Principal’s News The Principal & Staff of Wallumbilla State School cordially invite you to the annual Award’s Night at the Wallumbilla Memorial Hall on Thursday 21 st November, 2019 Doors open 5.30pm for a 5.45pm start. A light supper to follow the presentations, please bring a plate to share. We look forward to your company on the evening. Remembrance Day On Monday 11 November, our staff and students attended the 101 st anniversary ceremony organised by the Corona Lodge and held at the Wallumbilla Cenotaph. A minute’s silence was observed as we reflected on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women in campaigns through various locations over many years. Thank you to our students who participated and contributed to the service. Staffing Update As we reach this part of Term 4, we are busily planning for the future staffing needs for our school for 2020. We will be farewelling Ms Emily Irwin who will be accessing leave for 12 months to undertake overseas travel. We are also saddened to see Ms Sam Barnes receive a transfer to the Logan region and await confirmation of her replacement. Mrs Jess Morton will be accessing leave for 2020 but we are excited to have Mrs Meegan Dorrstein backfill as our newly graduated teacher and who has accepted placement in Prep for 2020. Mr Michael Forrester will complete his contract with us at the end of Term 4. On Thursday we will host a visit and look forward to meeting Mr Philip Gates-Crandall, who has expressed interest in permanent employment as a secondary Maths/Technology teacheri in our school. Mrs Melissa Graham will continue on leave for Term 1 and my contract as Acting Principal has been extended further to 3 April 2020. I will continue to provide updates of staffing as details “firm” up. Our intention is to maintain the current Primary class formations of a separate Prep; a combined Year 1/ 2; a combined Year 3 /4; as well as a Year 5/6 class grouping. Motivational Speaker Today, we welcomed Luke Kennedy to our school who focused on the power of positive self-talk and the benefits of building self-esteem for young people. Luke spoke to students from our school from Years 3-10 and Yuleba SS also joined us. He had an inspiring story of his life’s challenges and how he has turned these into positive opportunities. Parents may access further information from his website: https://www.lukeskennedy.com/youth-speakers-for-primary Second Break Changes For the month of November we have been and will continue trialling changes to our lunch break with students going straight out to play on the bell at 12.50pm, and returning to eat their lunches at 1.10pm. We will be seeking feedback to the benefits attached to this change to existing routines, but the intention is to allow students to have “calm down’ time out of the direct hot summer conditions whilst they enjoy a more leisurely eating time. Work Experience As we progress towards week 8, our Year 10 students will be accessing Work Experience in a variety of employment locations in our local area. I am sure that students are eagerly looking forward to accessing this wonderful extra-curricular learning opportunity. We thank all of the business who have volunteered to host our students. Awards Night The highlight of our school year will be held on Thursday 21st November at the Wallumbilla Hall. The doors will open at 5.30pm with the evening’s program commencing at 5.45pm. We will welcome our Maranoa Regional Council Mayor, Mr Tyson Golder, as our invited guest this year. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of our students in so many successful areas. We look forward to having you join with us on this evening. Leadership positions for 2020 Congratulations to all students who have indicated their intention to take on possible leadership roles in 2020. and identified their strengths and potential for this role. Likewise, aspiring House Captains took part in an informal conversation with Mr Judd and myself and we discussed how the newly evolving House Captain role might become “more than” our previous Sports Captain’s role. A special parade will be held this Thursday morning and staff and students invited to listen to their individual speeches before then voting for their preferred 2020 leaders. Parents are more than welcome to attend this special parade. The outcome and naming of the successful students will be announced on Award’s night next Thursday. We wish all students well in this important process. Team Up We are excited to once again have Greg Calleti and his PCYC team join us each Tuesday to offer the Team Up program to our Year 7 and 8 students. The program will commence on Tuesday 19 November from 9.00-11.00am and I know from past experience how well received this program is and how enthusiastically students enjoy the activities being offered. QELi Literacy Program

