Our MissionThe Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, SalisburyUniversity is dedicated to exhibiting, collecting andpromoting wildfowl art and wildfowling heritage.

The Museum will achieve this mission by:• Preserving and enhancing the legacy of Lemuel andStephen Ward.

• Reflecting the heritage of the maritime communitiesof the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and thosethroughout the United States and abroad.

• Exploring through exhibits, publications andprograms the relevance and impact of wildfowl onnatural history and human society.

• Providing environmental education to all age groups to support intellectual investigations of achanging environment on wildfowling heritage and communities.

• Ensuring the vitality of the Ward World WildfowlCarving Competition and the internationalcommunity of artists who advance artistic excellence.

• Fostering partnerships to promote art, nature andtradition through targeted outreach activities andsharing of museum resources and experience.

Director’s MessageFiscal Year 16 (FY16) was a hardworking and

productive year for the Ward Museum. Constructionof our new Legacy Center addition was in full swing,interior renovations occurred and fundraising formore improvements continued. We reached a newrecord of service in our Education Department – over21,000 persons. Our signature special events exceededexpectations and drew in new audiences, and welaunched several new initiatives to provide even morecommunity and regional involvement. Our collectionsgrew with generous donations of master artworks andwildfowl collectibles. The board of directors approveda new mission statement and strategic plan for FY17-19. It was a big year for the Ward Museum, and we are thrilled that so many new supporters havecommitted to our success in the future. Be sure toshare our story with others and invite them to Come Fly With Us!

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMSFY16 marked a high point in the Museum’s educationalservice – with 21,231 persons served! This is highest level ofeducational service in organizational history. Our year-roundeducational opportunities are for all ages. Through a range oflearning opportunities and platforms, we support theexploration and discovery of wildfowl art, the natural worldand regional cultural traditions.

Through field trips and in-school visits, the Ward Museuminvests in the educational foundation of our community throughprograms for pre-K through grade 12. Using several curricula,Flying WILD, Growing Up WILD and Pass It On: Cultural Traditionsof the Lower Eastern Shore, we are able to bring lessons thatconnect an appreciation for the natural world with regionalhistory and heritage into area schools. Our programs arealigned with the Common Core and support the Next GenerationScience Standards and Arts Integration initiatives.

The highlight of the youth program is the immenselypopular Drop In Art Saturday Program, bringing regional artiststogether with area families for a free hands-on art experience atthe Museum. In FY16, a new weekly program for ages 0-5 waslaunched: Drop In Art, Jr. The Education Department also offersweekly birding sessions on the grounds of the Museum throughits e-Bird Tuesday program. The Museum Carving Club meetstwice a month and has maintained active membership in FY16.

Whether it is through an immersive hands-on art classwith a master artist or professional development training forlocal school teachers, the Museum offers adult learners high-quality, specialized trainings in their field of interest.Participants and presenters motivate learning and discoveryon a variety of subjects connected to wildfowl art, naturephotography, environmental education, cultural heritage andother related topics.

WARD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPThe 46th Annual Ward World Wildfowl CarvingCompetition was held April 22-24, 2016, at the Roland E.Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, MD. This year’sevent was successful, with competitors and entries on parwith prior years. The Living Legend Award Dinner was alsoa success, with Rich Smoker, Del Herbert and Todd Wohltreceiving honors this year. Seminars, workshops anddemonstrations continue to make this event a cornerstone ofthe wildfowl art community.

CHESAPEAKE WILDFOWL EXPOThe 18th Annual Chesapeake Wildfowl Expo was heldOctober 10, 2015, on the grounds of the Ward Museum.The Chesapeake Wildfowl Expo pays tribute to decoys fromthe past while encouraging the carving of new ones. Withcontemporary and antique decoy competitions, educationalprograms, waterfowling heritage marketplace, food, and afestival atmosphere, the event continues to be a successfullaunch of the Museum’s fall season. The 2015 event sawstable entries in the number of competitors in the decoycompetition compared to prior year.

ART IN NATURE PHOTO FESTIVAL The Fifth Annual Art In Nature Photo Festival was heldAugust 7-9, 2015, at the Ward Museum. This newest of theMuseum’s annual art events has brought many new visitors,artists and nature enthusiasts in contact with the WardMuseum for the first time. The event includes a photographycontest, seminars and workshops for amateur andprofessionals alike. There were 712 photographs entered inthe competition by 124 photographers.

CHANGING EXHIBITSThe changing exhibits program brought a variety ofnationally renowned artists, rare artifacts, thoughtfulinterpretation and regional tradition bearers together instimulating displays in the LaMay and Welcome galleries,as well as temporary displays around the region.

COLLECTIONSThe Ward Museum maintains its accreditation with theAmerican Alliance of Museums, the highest nationalrecognition for a museum. Accreditation signifies the WardMuseum has met and exceeded the highest standards ofthe museum field and is among the best institutions in thecountry. FY16 included transition of all collection recordsto Past Perfect, the museum software standard forcollection management.

In FY16, 106 items were added to the Museum’spermanent collection of art and artifacts, includingartworks by Ira Hudson, Paul Rhymer, Lem Ward, EddieWozny and Charles Harper. The total value of newaccessioned items for FY16 is $71,655. All gifts of art tothe permanent collection of the Ward Museum becomeassets of Salisbury University. Since the Museum’saffiliation with SU in 2000, the collection value hasincreased from $3.7M to $6.3M.

A major donation to the collection began in FY16 fromC.A. Porter and Patricia L. Hopkins. Over the next year,the Hopkins family are donating the majority of their vastdecoy collection. Many of the decoys will be added to thepermanent collection, others will be sold with proceedsbenefiting an acquisitions fund to support purchase ofwaterfowling artifacts for the permanent collection.

In FY16, more than 500 volunteersrecorded 7,623 hours of volunteer service with the Museum.These combined hours are equivalent to $203,075 ofdonated time and 3.5 full-time staff positions.

SALISBURY UNIVERSITY STUDENTSIn FY16, the Ward Museum hosted 11 Salisbury

University students as interns and graduate assistants.Students support curatorial research and exhibitdevelopment, archival and library services, educationalprograms, public relations, administrative and non-profitbusiness functions, and special events. SU students alsovolunteer at events and serve as AmeriCorps members.The total hours of service provided by SU students inFY16 was 5,834.

ABOUT THE WARD MUSEUMThe Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art is nestled next toSchumaker Pond in Salisbury, MD. The Museum featuresthe world’s largest and finest public collection of decorativeand antique decoys. The Museum was named in honor ofStephen and Lemuel Ward, whose vision and artistry incarving decoys pioneered the transition of the decoy from aworking tool to an expressive wildfowl sculpture. With its 4.5 acre waterfront facility and 12,000 square feet ofexhibition space, the Museum is a major destination fortourists and a resource for local residents who enjoy its year-round offerings. Through educational programs and services,the Museum serves 20,000 school children and adultsannually. In 2011, the Ward Museum was accredited by theAmerican Association of Museums for the first time.Salisbury University’s 2012 BEACON study indicates thatthe Museum generates $6.1 million in economic impact onthe regional community annually. This financial relevance,coupled with the Museum’s educational and culturalinfluence, solidifies the Museum’s position as a major centerfor community engagement and investment.
