Macdonald Bicentennial Commission The non-profit, non-partisan Commission was established in 2010 in order to inspire a greater appreciation of the life and contributions of Sir John A. Macdonald of Kingston, Canada’s Father of Confederation. We are promoting events in the arts, education, tourism, and other sectors locally, regionally and nationally in the countdown to the Bicentennial of Macdonald’s birth and beyond. With the 2015 bicentennial of the birth of Canada’s founder fast approaching, the Commission is already planning Macdonald’s 200th birthday celebrations–a party of epic proportions held on a national scale. Together, Canadians can build toward a year-long, cross Canada celebration of the life, times and achievements of Sir John A. Macdonald. The Commission needs your support and enthusiasm. Please visit sirjohna2015.ca for more details. Who is Sir John A. Macdonald? Proud Kingstonian Sir John A. Macdonald (1815 – 1891) was Canada’s chief architect and first Prime Minister. He wrote the British North America Act in his own hand, was knighted by Queen Victoria, and built a railway to the Pacific coast. His life was dogged by tragedy and scandal. The people so loved him they wrapped the hooves of horses passing near the house where he lay dying in 1891 so as not to disturb his rest. La Commission bicentenaire de Sir John A. MacdonaldLa Commission bicentenaire de Sir John A. Macdonald, dirigée par notre commissaire, Arthur Milnes, fut créée afi n d’inspirer une plus grande appréciation de la vie et les contributions de Sir John A. Macdonald de Kingston, le Père de la Confédération du Canada, au moyen de la promotion d’événements de l’art, de l’éducation, du tourisme, et d’autres secteurs locaux, régionaux, et nationaux, jusqu’au bicentenaire de la naissance de Macdonald et même après. Comme le bicentenaire de 2015 aura lieu dans trois ans seulement, la Commission fut conçue pour planifi er la célébration du 200e anniversaire de Macdonald - une fête nationale à grand spectacle! Les Canadiens peuvent préparer ensemble une célébration pancanadienne d’une année entière de la vie, des moments, et des réalisations de Sir John A. Macdonald.

Qui est Sir John A. Macdonald?Sir John A. Macdonald (1815-1891) fut un grand architecte et le premier Premier ministre du Canada. Il écrivit la Constitution du Canada - l’Acte de l’Amérique du Nord britannique. Il fut anobli par la reine Victoria et s’est établi à Kingston. Sa vie fut pleine de tragédies et de scandales. Le peuple l’aimait tellement que, au cours de ses derniers jours, les passants enveloppèrent les sabots de leurs chevaux pour réduire le bruit et lui permettre de se reposer. Nous pouvons encore visiter ses lieux de prédilection à Kingston, ainsi que sa tombe au cimetière Cataraqui. Kingston fut la ville de Sir John A. Macdonald, et il fut un grand personnage!