On Monday and Tuesday last week, Mrs Megan Dickson, Ms Penny Howland and I presented to a packed Royal on The Park “marketplace” display, highlighting our literacy journey this year. We shared the Wallumbilla Way and were proud to showcase our school culture where learning and high expectations underpin our school values and collective school behaviours. All three of us proudly wore the school uniform and “stood out” for so many “outstanding” reasons. Tallebudgera Camp Year 5/6 students are eagerly counting down to their camp where they will join with students from both Surat and Yuleba State Schools for their 5 day camp at Tallebudgera. Our students will undertake an action packed program and undoubtedly the highlight will be their day spent at Dreamworld. Anglicare Programs As previously mentioned, our Year 5/6 students have been undertaking the weekly Resourceful Adolescence Program (RAP) with Annette Cavanaugh each Wednesday. Mr Daniel Wales has been offering a fortnightly program called the RAW – Resilience and Wellbeing program to a smaller group of year 1, 2 and 3 students. Anglicare also offer community based programs such as “No More Scaredy Cats” which is an anxiety –busting workshop aimed at helping parents deal with anxiety and its affects. They also offer 123 Magic: Effective Discipline

for Children which is an easy-to-learn evidence-based parenting program. I encourage interested parents to contact Anglicare on 0439463598. Prep Transitions We look forward to welcoming our Prep students for 2020 who will join us each Wednesday afternoon from 1.30-3.00pm and who will get a “taste” of our school routines and the learning environment in the Prep area. Parents will be issued with an enrolment pack and we look forward to introducing new families into our school community. Students Absences We are required to follow up all student absences, and parents may be contacted by our automated system advising of student’s absences. In the past couple of days we have had students arriving after the commencement of the school day (and roll marking completed) and going directly to class. Can I request that students come instead directly to the office so that we can ensure that your attendance (and late arrival) is being recorded. We obviously are very keen to ensure that our efficiency and accountability for student whereabouts is being undertaken correctly. Enjoy your fortnight, Julie

Library Update As the end of year is fast approaching a school stocktake of all resources will be conducted. For this to be carried out successfully all student loans must be returned by the end of week 7. There are a few students who have some overdue loans and these outstanding loans that are not returned will be invoiced for the cost of the books. Wallumbilla State School is asking for all parents and students to be on the lookout for any School library books, text books and readers that you may have with a Wallumbilla State School barcode on them. Your co-operation in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Mrs Leahy

Remembrance Day

This year the Wallumbilla Remembrance Day Service commemorated the 101st Anniversary of Armistice Day and saw the introduction of a morning service at the Wallumbilla Cenotaph. This was held by the Corona Lodge of Wallumbilla and students made their way to the Cenotaph for the 10:45am service. Wallumbilla State School Students were invited to join in this service and the participation of Primary School Student Jake, School Captain Dylan and trumpeter Samuel, were a credit to our school. Music Fest

On Sunday, members of the Junior and Senior Bands attended Music Fest in Roma. The students performed beautifully in front of the district’s music groups.

Street Science

Last week students from our school had the opportunity to

participate in some very engaging activities through the ‘Street

Science’ program delivered at the Wallumbilla Hall. Throughout

the day 3 sessions took place, targeting different age groups.

There were many hands on activities for students to participate

in, this was a great opportunity for our students to try some ‘mind

blowing’ experiments and the excitement and enjoyment of

many students was clearly evident from the expressions on their

faces!

P&C and Tuckshop

In 2020 the Wallumbilla State School P&C will introduce a new

school shirt as our uniform. The current school shirt will be kept

in circulation for next year alongside the new addition, however

come 2021 it will become obsolete. Our new shirts are due to

arrive at the end of November for purchase for next year. We

will be selling our current limited stock at a reduced price of $15

per shirt until sold. There is also the opportunity for families to

purchase school shorts or skorts direct from the P&C supplier.

Anyone wishing to see samples or place an order can see Tash

in the office.
