A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
At Warner Pacific, we develop significant relationships with our students, and believe it’s an essential means of educating, challenging and serving students who might otherwise not finish their education. The reality is our educational system has been designed for advantaged people. In order to make education more fully accessible, we need to create a “counter system” that grants access to a wider population—that’s what we’re about.
We intend to support, develop and retain our students, preparing them to move forward and be successful in their lives. We believe our work is to bring about the Kingdom of God in this place. That means we recruit students, staff and faculty who reflect the Kingdom of God in all its fullness, and see Warner Pacific as where we’ve been called to do His work.
Warner Pacific was founded in 1937 to support the work of the Church of God Reformation Movement (Anderson, Indiana). At our core is Wesleyan Holiness theology, which not only promotes personal holiness, but also social holiness. Inclusion and unity are tenants of our faith tradition.
Because of this heritage, Warner Pacific College is strategically positioned to prepare students to take on the significant needs of communities and individuals living within urban centers, whether in Portland, around the United States or abroad. Warner Pacific prepares faithful servant-leaders who have strong spiritual moorings, a deep sense of service to others, critical thinking skills to address economic and societal needs and the ability to adapt and lead in a rapidly changing world.
Through various academic programs, as well as a Humanities core curriculum, Warner Pacific challenges students to wrestle with paradoxes inherent within the human condition—truth is not always a matter of contrasts, but often shades of gray. In addition, the school’s urban location offers professional internships, volunteer opportunities and work experiences where students can apply the knowledge and skills they’ve developed in the classroom and within a campus culture that is centered on Christ.
Our Christ-centered mission also brings a moral responsibility to reach historically underserved students. We’ve deliberately kept our tuition for the traditional undergraduate program among the most affordable in the Northwest. We established a partnership with the Portland Leadership Foundation to create the Act Six Leadership and Scholarship Initiative, which provides full-need scholarships for young, emerging urban leaders for whom a private, liberal arts education would otherwise be out of reach. In addition, our Adult Degree Program is enjoying tremendous growth as working adults finally realize their longstanding dreams of earning a college degree.
Warner Pacific is a community that puts its core values into practice. We respect students’ capacity to think independently, produce quality work and maintain their part in the learning process, and expect them to do their best. They consistently rise to the occasion.
During their time at Warner Pacific, students learn the importance of questioning the status quo and wrestling with the paradoxes of life. They struggle with the process of owning their faith for themselves while becoming critical thinkers capable of evaluating evidence to inform their decisions.
Warner Pacific students work, serve and learn together, becoming friends and colleagues who deeply care for one another. They serve others in our neighborhood, city and world. Overall, students develop the skills necessary to be life-long learners, prepared to face a rapidly changing world.
Warner Pacific College is here to impart hope to our students through strong academic training, spiritual development and an authentic ethos of service to our city. I believe great things are in store for Warner Pacific as we live out that mission, and thank you for your partnership in this essential work.
Sincerely,
Andrea P. Cook, Ph.D. President
MISSION, VISION, VALUES, PARADOX—WARNER PACIFIC
Mission
Warner Pacific is a Christ-centered, urban, liberal arts college dedicated to providing students from diverse backgrounds an education that prepares them to engage actively in a constantly changing world.
Vision
Warner Pacific College will be a Christ-centered, innovative, diverse, formational learning community known for fostering collaboration, developing a sense of vocation among students, staff and faculty, and operating within a position of fiscal responsibility.
Values
As a contemporary Christian learning community, Warner Pacific College values being Christ-centered, people-focused, excellence-driven and future-directed.
EMBRACING PARADOX
We encourage interdisciplinary learning and invite honest questioning through a foundation of faith. As a result, faculty members have created a core curriculum rooted in the notion of paradox that challenges students to engage with life’s most difficult questions.
The Warner Pacific College experience additionally offers:
• Small classes: Our 11-to-one student-to-faculty ratio translates into the individualized attention and intellectual interaction that meaningful scholarship requires. Close academic relationships between faculty and students often result in customized internships and independent study courses, both of which are enhanced by the resources of the greater Portland area, where a multitude of cultural and employment opportunities await.
• Options: Undergraduates can choose from 27 majors and 29 minors, and students pursuing a graduate education can select one of three graduate studies degrees, including a Master of Education, Master of Teaching, and Master of Science in Management/Organizational Leadership.
• Ongoing education: For the last twenty years, our distinctive Adult Degree Program (ADP) has offered adult learners a convenient and pragmatic degree completion program that is built around their individual needs.
IN THE CITY
Located in the heart of Portland, Oregon, Warner Pacific College offers an ideal base from which to explore the range of cultures, places and ideas that urban settings afford. From visiting “the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan” (according to The New York Times) to enjoying the music and food at one of many local ethnic festivals, the city boasts a wide range of people and cultures.
According to United Nations’ estimates, the world’s urban population is growing by 60 million people annually, more than three times faster than growth in rural areas. By 2030, the UN expects nearly five billion of the world’s 8.1 billion people will live in cities. Knowing how to navigate the opportunities and challenges of city life will be a major advantage, both personally and professionally, for tomorrow’s leaders.
Cities also offer amazing opportunities to follow Jesus’ example of caring for our neighbors. At Warner Pacific, students might paint a nearby school on all-campus Common Day of Service, lead a worship band at a newly planted church or help new U.S. citizens with English literacy skills.
In a recent survey, Warner Pacific alumni were asked to complete the sentence, “I credit my Warner Pacific education with…” One of the top answers was “…exposing me to new ideas,” which happens not only in the classroom, but also by taking advantage of this city’s vibrant surroundings.
FOR THE CITY
Warner Pacific is a Christ-centered liberal arts college. Placed by God in the heart of the city, our daily reality and institutional identity are inextricably linked to our urban location in Portland. The city is who we are, where we experience God’s grace and presence, and Warner Pacific serves as a force for change, a community that demonstrates inclusion and diversity while addressing issues of regional injustice and educational challenges.
We prepare teachers, business executives, social workers, pastors, accountants and effective community members to go forth and lead. But—more importantly—at the center of it all is a unique liberal arts core that weaves faith, ethics and civic responsibility into the fabric of our education. Students are challenged to prepare for the complex issues facing our world today, while developing skills in logic and critical thinking with the intent of preparing them to face a rapidly evolving global marketplace.
To serve the city is to live out our calling with excellence. We will prepare graduates who think well, believe deeply and serve diligently. We will not seek answers to big questions as an academic exercise, but rather take into account how the answers immediately impact our city.
A RICH TRADITION AND BRIGHT FUTURE Warner Pacific College is the only Church of God (Anderson, IN) institution of higher learning in the western United States. First known as Pacific Bible College, the school opened in 1937 in a two-story mission home in Spokane, Washington, with the expressed goal of training ministers and church workers. The 21-member student body was led by two faculty members, including founding president, A.F. Gray.
In 1940, church leaders moved the college to its present location in Portland, Oregon, where it initially took up residence in a large four-story house, nicknamed “Old Main.” Influenced by Wesleyan theology, the College upheld an historical critical reading of the Holy Scripture, use of human reason, reflection on experience and respect for tradition.
Early graduates went on to notable terms of service as church leaders and missionaries in the United States and abroad. In 1959, the school changed its name to Warner Pacific College to reflect a growing emphasis on the liberal arts. Two years later, Warner Pacific became fully accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and WPC is also an active member of the Oregon Independent College Association.
Throughout its history, Warner Pacific has demonstrated scholastic innovation that fosters critical thinking along with spiritual maturity. In 1974, the college introduced an innovative general studies program that sought to integrate a Christian worldview across key academic disciplines.
Today, our core Humanities curriculum takes a “big questions” approach toward faith, ethics and civil responsibility, and culminates in a capstone thesis in which students examine a paradox within the human condition. Our liberal arts education—conducted within an atmosphere that acknowledges God as the
source of all wisdom, and that human nature demands a striving for knowledge—celebrates the truths, profound mysteries and questions created by that interface.
This is Warner Pacific College’s heritage, its current reality and its commitment to the future.
ACCREDITATION The College has been accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities since 1961. Additionally, the college is approved by the State of Oregon for the training of teachers in identified subject areas. Warner Pacific has also been approved to offer specific degree programs in the State of Washington
As Warner Pacific is regionally accredited, our students are generally accepted for transfer by other regionally accredited colleges and universities. Note that it’s at the discretion of accepting institutions what credits meet institutional equivalents for transfer.

