The COUNTDOWN to Choosing Your Baby’s Doctor Begins Now!

One of the first things to do before your baby is born is find apediatrician who specializes in caring for infants and children,or a family practitioner who cares for all family members.

Now that you’ve narrowed it down to 1 or 2 doctors, call eachoffice to find out if they accept your health insurance(whether private, employer-sponsored, or Medicaid). Youalso want to know if, and when, they are accepting newpatients; and what you must do for your baby to become anew patient.

Remember to consider the location of the doctor’s office youchoose. Make sure it is easy for you to get to via car,walking, or public transportation.

You’re getting closer to making a final decision! Make sureyou feel comfortable talking to the doctor and his or herteam. Do they take time to answer your questions anddiscuss concerns? Is it easy to make appointments? Youalso want to find out how care is provided after officehours, on the weekends, and for emergencies.

Congratulations! You’ve made your choice! This is theperfect time to ask if the doctor is able to see your infant inthe hospital after delivery, and how soon after birth do theywant to see your baby in their office. You also want tocontact your health insurance plan to let them know whothe child’s doctor is and add your baby to your health planonce he or she is born.
