Dear Alumni,

Greetings from High on the Hill. We hope this finds you and your family safe and well.

Now is the time to put down your electronic devices (yes, you have permission) and get prepared to feel uplifted and full of hope. This is not the story of an institution that will go by the wayside. It is a story of how during an ever changing landscape we are re-examining the what, how and why we do things, adapting to change, thinking creativity, working collaboratively, and maximizing time and resources without losing sight of our goal: To provide our students with the Walnut Hills experience of unparalleled opportunities, personal growth and preparation to succeed at the college level and beyond.

I know our alumni family is wondering: In this challenging time, just what is WHHS doing?

Are we in school? Are we remote? How are things going? I will attempt to answer all your questions and give you a glimpse into both WHHS life during COVID 19 as well as the support the Foundation has given along the way.

Through it all, you have stood by our side. You have risen to the challenge when we have asked. It is of great comfort to this institution, administrators, faculty and students alike, to know that you will be there as we move forward. We do not know the specifics of what we will need this next year. We do know we will have needs that could change depending on whether students are learning 100% remotely, are in school full time, or are on a hybrid schedule. We are asking that you once again stand by our side with your support. We also understand that during this time you or your family may have limited resources due to the far reaching impact of the COVID 19 epidemic. We are most appreciative of any size donation and we say a sincere thank you.

Sursum Ad Summum

Debbie HeldmanExecutive DirectorWHHS Alumni Foundation

OVERVIEW

Last year we ended the final quarter of school

remotely and it proceeded fairly well. Our

students took AP exams—1178 students took

2882 exams, with 80% achieving a scores of

3+ or higher. WHHS applauded 24 National

Merit Semi Finalists and 20 National Merit

Commended Students were announced! This is

8.3% of our senior class.

We used the summer and early fall to develop

and assess different plans of operation for the

school year depending on the circumstances,

as well as using the parameters set forth by

the Cincinnati Public School Board. There were

two overarching mandates if we were to be in

session, all students and faculty must adhere to

the 6ft social distancing CDC recommendation

and if students were to learn remotely, they

should not spend more than four hours online.

The 2020-21 school year, and our journey, begins here:

Students received laptops from CPS. WHHS offered orientation sessions including “How To” tips for navigating the digital system. These sessions were available for our parents too.

Our 7 bell schedule was reworked to a block schedule. This allowed longer class times and larger chunks of student/teacher interaction.

Faculty received additional professional development and became more familiar with available resources.

Teaching of Note…a non-traditional approach to teaching music

John Caliguri teaches 300 students in all levels of orchestra. As one might expect, this class is a hands on experience for students and teaching it remotely with limited group performance time has presented challenges. John has had to rethink his teaching practices. Normally students listen to a piece and a brief history is shared in class. Written assignments are rarely given. John changed it up by giving a written assignment which required a response to the following question:

After listening to Symphonie Fantastique, might there be clues to the listener that their marriage was doomed from the beginning? Please write one paragraph using themes and emotions you used from the previous assignment that might give the listener the sense that his love for her was an unhealthy obsession rather than a love that would be eternal.

Here is an example of one of the answers.

Symphonie Fantastique Final Thoughts by Brodie Kreder, 9th grade, Senior Orchestra, cello player

I believe that there are many signs that the marriage was doomed from the start. The first of these signs are the low and somber notes being played near the start of the first movement. This acts almost as a form of foreshadowing of what’s to come by suggesting that despite the happiness throughout the rest of the piece, the doom is inevitable. Another reason I believe the marriage was doomed from the start is how in the final piece, it has the Idee Fixe play, but it ends up twisting into the “witches dance.” This adds a sense of obsession rather than love because even though our protagonist had married her for how she appeared (the Idee Fixe) it contorts into the horrifying dance (the murder and ending love) which clearly demonstrates the difference between what was expected (eternal love) and what was truly present (unhealthy).

This assignment required the student to articulate in writing what he is hearing. Brodie applied the knowledge he had learned in class discussion and used analytic skills thinking through a music lens.

This speaks to the tenants of a classical education, using all disciplines in concert. Can you imagine this student playing the actual music and the depth of his performance with this background understanding? While we have shared only one example of a teacher using their creativity, we see this ingenuity exploding across the disciplines!

OUTCOME

Our space, combined with our average class size, did not allow us to accommodate our 3,000 students with the social distancing mandate. Even if we did have the space, we would need approximately 60 additional teachers to meet our mandate. While everyone agrees that the best scenario for students is to attend class in person, after considering a multitude of plans, it was determined that in person classes were not feasible.

