Good afternoon Ladies and Gentelmen and welcome to Cricklefields for this afternoon's Ryman League Division 1 North match with out near neighbours Redbridge. We wish their players, supporters and officials a pleasant stay with us and a safe journey home. We also extend a warm welcome to today's team of match officials. These programme notes are being written on Saturday the 25th, the day after our match with Romford, so I apologise in advice for the lack of more up-to-date information. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), I am away in Spain for today's game, and the Wroxham match on Monday (if it was played). Hopefully the programme is not at too much of a loss becuase of this. It would be fair to say

that the start to our season didn't quite go to plan. Everyone knew it would be tough against a Grays side who should be up at the top of the table come the end of the season. The boys wanted to bounce back, and despite going behind to an early goal against Cheshunt, we got ourselves back into the game and desevevedly lead at half-time. In the second half, we fell to pieces and our overall performance was pretty woeful. We got what we deserved: nothing. So after two matches we sat bottom of the table, without a win to our names. Fortunately, we were not alone. Sudbury, Romford, Ware, Soham and surprisingly, Wroxham, were with us at the foot of the table without a win. On Friday evening, Romford really did look like a team without a win, and save for about 20 minutes of pressure in the second half, we were untroubled. For us, it was a totally different stroy than our last two matches. Corey Whitely started, and Luke Stanley played a more central role. Whitely and Stanley were instrumental in our success on Friday, and almost everything we did came through them. Luke finished the match with three

assists, while Corey picked up the other one. In the first half, the Romford back four couldn't get anywhere near us, especially Corey who beat their full-back time and time again. We will be away to Southern League Premier side Hemel Hempsted Town in the next round, who we have not played since 2004. They also have former Forest forward Matt judge playing for them, after a spell in the irish Premier League. It is now up to us to build on this victory and carry our form back into the league campaign. Redbridge have seen quite wide-spread changes over the summer, and have brought in a new manager alongside a new Chairman. News on the club over the summer was somewhat limited, and it was a surprise - to me at least - to see them win 2-1 at Romford on the opening day of the season. While I'm away, the club website won't be updated - so I apologise in advance for this. I'm back on the 2nd of September, so normal service should be resumed then. I'm not sure which one of my mates chose dates for a holiday just as the football season was starting again, but once I get to the bottom of it, stern words shall be had!

Enjoy the game. FG.

jOEL pALMER RETuRnSAfter last Saturday's match with Grays Athletic, Joel Palmer signed Ryman League forms, to return for what must be at least his fifth spell at the club. Palmer joined us originally from Aveley in 2008 and was used mainly as an impact substitute, to very good effect as he helped the team avoid relegation that season. He returned to Aveley, and

had a spell in German football before returning at the start of last season. He scored seven goals in 24 starts last season, and made 7 substitute appearances. He came on as a second half substitute in our 4-2 defeat to Cheshunt on the 21st of August, and followed this up with a goal against Romford as he again came on as a second-half substitute.

SHORTSWaltham Forest will face Hemel

Hempsted Town in the next round of this season's FA Cup competition. This will certainly not phase Wale Ojelabi and his

side, as many will remember the

club's 2-0 victory over Hitchin Town at the same stage

of last season's competition.

Hemel currently have forward man

Matthew Judge playing for them. Judge played for us in a couple of spells, scoring six

goals from six starts and nine substitute appearances. Since

then, he has had a spell playing in the Irish Premier Division, but has now returned to the English non-league pyramid.

We will be playing Hemel on the 8th of

September.

SpILLAnE EnCOuRRAgEd WITH MALdOn STARTMaldon & Tiptree caused one of the first major upsets of the Ryman League Division North new season by beating big-spending and championship favourites AFC Sudbury 3-1 at home on Tuesday evening. The convincing win left manager Terry Spillane (pictured) with a big smile all over his face and confident his side can truly be a force to reckon with in the division this season. "I'm absolutely delighted not just at the win but the way the players responded by working hard and also coming back after the disappointment of drawing at Aveley on Saturday in our opening game," he declared. "Everyone knows that with the quality of the experienced signings Sudbury have made they are probably the clear favourites to go up," he continued. "

