• US troops have committed through 2014, though the Obama administration has expressed interest in ending U.S. combat role in 2013

• Recently, increasing instances of attacks on US troops by people within ranks of Afghan military or police

• 2264 US troops have died in Afghanistan as of Wednesday, 8/21/13.
