ART IN NATURE July 23-26 (M-TH)Come learn about art immersed in nature. Campers will explore art techniques including color theory, texture, sculpture, and painting. Campers will draw inspiration from the prairie, forests, and lakes as we hike and learn about habitats and the animals that call them home. Campers will do project throughout the week including designing a nature diorama scene, sculpting an animal from clay, rock painting and nature inspired self-portraits. CREEPY CRAWLY CRITTERS August 6-10 (M-F)Are you fascinated with critters that look a little odd, behave in a weird way, live underground, or are only out at night? This week at camp we will investigate the world of snakes, insects, bats, and other creepy creatures found at Warner. Catch slimy frogs at the pond, look for giant water bugs in the lake, search for spiders in the bog, and explore the prairie for snakes and skinks. Through hands-on activities, investigative hikes, cool crafts and games, campers will develop an understanding of these amazing animals and an appreciation for the unusual. $180 WNC Friends/SMM members; $190 nonmembers

ULTIMATE SURVIVAL June 25-29 (M-F)Do you have what it takes to survive in the woods? Join us for a week of adventures as we learn how to make survival shelters, start fires, use a compass and GPS, and learn the skills needed to survive in the woods. Once again we’ll cook up chocolate covered crickets for the adventurous to try! $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

BEGINNING NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY June 25-29 (M-F)Learn how to compose stunning pictures in this hands-on class. Each camper will get to use one of Warner’s digital cameras to capture the beauty of different habitats. We’ll photograph flowers, landscapes, and even a live bird of prey. Each student will select one photo for a large print to take home. He or she will also take home the digital files of all the images took during camp. This class will teach the basics of how to become a polished nature photographer. Class is limited to 10 participants. $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

CRYPTOZOOLOGY July 9-13 (M-F)Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals, or cryptids. Some cryptids are part of historical folklore including big foot, the Loch Ness monster, and mermaids. Others we’ve thought to be extinct such as the Coelacanth and the giant squid. Both groups have avid believers of existence in whose footsteps we will follow as we piece together our own theories. We will delve into the history of cryptozoology, look at current research, and use camera traps, tracking, and other tools of the trade in search of cryptids right here at Warner. $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

CANOE & KAYAK ADVENTURES July 9-13 (M-F)Every Warner camper wishes for more time paddling on our lakes, so here’s your chance! This weeklong class is a favorite! Join us in our paddling adventures where we’ll start off by building basic canoe and kayak skills and work our way up to games and challenges both on and off the water. Our week together concludes with a day trip canoeing down the St. Croix River. Class size is limited to 10 participants.$200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

JUNIOR NATURALIST July 16-20 (M-F)Find out what it takes to be a naturalist as we explore all the habitats of Warner! We will meet and work with other professional naturalists as we learn more about bird banding, catching and identifying dragonflies, and more! We will do a natural resources project for Warner through clearing an area of buckthorn. Throughout the week we will work on recording our observations, phenology, and weather. $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

CANOE & KAYAK ADVENTURES July 16-20 (M-F)Every Warner camper wishes for more time paddling on our lakes, so here’s your chance! This weeklong class is a favorite! RIVER VALLEY EXPLORATIONS July 30-August 3 (M-F)This camp will explore the St Croix River Valley with field trips and fun activities while also learning about the different habitats of Warner. Field trips in the valley might include MN state parks, glacial formations, wetlands, forests and of course, the St. Croix River. We will investigate the role glaciers, native cultures, pioneer settlement, and current uses work together to create the river valley we love so much.$200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

LET’S GO FISHING! July 30-August 3 (M-F)Want to learn how to fish or further develop your fishing skills? This class for beginning anglers is designed to teach basic fish ecology, fishing skills and new ways to enjoy the outdoors. Campers will spend time inside and on area lakes, learning fish ecology and identification, basic equipment, casting techniques and safety. Class size is limited to 10 participants. $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

WILDER SIDE OF WARNER August 13-15 (M-W)We will hike until the trail ends, and then keep going! We will go off-trail to explore the hidden and unknown parts of Warner: destinations may include the Outpost; Happy Hills; and the Milkweed Field. Come ready to see new sites and create new stories to add to your Warner experiences.$150 WNC Friends/SMM members; $160 nonmembers

These 4 and 5-day camps run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.* Youth must be within this age range within three months of the first day of camp, with the exception of the Advanced Canoe and Kayak camp. Youth in the Advanced Canoe and Kayak camp must be ages 12, 13, 14 or up to age 15 and 3 months on the first day of camp.

