johns. Lipari Foods is a wholesale food distributor that serves food-service establishments and retailers throughout the Mid- west, Johns said. The site cho- sen for the redevelopment cur- rently comprises two salvage yards on Bunert Road, south of East Eleven Mile Road. “This project would never have happened without the help of several city, county and state departments,” said Thom Lipari, CEO of Lipari Foods. “In particu- lar, the Macomb County Depart- ment of Planning & Economic Development, in conjunction with Jack Johns, project coordi- nator, guided us through all the necessary paperwork to secure approximately $5.9 million in tax abatements over 12 years.” Lipari Foods Inc. The appointment is pending negotiation and approval of an employment contract by the board of trustees, said Jeanne Nicol, spokeswoman for the college. “Even with a competitive and qualified candidate pool, Dr. Sawyer was clearly the best choice,” said James F. Kelly, chair of the Presidential Search Advi- sory Committee and chair of the college’s board of trustees, which made the selection. “His long-standing experience with the college and community, as well as his solid background in business, will ensure a smooth transition with a knowledgeable leader ready to fully leverage Ma- comb’s strengths while effective- ly guiding the institution into the future.” Sawyer has 14 years of experi- ence at Macomb, previously serving as vice provost for Ca- reer Programs and dean of Engi- neering and Advanced Technolo- gy. In addition, he has 17 years of business experience in leader- ship positions in engineering, quality and operations prior to joining the college. Sawyer earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineer- ing from Lawrence Technological University, and a master’s in ad- ministration and doctorate in Sawyer Named MCC President Designate People may be dreaming about a white Christmas, but GM is proud of its green year. General Motors achieved a record number of landfill-free facilities in 2016, exceeding its commitment four years early, said GM spokeswoman Becky Price. The Detroit automaker now op- erates 152 global facilities that recycle, reuse or convert to ener- gy all waste from daily opera- tions. These 52 non-manufacturing sites and 100 manufacturing sites contribute to GM’s top and bot- tom lines by driving efficiencies, generating revenue and saving money, Price said. “We are committed to manu- facturing cars and trucks for our customers in a safe and responsi- ble way,” said Alicia Boler-Davis, GM executive vice president, Global Manufacturing. “While we continue to increase the reuse of byproducts, our vision is to eliminate waste by applying the most advanced manufacturing processes and technologies in our plants globally.” Whether it’s recycling Flint water bottles into engine cover insulation or turning trashed tires from the Mississippi River into air-deflecting baffles, the company is working together with its suppliers to advance a more circular economy where materials are kept in use, Boler- Davis said. General Motors champions matchmaking efforts, Price said, such as the Materials Mar- ketplace, where one company’s trash can be another’s raw mate- rial. Altogether, General Motors re- cycles or reuses 2 million metric tons of byproducts over the course of a year. If someone were to place that material into the beds of Chevro- let Silverado extended-cab pick- up trucks and park them end to end, they would stretch around the world. General Motors has generated up to $1 billion in savings from recycling in recent years, Price said. The company reinvests that money into the business, includ- ing the development of fuel-effi- cient vehicles and new technolo- gies shaping the future of person- al mobility. Landfill-free facilities result in greater operational effi- ciency and eliminate waste-haul- ing fees. TACOM’s Adele Saba has beennamed to the Crain’s Detroit Busi-ness ‘40 Under 40’ class.

The annual selection honors40 overachievers under 40 yearsof age.

The award is based on factorssuch as financial impact andcommunity leadership.

To be eligible, nominees musthave been 39 or younger as ofOct. 3; Saba is 30.

Saba was nominated by CherylKennelly, Chief of TACOM Life Cy-cle Management Command’s Re-source Management Business(G8) Office.

Saba, who is the daughter ofJordanian immigrants, began herwork in G8 as a civilian programanalyst in 2008. Since then, shehas transferred to the Army’sTank Automotive Research, De-velopment and Engineering Cen-ter (TARDEC).

In G8, Saba led the teamcharged with developing strategyand disbursement of $500 millionannually for overseas contingencyoperations – TACOM’s largestbudget element, said Higgins.

According to Saba, some of thefunds were used for “resetting”Army equipment to optimal con-dition after it returned from com-bat operations. Funds were also

used to buy weapons systems forwarfighters, to build trained andready forces, and to procurechemical and biological protec-tive equipment for soldiers.

In addition, Saba also led theteams that conducted annual re-source summits to plan for thenext fiscal year and managedbudget formulation requirementsfor five years into the future.“Her leadership role directly im-pacted Army readiness, and sol-dier support, safety and surviv-ability,” said TACOM spokes-woman Rae Higgins.