“ “For the second consecutive season, Forest will be in at least the first qualifying round of the FA Cup after defeatingRomford 4-1 at Ship Lane. In truth, Forest could have scored more in a match they dominated from start to finish, save for a short spell of Romford pressure in the second half. On Tuesday against Cheshunt, Forest went down to an early goal, but it was the other way around this time. Corey Whitely, making his first start for the club was making an immediate impact down the wing, and forged two good chances, before eventually playing a key part in Forest’s first goal. Whitely’s excellent work down the wing gave him the space to cut back to Luke Stanley whose perfect cross was met with a looping header by Adrian Clifton on the edge of the six-yard box. Whitely, Luke Stanley and Chris Taylor were all looking

dangerous, and it was Taylor who went closest next, heading over with a free-header. Then Whitely went close, with a powerful front-post effort which was pushed away at the expense of a corner by the home ‘keeper. Clifton went close again before Aaron Omand was eventually called into action for the first time, diving low to his right, making a good save. Spurred on, Forest went up the other end and doubled their lead. Stanley picked up his second assist of the match, supplying Chris Taylor with a perfect through pass. Taylor’s powerful low shot took a slight deflection on it’s way past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The second half started like the first, with Whitely and Stanley again went close. Then came Romford’s spell of pressure, forcing Omand into two good low saves. Romford also managed to miss two open goals and hit the woodwork once. The game was taken out of Romford’s grasp mid-way through the second half. Luke Stanley rounded off a sensational performance by laying in Manu Dagher who bounced off former Forest defender Brian Suchley and finished with a deft lob over the stranded ‘keeper.

Stanley was booked for simulation on Tuesday, but there was no doubt when he won a penalty this evening. Adrian Clifton stepped up to take the penalty, but it was excellently tipped onto the post by the Romford ‘keeper. Pressing for a fourth, Forest were caught out as Barry grabbed a consolation goal from close-range on 88. Romford thought they had scored a second moments after, but the referee signalled that the ball was kicked from Omand’s hands. In the dying embers, Forest grabbed a second. Whitely’s surging run down the wing found Joel Palmer at the back post who found the back of the net with the help of a defender on the line. Forest are now £1750 richer, and will be rewarded with a trip to Hemel Hempsted Town in the next round.

“ “For all the perceived benefit modern technology brings, it has the effect of dehumanising human interaction. Whilst innovations such as smartphones, Skype and social networking sites have made global communications more accessible and cost effective, there is little doubt they have subverted the principles of human relationships. Text messaging has negated the need to actually pick up a phone and speak to someone. Email has rendered letter writing obsolete to the point of being archaic. Facebook allows a hundred people you barely know to wish you happy birthday without having a single card on the mantelpiece to commemorate the fact. At times, it even effects the group dynamic; going out with friends and spending half of the evening buried in your iPhone has become so commonplace as to be practically de rigeur. So, it was with a slightly heavy heart that news broke in

the summer that Ceefax had been switched off in London as part of the digital revolution. The reaction throughout the blogosphere was more akin to mourners at a funeral procession than mere social commentary, as fans and journalists queued up to offer their own nostalgic take on the analogue news service. In truth, Ceefax had become the distant relation whom we never visit. Once an integral part of people’s lives, it succumbed to the ubiquity of the internet, and for the last decade or so has been sat alone in a forgotten corner of our consciousness waiting to die. For football fans, Ceefax has an almost mythological status. Many of its epitaphs relate to the football service, with ‘page 302’ assuming Old Testament proportions of deity. For years, Ceefax was the de facto method of keeping up to date with how your team was doing, unless you were part of the world’s financial elite who could afford to dial up Clubcall on a regular basis. The premise, particularly on match days, was simple. Fixtures would be laid out on a screen, and load across several pages. This would usually amount to three per division, though real aficionados could

always tell when a glut of goals went in as the pages would extend to four, five or even six to accommodate the goal scorer’s details. The rotating nature of the pages added to the tension. At times, their cycle would be infuriating slow, as if the technician in charge of content had a conspiracy against your team. On occasion where your club was involved in the only fixture of the night, it was particularly nerve shredding, as pages only tended to update if there was significant action. In these occurrences, the ‘reload’ button would be tested to full capacity. Watching the page numbers scroll through the top left hand corner of the TV screen generated excited trepidation, like a heroin addict pacing up and down before a drop off. This may seem rather specious, but anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise. Frank Skinner once recalled how he spent the evening in a hotel room on tour watching the West Brom result come in over Ceefax. The tension became so bad that he started walking out of the room, or standing at an angle whereby he could only just glimpse the TV. At times he even

