Walter Mika & Frances Garner, Soloists It has been said that in order to know where we are going, we must look at where we’ve been. It is in this spirit that tonight’s program has been selected. We are blessed to live in a city that is so ethnically and culturally diverse, and what better way to explore a culture than to examine its music. This is only a brief journey we are taking this evening, and only a representative sampling from four different people groups, but the result is a blending of ideas and music that has helped us become the people we are today. Enjoy the sheer virtuosity of Byrd and his teacher, Tallis, tap your toe and wiggle in your seat with music of our friends from Central and South America, bathe in the tonal richness of Brahms, and search your soul with the truly moving spirituals. This has been a delight to assemble and perform. We hope you enjoy From Whence We’ve Come: A Choral Cultural Celebration.

Your hands are my caress,my daily affirmations.I love you because your hands work for justice.

Your eyes are my lucky charm against misfortune.I adore you for your gazethat looks to and creates the future.

Your mouth is yours and mine, your mouth is never mistaken:I love you because your mouthknows how to cry out for rebellion.

Con el silbo y la picada de la brisa coleadora,La tarde catira y mora entró al corralón callada.

La noche, yegua cansada, sobre los bancostremola la crin y la negra cola

Y en su silencio se pasma tu corazón de fantasma

And for your sincere faceand wandering spiritand your weeping for the worldBecause you are the people, I love you.

And because our love isneither famous nor naïve,and because we are a couplethat knows we are not alone.

I want you in my paradise, which is to say, in my country;I want the people to live happilyEven though they aren't allowed to!

Tree of the lonely soul, wide opening of theriverside, now you will be able to say: Hereslept Cantaclaro. With the whistle and the sting of the twistingwind, the dappled and violet dusk quietlyentered the corral. The night, tired mare, shakes her mane andblack tail above the riverside; and, in its silence, your ghostly heart is filledwith awe.

    PROGRAM NOTES:

William Byrd (1542-1623) was a great English composer and organist, born inLincolnshire, England. In 1570 he was sworn in as a Gentleman of the ChapelRoyal (while retaining his post as organist at Lincoln Cathedral until 1572) andstudied music with Thomas Tallis. In 1572 he assumed the duties, with Tallis, asorganist of the Chapel Royal. Four major collections of Byrd's works werepublished between 1588-1591: Psalmes, Sonets & Songs (1588), Songs ofSundrie Natures (1589), Cantiones sacrae 1 (1589) and Cantiones sacrae II(1591). Musically, these books represent the work of the greatest English

polyphonic master of the 16th century. Byrd was unsurpassed in his time in compositionalversatility: in instrumental music, madrigals, ecclesiastical works, and solo songs. Today we heartwo examples of his work, Sing Joyfully and Haec Dies.

  • Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), English composer and organist, wrote anthems, services, and other music for the Anglican rite. He is considered the father ofEnglish cathedral music. After several professional appointments, Tallis was atCanterbury for two years and later became a gentleman of the Chapel Royal, where he stayed for the rest of his life. For nearly 50 years he composed, played, sang and taught music at the English court, witnessing the stylistic transition frommedieval to tonal polyphony, culminating in his own compositions and in thoseof his brilliant pupil William Byrd. His sacred works were many, written both in

Latin and English. Note the clarity of harmony and word setting that are heard in the two Englishworks, A New Commandment and If Ye Love Me. These bright and tuneful anthems also mark atransition from the ancient to modern style.

Ernani Aguiar (1949 or1950 - ) born in Petropolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is a contemporaryBrazilian composer, choral conductor, and musicologist. Aguiar studied under various composersand conductors in South America and later in Europe. He has written a number of instrumentalpieces, but his most famous works are his choral pieces, such as the energetic Salmo 150 (1993),which feature rhythmic backgrounds with rapid articulations. He is currently a professor of musicat the University of Rio de Janeiro, a fellow of the Villa-Lobos Institute, and a member of theAcademia Brasileira de Musica.

Alberto Favero (1944 -) was born in Argentina into a family of musicians, whoencouraged his musical talents. He is an accomplished musician, composer, pianistand orchestral director. A composer of popular music, he writes andperforms in musical theater productions (musicals, musical comedy, opera, balletand multimedia collaborations), concerts and recitals, and compositions that setpoetry to music. His credits include performances in venues around the world.

Te Quiero is an original song in which Favero sets to music a poem of Mario Benedetti, awell-known poet from Uruguay. The poem expresses social, political, and economic problems of thecountry and conveys a strong empathy for Latinamerican people. In this work melody and textachieve "perfect unity." The arranger is Liliana Cangiano, a talented choral arranger in Argentina.

Antonio Estevez (1916 - 1988), composer, choral and orchestral conductor, studied compositionwith Vincente Emilio Sojo and oboe at the Caracas Escuela de Musica y Declamacion (1934-44),composition with Copland at the Berkshire Music Center (Tanglewood) and electronic music inParis. His most important work is the Cantata Criolla, a choral symphonic work based on the wordsby Alberto Torrealba. Mata del anima sola (Tree of the lonely soul) is a work inspired by a poem ofAlberto Arvelo Torrealba. The work is made up of two sections, one slow and meditative and onequick and rhythmic (characteristic of a dance called joropo). The music depicts the solitude andmystery of the llanos, the high plains of Venezuela; the tenor solo represents the llanero or "man ofthe plains" whose songs are improvised. In the joropo section, the choir imitates the instruments thatare traditionally used to play the dance.

  • Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) A pianist and composer, Brahms never wrote anopera; however, song to him was of vital importance. In his songs he takesmusical picture-painting to soaring heights. His music has been described asautumnal - warm, golden and gorgeous. As his friend, the composer RobertSchumann wrote, "…there are songs the poetry of which would be understoodeven without words, for a profound vocal melody runs through them all." At leasttwelve of Brahms' works are set to texts of the beauty of nature, in praise of thetranquility of night, songs or longing and of love that lies enfolded in sweetness and in sorrow.

The two pieces included in this concert are Der Abend (Evening) with words by Friedrich von Schiller and O Shöne Nacht (O Lovely Night) set to the text of Georg Friedrich Daumer.

Larry L. Fleming (1936 - 2003) is the arranger of the traditional piece Give MeJesus. Dr. Fleming, founder in 1986 and long-time music director of the NationalLutheran Choir, was a noted conductor and composer of both choral andinstrumental music. Each step in his career as conductor and teacher inacademic settings (colleges, universities and seminaries), professionalsettings (concerts and clinics), has brought him critical acclaim, academic honorsand a reputation for innovation. He led the National Lutheran Choir until hisretirement in 1999.

Moses Hogan (1957-2003), an internationally renowned pianist, conductor andarranger, created new original arrangements of classic spirituals, and formedseveral choirs that performed them with new vitality. A graduate of the NewOrleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and Oberlin Conservatory of Musicin Ohio, he also studied at New York's Julliard School of Music and LouisianaState University in Baton Rouge. Hogan formed the internationally acclaimedMoses Hogan Chorale, whose high musical standards and unique repertoireconsistently elicited praise from critics worldwide. In the final years of his life,Mr. Hogan became increasingly in-demand internationally as an arranger, conductor and clinician.Hogan's contemporary setting of spirituals, original compositions and other works have been reveredby audiences and praised by critics.
