SY: luL1:r;: t)',i.i;i:.,:s j On Saturday, October 24, Was the beginning of the second half of the season. All standings began again and the points start from O. This gives every team a ssccond chance. To begin the morning we had the Aliens vs the Angals. The game was their tuffcst battle of the year and the first time we were forced into overtime, for the Junior League. Playing tough offense for the Aliens were Nichole O'Hara with 4, MacKenzie Krey with 6. MacKenzie was also very tough on defense and unfortunately fouled out. Her help on defense was Katelyn Krey, Kelly O'Hara.Jennifer Bcacker, Daisy Tr.:.jillo, Jacqlyn Klenk, and Merideth Gleason. I wouid also like to thank Mrs. Gleason and Mrs. trujillo for being voluntc:c:r coaches. On the Angels side their offense came out strong with almost every member scoring a point. \¼: had Nicole Davies 4,Laura Lopez 2, Wendy Urquiza Z, Amanda Miranda 4. Helping the Angels to the overtime win on defense were TC Ramirez and Sonia Reynoso. The final score waslZ to 10 Angels.

The second game for the Juniors was just as competitive. It was between the Twisters and Panthers. On offense for the two teams we had Kendra Dower with 2, Miriah Madson 4, Caroline VanDen Bosch 2, Stephanie Vazquez 6, Cory Bieber 4. The defense was supplied by Annie Romano,Tiffany Madson,Kathy Gilardo, Marisol Garcia, Erin Gschwind, Cristina Robledo, Melissa Robledo, Katie Rodriguez, and Paige Rodriguez.. The final score of the game was 16 to Z. 'twisters.

For the 12:00 o'clock gtame for the Seniors we hasd the Angels vs the Aliens.\¼: were very happy to have an Aliens team due to their last twO

forfeits. The game was played 5 on 5 due to the absence of many people from both teams. Both teams hung in there but the Angels came up with the final win. Scoring for the two teams we had Erika Aguilar with 8,

Ashley Harris Z, April Holstein ZS (WOW!),Sarah Wesley 4, Joanne Sanchez 5, Christina Gariga 4. Hustly up and down the court were 1iara Davila, Lynn Kummer.Jackie Aguilar and Iffath Hussain. Thje final score for that game was 35 to 13, Angels.

Unfortunately the second half of the afternoon was not as productive. \¼: had a forfeit by the Twisters which has caused us to combine the Twisters and the Aliens and thety will now all be called the Aliens. The Tweisters who came out to the game were Kerry Masterson, Sian Mendez, and Kimberly Smietana. For the Panthers we had Nina Kanoon,Collccn Ward, Nicole Gomez, Ashlee Hinton, Margaret Cooney, Nicole Rivera, Mary Gallery.

✓ "~,~ IISW9 ✓ Well, I'd have to say that i'm almost beyond proud of all the girls. The way they have been playing shows not only great improvement, but maturity, a great deal of teamwork, sporunanship, and hardworkl I know I'm not the only one that has noticed chis change. The parents and coaches have also. Like I said on Saturday, "keep up the good work ladies because you almost look like the WNBAI"

To start off the amazing and wonderful games that were played on saturday, at 9:00 we had Aliens vs. Angels. This game was unpredictable. Throughout the game the score was close and the final score was 14-lZ Angels, their first winl. Great job to both tcamsl Playing for the Aliens were: Meghaa Cbovaaec, Amaada Golec, Hope Gomez, Ashley Ruygrok, Laurie Arroyo ( ,Z pts. ), Sarah Br11adt, Kell Kohlnodorfe (JO pts.), Kimberly Koblndorfe, Mercesdes Kos. Playing for the Angels were: Kathi Jensen, Mallory McDoaagh, Llcana Little, Mollyl-lenty(,Z pts.), Bernadette Hansen (8

pts.), Veronica Ziomeck (4pts.).

For the second game of the day which was 9:45, it was Twisters vs. Panthers (27-Z Panthers). Although you may not think from the score, I would have to say that thisg11mc was one of the best games of the season so far. The amount of teamwork, lisstening skills, and sportmanship on both teams was great! Playing for the 'Iwisters were: Felicia Hi/gen, Elizabeth Kmet, Jacque/ya Burton, Nia Schcxaider, Sbaai Mendez, Lauren Corso, Alist1ya fiazquez (2 pt!i.), and Gabriella Col/iaswortb. Playing for the Panthers were:Sophia Kaaooa, /et1sica Romero(S pu.), Chelsea Gschwind (6 pt!i.), AaaaLiese Eatoa (6 pts.), Katie Buuea (Z pts.), Dana Hatter (2 pts.), Paige Resendiz, Sioban Sahl (6 pta.), and Meagan Rodriguez. Again great job and keep up the good work to all!l!

Richard a. Valentin

April 20, 1911 - October 25, 1998 If·

It was summer ... 1931 ... the heart of The Great Depression. Across the country people were suffering. Men were out of work. People were hungry. Families struggled. The outlook was bleak.