Page 10: Waltham Forest v Rebridge (1-9-12)

Forest v Redbridge - Page 10

covered the screen with a pillow. To the layperson, it might sound comically obsessive, but to thousands of supporters across the county it was a self imposed and well rehearsed purgatory. Whilst some facets of Ceefax slavery may seem decidedly insular, the service could also be a great social leveller. For all the lamenting of its passing, few paid deference to its ability to congregate groups of people in the most unlikely of places. On any given Saturday over the last thirty years, a mainstay of British football culture was the sight of fans stood in Dixons or John Lewis watching the results service come in over Ceefax. The sheer number of TVs all showing the same synchronous output gave proceedings a distinctly Orwellian hue, set against a duplicitous backdrop that you were “just browsing”. Whilst there may have been some punters genuinely interested in purchasing the latest widescreen Matsui, most were there explicitly to check the latest scores. Dixons was often a refuge for bored men who had tired of clothes shopping with their partners. Males were never designed to sit outside the changing rooms in Topshop, affecting jaded smiles of approval

at the remorseless procession of clothing their women wished to try on. Escaping to Dixons to watch Ceefax was the evolutionary equivalent of Neanderthal man leaving the cave to club a Sabre-toothed Tiger. Where Ceefax really came into its own though was at 4.45pm on a Saturday, creating the curious but reassuring sight of men huddled round the windows of electrical retailers watching the final scores come in. Sometimes groups could reach double figures, as fans peered through the glass watching the results filter in, often with Steve Ryder as muted company on BBC One’s Grandstand. Some of my happiest memories have been spent standing outside Radio Rentals with a crowd of strangers waiting in anticipation for my team’s scoreline to appear. The lone shout of triumph or groan of resignation from an eclectic supporter base only added to the atmosphere, until everyone slowly drifted away into the ambient twilight of a largely deserted precinct. Ceefax’s demise was inevitable in the face of instant news delivered to mobile devices, tablets and PCs. Like the The Pink or The Green ‘Un results

newspapers, it is another part of our football heritage consigned to history. Whilst it would be easy to become maudlin, modern technology offers a wealth of services – particularly to the lower league fan – that simply didn’t exist a decade ago. Yet, in many ways, this transition can be seen as a microcosm of wider football culture: everything seems less personal and more functional now. Sitting in Starbucks with your iPad checking the football scores is an undoubted luxury, but it can’t match the camaraderie of a cold November night stood outside Tandy in a fog of breath and shared anticipation. I will raise a glass to Ceefax when it finally withdraws across the country in October of this year. And then I will tell a thousand strangers on Twitter why it will always hold a special place in my heart.

REdbRIdgESURPRISE PACKAGE LAST SEASON REDBRIDGE LOST THEIR MANAGER AND CHAIRMAN LAST SEASON. AN UNKNOWN qUANTITY THIS YEAR.

Towards the end of last season, Redbridge were on a roll. Some excellent form saw them rise up the table and almost nick a play-off place right at the death. Of course, they also had an excellent FA Cup run, reaching the second round, before eventually falling to Crawley Town. The summer saw a host of changes at Oakside. Chairman Dan Holloway was the first to go, releasing a statement which read: "Due to personal and family circumstances I am no longer in a position to continue to support the club and take it forward as I had previously hoped to do so." A couple of days later, manager Terry Spillane followed Holloway out of the door, saying he "felt the season ahead would be difficult to say the least after the developments at the club." Safe to say Spillane's worries were most probably around the financial implications of Holloway's departure, but this shocked a few, especially considering the financial restraints Spillane worked under for many years at Stansted. Movement was slow at Redbridge, but at the end of June, Del Robinson and Steve Portway were appointed as joint-managers. Robinson is a full-time coach at West Ham United, while Portway was somewhat a legend