Once determined that we would be remote, we focused our energies on maximizing our time/results with our students in this virtual setting. After ending last year’s school year, we noted some of our students and faculty were not on the same level of technology competency.

NOW WHAT?

The library has added digital eBooks and audio books. The staff created their own YouTube Channel posting videos to help students and teachers.

The library staff continues to teach research skills and provide book talks via Google Meetings

The College Information center is working with students on standardized test skills, and the Writing Center is working with students on college essays.

The Counseling Department co-hosted a virtual FAFSA Support Program with Miami University, developed a Senior College Application Process Program and offered a live College Q&A session. They also have virtual office hours every day for one on one meetings.

HOW DO WE SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY?

We purchased science materials for hands-on activities for all 7th graders as well as art kits for art students each semester. In addition, software programs such as Ed Puzzle, Delta Math and Breezin’ Thru Theory were purchased to magnify learning opportunities for our students

WHAT IS THE ALUMNI FOUNDATION’S ROLE?The WHHS Alumni Foundation has historically supported these programs and will continue to do so even though their needs are changing. !

While we cannot bring our entire student body back at one time, we are looking for ways to bring small groups back. This might involve allowing 7th graders entry for in-classroom learning or small study groups for Advanced Placement Courses.

Support systems such as the Library, Student Success Center, Counselors, College Information Center, and

Writing Center are working full steam ahead, delivering their services remotely.

Our faculty has reached out throughout the school year requesting supplies and on-line resources to enhance the efficacy and engagement of our students as they learn remotely.

The Class of 1964 Performing Arts Fund is sponsoring the live stream performance of Hamlet.

400 athletes were able to participate in the 2020 Fall Sports Season. Girls and Boys Cross Country, Girls Varsity Tennis, and Boys Soccer moved on to regional and state competitions. Swimming hosted its first ever 7 week pre-season swim clinic.

WHAT ABOUT SPORTS, CLUBS AND EXTRACURRICULARS?

WHAT’S NEXT?We have just finished our first quarter and will be assessing what worked and what we need to improve upon. A good barometer is that attendance is very high; students are showing up for classes. ACT/SAT tests are being given on-site. Counselors and teachers are busy writing college recommendations and thousands of college applications are being processed as usual. l

Fall athletics met for practice and competition following the Ohio State Athletic Association rules.

Clubs and extracurriculars are meeting! Forty of our sixty clubs are meeting in some capacity.

Math Team is competing and doing well. Our Robotic Team has built the robot; competitions are being held remotely

and some with a limited amount of participants. Oh, and yes, our Boo Radley Club continues to deliver words of encouragement to our faculty and student body.

The Music Department is working on virtual concerts and the Theatre Department will stream Hamlet live!

HOW HAVE ALUMNI RESPONDED?

The Class of

1999The Broadcast Lab Currently our journalism curriculum includes classes in Yearbook Production, Newspaper Production, & Newswriting. As part of this offering the department wanted to create a small, flexible broadcast studio space within the journalism lab. This space will allow students to work on podcast and video broadcast segments. Students will gain experience in face-to-face interview skills and further develop their professional demeanor in front of an audience.

The design for the space is based on work done in other high school journalism programs. LED lighting and tracks will allow for better portraits for our print publications and sufficient light to film broadcast pieces.

The Class of

1980Landscaping Fundraising for campus beautification projects in honor of our 125th Anniversary continues to be a great success. One involves planting thousands of bulbs this fall and the other is a mural on Jonathan Avenue.

The planting process has begun and we can’t wait to see the results next spring! Both projects will leave a lasting legacy on campus.

The Class of

1979

RoboDome We offer astronomy as part of our curriculum and have two telescopes that have been donated by alumni. These telescopes needed a permanent home on campus, and the Class of 1979 raised funds for the perfect solution! The RoboDome is a freestanding structure that will house the telescopes. The faculty is currently selecting the site on campus for this, and then we will execute the installation. In addition, the class is helping to upgrade our language lab. Our Modern World Language Department currently offers Chinese, French, German, Spanish and Russian.

The Class of

1968Interactive information kiosk system The gift of three interactive information panels will enhance abilities to deliver content throughout the campus. With the aim to support and inspire current students, we will be able to post current subject matter such as alumni work in the current pandemic, alumni on-campus support and alumni reunion and event information. The touch-screen interactivity combined with custom software allows targeted delivery to an array of audiences. A campus map, Alumni Hall Of Fame Inductees and Walnut’s theatrical offerings will now be at your fingertip.

