In order to better serve

the public, the City and

Library Board agreed to

let the staff open the

Library on Saturday

mornings as well as a

full day on Monday.

This increase had been

often requested by the

public.

The extensive

movement of

equipment and

materials occupied

most of the fall and

could not have been

accomplished without

the enthusiasm and in-

genuity of the

During the months

since the last report

from this office, a

number of major

efforts have been put

into different service

areas of the library with

very great success.

In the Youth Service

area sections of

shelving were emptied,

removed, replaced and

refilled to give better

visibility and expansion

capabilities. The hire of

a staff member who

would focus on Young

Adult service resulted

in the conversion of a

meeting space to a

focus area for that age

group.

The staff break room

was relocated to the

newly renovated lower

level. The foyer area of

the public entry was

emptied of several

sections of book sale

shelving to create a

more spacious and

inviting entry way.

The Gathering Room,

which had served for

some time as furniture

and shelving storage

area was emptied, the

carpet cleaned, and the

room rearranged into a

semblance of its former

elegance. The shelving

occupying that area and

used for gift and

library staff and the

support of the Library

Board. It has been a

great pleasure to work

with two such

dedicated groups in

support of a venerable

and long recognized

quality public library.

As Interim Director I

have been honored to

be a participant in this

work and pass along

the responsibility to a

new Director

beginning in

February, 2015.

As reported in a

previous edition of

WML News, work on

the downstairs section

of the Historic Walker

Memorial Library

building was

completed in mid-July.

Library and City Staff

have been hard at

work moving furniture

and other items into the

new staff work area

that is located there.

This move has allowed

us a wonderful

opportunity to clean

out the historic upstairs

section of the library.

This space had been

used for storage while

the construction was

ongoing downstairs.

Now this space has

been organized.

There is still additional

work to be done but

programs, such as the

recent Library Holiday

Open House, will be

held in this beautiful

space.

Giant Game Saturdays!

Join us every Saturday from 11-1

fun life sized, giant games. Each

week a couple of games will be

set up to play on a rotating basis.

Mayor Hilton announced in December that

Rebecca Albert has been hired as the new

Director of the Walker Memorial Library.

Currently living in New Hampshire,

Rebecca grew up in Westbrook, graduating

from Westbrook High School. She will

bring the library a wealth of knowledge and

experience from her previous library

positions in state, local, and private libraries.

We are all very excited to have Rebecca

starting in February.