while playing at Gravesend and Northfleet (now Ebbsfleet). News out of Oakside was not forthcoming over the summer, and their pre-season fixtures were far from impressive, failing to beat Step 5 and 6 opposition. However, at the time of writing, they have a 100% record in competitive matches this season. Admittedly, they have only beaten Romford 2-1 who we beat 4-1 last weekend in the FA Cup. Observers of Redbridge's squad this season have been quick to point out that Redbridge's squad is an extremely young one. Fielding a squad of relative unknown players at this level, at least one Redbridge player will be familiar to Forest supporters. Former West Ham youngster Nicky Barrett managed to play a half for Forest under Tony Mercer before limping off with an injury, never to be seen again. At this early stage in the season it is difficult to predict where Redbridge will finish. It will be hard for Robinson and Portway to match the club's league success last season, but their young side will no doubt head into each match with youthful optimism, similar to our young side of the 2005-6 season when we only just missed out on a play-off places.

“ “Today we entertain last season's surprise package, Redbridge, in a Ryman League game. They had two wonderful cup campaigns in the two senior FA Cup competitions and in the end, that probably contributed to them just falling short of the play off places. Their budget, i would suggest last season, would have been classed as "healthy", but, with a new manager and virtually a new team, it was still some achievement to threaten the play off party with the likes of big spenders, Sudbury/Brentwood and Maldon all falling way short. Sadly, as saw ourselves last season, things can change rapidly and in the summer, their Chairman resigned, swiftly followed by manager Spillane and all of the side (most of whom, I think followed him to Maldon) So they have started the season with new joint managers

and a budget that I wager can be described as "modest", much like our own and a raft of new, young and inexperienced players to continue in the club cause. Their campaign got off to an excellent start with a 2-1 win at Romford, having trailed 1-0 early on Because our esteemed programme editor is off for a break starting today, I have needed to write these notes last Saturday morning, so do not know how our visitors got on in the FA Cup or subsequent game, between then and now (should not be allowed - court martial the blighter, that's what I say - definite dereliction of duty sir) Our team finally came good at Romford in Friday night's FA Cup game at Ship Lane (the new home of Romford) After our lack lustre opening League game when Grays put us to the sword and the following Tuesday "game of two halves" at Cheshunt, where we saw the best and most awful of our side in that game, we showed against Romford what we are capable of, albeit against a side that also had not picked up a point in the League so far and despite a little "wobble" when were three - nil ahead. All achieved without the services of on loan striker,

Courtney White and after tasking a very comfortable 3-0 lead, I suppose it is understandable that a little complacency could creep in. I bet Adrian enjoyed going back to his old club as captain and scoring the early opener, even if he may not have enjoyed seeing his penalty saved at 3-0. Good also to se that we are spreading the goals around as well, with Chris Taylor and the returning Joel Palmer, both opening their account for the season as well as Manu notching another goal to set himself up as leading goal scorer at this very early stage of the season. As well as saying welcome back to Courtney & Joel, we also say welcome to Tom Vickers, who is a young midfield player from Billericay and who had the distinction of captaining the Essex Under 18's to winning the FA Under 18's County Cup last season. Because of deadlines, I do not know how we got on at new boys Wroxham on Bank Holiday Monday. Wroxham, like AFC Sudbury were strongly tipped as two of the teams to be in the fight for the promotion and play off places, but, both have started the season with two straight

Page 13: Waltham Forest v Rebridge (1-9-12)

defeats. I just hope they did not get a draw in the FA Cup and we did actually travel, because it would have meant that we would have stood a good chance of taking a pretty strong side there, instead of risking the chance of player drop outs if the game had to be rescheduled for a midweek. Also, we will have had an extra day to recover from the FA Cup game than them, who I presume, played on the Saturday. If the game did go ahead, let us hope Wroxham are still pointless from this season's League campaign and we have

broken our duck for 2012.2013. Today would be a very nice time to get our first home win of the season and start to lift ourselves away from the bottom of the table. On matters away from the team itself, I have to say, that apart from the two disappointing opening results, the club is starting to look in much better shape and it only underlines what I said in my opening programmes notes, two weeks ago, that I cannot believe just how dedicated and hard working all of our small but superb Committee are.

