University of Detroit Mercy ishelping meet the current needfor engineers trained in SystemsEngineering with its new SystemsEngineering Graduate Certificate.Detroit Mercy has been among
the national leaders in SystemsEngineering education throughits Master of Science in ProductDevelopment (MPD) program, said school spokesman GaryErwin. Now, students have achance to earn a graduate certifi-cate in Systems Engineering.“What we’ve done is taken – in
my opinion – the highest impactclasses out of the MPD program,in terms of systems engineering, and compiled them into a tight, unified curriculum that exposesengineers to the current state ofthe art in systems engineering,”said Michael Vinarcik, adjunctprofessor at Detroit Mercy. The Systems Engineering Grad-
uate Certificate was created incooperation with Ford Motor Co.,which already had employees en-rolled in and graduating from theMPD program, Vinarcik said.
The credits earned in the Sys-tems Engineering Graduate Cer-tificate program can be used to-ward earning a master’s degree.“It’s a great program,” said
Ford employee Kyle Ebner. “I feltat home here. I felt like I couldtalk to any of the professors any-time I needed to, and they reallystrive to answer questions, evenafter hours. I think I learned morethan I expected I was going tolearn. I would recommend it toothers – and I have at work.”Detroit Mercy’s professors are
readily available to students, andthey are also widely respected inthe field of systems engineering, said Vinarcik.Erwin said Vinarcik is consid-
ered one of the most visible Sys-tems Engineering experts in thecountry and routinely speaks atsystems engineering conferenceshosted by the InternationalCouncil on Systems Engineering(INCOSE), National Defense In-dustrial Association (NDIA) andthe American Society for Engi-neering Education (ASEE).
He recently keynoted the 2017No Magic World Symposium.“Mike brings a wealth of back-

and seeing immediate results.Mike is very well respected byour students and their employ-ers. He’s developed a great repu-tation with Detroit Mercy.”The industry is constantly
changing and evolving, Vinarciksaid, adding that he’s aware ofthose changes because he lives itevery day. As a leader in thefield, he received the 2017 CameoAward for Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis Excellence for histhought leadership in Model-Based Systems Engineering. Astechnology evolves, so does De-troit Mercy’s Systems Engineer-ing program, he said.“Systems have become very
complicated and complex withemergent behaviors,” Vinarciksaid. “There are so many thingsthat make developing a systemcomplicated today versus even20 years ago.“To manage that complexity
and improve the odds of pro-
gram success, it takes access toand knowledge of the currentstate of the art in systems engi-neering.“That’s what we’re trying to
teach the students with thesecourses in both the MPD and cer-tificate programs. It’s not justabout tools and processes, butalso about how to see the realproblem that needs to be solvedand to frame it properly. Theworst thing you can do is tosolve the wrong problem very ef-ficiently. We’re trying to showstudents how to see, understandand solve the right problem.”The program teaches students
state-of-the-art methods, such asModel-Based Systems Engineer-ing (MBSE), Erwin said. Studentsuse SysML, the systems model-ing language, to describe systembehavior, structure, interfaces, and requirements.SysML allows engineers to
make changes in one place andhave that information cascade toevery related artifact and not
have to manually make changesto every document and picture. The program also exposes stu-
dents to new technologies theymight never see working at a sin-gle company, Erwin said.“For students, because indus-
try is very competitive and thereis proprietary development anddesign all around, they don’t getto see what other companies aredoing,” Kleinke said.“Of course, we don’t share any
proprietary information, butMike has significant visibilityinto applications in a variety of
industries and organizations be-cause of his involvement in IN-COSE, NDIA and other organiza-tions.“He can give them a feel for
what the entire industry lookslike and how they compare toothers taking on similar chal-lenges.“With his experience and
knowledge of how systems engi-neering has been applied atother companies, he can bringthat. That’s how he makes suchan impact at our students’ com-panies so quickly.”

