The Book Two Central Goals: Extinguish all independent thought-

control all people

Continuous Warfare=Continuous Peace: No real threat of outside domination, but the constant threat of war makes the Party the “savior and protector”-no rebellions=internal peace

Technology and Science are only used to spy- not for innovation or for improvement of lives

Greatest threat is freedom of thought within the Party: refusal to practice doublethink

Questions to Consider Steven Natto: Why are Winston and Julia so quick to agree to join the

Brotherhood? After hearing all of O’Brien’s questions on p.172-173 wouldn’t you want some time to decide if this is the right decision for you? Explain how has Winston changed since the beginning in the book to get him to this point.

Cari and Jason: How has Julia effected Winston's actions in the book, and have you noted any changes in his personality? Do you think that there is anything that Winston wouldn't have done had it not been for Julia?

Josh: Evaluate the privacy of Winston and Julia's affairs/dealings within Mr. Charrington's shop. Does the shop actually provide protection from surveillance or is it simply a way for Winston and Julia to "feel” like they're not being watched? Aside from being a Prole, is there any guarantee that Mr. Charrington will not inform the Inner Party of their "traitorous" actions?

Exit SlipAfter the first chapter, a lot of you

asked what was Hate Week? Well, now we finally know. So in your own words, please describe Hate Week AND tell me what happened to the war campaign during Hate Week (why did everyone in the Party have to work 90 hours in one week?).

Place it in the bin on your way out.