This season could spell a definite change in fortunes for the club, off the field if things go our way and I still believe that Wale, brilliantly assisted by Matt and Colin, have got some quality players in the squad who want to play for Forest and feel that the longer the season goes on, the better the team will get. Our confidence will have been boosted by the FA Cup result and performance and that can only help us start to find some decent League form.

Waltham Forest survived a late scare to become the first Ryman League side safely through to the first qualifying round of the FA Cup tonight (Friday). In command for much for the night, their 4-1 away win over Romford at Ship Lane booked them an away tie at Hemel Hempstead and banked £1,750 in prize money. Former Romford player Adrian Clifton, now the Forest skipper, gave his side a sixth-minute lead with a thumping

header and they rarely looked back. Chris Taylor made it 2-0 on 35 minutes. Romford rallied briefly midway through the second half and in a three-minute spell Paul Clayton missed an open goal, Hussain Isa hit a post with a free-kick and Jack Barry headed over the bar from point-blank range. Manu Dagher's 74th-minute strike stretched the lead and it hardly seemed to matter when Clifton had an 88th-minute penalty saved by Elliott

Anderson. Jack Barry pulled one back a minute later and Romford promptly netted again through Brian Suchley. But, with Forest suddenly wobbling, the strike was disallowed and they breathed again. Romford threw men forward and paid the price when Joel Palmer put the result beyond all possible doubt with a tap-in in the third minute of added time.www.isthmian.co.uk

“ “Romford 2-4 Waltham Forest (24-8-12)

Another poor Romford performance saw them dumped out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle. Waltham Forest raced out of the blocks with Manu Dacker forcing a save from Elliottt Anderson after two minutes and three minutes later Adian Clifton gave the visitors the lead when after a deep cross his looping header dropped into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. Moments later Clifton found space and his header back across the goal was knocked over the bar by Chris Taylor. Romford had their first chance on fourteen minutes but Hussein ISA's shot flew over the bar. Forest again pushed forward and a low cross by Luke Stanley was volleyed towards goal by Corey Whitely but Elliott ANDERSON produced a fine save. Some more poor defending by Romford allowed Clifton a free

head from a corner but the ball ended behind the Boro goal. Hussein ISA found some space for the home team on twenty eight minutes but with he keeper beat his twenty five yard shot went inches wide. It was Hussein ISA again, this time popping up on the left who had a strong shot tipped over by Omand in the Forest goal after a cheeky free kick by Bobby PORT. Just as Romford had been looking dangerous Chris Taylor managed to evade a tackle and blast the ball home Waltham Forest on thirty minutes. Romford nearly pulled a goal back with the last kick of he half but Brian SUCHLEY could only head over Bobby PORT's corner. Romford brought on Reece HEWITT at half time for James ISHMAIL but once again it was the visitors who looked more likely to score with Stanley and Oradono going close. With twenty minutes gone in the second half Romford came close to getting a goal when once again Hussein ISA ran at the defence and after cutting in his left foot shot was parried and the rebound hit Paul CLAYTON and bounced over. The same player then hit a great free kick but the curling left foot shot hit the post and bounced out. Waltham Forest put the game to bed on seventy

three minutes when Manu Dacker chased a flick by Taylor and lobbed the ball over the advancing Elliott ANDERSON. On eighty six minutes Matt TOMS felled Luke Stanley in the box but Elliott ANDERSON produced a fine save diving to his left and tipping the Clifton penalty onto the post. Two minutes later Alfie HILTON won the ball and run the length on the pitch and his cross from the right was bundled home by Jack BARRY and Romford thought they had scored again when Toran SENGHORE knocked the ball home after keeper Omand spilled the ball but the referee harshly adjudged that the keeper was fouled. There was still time for one more Waltham Forest attack and when Whitely found space on the right his pull back was knocked home by Joel Palmer to complete the rout.

Division One North club Harlow Town have announced

the signing of centre-forward Tony

Jacobs. The 18-year-old

spent last season at Dagenham &

Redbridge in their youth and reserve

set up.During pre-season he was on trial at Brighton & Hove

Albion for six weeks. "We would like to wish him a

successful season at the Hawks," said a club spokesman. Jacobs was with Waltham Forest

towards the tail-end of the 2011-12

season, but failed to make any real

impact, spending most of his time

on the substitutes bench.