When Saba was named as oneof Crain’s ‘40 Under 40,’ she said,“It was heartwarming. I had toreread the email notification acouple of times to make sure” ofwhat it said.

Saba said her parents “werereally proud of me and they felthappiness because they camehere from another country to geta better opportunity.”

At TARDEC, Saba is a programanalyst for ground vehicle andpower mobility.

“I ensure the warfighter is ade-quately equipped with all neces-sary items to ensure he or she isas safe as possible out in thefield” by allocating money tothose programs, Saba said.

Kennelly said she immediatelythought of Saba when she re-ceived Crain’s nomination appli-cation. “She is truly special. Notonly does she possess the tech-nical knowledge to lead the finan-cial sustainment mission forTACOM G8, she has the heart tolead people.

“Not only is she respected andadmired by her peers, but by hersubordinate team members andsuperiors as well.

“Adele is special and I am hon-ored to know her,” Kennellyadded. “She is a great examplethat women can do it all – she isa fantastic mom, [and is] devot-

ed to her husband and familywhile supporting our troops.”

The ‘40 Under 40’ honor isn’tthe only recognition she hasreceived. Saba received severalhonors for budget planningin 2014, including the ArmyAchievement Medal for CivilianService, the G8’s Award of Excel-lence, and a congratulatorynote from TACOM’s two-starcommanding general, saidHiggins.

“The medal singled out her ex-ceptional service as the com-mand lead for the developmentof the TACOM LCMC FY15 Opera-tions and Maintenance, Army Re-source Summit. The Award of Ex-cellence recognized her for over-seeing the closeout of the com-mand’s $1.2 billion SupplementalProgram.

“The commanding general’snote was for going above and be-yond the call of duty in helpingthe TACOM LCMC obligate morethan 50 percent of our Opera-tions and Maintenance, Armyprogram funds in the first sixmonths of the fiscal year,” saidHiggins.

TACOM, headquartered in War-ren, is the only active-duty U.S.Army installation in the tristatearea of Michigan, Ohio and Indi-ana.

DETROIT (AP) – General Mo-tors will temporarily close fivefactories next month as it tries toreduce a growing inventory ofcars on dealer lots.

The factories will close any-where from one to three weeksdue to the ongoing U.S. marketshift toward trucks and SUVs,spokeswoman Dayna Hart saidDec. 19. Just over 10,000 workerswill be idled.

The company’s Detroit-Ham-tramck factory and Fairfax As-sembly plant in Kansas City,Kan., each will be shut down forthree weeks, while a plant inLansing, will be down for twoweeks. Factories in Lordstown,Ohio, and Bowling Green, Ky.,each will be idled for one week.

The factories make most carsin the General Motors lineup in-cluding the Chevrolet Cruze, Ca-maro, Corvette, Malibu, Volt andImpala; the Cadillac CT6, CTSand ATS; and the Buick Lacrosse.

At the current sales pace, GMdealers have enough Malibus tolast for 84 days and enough Ca-maros to last for 177 days, ac-cording to Ward’s Automotive.Normally automakers like tohave a 60-day supply on lots.

Last month, trucks and SUVsmade up almost 62 percent of allvehicles sold in the U.S.

GM, like other automakers, wascaught with too many cars ondealer lots as the shift continued, said Jeff Schuster, senior vicepresident of forecasting for theLMC Automotive consulting firm.

Automakers have started dis-counting cars, but they need tocut production as the shift con-tinues, he said.

“There’s nothing that suggestsa move back to cars,” Schustersaid.

He predicted strong Decembersales but said it won’t be enough“to overcome some of this bloat-ing of inventory.’’

Buyers are snapping up SUVslargely because they like the highseating position and the abilityto haul things. Gasoline pricesaround $2 per gallon have helpedthe sales, but SUVs also have be-come more fuel efficient.

GM’s inventory of vehicleson dealer lots at the end ofNovember stood at 874,162, up26.5 percent from the same timea year ago. Workers at theplants will get company supple-mental pay and unemploymentbenefits that add up to most oftheir pay.

into law Dec. 9 comes with fewspecific state regulations andleaves many decisions up toautomakers and companies likeGoogle and Uber.“It also allows automakers and

tech companies to run autono-

mous taxi services and permitstest parades of self-driving trac-tor-trailers as long as humans arein each truck. And they allow thesale of self-driving vehicles to thepublic once they are tested andcertified, according to the state.”Within days of that announce-

ment, GM declared that the com-pany would be testing autono-mous vehicles on public roads. And Fiat Chrysler announced

that the company had completedbuilding 100 Hybrid Pacificasmeant to be outfitted with fullyself-driving technology being de-veloped by Waymo (formerlyknown as the Google Self-DrivingCar Project). These vehicles willjoin Waymo’s self-driving fleet in2017.Other issues rolled over into

2016 from 2015. The Volkswagendiesel emission scandal contin-ued to make news. In Septemberof 2015, the company admitted tomaking and installing “defeat” de-vices designed to fool emissiontests. In September, James Robert

Liang, a VW engineer whoworked in California, admittedas part of a plea deal with theJustice Department that the de-feat device was purposely in-stalled in VW diesels sold in theUnited States. In October, a federal judge ap-

proved a final settlement thatrequired VW to offer to buy backabout 475,000 vehicles. The buy-back values ranged from $12,000to $44,000.