That summer a 20 year old high school graduate, Dick Valentin, was unemployed and looking for something to do. A friend, Steve Klinger, asked him to coach the St Benedict's 8th grade baseball team. Baseball was one of Dick's life-long passions and he accepted . They placed second that season and asked Dick to keep working with them over the summer. He happily agreed. After the season they formed 'The Ramblers" for the summer and played plck up games in Paul Revere Park whenever they could.

As the Ramblers practiced and payed little did they know they were being watched. Carl Buehler and his son Robert watched from their office windows and often $St in the grandstands during their lunch. In October of 1931 Robert Buehler invited Dick to his office and asked if he could organ~te a football league. Dick said that he could, but he was rea11}' looking for a job. Robert Buehler, then president of the Victc>r Adding Machine Co., told Dick that would be his job. Dick couldn't believe it, $20 a week (big money in those days) to organize a football league. When he told his family they all laughed. Undaunted, Dick hit the streets the next day. He looked on the streetcomers, in the schoolyards and by the parks. In about 10 days he had six teams of 12-13-14 year olds. Those original teams were the Vagabonds (Addison and Hoyne), Midgets (Bell and Grace), Mercurys (Irving Park and Leavitt), Trojans (Cleveland School area), Reveres (Campbell and Grace) and Ghosts (Bateman School area).

The first game in the Club's history was played on October 19, 1931 between the Gallopping Ghosts and the Trojans. The game ended in a 13-13 tie. Dick and BIii Banedt reffed that first game and every game that season. They had just one football, which Dick purchased on Maxwell Street for $3.00 (he got them down from $6.00!). The teams played until early December and ended with an award presentation in the new Paul Revere Fieldhouse. Chicago Bear football star, Hall of Farner Red Grange presented medals to the league champion Reveres. Mr. Buehler announced that he wanted the club to continue and the crowd went wild!

Dick Valentin was the father and grandfather of this community for over 50 years. Together with Robert Buehler, Dick Valentin founded the club with a vision of leadership, loyalty, citizenship, sportsmanship and particlpation ... games for boys run by boys. Long after his retirement he remained active with the Board of Directors and Alumni Association. As his health slowly deteriorated the last 12 years, he was less visible at the club except for Thanksgiving and the Track Meet. Dick Valentin died quietly in his sleep October 25th, just one week after his beloved club's 68th birthday. Those of us who were lucky enough to know Dick over his mani• years are filled with a sense of loss. Our Founding Father, the man who made endless sacrifices, who faced the hard timc::s and war years, kept this club on course and this communit( strong has left volumes of memories and a lasting influence which guides us all. Many thousands were touched by Dick Valentin, a mentor for the generations.

About 6 years ago Dick went through a series of interviews with various friends, talking about the origins of our community and the starting of the club. Alumnus Ray Donner spent countless hours transcribing the tapes onto paper. Here is a selection of interesting memories from Dick Valentin.

- Dick grew up at 3933 N. Irving Ave. Today that street is Bell Ave. His house was the first in the community with electricity. People would stop by their house just to see the lights.

- The building at Claremont and Byron was the site of the first motion pictures before the industry moved to Hollywood. From 1900 until about 1920 the Seelig Poloscope company started making movies. For circus movies the tame animals were allowed to graze in the neighborhood. The nuns at St Benedict's complained that the camels ate their cabbage at night, and Dick's mom could not sleep because the lions roared too loudly.

- A big, open field at Grace and Western was used as miniairport for a few years in the 1920's. For $5.00 you could get a ride.

- The first playing field in Revere Park was baseball field three. ln those days they had covered grandstands which held several hundred spectators for local Sunday afternoon games.

- During World War I I Dick published a special newsletter for older club members who fought overseas. He published the newletter and corresponded with all of our servicemen until the end of the war.

- Dick Valentin loved the Christmas Season. His house was beautifully decorated and so was our clubhouse. One of his favorites was to go Christmas Carolling with the Dads' Club, which he did until about 1 O years ago.

- Dick Valentin loved practical jokes. One of his famous bits was done on Sundays. Dick lived across the street from St Benedict's on Leavitt. He had a loud speaker on his front porch and a tape recording of the chuch bells. He'd blast the church bells at 11 :45 AM and watch the people start running down the street so they would not be late for 12:00 mass!

- Dick Valentin loved the Cubs. He started the tradition of walking down Grace to Wrigley in the late 1930's. One day Bill Veeck, later the owner of the White Sox, was waiting for our group outside the stadium. He wanted them to know that they were the best-behaved group to come to the ballpark!

A memorial mass will be held for Dick Valentin on Sunday, November 15th at 3:00 PM at St Benedict's Church. The service will be followed by a luncheon in the Social Center. Please RSVP for the luncheon by calling Sharon or Allen at 463-4161 .