CATCHING THE BUG! June 25-29 (M-F)Join Warner Director, Ron Lawrenz, for a fun-filled, hands-on camp exploring the fascinating world of insects and their relatives. We will use knowledge of how they navigate the world, and what they are attracted to to determine where to look for them, and then use our creativity to build and use devices to capture them for observation. We will explore Warner’s lakes, ponds, prairies, and forests throughout the week. A couple of days during the week will be focused on dragonflies - the largest, fastest, most fierce, and yet most beautiful, of our insect predators. Class size is limited to 10 participants.$200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

ADVANCED CANOE & KAYAK ADVENTURES July 23-July 27 (M-F)Are you ready to take your canoeing and kayaking skills to the next level? Looking for new adventures on the water? We’ll refresh our paddling skills and play games on the lakes of Warner. Our week will conclude with a day-long adventure paddling down the St. Croix River. Class size is limited to 10 participants. $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

FISH & FISHING August 6-10 (M-F)Explore several freshwater habitats and discover some of the reasons fish act as they do. Learn the techniques you need to become a successful angler. You’ll go fishing in nearby lakes using canoes and fish the shores of the St. Croix River so you can put all you’ve learned to good use! Students must provide their own rod-and-reel and basic fishing tackle. Class size is limited to 10 participants. $200 WNC Friends/SMM members; $210 nonmembers

FLY FISHING August 13-16 (M-TH)Coaxing a fish to strike a fly that you have created is a rewarding moment. Learn the magic of fly-fishing, from tying a wooly bugger to reading the water and learning about the natural histories of the fish you are after. Learn the basic “hows” and “whys” of this art and science and learn a lifelong sport. We’ll put our new skills to practice on nearby waters during this exciting camp. Fly rods are provided for class use. Cost includes fly tying materials. Class size is limited to 10 participants. $170 WNC Friends/SMM members; $180 nonmembers

Volunteer Opportunities AGES 16-21Check out WNC’s Summer Camp Assistants Volunteer Program!High school and college-age students, are you thinking about a future career in education or the environment? If so, Warner Nature Center is the place to be this summer! Become a Summer Camp Assistant (SCA) and learn important skills in how to work effectively with youth, peers and mentors. Gain valuable community service experience for college while learning how to lead young children in summer camp activities. Best of all, learn a little more about yourself and the value of sharing your love of nature with others!

During SCAT (SCA Training), volunteers will participate in activities and hiking to learn about Warner’s ecology and programs, as well as staff and fellow SCAs. They will learn leadership skills and education techniques for working with children in preparation for helping with summer camps.

SCAs must be between the ages of 16 and 21 within three months of the first day of summer camp. ALL SCAs are required to attend our one-day training, Monday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Upon completion of the required training, SCAs are required to assist with at least two camps, help naturalists with preparation and activities during camps, and serve as role models for young campers.

If you are interested in the SCA program, contact WNC volunteer coordinator, Ann Kirn, at [email protected] expressing an interest in applying for the SCA program with your name, email and phone number. Please do not have your parents contact us. You will then receive a questionnaire to complete and may be contacted for a phone interview prior to being considered for the program. WNC will be assigning SCAs to help with summer camps by May 1 so please contact us as soon as possible!

Applicants will be considered as long as there are spaces available, and applicants will be notified of their acceptance within one month of our receipt of their application. Returning Summer Camp Assistants are required to email [email protected] to express their interest in being accepted for another year. Space is limited. Thank you for your interest in volunteering!

Special Warner programs for FAMILIES AND ADULTSDRAGONFLY BIOBLITZSaturday, June 9, 10am-2pm10 a.m. Instructional overview (recommended) 11 a.m. Field Collection begins Registration deadline: June 7

Warner Nature Center is home to dozens of species of dragonflies of all sizes and colors, including some that had never been found in Minnesota until now. Join us for a fun day of dragonfly observation and collecting along Warner Nature Center’s ponds and lakes. You will learn where and when to best look for dragonflies, how to catch and handle them, and basic identification. You will also learn how to encourage these beneficial insects to visit your back yard. This will be a great family event, bring an insect net if you have one. Otherwise, nets will be available for your use. The program is ongoing during the four hours so you can stay for the entire program or leave at anytime. Bring a bag lunch. FLY FISHING FOR ADULTSJune 19-21 (Tue, Wed & Thur) 6:30–9 pmRegistration deadline: June 15

Check out this unique camp! Join WNC director, Ron Lawrenz, for three evenings to learn the basics of fly-fishing. This includes a review of equipment and how to rig it, fly tying basics and tying a fly or two, casting instruction, and finally spending an evening fishing hefty sunfish and bass with flies you have tied. All fly rods and reels are provided. Class is limited to 10 adults. $90 WNC Friends/SMM members; $100 non-members

REMINDER: To receive a Friends of Warner membership discount for summer camp, your member status must be active during the week of your camp. In order to receive your Friends discount, make sure your membership covers you through your camp dates. We will not provide refunds for Friends members once their registration is complete so become a Friend before camp registration starts!