I've just returned from a fortnight in a part of southern France which is the world’s largest wine-producing region, and it’s fair to say a bottle or two were sunk (most days). But having missed the opening week of the 2012-13 season, it’s also fair to admit that not everything was rosé in the Hammonds apartment. The shakes I experienced certainly weren’t to do with any cold weather, after all, there were health warnings issued with temperatures in the mid to late-30s. I suppose they could have been connected with the alcohol. My guess, however, is that it was from severe withdrawal symptoms of being situated in Languedoc at 3pm on the opening Saturday of the season when I’d much rather have been at Long Eaton United against Dunkirk. Thankfully, I had a Non-League fix to help me through in the form of the autobiography of Eric Nixon, ‘a larger than life goalkeeper’. Entitled ‘Big Hands Big Heart’ and superbly written by one of Fleetwood Town’s media men, David Mitchell, it tells the story of how ‘Nico’ fulfilled his dream of going from semi-pro football to the top of the English game. Nixon recalled how he was working for a car valeting

business in 1983 when ex-Manchester United and England keeper Gary Bailey’s motor was brought in for a clean. Nixon – then playing for Curzon Ashton – wanted a bit of the Sierra Sapphire lifestyle, and went straight to Maine Road, then home of his beloved Manchester City, after finishing his shift. Met by City legends Tony Book, Denis Law and Ken Barnes in reception, he asked for a trial. A scout watched him play in the North West Counties League the following day, then invited him to play in a reserve game at the stadium where he had watched his heroes from a being small boy. To cut a long story short, Nixon earned a contract and went onto play 84 times for the Sky Blues. He then enjoyed great success at Tranmere Rovers, earning cult status over a decade, and Stockport before more recently working as goalkeeper coach at Fleetwood and now Macclesfield. Picking up my The NLP after returning home last weekend, I then read an excellent interview my colleague Matt Badcock had done with current Stockport player Joe Connor. After eight years studying and playing soccer

in America, the 26-year-old returned to his native Stockport last November with his pregnant wife and child. His granddad Jack and dad Jim had both played for the Hatters, so after seeing County had been hammered 7-0 at Grimsby, he thought “I’m going to see if I can go and play for them”. The midfielder turned up at the training ground, asked if he could join in and was told ‘No’. But he stayed to watch to “see what the standard was like”, and when they needed an extra man, he was invited onto the training pitch. Connor must have impressed Jim Gannon, because the Edgeley Park boss soon signed him and has since made him his captain. Now, I did actually enjoy my holiday. And the wine wasn’t half good. But it’s equally refreshing to be back and able to report on rags-to-riches – or at least trialist-to-talisman – tales such as Eric and Joe’s as another fine season matures!

Whatever you do, don’t take the train to Cheshunt for this one – the station you want is Theobald’s Grove, and the Wheatsheaf (McMullen’s) is conveniently a mere throw-in away from the station exit. Alternatively, try the Vine in the High Street – another McMullen’s house with a garden.

SHORTSBradley Woods-Garness has set

himself a 20-goal target this season following his impressive

start to the campaign with Ryman League Premier Division club

Canvey Island. The striker scored the winner

on the opening day at Wingate and followed up with a man-of-the-match showing in the Gulls’

midweek win over Leiston. The 26-year-old has top scored

in the Ryman Premier before with Sutton, and says he’d love to repeat the feat again this season. “I’ve set myself a minimum target

of 20 goals,” he said. “I’ve scored that many at this

level before playing out wide and through the middle.

“So if I stay fully fit, and as a team we are playing well, then I’m

confident I can get that many again this season.”

Woods-Garness scored eight goals in 11 matches during a loan

spell at Park Lane last season. He left towards the end of

the campaign in controversial circumstances after a clash with

teammate Jay Curran. But he lined up alongside Curran

in the Canvey attack on the opening say, and says that issue

has now been put to bed. “I think what happened with

that last season was blown out of proportion – it was nothing

serious,” he said.