The Class of

1964Sponsoring the live streaming of Hamlet.

Take off your masks and please give a big shout out to the following classes! Last year, several of our classes, in lieu of their reunions, raised funds for specific projects to enhance WHHS for our students. Even though our students are not on campus, we are using this opportunity to implement some of the projects for when they return.

Thanks to all of our Eagles, who flocked together to respond to our “Cover all your Faces..and our bases” campaign to provide facemasks for our students as well as your families. This “ community spread” is a prime example of alumni support for the greater good.

WHAT HAS REMAINED CONSTANT?

Mohit Pinninti ’20 Georgia Institute of Technology

...Until then though, it’s going to be hard to leave the school that I’ve spent six years at. I remember countless times telling my parents that I would rather go to ultimate practice or Ping Pong Club after school and wait until 7:30 or even 8 for them to pick me up instead of taking the bus home after seventh period. I had something every day, and even if I didn’t, I would just sit at the benches and do homework while laughing with friends. I never realized how much my life revolved around school until quarantine, and while I do wish we had a send-off or a graduation, I’m glad I got at least a few weeks as a second-semester senior. Either way, I’m still excited for what college entails, so I’ll conclude with one more thank you to our amazing Alumni!

Reeya Dighe ’20 George Washington University

...For five incredible years, Walnut provided a safe and curious environment that fostered my love for critical thinking. I immersed myself in history, government and humanities classes and found myself engaged in critical dialogue that forced me and my peers to challenge the values we were conditioned to hold. The amazing teachers and experiences I had at Walnut drove my decision to pursue an education in International Politics with hopes of future in legal studies.

Augustus Otto Kindel ’20 The University of Pennsylvania

...As have I discovered in the last six years, overcoming any challenge requires a team backing you. With the help of the community surrounding me, I can now appreciate our motto for what had been lost in translation. “Sursum ad Summum” represents our quest as young people to confront what is unfamiliar and conquer our fears: those intellectual, those social, and those times when we are unsure of our direction.

Walnut Hills’ community gave me countless opportunities to grow as a student, communicator, and young man. The Sursum Ad Summum Scholarship represents that same commitment. The next four years of college will certainly challenge me in new ways, thus I could not be any more grateful to receive such a generous grant. Thank you for your support.

Grace Kelly Fulton ’20 Cornell University

...The students of Walnut Hills High School are extremely lucky to have such a generous alumni association full of alumni who are determined to help us succeed. I thank you all so greatly for reviewing my application and choosing to help send me to college to pursue my passion for the visual arts! Throughout high school the arts were definitely what brought me joy and comfort. From theatre to choir to drawing to piano to dance, I can never get enough. Now being rewarded for doing the things I love to do and for sharing my passions and art with others, I recognize all of the amazing things Walnut has done and continues to do for me and my path forward.

WHAT IS THE ALUMNI CONTRIBUTION?Alumni added 7 new scholarships this year (see page 11) and awarded approximately $300,000 to graduating seniors.

Despite the Class of 2020 ending their time at Walnut remotely, they earned acceptance into colleges and universities from border to border, coast to coast. The students from the Class of 2020 are pursuing the fine arts, medicine, law, engineering, business and the liberal arts. Many have multiple majors. We have heard from students—some attending classes in person, some online and some a combination of both. A few have taken a gap year. They are

resilient and they are purposeful, following in the footsteps of their predecessors. As with each graduating class, there is no doubt that our future is in good hands.

Below are excerpts from thank you letters written by our Class of 2020 scholarship recipients. After reading these, we think you will agree, WHHS grads dream big and are rarely deterred by bumps in the road. Sursum Ad Summum

Honor/Memorial GiftsSending your gift to the WHHS Alumni Foundation in honor or memory of someone is a special way to support a great school and honor a friend. Simply enclose a note with your contribution indicating the occasion and the name and address of the person you are honoring. We will send the honoree a card notifying him or her of your gift. The amount of the gift is not disclosed.

Planned GivingNaming the WHHS Alumni Foundation in your will or estate can mean significant tax benefits for you while supporting the future of quality public education. Certain types of Charitable Remainder Trusts can even provide income for you and your family in addition to providing a meaningful gift to your alma mater.
