Fearne Cotton, TV presenter

At school I often thought, ‘I’m wasting my time here’. ThenMr Iggulden walked into our English class. He was tall and very likeable. I thought he was fantastic, though not everyo-ne agreed. But he taught us in such an interesting way –unlike any of my previous English teachers. Rather than just reading books, he’d get us to act the stories. In one les-

son, we watched a video of Lord of the Flies. Then he gaveeveryone a character from the book and the whole classread the book aloud. I thought it was much more fun thanreading alone. Another time, he came in, said somethingthat we didn’t agree with, and we all started discussing it.Then he said, ‘Right, you’ve all got top marks in your oral examination’.

I wasn’t very good at English until Mr Iggulden became my teacher. I used to getlow grades, but as soon as I started his classes my grades improved. Sometimes we argued. He usually said I talked too much, but I think he liked my energy and

interest. I’d never read poetry before, but with Mr Iggulden, I read loads. He en-couraged us to write poems too. I still write them and one day I’d like to publishmy own collection.

I’d always wanted to work in TV, but Mr Iggulden insisted I stayed at school where I could get some qualications. He said there was only a one-in-a-millionchance that I’d achieve my dream. I never wanted to go to university and when, at15, I got my rst television job presenting a children’s programme, he said, ‘Welldone’. When the time came to leave school, I was upset about leaving his lessons but I was also looking forward to my future life.
