Just for women A free Women as Leaders workshop and focus group is being offered to all women in Walpole and districts. The event has been organised by registered nurse and local Kind Minds business owner Adele Heaton

with support from the Walpole Community Development Group, the Department of Local Government and Communities and the Shire of Manjimup. Adele said, “The workshop is open to all women, whether they run a business or not.”

Adele who used to teach leadership to clinical nurses said that women in Walpole are achieving great things in the community and the workshop would assist them to develop their personal goals.

“If you have a brilliant idea, this is the opportunity to workshop it and come out with a fully fleshed-out project and a vision for yourself,” Adele said. The workshop will also explore self compassion, Adele explained that women are often so busy taking care of everyone that they tend to put themselves last. “It isn't selfish to take care of yourself,” Adele said.

The workshop will be offered over two days, Saturday September 10 and Sunday September 11 at

the Walpole Recreation Centre. The Saturday program offers a range of topics including building strong women, Acceptance Commitment Therapy and self care and self compassion. Sunday’s program will offer small business advice and communication techniques. The workshop will conclude with a focus group to establish what the community needs to assist women

reach their goals. Adele said that limited childcare will be available trough the Walpole Family Centre and bookings are essential. For more information about the event or to book your place contact Adele Heaton on 9840 1114 or email [email protected]

Times to Remember Shire of Denmark Chief Executive Officer, Cliff Frewing, braved the cold on Thursday August 4, attending

the ‘Sleep Out in the Town Square’ held in Albany. A Denmark Shire spokes person said that the ‘Sleep Out’ was held to help raise

awareness of people experiencing homelessness and the

issues that they face. “Participants spent the night huddled around fire buckets before heading off to bed in sleeping bags and swags covering the Town Square,” the spokesperson said. The City of Albany and Albany Youth Support Association hosted the Sleep Out during Homelessness

By Lee Cummuskey

That’s right folks, prepare yourselves for a night of hilarity as Walpole’s premier social event returns for 2016. It’s actually been 6 years since crazy acts such as ‘Wow, that’s a big one!’, ‘Ronnie Ringbarker’ and ‘Rock Lobster’ had us in fits of laughter.

(Who could forget that local identity wrapped in glad wrap, although I wish I could!)

Red Faces is great fun to watch but it’s even better to take part. There are more than 10 weeks to get an act together and you can do whatever you like. Singing, juggling, storytelling, solo or group…. whatever talent (or lack of!) you have, Red Faces is your chance to perform and share in some CASH

prizes! We will again be looking for the best Community Group Act. Remember this is an excellent chance for your organisation to have fun, build team spirit and earn some easy money.

There will be a few surprises this year with a well- known MC taking the reins and a rather diverse judging panel ready to dish out the praise and the odd barb! This event is also an important fund-raising

opportunity for the Walpole Sport and Recreation Centre and your support and participation will help the centre remain a valuable asset for our local community. The event is planned for Saturday 29th October at the Community Hall and will include door prizes, bar facilities and tea and coffee. Tickets will be for sale at the door on the night,

however this event has been sold out the last four occasions so it is best to get there early!

Act entry forms can be obtained from the Walpole Sport and Recreation Centre or Walpole Hardware. For further enquiries please contact the Walpole Recreation Centre Manager, Karen Cummuskey on 98 401 345.

NOTE: Do you have any old photos of previous Red Faces acts or previous participants in action? Please email them to [email protected],

drop them into the Walpole CRC care of WW Editor or phone 9840 1395. —ED

December 1968 when he was a pilot for McRobertson Miller Airlines (MMA), Flight 1750, a Vickers

Viscount, crashed on approach to the Port Hedland airport.

On board were two pilots, two air hostesses and twenty-two passengers. None of the occupants survived the impact. Ken said that he had flown to Port Hedland as a passenger on that plane the day before. “I knew the crew that perished”, he said. Detailed investigation revealed that two fracture surfaces showed that metal fatigue had caused cracks to grow across the lower boom of the right wing's main spar.

With so much of the lower boom affected the wing could no longer support the weight of the aircraft, the lower boom suddenly broke in two and the outer half of the right wing separated from the inner half. Ken said, “Over the following years I thought of ways of preventing such a terrible accident and developed an idea for a structural monitoring system and I was granted International Patents.” Ken explained that in association with Perth

financier, Mr Paul Kristensen of Capital Technologies, he set up a company in 1995.

“I developed the device to the stage of completing lab tests at the Aeronautical and Maritime Research

(Continued from page 1) Laboratories”, Ken explained. In order to raise further capital, the now ASX- listed company Structural Monitoring Systems (SMS) was

formed. Ken explained that his invention took 21 years to

develop to the stage of being accepted by major airlines and aircraft manufacturers. The invention has attracted world-wide interest in the aviation industry. Ken said that his CVM system was used in fatigue tests to certify the fuselage of the Airbus A380. The technology is now the first airborne crack detection system in the world achieving certification for use by the Federal Aviation Authority of the USA

on passenger carrying aircraft.

Meanwhile SMS, the company that now owns Ken’s invention, is currently on the verge of commercial success with the scope to license aircraft manufacturers to in-build the sensors into each plane. A deal would signify a reliable and very substantial annual revenue stream for the company. Ken explained that he has been disillusioned with

SMS and decided to move to Walpole. Ken said, “I moved with my wife Shirley to beautiful Walpole in 2004 to live in the home we purchased in 1990. I have loved Walpole since visiting

as a child in about 1948.” Ken has also invented a self-adjusting hook for a door, a folding shopping trolley, a digitally variable mechanical gear transmission and a constant flow line pressure regulator.

