The Shaggy Sheet newsletter is sent to all supporters who donate $10 or more per year.To ensure that you continue to receive your issue, please use the enclosed envelope to make a minimum donation of $10. The animals need your help, and we don’t want your mailings to
be interrupted! Thank you for your caring support of the animals!
Did you already flip to the back cover of this issue of The Shaggy Sheet? If you haven’t already taken a look, please go ahead and do so now because – by the numbers – 2014 could be considered the biggest and best year in the history of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. And for an organization that’s been around since 1925 – nearly 90 years – that says a lot about the kind of year we had.
More importantly, it speaks volumes about the kindness and generosity of friends like you. So when I say that “we” had a spectacular year, I hope you will always remember that “we” includes YOU!
You, along with thousands of other caring individuals here in Palm Beach County… hundreds of hardworking volunteers… and more than 90 incredibly dedicated staff here at the League make it all possible.
Nearly 4,000 adoptions. More spay/neuter surgeries (10,756) than ever before. Programs and services that benefited the lives of nearly 30,000 animals right here in our local community.
And thanks to friends like you, “WE” will achieve even more in 2015. WE will save more lives and WE will continue to build a more humane community.
I hope you enjoy this latest issue of The Shaggy Sheet.
With compassion for the animals,
Rich Anderson

The HSUS reached out to their emergency placement partners, including Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. In the beginning of October, seventeen dogs were transfered to the League. Once they arrived, you could see the sense of timidness on the dogs’ faces and fear in their body language. With the assistance of our trainers and staff, the dogs quickly began to feel relaxed and started on the path of living the lives they were meant to live.
When some of the dogs arrived on October 1st, multiple TV stations came out to televise the transfer. Barbara Valbuena was watching Channel 5 News and was extremely touched by the story and fell in love with the Border Collie being taken off the transport vehicle. The next day, Barbara contacted Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League to specifically adopt the dog she saw. It was love at first sight between Barbara and Toby and today... he is doing magnificently! “He is an absolute angel!”
As with any hoarding situation, an animal can be affected in various ways...whether it’s social, behavorial and/or health issues. Thankfully, almost all of these rescued dogs were placed into loving homes. Adoptable Casey (seen below) still remains at the League and Jack is in foster care.
How can you help when situations like this happen? Please consider fostering, adopting and/or donating! PeggyAdams.org
More than 70 Dogs Rescued...In September 2014, an anonymous caller phoned The Humane Society of the United States to advise them that 30 dogs had been living at a residence in Jefferson County, Florida. When The HSUS arrived, they realized they had a hoarding situation far worse than anticipated. Instead of finding 30 dogs, they had to rescue more than 70! This rescue was unique because all of the animals were loose on the property... hiding under a trailer, in trees and bushes... all over 50 acres of property. And in the mix, surprisingly not one Pit Bull. Breeds amongst the group were Shar Pei and Spaniel/Hound mixes. Apparently, in this shelter-less area, all the dogs were bred and then brought to a local flea market to sell.
CaseyHi, I'm Casey. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a big scaredy-cat. New things and the unknown world make me really uneasy, so it takes me time to get used to change. Growing up, I never experienced anything new. My entire world was the home I lived in with many other dogs where we weren't very well cared for or socialized. All we knew was our immediate surroundings, so you can see how now that I am experiencing all kinds of new things, it can be a little scary for me. But I am making progress. Of course, I am most comfortable around other dogs since that's all I knew for the first year of my life. So, if my new home had a resident dog that could bring me some comfort and show me how great life will be there, that would make me very happy. If not, that's okay too. Are you that special someone who will take me into your home and give me a great life? PeggyAdams.org 3
Introducing the League’s NewADOPTION AMBASSADOR PROGRAMWe are thrilled to introduce the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s Adoption Ambassador Program which is foster care taken to the next level. This program, designed by the ASPCA, helps shelters increase adoptions and save more lives by recruiting and training volunteers to become “Adoptioneers”.
“Adoptioneers” select a shelter animal (or two) that is suitable for their home environment, lifestyle and schedules.
The League provides food and supplies, such as kitty litter, crates, collars, leashes, adopt-me vests for the pet to wear, pet business cards, and information packets about pet friendly places (such as the dog beach in Jupiter) where the Adoptioneer can introduce their foster pet to potential adopters.
When the Adoptioneer finds the perfect adopter, he or she works with Peggy Adams to finalize the adoption, including registering the microchip and purchasing a county rabies license. Through this program, we will reach people who might not otherwise have adopted a shelter pet, increase adoptions so we can help more animals, and improve the quality of life for the pet.
If you would like to become an Adoptioneer, please visit: PeggyAdams.org/volunteer