Macomb County will onceagain celebrate ManufacturingDay (MFG Day) and is seekingarea manufacturers to serve ashost sites as well as sponsors tohelp cover costs.MFG Day is a national cam-

Thanks to Maven Gig, not own-ing a car is no barrier to makingmoney for drivers in today’s gigeconomy.GM’s ride-sharing network
Maven is expanding. StartingAug. 10, freelance drivers in LosAngeles have access to MavenGig vehicles to support all theirhustles. Vehicle reservations areavailable through the Maven app, said GM spokeswomanStephanie Rice.By fall 2017, Maven Gig will
launch in Boston, Phoenix andWashington, D.C., and Baltimoreand Detroit will soon join themix, Rice said. This will be goodfor freelancers who want free-dom and flexibility, and MavenGig provides both.Take “Jamie,” for example, who
earns a couple hundred dollarsas a freelancer picking up anddropping off passengers as a li-censed driver for a ridesharingcompany on an average Fridaynight, Rice said. With Maven Gig, Jamie can
now increase earning power byadding other gigs. For instance, spending two hours during thelunch rush delivering food addsanother $30-$50.Delivering packages and gro-
ceries during the day adds evenmore, Rice said. And Maven Gig vehicles are
available for flat weekly ratesthat include the car, unlimitedmiles, insurance (minus de-ductibles) and maintenance.Having unlimited mileage and in-surance to cover personal andcommercial use are extremelyimportant for drivers in the gigeconomy, Rice said. Pricingstarts at $189 plus taxes for aChevrolet Cruze, Rice said.Additional vehicles include the
Chevrolet Malibu ($209 per weekplus taxes), Trax ($219 per weekplus taxes), Impala ($225 perweek plus taxes) and Bolt EV($229 per week plus taxes). TheChevrolet Bolt EV is available forreservation with free charging atEVgo stations for a limited time. The Chevrolet Bolt EV with an
EPA-estimated range of 238 all-electric miles is the most popularvehicle among Maven Gig driv-ers, Rice said. More than 100 BoltEVs are available in Los Angelesand that number will double bythe end of 2017. Bolt EVs in SanFrancisco will double to morethan 125 by the end of the year.In Boston, Maven Gig will start
with 20 Bolt EVs and will scale asinfrastructure allows.Maven Gig Bolt EVs have driv-
en 1.4 million all-electric miles inCalifornia since February 2017and have saved an estimated50,000 gallons of gas.More than 130,000 rides have
been given in Maven Gig BoltEVs, and drivers show no signsof range anxiety, Rice said. That’simportant because range anxietyis one of the major concerns con-sumers have expressed concern-ing EVs. Maven Gig drivers in aBolt EV travel, on average, 30percent more miles per day thanthose in traditional internal com-bustion engine vehicles.
On average, Maven Gig mem-bers in Bolt EVs drive more thanhalf the vehicle range every day.
Maven Gig drivers have takentrips from San Francisco to Port-land and from San Diego to LosAngeles.Maven Gig is an “agnostic”
platform that allows members toearn money by driving for multi-ple apps, Rice said. Previously,Maven Gig announced key part-nerships with GrubHub, In-stacart, Roadie and ridesharing
services. Now, HopSkipDrive isadded as a partner.HopSkipDrive is a ride service
that helps parents get their kidswhere they need to go whenthey’re not able to do so them-selves.Maven Gig is making life sim-
pler and more convenient fordrivers through a mobile app,Rice said. Maven City car sharingand Maven Gig are now integrat-ed in a single app. Drivers cansee vehicle availability with pric-ing and location. Reservationsand pickup date/time can bescheduled through the app.“We are committed to bringing
Bolt EVs to all Maven Gig mar-kets. Drivers want the Bolt EV be-cause of cost savings as well ashelping with energy and environ-mental goals,” said Rachel
Bhattacharya, chief growth offi-cer for Maven.“The freelance economy is
growing and Maven Gig is grow-ing along with it to provide trans-portation solutions for freelancedrivers.”The bottom line, Rice said, is
Maven Gig provides cars for free-lancers to earn money howeverthey want. More than two-thirdsearn by driving for multiple appslike rideshare or delivery servic-es. Members can easily take ad-vantage of the gig economy with-out worrying about owning a car.Unlimited miles and insuranceare included, and there’s nomembership fee after a one-time$20 application fee. Weeklyrentals are currently availablethrough the Maven app in L.A.,San Diego and San Francisco.