In recognition of the significant contribution that Ken’s CVM system is making to aviation safety, the Inventors Association of Western Australia awarded Ken with Life Membership in 2008. It is remarkable to have such an inspiring, scientific, creative mind residing quietly and unpretentiously in

Walpole. Fortunately Ken shows no sign of slowing down

and continues to work on further inventions in his shed. He is currently developing a wind power device. We certainly look forward to new developments by this inspiring local.

Works set to commence

The much anticipated upgrade to Walpole’s main street is set to commence on August 28. The Shire of Manjimup have announced that Vasse

Civil have been appointed by the Shire to undertake the necessary works to upgrade Nockolds Street. “It is anticipated that on Sunday, 28 August 2016, work will commence with the removal of kerbing in preparation for the reconstruction of the road pavement. “The entire project will be conducted in two stages. It is estimated that the project will be completed by the end of September 2016,” the Shire spokesperson said.

Further information about the project can be found in the Shire Bulletin.

GSDC appoints new Chair The Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) has formally appointed Denmark businessman and farmer Ross Thornton as the new Chair of the Board. Mr Thornton was appointed to the Board of the

Commission in October 2014 as Deputy Chair. The position of Chair of the Board became vacant in April when Peter Rundle resigned from the post. Mr Thornton is a qualified town planner and registered builder, and is a member of the WA Planning Commission. He has served as a Councillor and President of the Shire of Denmark. Board member Veronica Fleay, President of the Shire of Kojonup, has been appointed Deputy Chair.

The ten-member GSDC Board includes three Ministerial nominees, three local government

nominees and three members nominated by the community.

Walpole Quality Meats Supplying & supporting

Walpole for over 12 years

By Helen Pierce On top of Mt Frankland, as well as Mt Roe, I watch the clouds gather, as the winds they do blow.

The rain comes a pouring, on water logged ground, thunder and lightning,

boom and flash all around. The river is rising, the creeks are in flood, the temperature is falling, we’re surrounded by mud.

The cows feel the cold spell and huddle together, the fowls run for shelter, in this terrible weather

I long for the summer, with warm balmy days, and when Mt Frankland is draped in smoke haze.

—Written by Helen Pierce in April 1963.

‘Winter’ - a poem

Community input sought The Shire of Manjimup is currently seeking comment

from stakeholders to develop a new Early Years Strategy.

The Shire announced that the strategy will be developed through community consultation, literature reviews and stakeholder engagement within the Shire of Manjimup. A Shire spokesperson said, “The Early Years refers to children aged 0-8 years old. It also includes parents, families, care givers and community groups in which children and their families are involved, as well as service and program providers aimed at this age

group.”

Input from the community is being collected via a survey available online at the Shire website until Friday, August 19 2016. The survey aims to collect input on what the town needs to support the development of young children. During August Shire representatives will also be attending playgroups, to share information and distribute hard copies of the survey.

By Geoffrey Newby This is not a story of a nit in a fit though a knit for a fit some may say it is. The reader will decide if it is a neat fit for a knit and not a yarn for a shearer’s barn if you follow my thread. In either case may you pick the knits and not the nits in the pick.

Cold wintery days have set knitting needles fast at work in our community, and I have it on good authority, from she who knows, that the crafty women

of Walpole are considering a new sporting event at the following Olympics. The women are to be known as the Walpole Woolly Jumpers and plan to take on the knitters of the world. Knowing the prowess of these women of wool and the exceptional merino fibre Australia is famous for,

they may well knit their way to gold! Those excited race commentators would call the final moments of the race something like this: “The Aussie Woolly Jumpers ram through with gold, the Britt’s get their Guernsey and take the silver, and the

Irish hang on to the Cable for bronze, while still casting off, the rest of the mob lay down their needles!” It was while I was in this frenzied knitting mood last

week, that I discovered a few interesting facts. Possibly the first wool knitters were Egyptian Coptic Christians, and a 4th-5th century garment of theirs is displayed in

the Royal Albert Museum, London. Also, that morning, I had read about a young family serving the

remote community on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Joh, the wife and a doctor and Brad, her husband, an Anglican Minister, wrote in the publication ‘The Real Australian’ about the news of expecting the birth of their third child. They asked their readers to pray for them, saying, “Please pray for Joh as God knits,” I stopped reading, does God knit? I read on, “knits together a baby due in September.” well, what a super knit! Then I

remembered the words of the Psalmist: “For it was you

who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” I wondered, did that passage inspire those early Coptic believers to take up needles and set successive generations on a path of warmer clothing? The word knit means to join, bring together in design. What a gold winning design we creatures are. The Rio Olympics is an international canvass which showcases exceptional athletic form in motion, yet that

is part only of the spirit that is human - namely you and me.

So let us sing out as did the Psalmist to his God, “I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

By Glenda Grigg Our members continue to maintain and to replenish the garden plots over the winter months by digging in the peas, planted as a green manure. This is a great way to add nitrogen and organic materials into the soil ready for spring planting. We continue to mulch our large cuttings and add all

green waste and shredded paper from a local centre to our compost/worm farms, with great results in worm

numbers and castings. Another by product is the worm juice, diluted, a tonic, safe to use on all plants, which will be available on request. True recycling using organic practices. Controlling weeds with our organic sprays is difficult, with so many wet days, so it is important to cut out the weeds while small.

There are many alternate methods available at present, steam and flame wands are two that may be of interest. The stone fruit trees have been pruned and cow

manure used as a soil conditioner and fertilizer. Our Community Garden invites you to have a stroll through and we would welcome any enquiries or new members.
