• Unrest in Texas

• The Law of April 6, 1830, marked a turning point in the relationship between the Texas colonists and the Mexican government.

• Texans resented the presence of the Mexican troops. They were also upset about having to pay new taxes.

SANTA ANNA’S RISE TO POWER

• Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born in Mexico in 1794. He had managed to work well with all the changes in government, including those during the shift of powers between Spain and Mexico.

CONFLICT AT GALVESTON

• George Fisher, a Mexican official stationed in Texas was to help with the collection of custom duties.

• Many of the shippers resented the government’s interference in their business.

Bradburn Increases Tensions

• Colonel Bradburn was sent into Texas to enforce the laws that had been overlooked before 1830.

• He also forced settlers to provide free materials and labor for the construction of a new fort at Anahuac and used colonists’ slaves to help with his public works program.

Turtle Bayou Resolutions

• In this resolutions, the colonists pledged their continued loyalty to Mexico. They stated their support for Santa Anna, who appeared to be on the same side as the Texans because he claimed to favor the constitution of 1824.

The Disturbance at Anahuac

• William Logan came to Anahuac form the US seeking two of his slaves. Bradburn sheltered the slaves and refused to release them without seeing proof of ownership.

• Logan hired William Barret Travis to represent him. Travis made Bradburn angry and Bradburn had him arrested.

Turtle Bayou Resolutions

The Texans make a resolution (a formal statement of a decision, opinion, or course of action by an official group) to the Mexican government.

The colonists pledged their continued loyalty to Mexico. They also stated their support for Santa Anna.

The Battle of Velasco

• This is the first conflict in which Mexican soldiers and Texans shot at one another.

• The Battle of Velasco resulted in casualties on both sides. Ten Texans and five Mexicans were killed.

• When they arrived in Anahuac, they discovered that the conflict had already been resolved.

The Conventions of 1832 and 1833

• 56 delegates met in San Felipe in October 1832 to draft a set of resolutions.

• Their resolutions pledged support of the true Mexican government under the Constitution of 1824.

• They also asked to repeal the Law of April 6, 1830.

• They also wanted Coahuila y Tejas to be divided so that each territory could have its own government.

Austin in Mexico

• Austin traveled to Mexico City to deliver the Texans’ resolutions to officials.

• Santa Anna agreed to repeal the law prohibiting immigration to Texas, he agreed to improve the mail service and the court system, and he promised fairer taxes on goods coming from the United States.

Austin’s Arrest

• Austin’s letter to the Texans’ was intercepted, and he was arrested for treason.

• Austin spent a year in prison, and once he was released he stayed under house arrest for several months.

Mexican Troops Return to Texas

• Santa Anna had a constitution written that placed power in his hands.

• In 1835 Santa Anna sent his brother-in-law, General Martin Perfecto de Cos, to command troops in the north, including Texas.

• Travis assembled 25 men to help get Tenorio and his soldiers to surrender.

• They wanted to arrest some of the Texans and take the cannon away from the citizens of Gonzales.

• Once Texans heard about Gonzales they were ready to volunteer to help.

• The army numbered close to 600 by the time it reached San Antonio.

The Consultation

• Delegates gathered at San Felipe for a meeting to decide what action the Texans should take.

• On November 6, 1835 the consultation voted against an immediate declaration of independence by a vote of 33 to 15.

• The provisional government was set up with Henry Smith as governor.