In 1969, a few enterprisingdealers used Chevrolet’s special-order system to get the ZL1 en-gine installed in 69 regular-pro-duction Camaros, Fox said. Thecars became instant legends onthe street and dragstrip.More than 40 years later,

A 2017 Flex is one of the vehicles Ford has donated to the DAV.
Veterans who have beenwounded in battle have servedtheir country well, said Fordspokesman Eric Mitchell, andFord is thanking them by donat-ing eight vehicles to the DAVTransportation Network fleet.Ford Motor Company vehicle
donations are giving disabledmilitary veterans new mobilityoptions, as they seek medicalcare and treatment that could im-prove their quality of life, saidFord spokesman Eric Mitchell. The eight donated vehicles will
be used to assist disabled veter-ans who need help getting todoctor appointments, Mitchellsaid.Last year, Ford vehicles trans-
ported nearly 700,000 disabledveterans in the United States toessential doctor and hospital vis-its, Mitchell said. The DAV Trans-portation Network recruits vol-unteer drivers who will put thenew Ford Flex utilities into serv-ice taking ill and disabled veter-ans to Veteran Affairs medicalcenters across the country.New additions to the DAV fleet
will be deployed to locations inAugusta, Ga.; Des Moines, Iowa;Topeka, Kan.; Asheville, N.C.;Memphis, Tenn.; and Waco,
Texas. New Orleans will get twonew vehicles.Over the past 21 years, Ford
has donated 215 vehicles to theDAV Transportation Network, which was formed in 1987 andhas helped more than 18 millionveterans reach VA facilities.“Without Ford’s generosity and
the hard work of our volunteers,we would not have been able toprovide nearly 700,000 rides forveterans last year alone,” saidDave Riley, DAV national com-mander.“Ford vehicles are crisscross-
ing the country for veterans, traveling almost 23 million milesevery year to make certain ourheroes can access the care theyearned.”
Henry Ford began hiring dis-abled veterans returning fromWorld War I in 1919. In 1922, Fordorganized a cross-country cara-van of 50 Model Ts to take dis-abled veterans to their nationalconvention, Mitchell said. Thatwas the beginning of the compa-ny’s 95-year relationship withDAV, said Mitchell.Ford’s support for military
families today includes programssuch as nurse assistant trainingthrough the American Red Cross,
and providing Ford Blue OvalScholarships to military mem-bers and their spouses to pre-pare them for careers in health-care.Ford Focus on Freedom hon-
ors current and former militaryveterans with a special VIP eventat the annual Ford Fireworks inDetroit, Mitchell said.Since 1974, Ford and Ford Fund
have provided nearly $11 millionto veterans’ organizations. Fordtoday employs nearly 6,000 vet-erans, plus hundreds of activemilitary personnel, reservistsand guardsmen.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Gov.Rick Snyder expressed optimismthat Taiwanese electronics man-ufacturer Foxconn TechnologyGroup will open a facility inMichigan, but he said thespecifics remain uncertain and itcould be a few months beforeany potential deal takes shape. In a phone interview Aug. 7
from Shanghai, where he wasconcluding a nine-day trade tripin China, Snyder said there is a“strong possibility’’ for Foxconnto still locate in the state afterthe company in recent weekspicked neighboring Wisconsinfor a $10 billion display panelplant with 3,000 employees thatcould grow to 13,000.Snyder told The Associated
Press that Foxconn ChairmanTerry Gou invited him for dinner, meetings and a tour of the com-pany’s sprawling factory in Shen-zhen near Hong Kong that em-ploys some 200,000 workers. They discussed the autonomousvehicle industry and advancedmanufacturing, Snyder said. The company, he said, is ad-
vanced in tooling, machineryand robotics similarly to Michi-gan but does not have much of aU.S. presence in those sectors.“We had very healthy, very
good discussions about Michi-gan’s strengths and how it couldbe very good for Foxconn to bepresent in Michigan in somefashion. What it is has yet to bedetermined,’’ he said.
Chinese media outlets, quotingGou, reported over the weekendthat Foxconn plans to open a re-search and development centerrelated to self-driving vehicles inMichigan, where General Motors,Ford and Fiat Chrysler are based. The company has not confirmedthe plans, instead repeating thatMichigan is one of the states un-der consideration for some sortof investment.Snyder declined to confirm
Foxconn is eyeing an au-tonomous vehicle facility butsaid “that would be one of thenatural things that they couldwell be looking at.’’ Foxconn saidlast month that its Wisconsin an-nouncement was just the first ofseveral unspecified investmentsthe company will be making inthe U.S.“It’s going really well,’’ Snyder
said of the courtship. “But we’restill getting to know each other,we’re still working through that. They can make their own busi-ness decisions. But we’re goingto continue to present themgood opportunities of what wecan do in Michigan.’’Little known to consumers, the
maker of iPhones and othergadgets is a giant in the electron-ics industry thanks to its domi-nant position in the global manu-facturing supply chain. Workingconditions at Foxconn’s factoriesin China have come under scruti-ny in the past due to labor prac-tices and suicides.

