Poverty Simulation September 10, 2014 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (lunch provided) University of Illinois – Springfield The Recreation & Athletic Center (TRAC) 2171 University Drive Springfield, IL 62703 The Community AcƟon Poverty SimulaƟon (CAPS) is a unique tool that can be used to educate everyone, from policy mak- ers to local community leaders, about the day to day realiƟes of life with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress. During a simulaƟon, parƟcipants role-play the lives of low-in- come families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior ciƟzens trying to maintain their self su- ciency. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessiƟes during the simulaƟon while interact- ing with various community resources. Although it uses “play” money, cƟonal scenarios, and Ɵme limits, CAPS is not a game. It is a simulaƟon tool that enables parƟcipants to view poverty from dierent angles in an expe- rienƟal seƫng. Filmed over the course of one winter in Portland, Oregon, American Winter presents an inƟmate and emoƟonally evocaƟve snapshot of the state of our economy as it is playing out in many American families. The War on Poverty Panel Discussion November 12, 2014 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (lunch provided) University of Illinois – Springfield Public Affairs Center (PAC) Rooms C – D 2200 Ernest Hemingway Drive Springfield, IL 62703 The panel will explore diverse perspecƟves on where the War on Poverty has been, where it is now, and where it is going. Part one of the panel discussion will set up a historical frame- work for understanding the social, economic and poliƟcal condiƟons that created the War on Poverty, and its impact on anƟ-poverty public policy making. Part two of the panel discussion will explore the policy and program intervenƟons that grew out of the War on Poverty, and their impact on eradicaƟng poverty. Part three of the panel discussion will disƟlled lessons learned for future policy making and exam- ine the pathway towards sustained progress toward address- ing poverty in the 21st Century. War on Poverty Forum FiŌy years ago, President Lyndon Johnson declared “uncondiƟonal War on Poverty”. Depending on your ideological leanings, the ensuing eort was either “a catastrophe” or “lived up to our best hopes as a people who value the dignity and potenƟal of every human being”. What is clear is that the declaraƟon set in moƟon an important, complex, and oŌen contenƟous phase in the history of reform in the United States. In celebraƟon of this historical event the Illinois Associ- aƟon of Community AcƟon Agencies in collaboraƟon with the University of Illinois - Springeld InsƟtute for Legal, LegislaƟve and Policy Studies are hosƟng a War on Poverty Forum.
