Don't Drink & Deliver Smoking & Pregnancy
ALCOHOLUSE & ABUSE
We will investigate the effects of alcohol. We will identify three ways that alcohol use can have a negative effect on an unborn child
One 12 oz. can of beer, one 5 oz. glass of wine or one mixed drink with 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor are equally intoxicating.
Switching between beer, wine, and liquor will make you drunker than sticking to one type of alcohol.
Time is the only cure. It takes the body about one hour to eliminate a beer or a glass of wine. Give a drowsy drunk a cup of coffee and all you do is create a wide-awake drunk.
Food in the stomach merely delays the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream. A full stomach is not a defense against heavy drinking.
There are dozens of factors that affect reaction to alcohol — gender, body weight, time of day, body chemistry, etc.
We Thought We Were Invincible
How Does Alcohol Effect Me?
1. Speed of drinking- quicker = more intoxicated2. Presence of food in the stomach- empty stomach = more intoxicated3. Body Weight
- lighter person = more intoxicated4. Drinking History/Tolerance
- little tolerance = more intoxicated
How Does Alcohol Effect Me?
5. The drinker’s expectations- expect to get drunk = more
intoxicated7. General state of emotional and physical
health- break-up, death, or poor health = feel negative effects of alcohol
8. Gender differences- female = more intoxicated
9. Other drugs- mix alcohol with drugs = potential for deadly effects
Effects On The Body
Vision: Alcohol relaxes eye muscles, which make it harder to focus and see clearly. Blurred vision is often a result of drinking alcohol.
Reaction Time: Drinking alcohol slows down reaction time.
How would that affect a person’s driving ability?
Effects continued
Coordination: Drinking alcohol affects a person’s ability to do motor skills, such as catching a ball or walking in a straight line.
Is coordination required
to drive a car safely?
Drivers who have been drinking:
Feel more confident of self and driving skills
Feel more aware and feel reflexes are better
May drive faster than normal
Drinking and Driving Statistics
Alcohol-related car accidents account for 32% of the deaths in car crashes.
Every day, 32 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.
In 2010, one person was killed every 51 minutes in a alcohol-related car accident.

Drugged Driving
According to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated
10.5 million people over the age of 12 reported driving under the influence of an illicit drug during the year prior to being surveyed.

Think About It
Do you think musical artists should be allowed to talk about illegal activities in their songs? Why or why not?
Have you ever been around someone that is drunk? How do they act? Would you want to be driving on the road with this
person? What can you do to prevent someone from drinking
and driving? If you are drinking, what are some ways you can
avoid drinking and driving? Wiz Khalifa says “think about the big picture.” What
does he mean?
Binge Drinking
Binge drinking: heavy consumption of alcohol in a short period of time Men: 5 or more drinks in one night Women: 4 or more drinks in one night
Statistics: Approximately, 1,400 college students deaths a year 70,000 cases of sexual assault or date rape
(reported) More than 100,000 students have reported they are
too intoxicated to know if they consented to sex or if they were raped
Do teens feel the pressure to drink large amounts of alcohol? -examples

FAS: severe birth defects present in babies born to mothers who drink alcohol during their pregnancy; leading cause of mental retardation
Each year in the United States, up to 40,000 babies are born with FAS
About 1 in 12 pregnant women drink during pregnancy
About 1 in 30 pregnant women report binge drinking
FAS
Women who binge drink or drink heavily greatly increase the risk of alcohol-related damage to their babies
When a mother consumes alcohol, it is absorbed into the bloodstream at the same rate for the infant as it is absorbed for the mother.
Problems could include:
•Mental retardation•Birth defects•Abnormally small & do not catch up on growth as they get older•Abnormal facial features•Growth problems•Trouble remembering•Trouble learning•Vision or hearing problems•Behavior problems
Flat mid face, smooth philtrum, underdeveloped jaw, thin upper lip, small head