Interest rates on new-vehicleloans fell to a six-month low inJuly as automakers ramped upsummer zero-percent financedeals, according to a new analy-sis from Edmunds, the car shop-ping and information platform. The annual percentage rate
(APR) on new financed vehiclesaveraged 4.77 percent in July, down from 4.96 percent in June, said Edmunds spokeswomanMonica Favorite. And 11.3 per-cent of purchasers who financedtook advantage of zero-percentfinancing, up from 9.47 percent inJune and 10.2 percent a year ago.“Zero-percent finance deals
are common in the summer, butcar buyers can save even morethis year,” said Jessica Caldwell,Edmunds executive director of
industry analysis. “Even thoughinterest rates were lower on av-erage in July than at any time inthe past six months, they’re stillhovering at highs not seen since2009. These higher interest ratesmake zero-percent financing abig carrot for dealers seeking tolure car shoppers.”Overall, interest rates on auto

FLINT, Mich. (AP) – Economicdevelopment officials in Flint aremaking a push to revitalize theformer manufacturing site thatonce produced every Buick thatGeneral Motors made. The Flint & Genesee Chamber
of Commerce was awarded a$197,000 federal grant to allowwork to be completed at the sitethat prioritizes development lo-cations, creates marketing mate-rials and identifies and assistsprospective tenants. The grant will also help with
conceptualizing building designsand developing constructioncosts for projects requiring40,000-square-feet of space, TheFlint Journal reported.“The approach that we’ve tak-
en is to kind of think about thewhole site but also recognizethat very few projects wouldneed the whole site,’’ said JaniceKarcher, vice president of eco-nomic development for thechamber. “Many of the requeststhat we’ve received are compa-nies that want to occupy 50- or100,000-square-feet and thosekinds of facilities can locate onfive to 10 acres and don’t need390.’’The grant also allows officials
to identify services at the sitethat could be vital to potentialdevelopers, such as transporta-tion access, size and location ofwater lines, size and location ofsewer lines and where gas andelectric services are.“This level of information al-
lows us to get in front of moreprospective companies, develop-ers and be able to say, ‘look,we’ve done our homework tomake it easier for you to evaluatethe site.’ That’s the real goalhere,’’ Karcher said. “That’s real-ly helpful in being able to avoid
surprises in potential projectsbut also to help zero in an opti-mal portions of the site.’’Most of the 390-acre Buick City
closed in 1999, creating one ofthe state’s largest brownfieldsites. GM’s Powertrain FlintNorth closed in 2010 and endedmore than a century of manufac-turing at the site.Buick City employed nearly
30,000 at its peak.