The company also agreed topay $2.7 billion in environmentalmitigation fees and another $2billion for clean emissions infra-structure.The Takata airbag scandal also

continued in 2016. The companymakes airbags for most OEMsand, beginning in 2013, compa-nies began recalling vehicleswith Takata airbags because, under certain circumstances, airbags could deploy with somuch force that flying debriscould injure or even kill driversand passengers. In May of 2016, the National

Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration (NHTSA) initiated a recallcampaign affecting about 35 to 40million vehicles.Despite these efforts, a truck

transporting Takata airbag partswas involved in a crash in Que-mado, Texas, in August. Thecrash caused the cargo to ex-plode, destroying a house andkilling a woman inside.

The Ford Mustang hasadded yet another award to itstrophy case – Women’s Perform-ance Car of the Year 2016.

Up against a field of 294 com-petitors, Mustang emerged as thetop performance car in theWomen’s World Car of the Yearawards, said Ford spokesmanDan Jones.

The awards are determined by17 judges across 14 countries –the only vehicle honors in theworld granted by a panel madeup entirely of women.

Mustang’s closest contenderwas the critically acclaimed FordFocus RS, with just one pointseparating the two, Jones said.

The 2016 Mustang was creat-ed, in part, Jones said, by a groupof women.

They included SusanLampinen, Ford Chief Color andMaterials designer; MelanieBanker, Ford Mustang Marketingmanager; Michele Lubin Henning,Ford Vehicle Integration supervi-sor, and Marcy Fisher, Ford Vehi-cle Line director.

The judges posted opinionsabout the Mustang on the

Women’s World Car of the YearFacebook page.

“Ford Mustang is surprisinglyloved by women who are after asexy, sporty, masculine car thatturns heads,” said Juliet Potter,Women’s World Car of the Yearjury member from Australia.

“Combining the car’s silver-screen celebrity status with real-life practicality, Mustang

screams, ‘I am in control!’ and de-livers the same behind the wheelwith above-average grip and sus-pension. The Mustang is a truejoy to drive.”

Maggie Barry of Scotland andMotoring editor, Media Scotland(including Daily Record and Sun-day Mail), also had kind things tosay about the Mustang.

“I think we had a really goodlineup of winning cars this yearfrom the practical to the utterlydesirable,” Barry said. “I love thelook and sound of the Mustang –it’s just so gutsy ...”

Marta Garcia Fernandez ofSpain, motoring editor for Quomagazine, said that the Mustangwas an iconic car that takes itsheritage as a classic muscle carseriously, but it also comes withadvanced technology and has avery good relationship betweenpower and price.

Odiel Menink is from Hollandand is the founder and test editorfor autoblog Femme Frontaal, which gives the female perspec-tive on cars.

She wrote that the “new FordMustang is the most playful rear-wheel-drive car out there.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Volk-swagen reached a deal that willgive at least some owners of theremaining 80,000 diesel vehiclescaught in the company’s emis-sions cheating scandal the op-tion of a buyback and providecompensation to all of them ontop of any repurchase or repairs,U.S. regulators and a federaljudge said Dec. 20.

The $1 billion settlement withthe U.S. Environmental Protec-tion Agency will give owners of20,000 3-liter diesel cars thechoice of a buyback. The figuredoes not include additional pay-ments to owners.

Volkswagen believes it canbring the other 60,000 vehiclesinto compliance with pollutionregulations and will not offer abuyback if that’s the case, U.S.District Judge Charles Breyersaid in San Francisco.

The deal includes $225 millionthe German automaker will con-tribute to an environmental fundto offset the cars’ excess pollu-tion, Cynthia Giles of the EPA

said in a conference call with re-porters.

Additional compensation forcar owners will be substantial, according to the judge, but hedid not provide a figure and saidthe sides still had more work todo.

“I am optimistic the partieswill resolve the remaining is-sues,” Breyer said, without elab-orating on what was left to bedone.

The settlement was a majorstep toward rectifying lawsuitsstemming from the global scan-dal that erupted last year, dam-aging Volkswagen’s reputationand hurting its sales.

