Warm UpAnswer these on a sheet of loose leaf paper. I will come

around and check them off on my grade sheet. Be working when the bell rings!

1. What rights do you think ALL Americans should have?

2. What rights do you think (this is just a guess!) are actually protected by our government?

3. Why does it matter if we know what our legal rights are?

Before we watch a video…We need to know what these are…

• Constitution – document that set up gov’t, spells out our rights

• Amendments – changes/additions to the Constitution

• Bill of Rights – First 10 amendments – protect rights of individuals!

• Civil Liberties – freedoms we all have in USA, protected by law

Why is it important to know your rights?

• Before we watch…write this down:– What rights does Darren have?– What amendments apply?

What are your rights? (these are just a few…!)

• Fourth Amendment – NO

unreasonable searches or seizures (taking your stuff)

– usually need a warrant

What are your rights? (these are just a few…!)

• Fifth Amendment – right to remain

silent (“plead the fifth”)

What are your rights? (these are just a few…!)

• Sixth Amendment – right to an attorney

-- speedy trial

If we have these rights, what responsibilities come with them?

• Your task…– With your partner, sort the following things into 2,

3, or 4 categories. Use whatever criteria you like. If you’re not sure what something means, leave it

out and we’ll discuss it.

Civic Duty v. Civic Responsibility

• Civic Duty – things required by law for the benefit of the country

• Civic Responsibility – things you SHOULD do to help the country, be a good citizen

• Now…try regrouping them based on these categories
