Energy

What do calories mean???

Energy1 food calorie = 4184 joules of

energyLet’s calculate approximately how many Calories we burn from taking the stairs to get

to class.

Calorie Activity

Energy (Calorie) Activity1) Calculate your weight in kilograms

(1 kilogram = ~2 pounds)2) Multiply your weight in kg by 10. This

is the approximate amount of force you exert on the ground in Newtons.

3) Measure the height of one step in centimeters and count how many

steps there are in one flight of stairs. Multiply the two numbers.

4) Divide this answer by 100 to get the height of a flight of stairs in meters.

Energy (Calorie) Activity5) Multiply your answers from #2 and

#4 together to calculate the amount of energy, in joules, that you need to use to climb a

flight of stairs.6) Using #5, approximately

how many Calories would this burn? (1 Calorie = 4184 joules)

Step Up7) You will be timing each other for the

time it takes to climb one flight of stairs.

8) Make sure

you write down the

time.

9) Go!

Post-Steps10) Divide your answer from #5 by the

time it took to climb the stairs. 11) What units is your answer in?

Post-Steps12) Based on your answer from #5 and

6, how much time (in seconds and minutes) would it take for you

personally to burn the Calories from an entire caramel apple?

13) How many times would you have to climb the stairs to do that?