“Choupee entered Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League around Christmas of 2013 as a stray. His age was estimated at over 10 years. The League’s veterinarians detected a heart murmur and he didn’t look in good shape. On January 24, 2014, we took Choupee home under the Fospice Program, a new program near and dear to my heart. A Fospice Parent provides permanent fostering of those in their twilight years or those who cannot be placed through the adoption program. On January 24, 2015, Choupee will be celebrating his one year Fospice anniversary in our home. Choupee is one of the first Fospice dogs to be placed and he has flourished. Without this program his future was bleak. He is part of the pack in the Ross family and we love him to pieces and will continue to give him love, compassion and respect until the end of his days. I cannot tell you how rewarding this is and we will not hesitate to help another in need when the time comes.” ~ Su Jackson Ross and Rick Ross

On October 16th, in honor of National Community Cat Day, the Darbster Foundation funded Trap-Neuter- Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) for 89 community cats. Darbster also funded 506 TNVR surgeries throughout the year which helped reduce intake of cats into the lo-cal shelter system.
Darbster also sponsored a “Big Dog Days” spay-neuter marathon on December 2nd, 9th and 16th when a total of 49 large breed dogs were spayed/neutered. We are very grateful to the Darbster Founation for helping us provide free surgery to our communities most at-risk animals (large dogs and community cats). The Darbster Foundation collectively funded 644 spay/neuter surgeries at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in 2014.
Our long standing partnership with Schumacher Family of Dealerships continues to help animals in need of homes. In October 2014, John Ross and Fred Merrill from Subaru of America, Inc., along with Chuck Schumacher, President and Owner of Schumacher Automotive, and Frank Murano, General Manager of Schumacher Subaru, presented the keys to a brand new "Dog tested. Dog approved." 2015 Subaru Outback wrapped in Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League's "you can't miss it branding" to Rich Anderson, Executive Director and CEO of the League.
"As the local Subaru Dealer, the Schumacher Automotive Family along with Subaru of America, is proud to be committed to saving the lives of animals. We know Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League does just that and uses their community resources wisely. We are happy to continue our long term partnership," said Chuck Schumacher.
The Outback will be used to further promote Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and its important mission by transporting animals to adoption events, vaccine and micro-chip clinics and much, much more.
"We are all very grateful to the Schumacher Family of Dealerships and Subaru of America, Inc. for donating the use of this co-branded Subaru Outback," said Rich Anderson. "This vehicle will continue to help support the League's life-saving programs," said Rich Anderson.
You can make a difference, too!Volunteer!

Christmas day is a time of celebration and creating lasting memories with family. What better way to do this than to receive a new pet on Christmas day!
Our first ever “Christmas Special Delivery Adoption Event” allowed families to visit the League and pre-adopt a pet and have it delivered to their home on Christmas morning. Our staff and volunteers spent the early hours of Christmas loading up 12 kittens and 2 puppies and delivering them to their new homes.
When the idea to offer Christmas morning deliveries was first proposed, no one was sure what would happen. In fact, what happened was a steady stream of inquiries from our staff, volunteers and people in the community who had heard about the promotion, and who kindly offered to give up their Christmas morning to assist with deliveries. Following successful media coverage, our adoption team worked like elves, matching up adopters with their perfect “forever” friend. During our 8 day promotion, 136 animals found their forever homes.
Plans for our 2015 Christmas Delivery Adoption Event are already in the works!

