The Principal’s Pen November 1, 2013 Dear Warren Community School Parents, Guardians, and Friends – It’s November 1st already!! I didn’t intend to start wearing my winter coat and gloves so soon, but all week those 30- degree +/- days have reminded me that, whether the calendar says so or not, the thermometer is reminding us to dress for the weather every day when we head out for school! Please help your students “dress the part” by having jackets, hats, and mittens/gloves on every day – even if we’re hoping that the afternoon will be warmer. FALL BACK!! Don’t forget to set your clocks, phones, VCRs, car dashboards, etc. BACK one hour Saturday night (unless you intend to be awake at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, in which case you can change things right on time!) Remember that our annual change in time means that it is darker in the mornings while waiting for the bus and that it is harder to see people walking and crossing roads in the afternoon; let’s do all we can to help our children stay safe! Knowing that November will fly by, I thought reminding everyone (myself included) of upcoming activities and events would help us all plan and be organized. Seems funny to talk about NOT being in school, but November has several dates to remember that students will be home rather than at WCS: November 11 is Veterans’ Day; November 14 is an “Early Release Day” when students will leave school at noon; November 27, 28, and 29 will be days off around our Thanksgiving holiday. Mark your calendars and remind your children how important it is to be AT school on all those other days in November! Parent/Teacher conferences are now being scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, November 25 and 26. Your child’s teacher has sent (or will be sending) home a sign-up sheet that allows you to state your top choices of times to come in and talk about your child’s year and the progress he/she is making. Everyone at school does their best to accommodate schedules to the best of our ability; please set a reminder of the day and time your conference is scheduled, so that the most can be made of our time together. Friday, November 15, members of the Harlem Rockets basketball team will visit WCS and speak at an assembly about being positive community members and working together to wipe out bullying. They will also be competing with a local team of players in an entertaining game that evening, at MVHS. The entire school district is celebrating an Anti-Bullying Week from November 18 through November 22. Here at WCS, classes will be talking about strategies to address bullying behaviors, ways to positively interact with each other, and opportunities to build positive relationships at school and beyond. Meanwhile, students and staff are digging in to the learning at hand. Our fall assessments are complete and the information we have gained about your child’s learning strengths and needs is informing the teaching and learning activities that are planned for November and beyond, all with the goal of making each and every student increasingly successful at learning. Don’t hesitate to stop by, call in, or drop me a line. I remember that I “promised” a parent organizational session at the end of October – I’ve reset my sights and will be having a time sometime before Thanksgiving break when interested parents and I can sit together and discuss how we can work collectively to support your children and their WCS experiences. Health Office Newsletter November 1, 2013

Knox County Prescription Drug Discount Program

Most people believe the old adage that "when something sounds too good to be true, it is". This is one of those rare occasions where that doesn't necessarily apply!

Since 2008, The Knox County Prescription Drug Discount program, provided through the county affiliation with the National Association of Counties (NACo), has saved Knox County residents over $100,675* on their Rx needs. (*as of August 2013)

The program is available free of charge to any Knox County resident without regard to income or existing health insurance or medical condition.

To use the card, simply present it along with your usual insurance cards or whatever else you may use. If the card can provide a discount or increase an existing discount, it will - on the spot! The card itself is not insurance, and the discount may not work for everyone, but about two of every three attempts to use the card resulted in a discount. The savings for each allowed discount has averaged $14.56. That amounts to an average savings of over 26.1%.

There are many ways and places to get a card. The easiest is online through the NACo/Caremark website. You can immediately print a card from the site for use today! No waiting or special enrollment. The cards have also been provided to each Knox County town office or city hall. You may also pick up one by stopping by your child’s school Guidance and Health Offices. Most area libraries also have a stock on hand as do many area health care providers. If you would like to have a card mailed to you, simply call the EMA office at 594-5155 and they will be glad to drop one in the mail for you (along with a few extra’s for neighbors and family).

If you have a “special needs pet”, the card may also work for its prescription pet medications. Meds provided directly through your vet probably won’t result in a discount, but we’re told those filled at “people pharmacies” may.

The following pharmacies in Knox County participate in the program: Hannaford, Shaws, WalMart, Jensen’s Pharmacy, all Rite Aid locations, Kennebec Pharmacy & Home Care in Rockport and the Pen Bay Medical Center. To locate other pharmacies outside of Knox County and Maine, visit the CVS/Caremark NACo information website.

For more program information on drug interactions, drug costs, mail order service, etc visit the CVS/Caremark NACo Information website at www.nacorx.org.