The company previouslyreached a nearly $15 billion dealfor 475,000 2-liter diesel cars alsoprogrammed to cheat on emis-sions tests.

Hinrich J. Woebcken, presidentand CEO of Volkswagen Group ofAmerica Inc., said the agreementannounced Dec. 20 was part ofVolkswagen’s “efforts to makethings right” for its customers.

DETROIT (AP) – The U.S. autosafety agency has opened an in-vestigation into complaints thatanother 1 million Fiat Chryslervehicles can roll away after theowners shift transmissions intopark, a problem similar to theone being blamed in the death ofStar Trek actor Anton Yelchin. The investigation by the Na-

tional Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration covers FiatChrysler’s top-selling vehicle, theRam 1500 pickup from the 2013to 2016 model years, as well asthe 2014 to 2016 Dodge Durango. The rollaway complaints are

similar to those that promptedthe recall of 1.1 million JeepGrand Cherokees and other vehi-cles earlier this year, althoughthose vehicles have differentshifters.Yelchin, 27, known for playing

Chekov in the film series, died inJune after his 2015 Jeep GrandCherokee pinned him against amailbox pillar and security fenceat his home in Los Angeles. His Jeep was among the vehi-

cles recalled in April because ofcomplaints from drivers who hadtrouble telling if they put the con-sole-mounted shift levers in“park’’ after stopping. Many re-ported that the vehicles rolled

off after the driver exited. LosAngeles police are still investigat-ing Yelchin’s death. In the new investigation, the

government says Rams and Du-rangos have rotary knob shiftersthat are linked electronically tothe transmission. The knobs areturned to the left or right andhave detents that click into gear. But the government said in

documents posted Dec. 20 that itreceived 43 complaints allegingthat the vehicles rolled away un-expectedly. Owners reported 25crashes and nine injuries. Thirty-four of the owners alleged thatthe vehicles moved while theshifters were in park, and mostsaid the engines were running.“Notably, none of the reports

indicate that the parking bakewas engaged at the time of therollaway incident,” NHTSA saidin the documents. Fiat Chryslersays it’s cooperating with the in-vestigation, and it joined NHTSAin urging drivers to always useparking brakes when they stopvehicles. Both Fiat Chrysler shifters are

different from conventionallevers on the steering column orconsole. Most cars have consoleshifters that slide forward orbackward to indicate the car’sgear. They used to be tied to acable that physically changedgears. But the auto industry has

developed new transmissionswith the gear selection con-trolled electronically. The Grand Cherokee shift

levers like Yelchin’s had to bepushed forward or backward tochange gears, confusing manydrivers. In the recall, FiatChrysler changed the softwareso the vehicles automaticallyshift into park if the driver’s dooris opened. In the latest investigation, no

recall has been issued, but one ispossible. NHTSA says it’s investi-gating the scope of the problem.

Repurposing waste into vehi-cle components or plant suppliesmeans the company doesn’thave to buy virgin material.“We view sustainability as a

business approach,” said JohnBradburn, GM global manager ofWaste Reduction.“We look at ways we can grow

and strengthen our business forthe long term, and that oftenmeans reducing our environmen-tal footprint while maximizingsocial benefit.”About a third of GM’s total

landfill-free sites are technicalcenters, warehouses and offices,Price said. While in the midst of a major

renovation at three Michiganfacilities, GM partnered withHerman Miller and Green Stan-dards to repurpose surplus of-fice assets into $1 million ofin-kind donations to about 100Michigan-based community or-ganizations.Landfill-free sites added this

year in Michigan are:• Powertrain plant in Romu-

lus;• Warehouse in Flint;• Aftersales operation in Madi-

son Heights;• Storage facility in Grand

Blanc.GM also added landfill-free

sites in Asia, Africa, North Ameri-ca and South America:• Engine, parts distribution

center and stamping operation inTalegaon, India;• Distribution center in Char-

lotte, N.C.;• Parts distribution center

and assembly plant in Quito,Ecuador;• Two assembly plants and

two distribution centers in

Port Elizabeth, South Africa;• Assembly plant in Cairo,

Egypt;• GM Canada headquarters in

Oshawa, Canada;• Foundry in Toluca, Mexico;• An assembly plant, stamping

plant, technical center, engineer-ing facility and support office inSão Caetano do Sul, Brazil;• Assembly plant in Bogota,

Colombia.With the Toluca, Mexico,

foundry now on the list – a sitethat melts and molds metal tomake auto components – none ofGM’s manufacturing operationsin Mexico send waste to landfills. All GM European Opel/Vauxhallmanufacturing plants have beenlandfill-free since 2015.