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League was named one of the Top Ten Emergency Placement Partners by The Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS) in 2014.
We are very fortunate to be able to work with The HSUS to help animals rescued from natural disasters, puppy mills and extreme neglect cases when the need arises. As one of 300 placement partners in the United States, it is a great honor to be recognized as one of the top ten for 2014. As part of this recognition, we received a $500 donation for the Walk for the Animals and a great goody basket for the shelter, but most importantly... we were able to help animals in severe need receive the continued veterinary care, rehabilitation and ultimately placement into loving homes. We also have the comfort of knowing, should disaster ever strike in Palm Beach County, we’ll have the support of The HSUS Emergency Rescue team to help us help the animals in our community.

Becoming a Forever Friend to the animals is one of the most thoughtful and generous steps anyone can take to ensure the important work we do continues beyond our own lifetimes.
Plus, by including the League in your estate plans, your contribution and impact on the future of animal welfare can be greater than you ever dreamed possible.
For some, including the animals in your estate plan can be as simple as naming the League as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement account. Whatever your choice, we’d like to invite you to join the growing number of individuals and couples who have chosen to become Forever Friends and to establish your own personal legacy in support of the animals.
Become a Forever Friend! Create your own legacy of love for the animals!

JB Dixson, volunteer and animal advocate with Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for more than ten years. (Pictured with JB is the snuggable cat, Hampton.)
“I have been a volunteer with Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League for more than 10 years. You learn a lot about an organi-zation when you spend that much time behind the scenes. I am impressed with its dedication to the animals, the love and energy for them, and for the professionalism shown by everyone from kennel staff to veterinarians to adoption counselors. But what we sometimes take for granted is how very well managed this organi-zation is. Love is great and it’s essential. But when you are think-ing of naming an organization in your will, you want to know that it’s going to be around for a long time, doing the work you believe in supporting, and doing it well. The League is 90 years old this year - almost a century. That’s impressive! As a former international executive, I can see that with the kind of decisions its board of directors and executives are making today, it will be here for another century. I can leave a bequest and know that the funds will be managed well and do what they are supposed to do for the animals for many years to come. Confidence and trust - and a whole lot of joy are what being a “Forever Friend” of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League means to me.” ~ JB Dixson

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s43rd ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BALL
What a magical evening!
Over 300 guests attended the sold out Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s 43rd Annual Christmas Ball on December 11, 2014 at the Sailfish Club in Palm Beach. This elegant holiday event, known affectionately to long-time supporters as the “Doggie Ball”, is one of the largest fundraisers each year for the League. Pauline Pitt, a long-time, dedicated League supporter and board member, served as chairwoman and will chair the event for the third year in 2015.
This magical evening filled with holiday lights, garlands, festive Christmas trees and decorations around the club, began with a receiving line of adorable adoptable pets greeting guests with tails a-wagging as they arrived on the red carpet. Later in the evening, the dogs and cats paraded through the party allowing the guests to get a second look at these precious pets. The parade, as always, resulted in several of these furry friends finding their new pet parents and loving forever homes.
Guests also enjoyed an annual tradition of shopping at the Shaggy Shoppe boutique to find holiday gifts for their pets and pet loving friends while at the Ball, and received the latest issue of the Publicity Hound Magazine. This cherished publication features photographs of many of the finest dogs and cats in Palm Beach. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Board Member. Nellie Benoit, once again served as chair of the Publicity Hound Committee.
Over $600,000 was raised for the animals. All proceeds from the Annual Christmas Ball support the mission of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League throughout the year.
Some of the many sponsors included: Stubbs & Wooten, Scott Snyder Designs, Wells Fargo Advisors, Florida Crystals, Gunster Law, US Trust, Northern Trust Investments, and Celedinas Insurance Group.
Giving Thanks It is our distinguished honor to thank the following for their most generous gifts of $500 or more to the League from 9/1/14 through 12/31/14.
We make every effort to ensure the accuracy of these lists. When mistakes and misunderstandings occur, we act quickly to resolve the issue.