T-SHIRTSGet Summer Camp Gear! We loved seeing everyone wearing their camp t-shirts last summer! Again this summer, each child attending multiple-day camps (not adult or family programs) will receive one Warner Nature Center Summer Camp 2018 t-shirt! If they are in multiple camps, they will receive their t-shirt their first week attending camp. T-shirts will be available in youth sizes: small to large and adult sizes: small to extra large. Please indicate on the registration form which size your child will need. If you are interested in purchasing additional 2018 (or other) t-shirts, the cost will be $15, payable by cash, check or credit card. Shirts will be on sale all summer before and after class.

Jaymes H. (Jay) Schoenberg SUMMER CAMPS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMWarner Nature Center is offering our summer camp scholarship program in honor of Jay Schoenberg again in 2018 thanks to generous donations from family members and friends of Jay. Jay was a summer camp student and later a volunteer Summer Camp Assistant for Warner Nature Center over 16 years ago. Jay passed away in a rafting accident in Alaska in 2009 and his family has generously created a scholarship fund in his honor as he had a love of nature and Warner Nature Center.

There are 2 types of scholarships available for interested applicants. Scholarships for 85% of the price are available for families currently receiving public assistance (General Assistance, Medicaid or Medical Assistance, Food Stamps, or Section 8 housing). Scholarships for 50% of the price are available for other families needing assistance. These awards are based on financial need. You will be notified of approval within three business days of receipt of application.

Scholarship recipients are eligible for one scholarship per camp participant. Due to our generous donors for this scholarship program, we allow families to apply for consecutive years for scholarships. Scholarships will include the cost of van transportation to and from SMM, if needed, but have a nominal processing fee.

Apply soon! Scholarship spots will be held until April 1. If no wait lists exist for a scholarship spot, the spot will continue to be held until camp begins. Please use the enclosed scholarship application or download it online.

Summer camp registration will begin Wednesday, February 7, at 9 a.m. We will again conduct paper registrations for 2018. Beginning February 7 at 9 a.m., you can submit your paper registration forms via email, fax, mail or in-person. Registrations will be date and time stamped by the minute and processed in the order received. Registrations will be entered within 7 business days upon receipt and you will receive an email confirmation for your camp. Please call after 7 business days if you have not received an email confirmation. Please note that with small class sizes of our camps, some camps will fill within a minute of opening up registration. If your camp is full, you will be placed on a waitlist and notified by email. Please register only one person per form. You may photocopy the original form or contact WNC for additional forms.

• Registration will close the Wednesday prior to each camp beginning. WNC staff reserve the right to cancel a camp at any time if enrollment is low and a different camp can be scheduled in its place. Customers will be contacted by phone and we will suggest alternative camps.

TRANSPORTATIONWarner can provide transportation to and from the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul for all-day (9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.) camps between July 9-August 16 for 6-14 year olds. Van transportation will not be available the first two weeks of camp (June 20-29). Transportation costs $15 daily per child. The van leaves the Science Museum at 8:45 a.m. and returns by 4:15 p.m. Van space is limited and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis so register early. Van shuttle service is contingent on a minimum number of riders registering each week. Transportation for off-site portions of WNC’s summer classes will be provided by WNC, and those transportation costs are included in the class fees. If you register for SMM van transportation, you will receive a separate email with pick-up/drop-off procedures.

CANCELLATIONSNo refunds will be made unless a cancellation is received at least three weeks prior to the beginning of camp*. WNC reserves the right to cancel any camp not meeting minimum registration requirements. If this is necessary, you will be contacted at least two weeks prior to the beginning of that class, and your fees will be refunded in full. Credit card refunds will show up as a credit from the Science Museum of Minnesota. Cash or check refunds will come as a check from the Science Museum of Minnesota.

*All cancellations will have a $30 fee for processing cancellation and refunds, regardless if you cancel three weeks prior to the beginning of class.

BEHAVIOR CODEWe expect the same respect and concern that we will show your children to be returned in-kind when they are visiting Warner. We reserve the right to expel any child from camp who is disruptive or disrespectful, or who jeopardizes her/ his safety or the safety of other camp participants. Your signing of the registration form states that you have read and understand this policy. If we have a problem with your child, you will be notified by WNC staff.

SUPERVISED SPACENo supervised space is available at WNC - please do not drop your children off early or pick them up late, as staff members are not available for extended supervision of campers. Supervised space is available at SMM before and after WNC van pick up and drop off. For more information, call the SMM Education Registrar at (651) 221-4511.

ABSENCESPlease call WNC at (651) 433-2427, ext. 10, to notify us if your child will not be coming, will be arriving late or if someone other than you is picking up your child.

CAMP SIZESPreschool camps are limited to 10 students. Camps are limited to 12 students unless noted in the camp descriptions. Each camp has one naturalist instructor and at least one volunteer. Most of our summer camp volunteers are high school or college-age students participating in our summer camp assistant program.
