Provide exercise and help maintain balance and coordination Taking part in garden-based activities, boosting strength and stamina and improving fine motor skills, improving the appetite and helping sleep.

Helping to maintain memory and cognitive functioningEncouraging people to nurture plants and wildlife helping their understanding, reasoning and perception.

Helping people to reminiscenceBeing out in the garden and taking part in garden-based activities can help people reminisce about the past.

Improve social interactionThrough the layout of garden spaces, which encourage communal activities, will help to retain or improve social interaction skills.

THE BENEFITSLANDSCAPES IN HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENTS

Secure garden areas for care and dementia residents are a key aspect of a caring environment.

Our holistic approach has provided carefully considered design solutions which aim to address the following key elements:

HIGHFIELD NURSING HOMESAFFRON WALDEN

Highfield Nursing Home offers a restful, sensory garden within the outdoor courtyard of the single storey home.

A large water fountain creates gentle sound, climbing clematis and honeysuckle create fragrant sheltered walkways, and bird feeders and on-looking seating create a perfect space to absorb the movements of nature.

The landscape works supported the design by the architectural team for the care home building, resulting in a balanced environment providing the highest standards of care inside and out.

Landscape design carried out included the creation of informal private patios, large communal seating and activity areas, all of which provide a multifunctional garden with high amenity value.

The landscape has been designed to provide level wonder paths, suitable for wheelchair access, with stopping points along the way.

Other features include a well lit garden at night, water features and a formal ‘grow your own’ garden of herbs and vegetables. These works supported the Architectural teams building design. Working together we created a harmonious environment for residents.

Minster Grange care home provides residential and nursing care for 73 elderly residents who may be frail or living with age related dementia. Additionally there are 10 beds for younger persons with physical disabilities.

With this in mind, the landscape team created an outdoor space suitable for various ages and abilities.

In order for residents to use their garden safely and securely, adequate boundaries were included, as well as interesting activity areas, providing opportunity for daily outdoor activity.

The spacious gardens were carefully planned to be fully accessible to all residents. Plenty of seating areas offer residents pleasant spaces to relax and enjoy the calm and tranquil gardens.

WAVERLEY GRANGEFARNHAM

Waverley Grange, a purpose built care home, owned and managed by Bupa, is located in Farnham on the North Downs.

The home is set on a particularly sensitive site as it is situated in a woodland area which includes several protected trees.

A lot of considerations were taken into account to ensure that the team produced a suitable and complimentary landscaping scheme for the 54 bed Arts and Crafts style Care Home.

The landscape provides a non institutional setting which is comfortable and welcoming.

STISTED HALLESSEX

A full landscaping scheme was required as part of the works to the Stisted Hall Care Home in Essex, owned and maintained by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institute.

The team were commissioned to transform the unused curtilage of the Dementia Wing from a neglected rubble courtyard, to a stimulating activity garden designed for residents living with dementia.

Several of the existing garden features were retained and an inclusive, nostalgic garden was formed around these to create new activity areas, sheltered seating and the introduction of fragrance to promote memory and colourful vibrant plant species to fill the garden with colour and life.
