Summer Term 1. Our topic this coming half term is ‘Animals’. During the first few weeks we will be looking at ‘Cold Animals’ that live in the Antarctic and Arctic. We will look at ‘Hot Animals’ that live in the Sahara Desert and the Rainforest, later in the term. We will start our ‘cold animal’ topic by looking at different species of penguins, learning the names and characteristics by making life size art and measuring their heights. As well as measuring in maths, we will look at ice, water and melting through capacity work. We are going on an Arctic exploration in our role play area, where we will look after Arctic seals in the seal sanctuary! When the heat rises in the classroom, our role play area will turn into a jungle where we will pretend to be different animals and help the safari vet! It might be difficult to spot animals in our room once we’ve learnt about camouflage, so keep your eyes peeled! It’s possible that our topic will end looking at woodland animals or insects/minibeasts, alll depending on how the children lead our planning! We will keep you informed. This term we would like to take the children on a school trip. We will let you know our plans as soon as possible, so watch this space! I (Miss Tams) am really looking forward to getting to know the children more and supporting them through their third and last term in Reception! We’ve got a short but busy half term, we can’t wait to get started. We hope you have had an egg-cellent Easter break! Miss Tams & Mrs Smith Show and Tell: This term, Show and Tell will be on Fridays. Forest Schools

Forest Schools takes place on Friday mornings. It is an opportunity for us all to go outside and use nature as a resource

for learning. We always wear our wellies, regardless of the weather as it helps to get us in the ’Forest Schools’ mood! Please remember to have wellies and a waterproof coat (with a hood) in school as we will be going outdoors whatever the weather! Our

Forest Schools activities this term will include... A rainbow colour hunt, leaf printing, making mini beast homes, a tree inspection of

the school grounds and more!

PE reminder We have PE twice a week, please can you make sure that you have your PE kit at

school everyday as we sometimes change our PE days, depending on what else is

happening in school.

As we are starting the summer term, please can the children have a pair of trainers for outdoor games and sports.

Your PE kit should include: White t-shirt, dark blue/black shorts,

Plimsolls and a pair of trainers for outdoor PE.

Please also make sure that every item of the PE kit is clearly named. We have had a few cases of missing PE items. If you come across any lost items, please pop them into school so we can reunite them with their

owners! Thank you for your

support.

If you have a spare hour or two in the morning or afternoon and would like to help in school, please let us know as we are always in need of a helping hand!

The sun has got his hat on… hopefully! If we are lucky, we may be in for some sunny weather this term! So if the weather changes before half term please make sure your child has everything they need in school: • Water bottle • A light jacket in case of showers Every year, York Against Cancer donate sun hats for the children in Reception. We will name the hats and keep them in school so the children will always have access to one. Please feel free to bring your own in to school if you would prefer. The children will take their hats home at the end of the school year.

Sun cream - Please can the children have sun cream applied before school, so that they are not using sun cream at school. It is quite tempt-ing for the children to swap creams and spend a long time applying it, not always in the right places! Their skin will be better protected when covered by you before school, using a daily cream. If you would like to make other arrangements due to allergies, just let me know.

The children have the opportunity to play outside throughout the day - rain or shine! Everyone will need a coat in school everyday. It might be an idea to leave a spare raincoat at school, that’s what I do! Thank you, Miss Tams