Using the above definitions, please report for each of the following class-size intervals the number of class sections and class subsections offered in Fall 2012. For example, a lecture class with 800 students who met at another time in 40 separate labs with 20 students should be counted once in the “100+” column in the class section column and 40 times under the “20-29” column of the class subsections table.
Class Subsections: A class subsection includes any subsection of a course, such as laboratory, recitation, and discussion subsections that are supplementary in nature and are scheduled to meet separately from the lecture portion of the course. Undergraduate subsections are defined as any subsections of courses in which degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled for credit. As above, exclude noncredit classes and individual instruction such as dissertation or thesis research, music instruction, or one-to-one readings. Each class subsection should be counted only once and should not be duplicated because of cross-listings.
In the table below, please use the following definitions to report information about the size of classes and class sections offered in the Fall 2012 term.

Student to Faculty RatioReport the Fall 2012 ratio of full-time equivalent students (full-time plus 1/3 part time) to full-time equivalent instructional faculty (full time plus 1/3 part time). In the ratio calculations, exclude both faculty and students in stand-alone graduate or professional programs such as medicine, law, veterinary, dentistry, social work, business, or public health in which faculty teach virtually only graduate-level students. Do not count undergraduate or graduate student teaching assistants as faculty.

Class Sections: A class section is an organized course offered for credit, identified by discipline and number, meeting at a stated time or times in a classroom or similar setting, and not a subsection such as a laboratory or discussion session. Undergraduate class sections are defined as any sections in which at least one degree-seeking undergraduate student is enrolled for credit. Exclude distance learning classes and noncredit classes and individual instruction such as dissertation or thesis research, music instruction, or one-to-one readings. Exclude students in independent study, co-operative programs, internships, foreign language taped tutor sessions, practicums, and all students in one-on-one classes. Each class section should be counted only once and should not be duplicated because of course catalog cross-listings.
