It was held in all over the Islands which include Bambooflat, Wimberlygunj, Mannarghat, Ferrargunj, Tushnabad, Little Andaman, Diglipur, Mayabunder, Rangat, Car Nicobar, Campbell Bay, Nancowrie including Port Blair hq station. There were total 20,670 candidates and as per pre- liminary details about 75% to 80 % candidates were present. A copy of the Question Paper and its Answer Key will be uploaded on the website www.and.nic.in by late evening to- day itself. Anyone can challenge the Answer Key by paying chal- lenge fee @ Rs. 1,000 for each ques- tion, at the PBMC Headquarter during working hours on 22nd & 23rd January. In case the challenge is found genuine, double of the chal- lenge fee will be returned and the answer key will be corrected for the particular question. However if the challenge is not found to be genu- ine, the challenge fee will be for- feited. The Answer Key can be challenged by anyone irrespective of the fact whether he/she is a can- didate or not. Accordingly outsta- tions persons can also file their chal- lenges through their friends/rela- tives at Port Blair. The final Answer Key, with or without correction, will be uploaded on the website on 24th January i.e. prior to start of the evaluation process. The PBMC had not scrutinized the applications as informed ear- lier. Based on performance in the written examination, candidates equal to five times of the vacancies under each category will be shortlisted. As earlier informed, in case two or more candidates get equal marks in written examina- tion, the first tie breaker will be date of birth where the older candi- date will be given priority over the younger candidate. In case of fur- ther tie, the second tie breakers will be draw of lots under the supervi- sion of any officer of the A&N Ad- ministration. The scrutiny about eligibility and verification of the documents will be restricted to the candidates to be shortlisted on the basis of the written examination. The short-listed candidates, who are found to be non-eligible as per the notified RRs, will not be al- lowed to undergo the Typing Test. Hence unless the eligibility condi- tions are fulfilled and Type Test is qualified, the mere securing higher merit in the recruitment examina- tion will not guarantee selection. Here it is mentioned the Typing Test would be of qualifying nature only and the marks obtained in the Typing Test will not be counted in merit. It had already been decided that no recruitment to be made against the vacant posts of Tax Col- lectors. Accordingly the present re- cruitment process has been re- stricted to 33 vacant posts of Lower Grade Clerk (LGC) only. However the Council has taken up with the A&N Administration to re-desig- nate the 20 vacant posts of Tax Col- lectors as Lower Grade Clerk. Ac- cordingly, based on the scores ob- tained in the examination, a panel may be prepared and in the event of approval of the Competent Au- thority for re-designation of 20 posts, these can also be filled up from such panel. The validity of the panel will be one year from the date of announcement of result, said Mr Yashpal Garg, Secretary, PBMC, in a release to EOI. (Contd. on page-2) Destiny’s child: He has chiseled a ‘Maha’ name for himself as an artist LOKNATH PATRA M ahananda Gomasta, called ‘Maha’ by ones close to him, is a two-time recipient of the LG’s Commendation Certifi- cate (2001 & 2008) with two State Awards (2004 &2005), whose life re- sembles a script from a blockbuster movie. Born in 1963 at Ramnagar, for fees and subsistence he worked as a farm hand and errand boy over years to complete school as his poor parents could not meet his expenses. His life revolved only around Ramnagar, Kalighat and Diglipur, through arduous 25 kilometre treks combating, rivulets, forests, hills and snakes. After school in 1986, he saw Port Blair for the first time, where he was encouraged to go to Kolkata to study in an Art College by a teacher who had seen the artistic spark in him and who also gave him 500 rupees, which he reluctantly accepted. He boarded a ship, unaware where he was going or what destiny had in store for him. He encountered a few students from Andaman on the ship and followed them uninvited not knowing where to go or what to do. They took pity on the boy and sheltered and fed him at Kolkata for a few days. Be- fore guilt was taking over his soul, the boys took him to Rabindra Bharati Uni- versity at Jorasanko and lied about the ship from Andaman getting delayed as application dates were over. Passing the entrance test, he joined the college, but his ordeal continued. No place to stay, for six months he lived in a shanty at Dhapa near Sealdah right atop the sewage dump of Kolkata city, where raw hides were cleaned. Stench, squalor, and painful skin crabs on his skin became his life before and after col- lege, where he worked cleaning hides to fend for himself. His college mates, from whom he had hid his address out of shame, found out his painful secret and got him a seat in the hostel helped by the student’s union. Life smiled on him a little then, as he got contract jobs from leather facto- ries to make parts. His monetary situation improved, with destiny shaping his next path he completed the 5- year course with distinction and returned to Port Blair to join as an Artist and Designer at IP& T Department. He lives in Prothrapur with his wife Maya and two daughters Monami and Meghna. EOI had a chat with Mr. Mahananda Gomasta at his office on the first floor of the IP& T headquarters. On his table stood a head of Tathagata sculpted by him in wood looking at us with kind eyes, the lifelike expression blessing us the way he has blessed ‘Maha’. EOI: Good Morning Mr. Gomasata. You are just back from this path breaking exhibition ‘Viswaroopa’ with your ‘Aranyak’ collection of wood sculptures at Birla Academy of Arts and Culture, Kolkata. Great reviews in the Na- tional Media have welcomed your creative prowess. Mr. Gomasta: Good morning. Oh yes, to me it was like living a dream to be part of this mega art show and the deluge of appreciation from the Who’s Who of the art fraternity and connoisseurs. EOI: For a child who had never even seen Port Blair till he finished school, reaching to where you are today, is like a story of trials and tribulations, the agony and the ec- stasy. Is not it? Mr. Gomasta: (Lets out a deep sign). You know, the day I was to depart for Port Blair on the way to Kolkata, my artistic mother’s squiggles and doodles that had planted the seed of art in me was very sad that she had nothing to give me. Not defeated, she rummaged through the house to find an old One Rupee Note, which she thought would end my misery. I still remember her innocent eyes welled up in tears of joy with her contribu- tion and sadness of my leaving her to an unknown land. I still have the note with me because it is as priceless as Mona Lisa.
